Right so moving on to releases for the 31st of Jan… PIAS have the new DRIVE BY TRUCKERS album “The Unraveling”.. Their 12th album… On ATO records… CD and LP available.
Here’s a tune from it
London Records via Play It Again Sam have the reissues on vinyl of the HAPPY MONDAYS albums… ”Bummed”, “Pills Thrills and Bellyaches”, “Squirrel and the G-Man” and “Yes Please”.
PIAS also have the new POLICA album as well as new albums by IIRO RANTALA “Playing Gershwin” on ACT records and an album by JOACHIM KUHN & MATEUSZ SMOCYYASKI…
Lastly from Pias is various artists “THE VIRTUES : TELEVISION SERIES SOUNDTRACK” featuring original music by Polly Jean Harvey…
Something I have only slightly touched on on these rambling pages before, but something that has swum around my head a lot over the last few years is the way the industry is treating the Compact Disc or to be fairer I suppose the way the (music) media is treating the compact disc.
Now, before I go on… This is obviously self serving but I am preaching to the converted here a bit as ye buy physical products from us… Five to one baby, one in five … That’s ye folks…
Slagging off the CD has led to comments like “no one buys CDs anymore”, or “I’m nearly embarrassed to be buying this now”, on the shop floor quite regularly… Nearly as irking as the “do ye sell iTunes vouchers” one from a few years back…
Some people honestly feel (and I find this incredible but it’s true) slightly foolish buying a CD.
WHY oh why would you feel foolish buying something you like, supporting an artist, band, label, record shop and the people that work in said businesses … Why is that something to feel foolish about?? Buying something you like!!
Because “the man” says there are better and cheaper ways to do it… F**k “the man”.. If you enjoy the product differently than the way “the man” says you should enjoy it… More power to you is what I say…
I’ll steal a great line or two from Cork band THE SHAKER HYMN which could be used for talking about “the man”
“It feels the need to beat upon its chest, forcing us to think that it knows best” .
Here’s the tune btw
My criteria with choices in life start simply with.. Are you hurting someone… If not then the choice is yours… I don’t need the “cool gangs” telling me the CD is for imbeciles… FECK right off.
Right, in our current situation, we sell more vinyl records than CDs and we may have positioned ourselves as a vinyl record shop but fundamentally we are a record shop… Full stop… CDs, Vinyl and Cassettes and we dis no one whether they want a Daniel O Donnell cassette or a Sun Ra limited press… If you have got something out of buying either of those products then A. we done a good job and B. more importantly you got something out of it.
But the media has been giving the CD a hammering for a while… And very unfairly and falsely hammering the CD also. I think I have used this analogy before… But physical music buyers like are more like the vegetarian option now in the music consumption food chain… Streaming dominates the market now… 74% of all music consumed in 2019 in the UK was streamed… 18% was our little love , hobby , pastime, physical products… And 8% now only downloaded.
So 1 in 5 of people who consume music buy a physical product… But of the 18% who buy physical (yes those fools.. that can not only hear it, but can see, touch, read and taste (if that’s your thing) and fundamentally own it!!)… Most are buying cds… 75% of the 18% physical buyers are CD buyers… Yet the media gives the impression that vinyl is kicking the shite out of CDs.. Not the case by a mile… So why does the industry not try push the CD more??… RECORD STORE DAY (RSD) is a big opportunity missed every year with CD… Some very good customers of mine don’t buy on Record Store Day because there is nothing for them to buy… Crazy business model.. Alienating a large segment of the physical buying public… Sorry now lads and I know some of ye were never called cool in yer lives… But there is an element of vinyl is for the “cool kids”… It’s like one of our banks advertisements… A load of bolloxology…
You should be into something cos you like it…. End of story… Cool me arse… Have you seen some of the lads coming into me.
Look… Paul Sinclair of SuperDeluxeEdition gives a much more eloquent synopsis of the whole thing (the article which forced my tuppenceworth upon ye)
Back to releases… Universal for the 31st of Jan have the new album by BLOSSOMS “Foolish Loving Spaces” on 2CD or Vinyl… The second CD has an acoustic album.
Uni also has a fantastic NENEH CHERRY reissue of “Raw Like Sushi”… 30 years ago when some of ye no doubt were “Cool”… There is a 3CD version and a 3LP version available.
SONY for the 31st of Jan have new albums by MEGHAN TRAINOR and LOUIS TOMLINSON, a new 7” single by JAKE BUGG and vinyl reissues by PINK “Funhouse” and ELVIS – 50 MIL ELVIS FANS CAN’T BE WRONG.
THE ORCHARD for the 31st have a new CAROLINE POLACHEK album.
Warner for the 31st of Jan have a lovely GARY MOORE live album from London Town on Provogue records… It’s on CD or deluxe CD which includes a plectrum and a sticker or limited DLP blue transparent vinyl.
Warner are also doing a vinyl press of THE CRANBERRIES album from a few years ago “Something Else”… DLP again… There is an Original Score and Songs by GRAHAM COXON to “End of the Fucking World” .
WARNER are also doing the new MARC ALMOND on BMG “Chaos and a Dancing Star” on CD, Std LP or indies only LP… Only 1k of them.
Lastly Warner have some limited run on vinyl of the MATRIX RELOADED and MATRIX REVOLUTIONS soundtracks.
Right so sat 8th Feb… Party evening!!
The main event is Mr JOHN BLEK who in my opinion is getting better and better… A beautiful sound he justs makes… New album out that day… So John will be singing, signing, swigging and hopefully smiling by the end of it.
Here’s another tune ‘Revived’ from the new album, with the boy Mick in town on the tune as well..
Anyone who can’t make the night and wants a signed copy.. Email us!!
John is well worth catching live… So hopefully you can sample the evening of the 8th… Doors at 6.30… Show starts at 7 (I plan to close the door at 7… As Jim would say by then… Is everybody in, is everybody in… The ceremony is about to begin)
We will have a second musical guest on the evening… Who is also class… Trust me… There will be a fine array of beverages. (mainly alcoholic ones but non alcoholic ones also)… Plenty of nice freebies which I will raffle off on the night… Few nice items promised.
There will be a draw for a test pressing of the new album by Mr. Blek as well as a separate draw for two tickets for Johns show in the Triskel in march… The 20% discount on one item in the shop is on the cards for ye (t and cs and all that jazz)… The gang are back together… So loads of reasons to celebrate… Let’s burn the place down… Ok bad turn of phrase maybe… See you on the 8th maybe..?
Sin e for this week folks
