MASSIVE ANNOUCEMENT DAY…NEW BRUCE…NEW U2 BOXSET…say no more…bit of reading !!

Hi Everyone,

Hope yer all well and minding yerselfs…..kids well back to school now for those of us in that position, a bit more normality ( maybe) but all the time conscious of Covid, so far from normal really…it is what it is though, keep on truckin for the winter and hopefully it will be the brightest spring of them all.

On to the tunes….i have been some man for hawking stuff over the last few months, trying to keep it going….today/tonight is no different!! …Today’s newsletter may not be as pretty or have as many links as usual, as  the Bob man is on a well deserved week off…so tis roll back to the old days or the not so good days ( re after the fire) when Raymond one figure types this baby.

Speaking of my two boys who work with me, the Shane boy had a few poems published in a poetry book “ beautiful ways to say” ….a few copies available in the shop if anyone wants to support it…proceeds are going to charity…well done Shane kid.

The tunes Raymond, the tunes….right out this friday the 11th Sept we have the next in the PJ HARVEY reissue series “ to bring you my love” is out as are the demos from those sessions on a separate record.

Uni have the brand new album by DOVES “ the universal want” on CD,LTD INDIES ONLY WHITE VINYL and a lovely box set also.

Uni also have a brand new album from MARILYN MANSON on indies white  vinyl or cd also…kevins buddy from the wonder years, is that true is it..??

We also got in from universal some lovely RICHARD AND LINDA THOMPSON vinyl reissues.

THE ORCHARD for friday have a SUZANNE VEGA  live album on vinyl , a new album also by NEAL MORSE and lastly AMORPHOUS ANDROGYNOUS ( FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON)  have the CD release ( an RSD release i think that may have got delayed) of “ cascade 2020” if anyone is interested.

Sophie Hungers new album is also with us and we got one of the signed vinyl copies btw…yay!!

PROPER for the 11th of sept have the new album by EVERYTHING EVERYTHING on a nice indies only vinyl.

On the local scene, the debut CD by DAVID O DONOVAN “ say no more” is out this friday also…there will be plenty of rotations of this album by this extremely talented Cork musician  over the weekend.

Right so …on to the 18th we go Raymond…PIAS have a new album by ED HARCOURT “ monochrome to colour” on vinyl and CD.

PROPER for the 18th sept have some GARY MOORE vinyl reissues, RAINBOW live in munich…these are on limited and numbered vinyl.

WARNER for the 18th have some nice stuff….the new NEIL YOUNG CD release “ the times” both acoustic versions of some of his classics or some cover versions.

The new RUN THE JEWELS album is out on the 18th sept also RTJ4 it is called and and its on CD, 2LP or Deluxe 4lp…..i would have listened to a bit of hip hop back in the day, but the current crop dont enthuse me to be honest…but this gang are meant to be the real deal so will give them a listen…a BTW…there’s a WU TANG “ an american saga”  documentary doing the rounds on netflix at the moment…i’m four episodes in and it has been very good…very good…mad story. If it’s your thing, i think its worth checking out…also coming highly recommend to me is the THE BAND documentary “ ONCE WERE BROTHERS” …have not seen it yet myself but it comes highly recommended…dvd and bluray available to me if anyone is interested…just out on those formats me thinks.

I’m some man for getting sidetracked…yabber, yabber, yabber.

WARNER also for the 18th of Sept have DAVID BOWIE’S “ YOUNG AMERICANS ” limited gold vinyl …in store job only, cant go on our website even…if you interested pop us a mail.

Warner also for the 18th have new albums by CHARLI XCX, BRAD MEHLDAU, FLYING COLOURS live in london, FLEETWOOD MAC deluxe reissue of classic “ then play on”…only one with green and kirwan if i’m not mistaken…and lastly new pop sensation AVA MAX releases her debut cd…billions of streams this artist has i believe.

Universal for the 18th has the reworking of the CAT STEVENS/YUSUFs masterpiece “ tea for the tillerman” volume 2 …50 years on for this record and yusef was chatting to his son a while back and wondered should he do something for the anniversary ( a bit of a milestone to be fair) and one thing led to another and a reworking of the songs became “ tea” part 2…

Universal do a reworking of THE CRANBERRIES second album “ no need to argue”…i think about Dolores every now and again, very tragic, conquered the musical world at a tender age, she was the one age to me and she was a global rock star…i struggle to manage a small shop…can’t even imagine the highs and lows of what her life was.

First ever 2 lp pressing of this huge album with b sides and a live track from mtv unplugged…19 bonus tracks on the 2cd version…release date maybe moving but for now i still have it for the 18th Sept.

Uni has the THELONIUS MONK “ PALO ALTO” LP…palo alto is a town in ( predominantly white college town in the 60s) California. Soon after the MLK assanination a college boy by the name of Danny Scher tried to bring about some racial unity in his town by organising a concert in his college. The artist he somehow managed to persuade was Mr. Monk….problem was, no one believed him…if Danny lived in Cork he would have been greeted with “ go way ou dat boy” at the mention of his gig…no one hardly bought tickets but hundreds hung around the car park the night the supposed gig was to happen…and sure enough Mr. Monk turned up….what transpired lived long in both mens memories…this record is a document of that night…that’s what records are, a document of something created, that’s why they will always exist…but that’s for another night.

UNI also for the 18th have a JOHANN JOHANNSSON 8cd/dvd boxset ( another gone to soon) and a LUDOVICO EINAUDI 2LP or 2 CD compilation called “ undiscovered” which are tracks important to him and some of his favourite tunes which he felt may have been slightly overlooked.

Sony for the 18th have the NICK MASON “ saucerful of secrets” live at the roundhouse on cd/dvd or on 2lp.

Right so the 25th sept…hold on to yer hats.. but not yer wallets…alright alright.. lame, i know lame…there is a lot going on though…the day after the 26th is RSD DROP 2…and the day before there is a host of releases either new or reissues…..where to begin…one that was to be out but pushed back a week to Oct 2 is SUFJAN STEVENS new album “ the ascension” so we will park that one till next week. PIAS have the new IDLES album “ ultra mono” …3rd album on Partisan…big band now, great live band by all accounts. 5 physical formats available…deluxe vinyl version, black and white indies only vortex vinyl, std blk vinyl, cd and cassette tape.

A CERTAIN RATIO are releasing a new album on Mute on the 25th, first album in 12 years…first pressing will be available in one of four colours with no external clue what colour it is…white is so so so rare at 300 copies, blue so so rare at 600 copies, red  so rare at 900 copies and turquoise rare at 1200…ye get my drift !

Wasn’t there a thing with one of the bowie eps from blackstar and a flashlight held the secret to the colour puzzle…do ye remember that?

The light will shine through if it’s transparent , won’t if its black…we banned all light that week…torches on phones… wouldn’t put  the lights on in the shop even..saved a few bob on the bill anyway.

PIAS also have a reissue of TWILIGHT SAD “ no one can ever know” what colour the record is…there 3rd album as a coloured 2 lp.

CARGO for the 25th sept have the new BOB MOULD indies only LP on this one.

Wea for the 25th of sept probably have one of the boxsets of the year in the PRINCE sign of the times boxsets and reissues…6 physical formats available i do believe…2 cd, 3cd, 4lp blk, 2 lp peach, 8cd/dvd and 13 lp/dvd…savage boxes, savage looking boxes …on these formats the peach 2lp and the 2 big boxsets won’t be around for long…small runs on those 3 formats…so you know where we are if you’d like one.

Wea also on the 25th have a LOU REED boxset for his album “ new york” ..3cd, dvd , 2lp and a 44 page booklet in the box…68 quid best price job.

Warner also has new albums by DEFTONES with an indies only gold vinyl version and new ROISIN MURPHY also with an indies only vinyl on the go as well….we have an exclusive print available with preorders also…so again ye know where we are…sound!!

We had a band we liked HAPPY ABANDON from Chapel Hill North Carolina play a gig in Coughlans and a good few of you folks went into it…fine album it is 2, the one they were touring that night…still copies in the shop…get to your little point Raymond…Sylvan Esso are from the same town and the lads that night done a S.E cover and it was great…an interest in SYLVAN ESSO was born that night sd looking forward to the new album.

Uni have the release of the GUNS N ROSES greatest hits on vinyl for the 25th sept also…the splattered one is gone now i think…there is a first press and maybe a few from an even smaller second press….second press people not guaranteed yet…the DLP black vinyl is available though if anyone wants one…ill try get more concrete info on the splattered ones but if your name aint down already…then its game over im afraid…sorry…even some of those waiting on 2nd press maynot get it…sorry…ill get more info.

Saturday the 29th of August is the first RSD Drop Off this year,, The man drop really to be fair… I have thought a bit about it and it’s obviously far from ideal.. As the whole world is far from ideal… I know I have not been banging on about it as much lately, but this whole Covid thing is still with us and not going anywhere in the short / medium term.. We all need to do the right things, and yet you want to trade safely.. The whole world’s problem.. Safety versus commerce… Look here’s the story.. If people are there before 8.. Then you / ye must socially distance queue.. At least 2 meters, more if you want… (I reckon we normally have 40 different households in the queue of a normal RSD, I expect less than that this year to be honest).. The car park has 100s of meters in it, and no one opens until 9 so no reason why folks can’t queue safely and at a very good distance… I shall be managing it anyway once i’m on site.. Different this year, no booze, no bands.. I will start managing folks orders once I land and teeing them up for them.. WE WILL ONLY LEAVE 4 PEOPLE into the shop at a time, until the folks outside are gone and WE WILL DO OUR BEST to get 4 people in and out in less than 10 minutes so folks outside aren’t waiting too long and that it is a safe environment for everyone… Can’t control the weather though, no we can’t.. I will try to give a more comprehensive list next week of stock we got severely cut on or that we have problems with… We can only do our best, and can’t control the allocations.. They are good enough but always a few problems… The biggest stock problems I have this year that I am aware of so fare are the releases by THE KINKS, MADNESS, SUPERGRASS and THE POGUES… Folks are going to be disappointed with these above.. Cuts of 85%, 80%, 75% of what I ordered.. Out of our hands please try understand and see the day for what it is.. It’s a shot in the arm for most record shops.. I’ll update anymore problems next week.. Got none of the BLACK KEYS one also.. So that’s the craic with that for now anyway,,

Right so, releases of note for the 4th of September include the ROLLING STONES reissue of ‘Goat’s Head Soup’ on various formats, MILES DAVIS ‘Birth Of The Cool’ on various formats, AMY WINEHOUSE’s debut record ‘Frank’ gets the Abby Road Half Speed Master treatment, there is a vinyl release of the newest WEEKND album, new TRICKYPINEAPPLE THIEF expanded, new JOSIAH JOHNSON, brand new BILL CALLAHANYO LA TENGO reissue of ‘Electr-o-pura’…

Up coming releases that caught my eye in the last few days since return include the new ROGER WATERS ‘Us and Them’ on various formats LINKIN PARK’s ‘Hybrid Theory’ 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Set4LP Set or Deluxe 2CD, and NICK MASON ain’t gonna be out done as he has ‘Saucerful Of Secrets : Live at the Roundhouse’ also on various formats.. There is also a DAVID BOWIE gold vinyl reissue of ‘Young Americans’ due out on September 18th, which is a bricks and mortar only vinyl not for websites, so if anyone interested pop a mail and we’ll stick aside a copy in the siopa, and finally there is a very limited BOB MOULD Indies Exclusive 8LP Set with a Signed Print also announced

Ok folks, sin é for this week,

The Waterboys Return, A Limited GN’R Release, and New Order’s ‘Power, Corruption & Lies’ Gets A Boxset Release

Hi everyone,

Hope all is well with you… It has been a long 12 months.. One of the longest really… This time last year I was on a week’s holiday…. Came back and had that brilliant Murder Capital launch show in the Crane Lane.. Aug 15th on a Thursday night… Some night, the sound check will live long in my memory.. Myself, Bobby, and a few sound guys in the room for it… I had goosebumps.. Savage it was… 16 nights later and the shopping centre was ablaze and all the shite with that went with that… gluaistéain . ie then for 6 weeks or more, the worst of it all then, then Togher opening. Christmas followed quickly by COVID..  That mightn’t read as if it was that bad… I look back at it and it’s like someone else lived it.. Anyway point is i’m taking a week off.. I feel the batteries are really low and need to step away.. Badly need to step away to be honest.. I love what I do.. But sometimes you got to step away… So from Sat night / Sunday coming, the 9th of August, I will be off the radar until the 17th or maybe 18th of August… Everything will be as was but Bobby and Shane will be covering it all.. Shop will be open as normal, orders being done as normal, emails and messages will be responded to but just not by Raymondo… Hope that’s cool… Well it’s the way it is… I will come back a new, slightly less grumpy man… Slightly i’d say…

I’ll be better after the ads..

KERBDOG vinyl reissues of self titled and ‘On The Turn’ also… Really limited numbers i’m afraid though, 10 or less… 10 of each not even guaranteed..  I could be all wrong about the company that is selling them but I feel that if they can sell their product in the U.K., they will sell it there first, and we get scraps over here… I could be wrong, but that’s what I feel… RSD can be the same… Joe in Wembley needs 5 more of that.. Don’t mind yer man in Dublin so… Give em to Joe… Step on enough toes Ray, you get no stock…

Bob Dylan’s Here On Vinyl Next Week, A Few More Biggies Announced, And Another Cracking Tune From Fontaines D.C.

Hi everyone,
Hope everyone is keeping well.. I forgot toe mention the RSD thing last week… I will be placing my orders over the next week so if any wish lists… Fire it over.. So it’s time for this week’s ad… Releases hitting the shop floor this Friday the 10th of July are new albums by LAURA MARLINGTHE STREETSMARGO PRICETHE JAYHAWKSGLASS ANIMALS, PRVIS, THE DMA’S, and RUFUS WAINWRIGHT… Reissues also out by REO SPEEDWAGON and THE GRATEFUL DEAD…. Not a bad week release wise, the summer is normally very quiet on the release front but this year has probably been the most bizarre year most of us have seen.. Full summer release schedule…

Shop is open now Monday to Saturday.. So just closed on Sundays.. It should be on a platforms folks… ‘Platforms’… That’s the word for it isn’t it?? ‘Platforms’…

Bob’s here on vinyl next week, on Friday the 17th of July.. Great demand for the record.. Great to report that demand also.. Indies only olive green vinyl (just 7k of these).. Ye might think i’m like the boy that cried wolf.. But passing on the information.. 7k of the indies one pressed.. 300 copies of the Prince ‘Sign O The Times’ peach vinyl coming into Ireland.. Less of the sets.. And Sufjan indies vinyl is sold out 3 months before release… Dylan’s Dylan like, end of story.. Have not immersed myself in it yet.. I’m hearing great things from the folks who say they are not normally into Dylan, but the fans / diehards are quieter about the record.. Each for our own judgement I suppose… ‘Murder Most Foul’ is class in my opinion…

Sony for the 17th aside from the Dylan vinyl release have the new DIXIE CHICKS album and DEPECHE MODE’s ‘Violator’ 12” Singles Boxset.. FIONA APPLE’s ‘Fetch The Bolt Cutters’ is moved to July 24th now..

Warner for the 17th of July have the beautiful reissue / 40th Anniversary Remastered also of JOY DIVISION’s ‘Closer’ album on Crystal Clear vinyl.. As well as that Warner are reissuing 3 classic 12” singles, ‘Transmission‘, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, and ‘Atmosphere‘. Only 1k of each of the singles…

Warner also have a new album from PRETENDERS ‘Hate For Sale’ on CD or LP as well as LIANNA LA HAVAS’ new album also.. We have a few indies only coloured vinyl due in…

PIAS have the new albums by PROTOMARTYR and JARV IS out on the 17th of July…

Cargo have the debut record by Dublin 5-piece SILVERBACKS… I like this… Also out on the 17th of July..

Uni for the 17th have the ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS soundtrackELLIE GOULDING’s new album, new SAMANTHA CRAINthe QUEEN big coloured vinyl boxa FALL OUT BOY ‘Best Of’, and MARVIN GAYE vinyl reissues…

One I forgot and meant to mention last week is the LLOYD COLE AND THE COMMOTIONS ‘Collected Recordings 1983-1989 6LP Vinyl Boxset with a book, limited to 1000 copies worldwide.. Lloyd wrote a nice few words about the release… Here tis… €190 is out best price

In 2014 Universal Music Group approached me with the idea of producing a ‘Complete Lloyd Cole and the Commotions’ box set. It was eventually released in 2015, in CD format only. I asked, I strongly suggested that a vinyl version be released but UMG were not interested. Enter Tapete Records. It’s taken a while, but it’s here.

6 LPs and a book, in a box.

All three studio albums are included, all three are re-mastered, Abbey Road studios creating the masters for UMG, and Skyline Tonfabrik fine tuning for vinyl. Many thanks to Kai Blankenberg for his patience. It took a while for me to be satisfied, but I’m very happy now. We did very little to Mainstream other than adjust level. Bob Ludwig’s original work was near perfect and still sounds great almost 30 years later. The original ½” mixdowns of Easy Pieces could not be used as the tape had disintegrated and baking, etc could not save it. We worked from the ¼” back up (made the same day as the ½” for  this very reason) and to my ears the album is significantly improved. The big news, to my ears, is Rattlesnakes. We were able to use the original ½” tapes and upon hearing a ‘flat transfer’ I was shocked at how far we had strayed from the original recordings over the years. I sent the files to the band to listen to to be sure I wasn’t imagining things. Is this as great as I think it is? They agreed. We decided to make the new version as close as possible to the original tapes. I hope you enjoy it.

The first bonus LP is all our collected b-sides, no live recordings or re-mixes.
LP 5 is demo recordings, many of which had never been heard, outside of our circle, until 2015.
The final LP is rarities, from the unreleased 1983 single Down At The Mission, the 1985 Paul Hardiman recordings, the live cover versions from our 1986 New York show, the 1986 Paris recordings with Chris Thomas, and one re-mix – our own extended version of My Bag, which we all pretty much agreed was the only decent dance mix we ever made. Pretty much everything we recorded which wasn’t a complete disaster is here.

The book contains an extensive essay by Pete Paphides, who spent way more time and wrote many more words than was originally the plan. He spoke to all the protagonists. It’s a lovely story, if a little sad, at times.

Also some ‘biggies’ announced in the last week from the EAGLES ‘Live From The Forum MMXVIII’ on 4LP2CD2CD/DVD or 2CD/BluRaylocal band DAGENHAM YANKS have a new album on vinyl out, NUN ATTAX / FIVE GO DOWN TO THE SEA? / BEETHOVEN Record with CD and Fanzine in the shop now.. It’s a great product.. MY MORNING JACKET have a new album announced on Limited Clear LPIndies Only Deluxe Coloured LP, or CD, and RICK WAKEMAN announced a new album ‘The Red Planet’...

And we lost the great ENNIO, the best in his field in my opinion.. Incredible talent and ear.. Unbelievable.. Never saw him and probably could have in recent years but didn’t move on it and it’s a regret…

Releases for the 24th of July we have the excellent MICK FLANNERY live album ‘Alive : Cork Opera House 2019’ oc CD or Double Vinyl.. Proceeds going to help Mick’s crew and band, during for them, more than most of us, an never ending quest to try to return to work.. We have the gorgeous signed test pressing up for raffle for one lucky purchaser of the aforementioned record (CD or LP), and we may even have more exciting news with Mick Flannery very soon.. Will keep ye posted…

Sorry I forgot a nice one for the 17th of July… ‘Dion and Friends’ gets it’s vinyl release.. Actually the album is called ‘Blues With Friends’, where Dion duets with some list of friends.. Bruce, Paul Simon, Bonamassa, Jeff Beck, Van The Man to name just a few of the medium hitters there…

Universal for the 24th of July have the one press only Picture Disc vinyl of iconic million / zillion selling BOB MARLEY compilation ‘Legend’... Looks sweet…

Universal for July 24th  also has the PJ HARVEY ‘Dry Demos’ on 180gm vinyl with Download… NOW 106 is out on the 24th, DIANA ROSS ‘Supertonic : The Remixes’ is out on CD and coloured vinyl, new remixes of 9 classic tracks, and lastly for the 24th Universal have a new album by ROGER O’ DONNELL (Keys player with the Cure)

PIAS for the 24th has the PJ HARVEY ‘Dry’ reissue, first time it’s out on vinyl in 20 years.. Fine debut… The original label Too Pure are putting out the reissue as well, whereas UMC have the demos release.. Don’t ask me to try to explain the ‘murky’ world of record deals.. PIAS for the 24th also have new albums by KAMAAL WILLIAMS (indies only available on vinyl) and also SHIRLEY COLLINS.. Indies only as well..

Warner for the 24th sees the release of SEASICK STEVE’s new album ‘Love and Peace’ again on indies only coloured vinyl available.. Warner also have a new albums by PRIMAL FEAR and BRANDY CLARK

Proper for the 24th of July have a new album by THE NAKED AND FAMOUS…

The Orchard for the 24th of July have the new album by COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS on Loose Records… It’s called ‘Old Flowers’ and it’s on CD or LP… The Orchard also have a new album by LORI MCKENNA…

Music on Vinyl for the 24th of July have TIN MACHINE 2 coloured vinyl and CD, NINA SIMONE ‘And Piano’, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY ‘Wiseblood’, INCUBUS ‘Make Yourself’, SLOWDIVE ‘Just For A Day’, G3 ‘Live In Tokyo’ also so a nice few due… I think a lot will be the limited coloured ones…

Right so, the 31st of July sees the new FONTAINES D.C. Record ‘A Hero’s Death‘… Deluxe Gatefold Double LP on 45RPM 180gm vinyl cut at Abbey Road with a 12” by 12” photo / lyric book.. Also available on Stormy Blue vinyl with a printed inner sleeve, standard black vinyl with a printed inner sleeve, or as a two pocket wallet CD… I love the new tune to be honest… Cracking tune altogether.. Really excited and thrilled to have a signed pressing of the record for one of ye lucky folks as well as gorgeous signed prints for some runners up.. Get on the album on some format.. Get into the competition / raffle… Probably the nicest / most sought after price we have ever had…

Sin é for this week really folks..

Prince “Sign O’ The Times” Deluxe And Remastered Formats, A Brand New Sufjan Stevens Solo Record, and Another Bumper Week

Hi Everyone,
Hope all is going okay with ye.. Lots going on in your local tape and record emporium over the last while.. Being honest we had two great week’s business but back to reality and normality this week for sure.. Weird how good it was, I suppose people showing support, pent up demand, and our searing good looks must all be factors in it.. Anyway, back to reality..

Nice few releases in the siopa for this Friday the 3rd of July, the biggest being the new album from PAUL WELLER ‘On Sunset’.. We will have a Deluxe CD and Gatefold Double LP also.. All the indies purple vinyl are spoken for i’m afraid.. Sorry..

As regards to allocations.. Certain titles or products are genuinely limited and will not last.. There are two in the distance that I will mention on this weeks newsletter… The PRINCE ‘Sign O’ The Times’ reissues (masterpiece and all that it is), particularly the 13LP/DVD version, the 8CD/DVD version and the 2LP Indies Only Peach version… We are doing best price jobs on these 3 of €300, €150 and €36… There is only one run of each of these and they won’t be around for very long.. So if you would like one, then drop us an email or buy it from the website… Just 10 of each up there as I don’t know how many I will get..

Similar story with the new SUFJAN STEVEN’s album ‘The Ascension’... Yippee yippeee yipeeee. One of my own personal favourite artists… I thought his last album ‘Carrie and Lowell’ was a work of genius.. Understated but yet so layered, thought provoking lyrics.. Still is my favourite record of the last 4 or 5 years, so i’m super excited for this release.. (I know Sufjan has done collaborations etc over the last number of years… But a new solo album.. Yes boi!!!) Again there is a independent shop only vinyl release with this and these are going to be allocated as there aren’t enough to go around… Guaranteed.. Similar to Weller, I will not have it for sale on release day, they will be gone, same as above.. Email in or buy it from the site if interested..
PAUL MCCARTNEY ‘Flaming Pie’ 3LP version is a very limited one also, as is the big boxset.. Sin é an scéal with them anyway..

Bobby and Shane (The IT Department) have done loads of work getting pre-orders up here… Loads more additions this week.. I see JOHN PRINE ‘Souvenirs’ makes it’s debut on vinyl.. Great loss to music… SPOON reissues up for pre-order, as well new records by BILL CALLAHANFLAMING LIPSDANEIL AVERYGREGORY PORTERDISCLOSURECAT STEVENS, and reissues by THELONIOUS MONKMERCURY REVCLANNADPLANXTYCHRISTY MOOREBELL X1.. Loads been added, and all up at
https://musiczone.ie/product-category/pre-order/

Right so, on with what’s out next week, the 10th of July.. Sorry getting ahead of myself, it’s not just ‘Welllllerrrr’ (ye heard that story once to many I think)… Out on the 3rd also.. THE CHARLATAN’s reissue of ’10th and 11th’SPARKS new album on Deluxe CD2LP Vinyl or 2LP Picture Disc, VANGELIS reissue, new WILLIE NELSON, new RAY LAMONTAGNE, new BURY TOMORROW album also…

So the 10th of July we have the new LAURA MARLING album ‘Song For Our Daughter’.. Lovely marbled indies only vinyl available for it.THE STREETS have a new album out also with an indies only blue vinylGLASS ANIMALS have a new album as does MARGO PRICE, again with an indies only coloured vinyl.. Her debut was really good from a few years back

Warner for the 10th of July have the DMA’s new album, GRATEFUL DEAD ‘Workingman’s Dead’ 50th Anniversary 3CD or 3LP, new album by PVRIS as well as RUFUS WAINWRIGHT’s brand new album..

Sony have the REO SPEEDWAGON ‘The Hits’ reissue on vinyl

THE ORCHARD have the JAYHAWKS’ new record ‘XOXO’ on indies only vinyl available also..

Right so, moving on to releases for the 17th of July and as with every other week the order book is open for new stuff or old stuff, and it promises to be a bumper week… The BOB DYLAN vinyl is out… It’s a  good album, have been playing the CD in the shop over recent weeks.. Watching No Direction Home also at the moment.. Speaking of music docs, The Beastie Boys one is just excellent.. Well worth a watch.. Anyway, DYLAN Vinyl, still some (not many) of the Olive coloured indies LP left.. I honestly doubt if I will have any / many on release date.. Standard black vinyl available also..

Sony also for the 17th have the new FIONA APPLE album ‘Fetch The Bolt Cutters’ on CD, standard LP or indies only coloured LP.. Ten out of ten on Pitchfork.. Best rating in nearly 10 years I believe.. I’m not a great believer in reviews… On man’s meat kind of the.. I was banging on about Sufjan earlier and some of you may get it but a lot of ye may not… It’s not a right or wrong thing, music.. I feel anyway, if you get something positive out of whatever, then it’s a good thing, we all like different things.. So reviews I take with a pinch of salt.. But 10 out of 10 is as good as it gets I suppose.. I have not heard any of the album, just making a point, an I.M.O point… I am looking forward to hearing it … Wrapped meself in knots a little there… Sony for the 17th of July also have the new album by DIXIE CHICK’s ‘Gaslighter’ out for release, and lastly but not lastly for sure Sony have the DEPECHE MODE ‘Violator’ 12” Singles Boxset.. €160 best price job on this..

Warner for the 17th of July have the 40th Anniversary Coloured Vinyl Reissue of JOY DIVISION’s ‘Closer’, as well as the 12” Singles ‘Atmosphere‘, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart‘, and ‘Trasmission‘… Little positive price error on this one.. Not from this corporation but the other corporation involved. Price is now €25 and not €28.. Anyone who bought on the site, we will issue refunds.. So I don’t have to say much about the record, do I?? And 3 quality 12”s also..

Warner also have the new PRETENDERS album on CD and Vinyl ‘Hate For Sale’, as well as the LIANNA LA HAVAS new album also..

Also out on the 17th of July is Dublin band SILVERBACK’s debut album ‘Fad’, very good again I.M.O…

PIAS for the 17th of July have the new PROTOMARTYR album that was due out a few months back, as well as the new JARV IS music and a BLACK MIDI 12” also...

PIAS for the 24th of July have P.J. HARVEY’s ‘Dry’ vinyl reissueKAMAAL WILLIAMs has a new album as does SHIRLEY COLLINS..

Universal for the 17th of July have the BOB MARLEY ‘Legend’ Picture Disc vinyl.. For retailers we are allowed just one order only on it, one bit of the cherry… Universal are also re-releasing the soundtrack to ‘Absolute Beginners’ on vinyl and CDPAUL MCCARTNEY’s ‘Flaming Pie’ reissue is released on the 31st of July but I need to put orders up this week so if interested please let us know.. Here’s the info
Flaming Pie is the tenth solo studio album by Paul McCartney, first released in 1997. Having been heavily involved in The Beatles’ Anthology project, Paul had time to reflect on the standards he and his bandmates had set during their career, and applied these to what would become his first album in four years. Made in a much more spontaneous style, with songs recorded here and there, mostly on holiday, it’s an album that luxuriates in its own sense of fun.
Featuring producers George Martin and Jeff Lynne, as well as musicians including Steve Miller, Ringo Starr and his own son, James McCartney, Flaming Pie would go on to become one of Paul’s most acclaimed albums. Sales were brisk, with the album only kept from the Number 1 slot on both sides of the Atlantic by the cultural phenomenon that was the Spice Girls’ Spice album. Released on 31st July and available as
3LP: Half-speed master of the remastered main album tracks cut over 2LPs for the first time, 1LP of the Demos and Home Recordings.
2LP: Half-speed master of the remastered main album tracks cut over 2LPs for the first time.

Universal for the 17th also have new albums by ELLIE GOULDING and SAMANTHA CRAIN… Universal are also doing a rerun of the complete QUEEN studio albums, again on coloured vinyl.. The initial ran 4/5 years ago, and the coloured vinyl did not las long, and was repressed on black vinyl, then the coloured ones are back again now.. Best price job… Sit down now… €430…

Lastly Universal have reissues by MARVIN GAYE ‘Every Great Motown Hit’ vinyl, and ‘His Classic Duets’ vinyl as well as a FALL OUT BOY greatest hits vinyl called ‘Believers Never Die’…

Their new tune is great once again.. You can pre-order both records here :

Hey Everyone,

Goodies in the siopa for release today include the reissue of the first BOB DYLAN Bootleg Series, THE WHITE STRIPES ‘Get Behind Me Satan’ on vinyl for the first time…. Well not the exact truth…. There was a few thousand done on coloured vinyl a few years back for Record Shop Day  (RSD…. Three letters you will be hearing a lot about it in the coming months)..

The-White-Stripes-Get-Behind-Me-Satan

The year is nipping along already… Onto releases for Friday the 3rd of Feb now.

UNIIVERSAL (vinyl records)

The biggest release I feel is the new ELBOW album ‘Little Fictions’ on CD and gatefold LP with codes…. The string section of the HALLE ORCHESTRA are heavily involved on this record.

These boys have been knocking around a long time now… Earned their spurs the hard way.. Plenty of knocks along the way… Tthey got a record deal with Island in the mid nineties i’d say… Recorded an album…. Island got bought up by Universal who decided to streamline….. Universal cleaned house and dropped loads of bands including Elbow…. Island still exist obviously says ye but Universal is the big bossman in the relationship now…. That must have been tough for ELBOW… Record deal….  Yeahhh… Made an album… Yeaahhh…. New owner says bye bye… No more yeahhhs for a while…. So fair play to them for keeping at it.

Lead single from the new record is quite good in my opinion…

Have a listen here…

One of the few attractions down the Marquee this summer for me are Elbow… Isn’t great overall so far again is it,  the Marquee?

Elbow - Little Fictions

I see FUTURE ISLANDS are to play Iveagh Gardens in the summer…. They might be one I could see announced maybe… Fleet foxes are maybe another…. What about the ROSES in the Marquee…. Dreaming i’d say, am i?… These are the types of bands that will have to be attracted to the city if/when the 6,000 seater event centre gets done….

It has become a bit jaded of late I feel… Same aul faces.. Not that there is anything wrong with those faces but nothing to exciting or different to enthuse…. Maybe there is a few nice surprises awaiting us…

Universal (who ended up taking the Elbow boys back via their Fiction label after three independently released albums) also have a nice limited edition of MUMFORD & SONS ‘Live in South Africa’

Chronicling the first meeting of South Africa with its favourite British band, Mumford & Sons, award-winning director Dick Carruthers gets to the very heart of what makes Mumford & Sons such a special act. Filmed live against the beautiful Pretorian outback, the band performs their most recent material and classic hits in front of an exhilarated crowd. Filmed in stunning 4K and presented in DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio and Dolby Atmos. The limited deluxe editions includes ‘Dust And Thunder’, ‘We Wrote This Yesterday’ and a CD with selections from ‘Dust And Thunder’. It is bound in a hardback red leatherette cover with dark gold foil, with a 20-page booklet including exclusive never-before-seen photos printed on uncoated paper.Total Running Time: 94 + 66 + 63 mins approx.

UNIVERSAL also have a 13 CD VANGELIS boxset, some more EMPEROR reissues and some new music by DEEP PURPLE …. New EP out next Friday just on CD entitled ‘Time For Bedlam’..

WARNER (vinyl records)

WARNER for the 3rd have some FRANCOISE HARDY LP reissues and not a whole pile more in my opinion to be honest…
Essential for the third have the new album by LOWER THAN ATLANTIS.

SONY (vinyl records)

SONY have new album by all girl electronic dark pop group MUNA , a reissue of JUDAS PRIEST ‘Turbo’ as a 30th anniversary edition remastered on 3CDs or LP, and vinyl reissues of ALAN PARSONS ‘I Robot’, and STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN’s ‘Texas Flood’.. They also have the new Ministry of Sound trance compilation.

stevierayvaughan

PIAS (vinyl records)

PIAS for the 3rd of Feb have the newest BLACK STAR RIDERS record (Scott Gorham of THIN LIZZY’s newest band) called ‘Heavy Fire’ on a few formats…

CARGO (vinyl records)

CARGO have a new CD by JULIAN COPE out next Friday also called ‘Drunken Songs’ … I think i’d like that, first part anyway…… He wrote this album, I was told, for it to be played at his funeral…. Nothing beats a bit of planning huh… Fail to prepare and all that..

We are teaming up with Universal to offer a pre-order,  promo price on the new RYAN ADAMS  album ‘Prisoner’, which is out February the 17th…. Basically if you get back to me by next Thursday at lunchtime you can get the CD  for just 10 euro or the LP 23 euro… Best prices unless you’re my mam ….. The LP seems to be about 23 sterling or 28 euro elsewhere I looked… A positive step in the right direction regarding pricing…. Without the extra discount this would be 27 euro on the shelf…. So if you want your name on one please let us know….. Sounds mighty fine to me,this track anyway… It’s another break up album i’m told from a reliable source…… OFFER IS ONLY ON PRE ORDERS…. Would you like fries or won tons with that pre order?

Ryan has a stipulation re-entering the promotion …. If you have ever upset Ryan in a Chinese restaurant in Cork and harassed him so much  that he had to eat his Chow Mein on Patricks Street  in the cold night air… Then you are omitted from entry…. Don’t want to lose the sale though so maybe your wife or someone can enter on your behalf…. Like who bothers a fella when he is about to tuck into his grub… I’d get a doggie bag as well… Surprised he came back to Cork at all…
Proper has a new ELIZA CARTHY album with the 12-piece Wayward  Band, plus a 10CD American folk box set including Dylan, Baez and Peter Paul and Mary and a new ROBERT MIZZELL album.

MUSIC ON VINYL (vinyl records)

MUSIC ON VINYL have a few nice reissues for next week including MATTHEW SWEET ‘Girlfriend’, and CAROLE KING’s ‘Living Room Tour’

Loads and loads of stuff coming at ye in next week’s newsletter…

On the local front, for any metal fans we now have Doom group Soothsayer’s two EPs in stock.. Free stickers with purchase, worth checking them out..
We also will have flyers in-store for the upcoming Cork Quarter Block Party which is happening in the city from Friday 3rd Feb – Sunday 5th Feb.. Great acts once again all weekend.. Check out any more information here

http://quarterblockparty.com/

Should have some nice instore news soon also folks…I know it’s been  quiet on that front,,,

Sin e for this week,

Im off to harass a rock star in a restaurant

Thanks for listening,

Emerging Irish Talent, Documentaries on the Corporation, and Good News for Radiohead Fans

Hi Everyone,

Hope the form is good…

The hurling is back… Thurles Sunday what’s the chances?.. Against the oldest enemy… Slim to none? Hard to call is my opinion.. Could, should be an interesting one.

Anyway… News on the RADIOHEAD white vinyl is better.. I am receiving 24 copies of it now… Better than 10… So still 6 copies available if anyone else is interested.. No luck at all on the single.. Got zero, zip, nada, nought… Crazy Ebay pricing now your only option (my advice, forget about it and don’t support the slippery quick buck merchants)…

radioheadwhite

Anyway, June 17th for the Radiohead… I have not listened at all to it yet..

Right so, releases in the shop today for your browsing pleasure include RICHARD ASHCROFT, BOB DYLAN, MANIC STREET PREACHERS, THE ASSOCIATES, ADAM + THE ANTS, CHRISTY MOORE (CD), DAVID BOWIE, ERIC CLAPTON (CD), and MUDCRUTCH (CD) amongst others.

Or for those who prefer the visual medium of a video, we have upgraded our camera in the Music Zone Towers, but unfortunately our camera man is still a bit on the shakey side! Be sure to hit the subscribe button on our YouTube channel in order to keep up with these weekly video new release updates! One customer got a fine chuckle from me during the week when he asked for me not to send him any more Vinyl Pornography.. Sorry, here’s more porn.. Be sure to subscribe for vinyl porn!

Moving on from that so… To releases for next Friday the 27th of May.. No major releases but still quite a few interesting ones.

UNIVERSAL

Universal have the new CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN album on CD and Gatefold Vinyl via Island records..

catfish

Thirty four years on and the return of MARTIN FRY with the follow up to ‘The Lexicon of Love’.. Part II is out next Friday.. CD only for now.. LP will follow in coming weeks.

Universal also have a nice WILKO JOHNSON selected blues album CD… 40 tracks, 8 quid.. Entitled ‘The First Time I Met The Blues’.

There is a 9LP STEVE HACKETT vinyl boxset of his first 6LPs, plus previously unreleased ‘Live at the New Theatre, Oxford 1979’, and a double live LP ‘Live At Reading 1981’

Still more from Universal for next week, the third instalment of the MARVIN GAYE boxsets, this is an 8LP set again, covering records from 71-81, including the classics like ‘Let’s Get It On’, and ‘What’s Going On’, and the alimony acquired favourite ‘Here, My Dear’.

marvin

Universal have a reissue of TALK TALK’s ‘Laughing Stock’ and the NIRVANA live compilation ‘From The Muddy Banks of the Wishkah’ on double LP, and lastly there is a new ALAN PARSON’s triple live album.

SONY

Sony for the 27th of May have LACUNA COIL’s new album ‘Delirium’, limited edition CD and limited edition LP. Some nice Sony Legacy vinyl reissues also out, including titles from the brilliant JEFF LYNNE’S E.L.O, and the great bard himself MR. LEONARD COHEN… E.L.O titles include ‘A New World Record’, ‘El Dorado’, and ‘Out of the Blue’, and the Cohen titles are ‘Songs of Leonard Cohen’, ‘Songs From A Room’, and ‘Songs of Love and Hate’. Decent value on the Cohen’s at 18Eur each!

leocohen

A good friend and customer of the shop, Tim Mc 2, put together a really fabulous video documentary of the shop on Record Shop Day… A brilliant piece in my opinion, really captured the day… Thanks Tim!

Tim and myself go back a while but inadvertently Tim is the reason MUSIC ZONE is here.. We worked together in McDonalds in 1991.. Tall ships race time.. Busy for the burgers, burnt fingers, work there, work anywhere… Tim got into GOLDEN DISCS just around the corner on Patrick Street. Tim always loved his tunes and I had him pestered if there was news on a job there, not to forget me… Low and behold, one day in trots Tim.. ‘I’m moving on Ray, will I put in a word for ya?’… True to his word.. Bod a bing, here I am… 23 years later, boring guys to death with my rambling notes.

If you can spare 40 minutes over the weekend have a watch.. We think it’s worth it.. Thanks to Ian, Frank, Stevie, Martin and Aaron for doing the auld interviews.. There are some lovely moments in the video.. I lightly chuckle when I see Arthur making his decision on his free CD from the box of freebies… The reaction is great I think (over Stevie’s shoulder during his interview!). Great document of a great day.. Thanks a million Tim.. And the rest of ye… Handsome devils for showing up… It was a Boyzone reunion audition in the man cave that day..

PROPER

Proper for the 27th of May have new albums by BRONAGH GALLAGHER. The King of swamp rock, TONY JOE WHITE, has a new one via YepRoz.. MARK KOZELEK ‘Sings Favourites’, PINK FLOYD ‘London 66/67’, PET SHOP BOYS new 12 inch single on white vinyl.. Nice few bits.

Lastly from Proper is the second album by CIARAN LAVERY… I am really looking forward to hearing this one… Firstly he is Irish which is always a great starting point for me.. So much Irish music is as good, if not better, than any of the stuff we are being force fed, but it is so hard to get seen.. Radio in this country don’t help.. It’s all about the dollar.. Why can’t this song be played on 96FM?… Radio Friendly, surely?… You heard the quality of the local guys here from the video.. Top quality each and everyone of them, and deserve a shot at it..

This dude has a lot of talent, and deserves to be heard… And he starts from the right place… All for one and one for all, let’s hold hands and build a wall..

ciaranlav

neilhuman

Warner also have the new MONKEES album.. First in 20 years.. Also out is a BURT BACHARACH ‘Best Of’, and the new album by BAND OF SKULLS…
