Boy One – Calm Before The Storm (CD)

The recording of the album ‘CALM BEFORE THE STORM’ was very much a stop start affair interspersed by lockdowns, restricted travel and social distancing. Strange times indeed. However most of the songs were written before Covid reared its ugly head and so a variety of topics are tackled;

White collar crime (NO ONE KNOWS NOTHIN’).
‘Pardon me while I stifle a yawn
but the great and the good keep getting it wrong…’

Regrets late in life (IS THIS ALL THERE IS?) has a latin flavour and harmony trumpets courtesy of Frank Duff.
‘she married him for love
he showed a little kindness
the years have gone by
now she cries in the darkness..’

Loneliness (CANT LOVE NO ONE BUT YOU) sung by guest vocalist Niamh Payne.
Domestic violence (ONE HIT WONDER).
‘He’s a one hit wonder
screaming blue murder
his heart is colder
than a dead soldier…’

Included also is last years single ‘BROKEN SKIES’ which has been remixed for the album. With the recent code red, UN report on global warning the song couldn’t be more resonant.
‘We’re running out of time
there’s nowhere to hide
the sun that gave us life
will burn through these broken skies..’
One song written during the pandemic was ’THE WORST ISYET TO COME’. Sung as a duet with Niamh. And though the song is upbeat the sentiments are pessimistic.

‘there’s something in the air
something not quite right out there
things will never be the same again
it’s no use tryin’ to pretend….’

On the whole though the album is an optimistic affair sprinkled with its share of love songs such as the opening track (TOO
BLIND TO SEE). And there’s the glam rock, summer love song (FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND). There’s also the piano ballad (RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD) and the bittersweet (A NEW START). All in all a rich tapestry of pop gems. Boy One. Or better still BuyTwo..
