August 7th: Exclusive FONTAINES D.C. In-store Listening Party, DEPECHE MODE Box Set, brand new SMASHING PUMPKINS, JON HOPKINS, plus a Super Deluxe ALAN PARSONS

How d party people

Hope all is well.

Lovely little event announcement today for ye folks…some of ye on the twitter machine and instaspam may have seen this already ( i have become completely detached from said machines, sometimes i might touch in on work stuff but a load of baloney in general terms i feel…a load of cockawalla)

But a lovely event is coming up in the siopa tomorrow week Thursday the 15th of August @ 6pm when we will have a listening party for the new Fontaines record “ romance”.

So fans of FDC can get a chance to hear the album in full in the siopa 8 days before release….not only that, i’m told there will be plenty of spots Fontaines related to be raffled/given out on the evening and last but certainly not least, there is a really limited ( only available to the listening parties around the world, just 2 listening parties in Ireland) white label pressing of the album which will be raffled out on the night to folks who are in our house at the time…there is a chance we may get more than one copy of this but definitely one copy anyway will be raffled.

We have been on about this band since before they were signed and it’s lovely to be thought of for such an event.

We have some folks traveling from Galway, Limerick and Kerry for the event ( all thanks to the social media  I was on about…hah what…it has pluses i guess ( gruntingly)).

So pop us a mail if you want to attend … .or there are links on the site also so can do it through there ….room for 70/80 folks reasonably comfy anyway ( id expect about 50 tbh)

Should be a lovely event and you never know what you might leave with!

The band probably have about 20 great songs at this stage but this one is right up there with them….really looking forward to the record

Right so releases for this Friday the 9th Aug include…

Then releases for the 16th Aug include…

So its the 23rd of August we’ll be putting orders in for this next few weeks and we hope to have

Going to hand ye over to Shane now as he takes ye down the road with announcements…

Hey everyone! Sound, Ray. A good bit today again, so won’t ramble on.

First release that’s well worth a mention is a brand new album by SMASHING PUMPKINS – Aghori Mhori Mei. Written/recorded soon after the release of their last massive triple album a year or so ago. It will be available to us on CD, standard vinyl or Indies Vinyl with Poster.
And it’s out on November 22nd. Here’s a new tune from it:
EDIN

The next in the 12 inch singles box sets from DEPECHE MODE is coming soon. ‘Spirit: The 12″ Singles Box Set.
Here’s a bit more info about that:

12” x 7 – Limited Numbered Collector’s Edition vinyl set housed in a deluxe slipcase including seven 12″ 180g vinyl discs, riveting artwork recontextualizing original album covers, a replica poster and download card.

Spirit | The 12″ Singles, a collector’s edition deluxe box set, contains seven 12″ vinyl discs including custom replicas of the original three double 12″ singles from Spirit (Depeche Mode‘s 14th studio album): Where’s the Revolution (originally released 3 February 2017, in advance of the album), Going Backwards (released 23 June 2017), and Cover Me (released 6 October 2017).

As a bonus for Depeche Mode fans, Spirit | The 12″ Singles premieres a special seventh disc: the first-ever 12″ vinyl pressing of the band’s legendary Highline Sessions, recorded live in New York City on 3 August 2016. The most complete recording of Depeche Mode’s Highline Sessions ever released in any format, this five-song 12″ vinyl single includes DM’s galvanizing cover of David Bowie‘s “Heroes” (celebrating the anthem’s 2017 40th anniversary) and two previously unreleased performances of songs from SpiritSo Much Love and Poison Heart. ”

The set will be released on September 20th.

And at the start of September there’s a cool looking numbered/coloured reissue of MILES DAVIS – The Man With The Horn with Marcus Miller involved coming out via Music on Vinyl.

Oh and for any metal fans, NILE are releasing a brand new album on August 23rd. Called ‘The Underworld Awaits Us All’. We didn’t put it up on the site as the vinyl is expensive at around 50 quid but if anyone is interested pop us a mail.

Here’s a list of what else will be coming out over the next few months:

And here’s young Adam’s video exposé before I go:

Back to you, Ray, cheers!

Right so hope to have more really exciting news next week but sin e for this week folks

Thanks for listening as always

July 31st: Shady’s Back, FONTAINES Output, New PIXIES, NEIL YOUNG Box Set, U2 Neon Vinyl, new GEMMA HAYES, JOHN SPILLANE and a load more

Guess who’s back,  shadys back, back again

Well folks, i is back at the ranch (since last Thursday really) was allergic then,  but sher a few hours and you’re back on the horse … .lovely break though, 9 days away from the ranch and not one emaile answered, hardly any read to be honest…great to power down.

And we aint hurling anymore either, not to be,  thats sport, a lot down here may disagree but better team on the day won it i felt, bar that 13/14 min  spell in the first half, we were never in any control of the game, playing catch up, huge resilience to do so in fact,  so not to be, congrats to the banner. I thought when we beat Limerick down the Pairc that we would win the all ireland but again not to be.

The hurlers gave us great entertainment and heart stopping moments all this short summer , which will live long in the memory.

Right so releases for this Friday the 2nd August include

And then for the 9th of August we have

So the main point of attack for this week is for August 16th…and we will have or endeavor to have albums by…

I personally think this could be the record that brings the lads to a higher level again.

Their output has been stunning in the last 5 years….remember it was only april 2019 when they released their debut record “ dogrel” …the 19th of April if memory serves me, the eve of RSD that year…now we are on the verge of album number 4 with Grian after popping out a beautiful solo record as well in that time….all very impressive records.

Here is a tune from the new album

Fontaines D.C. – Favourite (Official Video)

Mark Lanegan ‘Bubblegum XX’ deluxe reissues 23rd August ( super artist if new to you well worth checking out )
Heres a song from the record…great record, maybe his best…one of my favourite rock vocalists

Strange Religion

Going to hand ye over to Shane now as he takes ye folks down the road etc…

Sound, Ray! Good to have you back, and glad you had a good break. The punter’s wallets mightn’t be too happy though!
Agree about the Hurling final. Clare were very good after our early burst.
Delighted to see Daniel Wiffen pick up Ireland’s first ever Men’s swimming gold yesterday! What a moment. And he set a new Olympic record too. Proud moment.
I’ve been watching the Olympic events on Youtube.

Anyway, there’s a load to get through. I’m going to list them in arguable order of importance.
But first, we have to properly mention the brand new album by our own JOHN SPILLANE. It’s called ‘FíorUisce: The Legend of the Lough’ and sounds unreal. A bilingual, concept, folk-opera double CD album!
There will be a launch event at the Lough on Sunday 15th of September at 4pm!

Here’s níos mó info:
“Dive into a world of myth, music, and magic. Fíoruisce – The Legend of the Lough, a bilingual folk-opera set at The Lough in Cork city, released on September 13th, 2024. The story is a surreal tale culminating in a drowned kingdom, which as lore tells us, becomes The Lough in Cork city as we know it today. They say you can see the tops of the underworld towers on a clear day and hear the music of their big party on Midsummer’s night.
Enter this world through this hugely ambitious concept album which features the voices of some of the most talented folk and sean nós singers of the age including Ríoghnach Connolly, Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin, Niamh Farrell, Nell Ní Chróinín, John Spillane himself of course, and more. Produced by John Spillane and Brian Casey at Wavefield Recordings, Clonakilty in 2023 and 2024.

July 24th: Huge RORY GALLAGHER BBC Box Set, WELLER B-Sides Vinyl, new ORLA GARTLAND, Big Anniversary Coloured LP reissues, and Return of the Jedi (Ray)

Hi all! So the two of us are on the newsletter again this week. Starting to miss the bossman now (Don’t tell him I said that!).

Releases for the 26th there will be

And then for the 2nd of August there will be:

So main week for this week is the 9th of August and we’ll start with Warner:

Next up is Proper:

Cargo:

Integral:

Universal for the 9th:

Wellers probs the big one here. Great collection of B-Sides finally released on vinyl. Be picking this up myself me thinks:)

Short and sweet today really, some nice bits in there though. Anyways, hand ye to Shane for the down the roads!.

Sound, Adam, bud.
Hi everyone, hope ye’re all well. Only a few more days to mark off on the calendar now for Ray to get back. Meanwhile, Ray is setting all the clocks slow on the yacht.

Here’s a classic Simpson’s clip on abstinence that came to mind:
https://youtu.be/ioDjTCDeMbM?si=Xo36YqxJicZMyTha

Tough on Cork in the Hurling. So close. Some poor decisions by the ref in the last 10 minutes. But after the first 20 minutes, Clare were excellent.

Listening to David Murphy’s ‘Cuimhne Ghlinn’ record at the moment. So relaxing and cinematic. Ennio Morricone vibes. Lovely listen.

There’s a massive one to tell ye about first coming down the road. A huge RORY GALLAGHER box set, ‘The BBC Collection’. The super deluxe version of it has 18 CDs and 2 Blu Rays. Lots of unreleased stuff on it.
Here’s more info:

The BBC Collection’ is an all-encompassing collection of the many recorded performances of Rory Gallagher at the BBC. Featuring eighteen CDs worth of radio concerts and sessions from 1971 to 1986, roughly 75% of this material has not been officially released before. Also included is two Blu Ray discs of BBC TV concerts and studio performances from 1973 to 1984, all of which has not been officially released previously.

Amassed from the BBC archives and Rory Gallagher’s own transcription discs and off-air cassette recordings, the boxset spans 16 years of his career (1971-1986), taking in highlights such as the 1977 dual television and radio broadcast Sight & Sound concert, Rory’s headlining set at the Reading Festival in 1980 to the emotional ‘At Midnight’ concert live from the Ulster Hall in Belfast, 1984.”

The full track-list is there if you click into the link above, or on the picture below. There’s also a 3 LP Vinyl version and a 2 CD set. That’s coming out on October 11th.
Looks a lovely set.

Then to another legend, there’s going to be a series of remastered, coloured vinyl reissues of JONI MITCHELL albums: HejiraMingusDon Juan’s Reckless Daughter and Shadows & Light. These will also be available on black vinyl, and released on September 6th.

And a nice new Irish release to mention, the brand new, second album from Dublin native, ORLA GARTLAND – Everybody Needs a Hero, which will be out on CD, red vinyl and indies splatter blue/white vinyl, 4/10/24. I like her sound.
Here’s a new (released earlier today) track from it: https://youtu.be/-MEkPfGSatE?si=sZmdGDyqZW7wdkO_

And here’s a list of other releases coming soon:

We didn’t get an aul video done this week as all hands on deck.
If something interests that we haven’t a link done for just drop us an email and we will put in the order book.

Sound. Thanks for putting up with us!

Ray, Shane, Young Adam and Mia.

July 17th: VAN MORRISON LIve, new BLUES PILLS, Rory Strat Rant, FACES Box Set, new NALA SINEPHRO and more from the Despicable Two.

Hi all, so its Shane and I for the next two weeks. The bossman is off on a well well well deserved break. I know he usually says a bits (rants) here so I’m gonna do the same… We were talking during the week about the sale of Rorys Strat in the shop. I got a shock to be honest when I saw it pop up. There’s alot to it but I think It was just handled wrong. It always had to be passed on but we would’ve hoped to a good home. Not thrown to the wolves at some big wig auction. I can’t help but feel that Donal was just plain lazy. The statement put out said the money will be put towards “further good for Rory’s name and Legacy as well as assisting good causes, that my brother would have supported” He’s made it seem like the money doesnt matter and finding a good home is priority but I feel its the other way around. Hes sent it to auction to squeeze everything out of it. “Whatll you pay for it?” instead of “How will you look after it?”.

The first Fender to hit Irish soil and when you look back to what was going on here at the time (not alot), the noise Rory put thru it changed everything. America had the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the UK had Cream (Amongst many others). We had Taste. It feels freakish to think about. A band like that coming from Cork when they did, but they did and they kicked open the door for everything after them. All on the Strat… Its hard to know what the right thing to do is but it’s definitely not this. I think maybe it needs to be on Irish soil and looked after properly. Guitars are livings things and to leave it fall into disrepair would be worse than anything I’m cribbing about. So if not museums then where??? Who knows?! Not in some rich fucks cupboard anyway. I dunno. Shouting at the wind here a bit but alot of people feel the same. Just sad to see how its gone… Im including a link to a gofundme Sheena from Crowlys is running to try get it back to Cork. https://www.gofundme.com/f/bring-rorys-strat-home

Here are what’s coming out this Friday the 19th of July

And then for the 26th we will have

Main week so is August 2nd…

We start with Warner:)

Proper for the 2nd:

Orchard for 2nd:

Integral for 2nd:

Cargo for the 2nd:

Universal for the 2nd and 9th of August

Over to Shane now for the down the roads! See ye next week:)

Sound, Adam. Hello all. Agree about Rory’s guitar. Be a shame if it goes into a vault somewhere.

So the Bossman is on a well deserved break. Gina and the kids are on the top deck sunning themselves and Ray has a cuban cigar going at the helm as I type.
They’re doing a tour of the Med I think, but Ray is stopping in Monaco for a day to do a ‘rant management’ course. I think Universal sponsored it so he said he might as well.
We tried to convince him not to cos we all enjoy his rants but he said it would be better for the blood pressure. We’ll see if it has any effect I suppose. He could come back like a Zen Buddhist now.

Myself and Young Adam will bumble through things anyway for the next week or so.

First down the road to mention is a cool 9 disc Box Set, THE FACES – The Complete BBC Concert and Session Recordings ’70-73. Out September 6th.
Here’s some info on it:
“This new collection – much of it previously unreleased – has been remastered with the full
participation of band members Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood and Kenney Jones. After teasing their legendary BBC recordings with two Record Store Day releases, Faces At The BBC — Complete BBC Concert & Session Recordings 1970-1973 will be available as an 8CD/Blu-ray set.

The Blu-ray includes newly restored footage of the Faces’ April 1972 appearance on Sounds for Saturday. The concert finds the “Borstal Boys” in peak form, radiating their swaggering, joyous spirit of rock ’n’ roll that continues to inspire generations. The hardback set includes a 48-page booklet with new commentary from surviving band members and archival quotes from Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan, and legendary BBC broadcaster John Peel. Lavishly illustrated with many previously unseen photos, the booklet details every Faces BBC session, concert, and broadcast. BBC broadcaster Gary Crowley wrote the detailed liner notes, which include a new interview with Jeff
Griffin, who produced all of the Faces’ BBC concert appearances.”

On August 23rd there’s going to be a 20th Anniversary 2 LP vinyl pressing of THE PRODIGY – Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned. Hasn’t been on vinyl in yonks I don’t think.
Great band. Saw them at Oxygen about 15 years ago. Keith was still there. Unreal.
It’s crazy how good the lineups at festivals were like 15-20 years ago.
Less so now, in my opinion, but I am getting old.

EMINEM’s brand new album ‘The Death of Slim Shady’ is coming out on CD on September 13th. And two coloured vinyl variants will be arriving on October 25th.
Like the single with the Steve Miller Band sample: Eminem – Houdini [Official Music Video]

And a new album is coming from NALA SINEPHRO – Endlessness via WARP. Her second. First one was great. Jazzy, electronic vibes. Some great featured jazz musicians on it and some orchestra I think.
That’ll be out on CD or Vinyl on September 6th.

And here’s what else is coming down the line:

Here’s Adam’s instagram vid as well for ye: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C9XpVE8MrmY/?igsh=d2poeDV4a2VvdzZs

Sin e I’d say.
Fingers crossed for the final now on Sunday.

Talk to ye next week.
Ray, Shane, Young Adam and Mia.

July 10th: Massive DYLAN Live CD Box Set, Ray’s Hols, New LAURA MARLING, MARK LANEGAN Anniversary Editions, Tír na nÓg reissues, and the Rebels are still hurling…

Hi folks

Well well well… the rebels are still hurling, the bookies can get it wrong sometimes!!

Bounced out of Croke Park sunday, twas magic from a Cork point of view, they brought the fire and brimstone that was required to defeat a serious serious team, twas magic, savage atmosphere, when Collins made the save from Hegarty and Joyce got the hurley  in to block Gillane , on his knees got the sliotar in hand and got it to one of the downeys who got it to Deccie Dalton 80 yards from the limerick goal , who pinged it over the bar, the roar was bigger than a goal…magic. Anyways , delighted as you can tell!

Good news. Going to hand ye over to Shane now as he takes ye down the road as usual…

Cheers, Ray! Hello everyone!
Jeez, the match was brilliant wasn’t it? I don’t watch much hurling but twas a brilliant match. Cork were exceptional and Limerick missed a few. I was hanging onto the edge of the couch in the last five or six minutes.
Must be even better watching live in a stadium. Hope they can get the win in the final.
I remember the Cork hurlers visiting my Primary School. And that was one of the last times they won it.
The Euros tonight as well. Come on the Netherlands!!

First one to mention from me is a MASSIVE Bob Dylan & The Band Live CD Box Set, ‘1974 Live Recordings’. 27 CDs in it and just over 100 euro. Nice.
Here’s a bit about it:

“Bob Dylan’s 1974 Tour marked his first time touring live in eight years and reunited him with The Band – who had become widely renowned in their own right since backing the artist nearly a decade earlier. Booked into arenas for the first time ever, Bob Dylan and The Band performed 30 dates in 42 days (often playing two sets per day) before an average audience of 18,500 – helping set a new standard for what rock concerts could look and sound like. And in front of those crowds, they brought an energy that Rolling Stone’s Ben Fong-Torres described as “searing and soaring, unified and precise…excellent in itself.” Music critic Robert Christgau compared the sound to Bob Dylan “running over his old songs like a truck.”

Tour ‘74 kicked off January 3, 1974, at Chicago Stadium – the largest indoor arena in the world at the time it was built – with a tense and combative rip through ultimate deep-cut “Hero Blues,” an acoustic-gone-electric outtake from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan sessions, that he had scarcely performed before – or since. Additional rarities – like a wildly-reinvented “Ballad Of Hollis Brown,” “Song to Woody” (not performed since 1962) and Planet Waves outtake “Nobody ‘Cept You” – would be well received in the tour’s first nights. “We were booed off of every stage in Europe,” The Band’s Robbie Robertson recalled to Newsweek of their previous run together. “What happened tonight in Chicago is so reassuring for us.”

LAURA MARLING has a brand new album coming. Sounds cool. Written after the birth of her daughter and is stripped back/mainly acoustic. ‘Patterns in Repeat’ it’s called. CD, black vinyl or limited cream vinyl, and it will be out at the end of October.
Here’s a lovely track from it: Patterns

There’s a nice 20th Anniversary Edition of Mark Lanegan’s classic album ‘Bubblegum’ coming out on 3 CD, black vinyl, Limited Red Vinyl and a limited 4 LP box set with a Hardcover Book.
Out August 23rd. Lots of extras included.

And FLOATING POINTS has a new album coming on September 13th. ‘Cascade’. His last release with Pharoah Sanders was class. On CD, LP and indies coloured LP.
Here’s new track ‘KEY 103’

Here’s the rest. We were short a Mia today so we didn’t get eveything up on the site. Will try get the leftover up next week.:

Nice out there today. Be sweet if we could get like a solid week of it.
Here’s Adam and d’video before I go:

Sound, Ray. Cheers.

Thanks a mil Shane!!

Right folks so I’m missing from Monday the 15th until Friday the 26th of July ( working from home on the 15th) but Shane and Adam have the reins so they will look after ye … .021 4967119 or shop@musiczone.ie the best 2 ways to contact us….well them really!!

Will see some of you this week yet I say…right ( ye know i love ye right, but it does feel good knowing i don’t have to write a newsletter for a couple of weeks!! I will have some mojo back when i return id say)

I kind of floated the words into the air the other night at home wondering about flights from Spain to Dublin on the morning of the 21st ( no ticket nor smell of one mind you) …no words floated back though….a bit of a look though, looks can say a thousand words, god loves a tryer my mam used say, hates a chancer though…not sure where i fell there.

Anyway, Slan

Sin e for this week folks

The boys will entertain and cajole ye next week…open the newsletter if you still want to get it….but if you are reading this so pointless exercise then

Right Slan now

Ray, Shane, young Adam and Mia

July 3rd: RORY GALLAGHER Live LP, PUMPKINS First time pressing, Lots of JAZZ, wise words from BILL CALLAHAN, new PERRY BLAKE, and lets stop the bots!

Hi folks

Hope all is well…welcome to the summer (ha)….summertime also and the releases get iffy.

Going to Dublin Sunday to shout on the blood and bandage…can they win?

Bookies have Cork at 3 to 1 while Limerick are 3 to 1 on….bookies are seldom wrong

But absolutely they can win, but mentally they  have to match Limerick, Croke park is their  hunting ground, hardly lost a match there ….8 big wins in a row up there for the Limerick juggernaut….Cork, bar the win against Kilkenny in 2021, have hardly won a match there in the last 10/15 years….it was once our playground!! So Cork have to want it more than Limerick , win the vital match ups, O’Donoughue/Gillane, Downey /Flanagan, Dalton/Hayes and run like Forrest Gump for the whole afternoon…those things will  give Cork a chance, but must be 100% mentally ready for it!

Anyways, I do like the auld hurling folks but onto the music.

Releases in the shop for this Friday the 5th July…

( on a personal note, really can’t wait to spend  sometime with the new A LAZARUS SOUL record )

Heres a taste…

Then for the 12th july we will have…

So main week we are flogging to ye this week is for the 19th of July and we will have albums by:

PERRY BLAKE ‘DEATH OF A SOCIETY GIRL’ – FEAT PAUL MCGANN

Great range of artists on this tribute album !

PSYCHO KILLER – Miley Cyrus

And another cracking tribute album …

Going to hand ye over to Shane now as he takes ye down the road as usual….few bits i think.

Hey Ray, cheers. Hello everyone, hope ye’re well. I have recovered. Had the covid last week in the end. Wrecked tired for a couple days.
Exciting about the Hurling alright, Ray. I’m going to try watch it. Tough match.

Some blue skies outside today for once, how bad.

So what’s coming out down the road?
First up is a nice one, a band I like a lot, SMASHING PUMPKINS – Rotten Apples: Greatest Hits is getting the double LP vinyl treatment, and it’s actually the first time it’s officially out on vinyl. All the big hitter tracks are on it.
They played Dublin the other week. Weezer were supporting too. Would have liked to have gone but didn’t make it.
Be class if that event center got done here in Cork before we all die.
Anyway, the compilation is coming out on August 9th.

There’s a 40th Anniversary Limited Deluxe edition of ULTRAVOX – Lament coming soonish too. The start of September.
It’ll be across three different formats: 7 CD/1 DVD Box set, Clear vinyl 5 LP set or a 2 LP version with an etching on one side.

Indie songwriter CASS McCOMBS is reissuing his first 3 releases via 4 AD also on September 6th. His debut EP – Not that Way, debut album, A, and dara album, PREfection.
Here’s a track from A in case you haven’t heard before or want to revisit: When the Bible Was Wrote

And here’s a list of what else is coming. Some nice Jazz reissues. I know some shop regulars are collecting these:

That’s the lot for this week, I think.
Here’s Adam’s latest video from the shop, fresh back from Patti Smith:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/C8zlNvOsuCw/?igsh=MTNhYXRzNDUxcGtsYw==

Back to you Ray. Good words from Bill Callahan. Ticketmaster are fairly scummy.
Noelle missed out on the Taylor Swift gig but it seemed like loads of radio stations and businesses had tickets. Also half of the tickets repackaged as VIP Special tickets but all they were were normal tickets with a box of a few photo cards and a poster and a pen added for 400 euro.
Anyway, she went to Green Day last Thursday and she ended up delighted with that.
Their latest album is excellent by the way.

Cheers, Ray, enjoy the match, slán.

Thanks a mil Shane!

Right folks, last thing before i leg it….it is regards the newsletter….our problem from 12 or so months ago has raised its head again….begs a few questions in this modern world….we are getting over a 1000 subscribers a month to our newsletter the last few months ( we are in our liathroidi, i wish we were but we are in our hoop, that’s why it begs the question, who does  the extra subscribers benefit?) so the bill for sending out the newsletter has gone from 110 euro a month to 220 euro a month with Mailchimp…now who is sending all the bots i wonder??…anyway, the remedy , is this, if you dont open the newsletter, then you could face the axe, so if you want to keep getting it, then open it!! Volaa! Those who haven’t opened it for the last 8 weeks or so  will face the chop…eliminating mainly bots we hope….if you notice you have stopped getting the newsletter over the next few weeks then please get in touch…..we  won’t be doing cuts till end of July so will remind you about it… but open it if you want to keep it folks!!

Right sin e for this week party people

Hon the rebels

Thanks for listening

Ray, Shane, young Adam and Mia

( nearly 8 friends!)

To be honest, the release and everyone connected with it will hold a special place in my heart forever, so look a  big sincere thank you to all of you who supported it, when I’m old and grey that album will bring a tear of happiness to me and hopefully some of ye as well. xx

Bit of a story behind this, not sure if ye know but Sturgil ruptured his vocal chords in late 2021, he had some contract issues as well so is returning as Johnny Blue Skies…new album but hard to see info or hear music from it, not sure how the injury is but presume its repaired…do they repair? I dont know…new album 12th July.

Going to hand ye over to Shane now as he takes ye down the road with announcements etc….a fair bit going on this week.

Sound, Ray! Hi all! Yeah, a load going on, and I’m under the weather (again!)

Thanks Adam for covering the newsletter last week dude.

Here’s the list:

Here’s the aul Instagram page if ye want to have a look. https://www.instagram.com/musiczone.ie/?hl=en

Back to you, Ray. Cheers.

Thanks Shane!

Before we go, I have to mention Mick’s gig last Friday night in the marquee….i thought it was so special, it was brilliant, the sound was amazing I thought, crystal clear every instrument…ah it was really special… Susans vocals my oh my…I bounced out of the place.

I was chatting to Mick’s brother beforehand and asked a silly question “ how is he, is he nervous?” , …” insane not to be nervous”… so he was proverbially bricking it as we would politely say here in Cork…course he was….a moment arrived 3 or 4 songs in at the start of “ the small fire” where Mick tells a great story about his grandfather burning down the barn in the homeplace when he was a small child…there is a bit to the story, Mick told it in about 3 sentences and then said….”that story is usually a lot longer” and he paused “but to be honest,  i’m terrified”….it was so human…and honest….the crowd got it and we all just erupted…it was special and emotional, i’m not gonna lie, i had a little well up …had to get myself together , didn’t want Bobby to catch me crying like…the gig went from strength to strength after that point….Ricky Lynch was as always  brillaint for his solo cameo, another beautiful moment was that…take it on the chin with the clan and Ricky and Andy Dunne another highlight…in the gutter never sounded better…ahh it was top top notch…a great gig by a great band.

Right sin e for this week so folks

Thanks for listening as always

Ray, Shane, young Adam and Mia

June 19th: BRAND NEW Lazarus Soul, Coldplay and Van Morrison! Big thanks, and a day out at the Marquee!

Hi folks

Hope all is well with ye all.

Thanks to those of you who came out in support of us and the Hedge Schools album launch in the siopa last Saturday…another special day….we are only about 13 LPs short of our target , twould be nice to hit it and we will im sure over the next few weeks….there are 10 or so signed copies in the shop, if anyone is still interested…Go raibh mile maith agaibh aris.

Shane has a couple of days off so myself and the boy Adam on newsletter duty this week, so maybe a little different.

We have got news of a very exciting release for the shop in the last few days…yes one of our favorites has a new album coming out on July 5th…A LAZARUS SOUL is back with a new long player and CD “ no flowers grow in cement gardens” . i think a lot of ye know im an absolutely huge fan of this band so im so excited for this release. They are in Coughlans for a show on Friday the 23rd of August, and we will be there in force …there are only a few tickets left for this so get on it and we will see you there,  for a beverage and what will be a cracking gig.

Here’s more on the new record

After a long gestation period, the band (Brian Brannigan, Anton Hegarty, Julie Bienvenu & Joe Chester), half of

whom live in Ireland, half in France, convened in Miracle Studios, Rennes, for four days of intensive recording, live,

together in a single room, their first opportunity to do so since global events had kept them apart for two years. The

session, a fury of largely improvised and incendiary versions of ten brand new Brannigan-penned songs, forms the

basis of this new record which also features guest contributions from legendary violinist, Steve Wickham. The album

was recorded and mixed in France by Joe Chester.

A super band with in my opinion one of the greatest songwriters to ever graces these shores…Brians songs put you in the song, an incredible talent to have…and everything Joe touches has such quality, he is a master at what he does…more than ably backed up by Anto and Julie, just a super super band….heres is “ black Maria” from the new album.

Black Maria (Single Edit)

One other one to mention is there is a really limited KNEECAP picture disc version of the new album…announced Monday the 17th and stock landed today….there are just 200 copies of this one time press for the Irish Market and only available in 10 shops across the country…we have some now.

Right folks going to hand ye over to Adam this week…if there is a few down the roads or any other ramblings….you have a blank canvas ( christ what did i just do)
Righty sooo… Hope yere all well, firstly I want to say a massive thanks to everyone who came out to my little acoustic gig with the band on Saturday. The reception we got melted my heart. Its the start of our journey really so we’ll see what happens with it! Meant alot to see ye there and hope ye enjoyed! Watch this space for more news;)

Nuff of tha! We’ll move to the down the roads now I suppose! First up we have Van Morrison with a really nice release me thinks. Its called “Live at Orangefield” and its out on vinyl and cd on the 2nd of August. Heres a bit about it:

“Midnight Special, a skiffle group, consisted of fellow pupils, John McCullough, tea-chest bass, Cyril Downey, guitar, Billy Ruth, guitar, and Walter Blakely on washboard with Van on guitar and vocals. In August 2014, Van Morrison returned to perform three shows as a fond farewell to his alma mater as it prepared to close its doors for the final time. Live at Orangefield is a specially curated album, of recordings from these very shows.

When it first opened in 1957 Orangefield was a boys’ school, then the girls’ school was added before both schools merged and remained so until Orangefield was finally closed due to falling numbers of pupils in 2014. Three years later it was demolished. For roughly sixty years both schools had provided an educational and social focus to many thousands of young students from east Belfast and further afield.”

Thats it, hope ye all have a great week!:)
Thanks Adam!

Looking forward to Friday folks, summer solstice , kids are out of school for the summer and Mick is in the Marquee….really looking forward to it.

Big gig for the boy, biggest hometown gig i would think ( done a co headline many years ago with John Spillane in the Marquee)  , will be  a really special one i think….for those of you who have not seen Mick with the whole band, you are in for a treat ( probably 7 or 8 of them on stage) ….they are special live and they will rock the gaff in parts….super musicians one and all…Susan O Neill involved also, more quality,  i think this will be a really special show to be honest….Mick in the Marquee has a ring to it a bit like Rory in the hall …folks still talking about them shows as they will this one i think…might see some of ye there!

Oh a btw i might go to the Cork match Saturday yet so if i’m missing i apologize in advance…Adam and Mia will have the reigns if so…50/50 if i go or not!

Right sin e this week folks

Thanks for listening as always

Ray, Shane, Young Adam and Mia

June 12th: RORY Story, HEDGE SCHOOLS Live in-store/vinyl release, unreleased JOHNNY CASH album, cool coloured reissues and d’video

Hi folks

All is well I hope.

I meant to mention last week that the new Rory documentary on RTE was very good …a little short but good…a bit emotional …fierce loss Rory is…well worth a watch, it’s still on the player.

The bit where Brian May was talking about Rory’s sound and he said feck it i’m just going to ask him…you could tell from May he was a little taken aback by Rory’s sincere and no bullshit answer to what a lot might consider to be a loaded question…you could tell he was seriously impressed with the mans decency…i have a little story…couple in the shop in douglas court circa 2013/2014 i reckon….dont know them and don’t think they were ever in again but Rory came up in conversation…” we were out in St Olivers visiting the parents grave there a few weeks back, and herself was walking down the path out of the cemetery ahead of me a bit, when a  man stopped her and they were talking …he passed me then and we nodded at one another …i caught up with her and said to her do you know who that was…she answered no…i said Christ what did he want ,,,oh he was looking for Rory Gallaghers grave…i said to her, that was Brian May from Queen”

May was in Dublin at the time for the launch of that Ben Elton Queen stage show and got into his car or probably got on a plane …or he might have walked, i don’t know how he got there but he took the time to seek out Rory’s grave…2 decent fellas i reckon.

Speaking of decent fellas, Pat Barrett from Hedge schools is with us this Saturday @ 1pm to launch our beautiful venture “ the end of the winding day” vinyl release …first time and only time ever i’d say for this record … .but it will have some story attached to it … .Pat and Joe Chester are the maestros behind it, the creators.

Here’s the story again… the record was caught up in the Dublin vinyl mess, it wasn’t going to happen, Pat wasn’t in a place financially to get it out…i offered to help…few things went a little against us since the off… from the first time it was pre sold on Dublin Vinyl there was 50/60 preorders, those folks were to be refunded by DV….they were not unfortunately…we ( rightly and absolutely) are going to fulfill those orders but fulfilling them has a cost ….basically 7.80 euro a shipment, post and packing, that’s what it is….by 50 folks….the bones of 400 euro…so we are going ask these folks to send us the 8 quid and we will ship the record….Pat will ask on his socials also…some will some won’t, we will ship anyway

Pat will message the DV folks…i think its ok to ask for that  shipment charge.

So all in all the 300 records cost 3018 euro….that increased a bit from what we hoped it would be with unforeseen ( green to this) costs like DMM / Lacquer Cutting €374.00 , DMM / Lacquer Processing €254.00 and a  pallet delivery from Europe….so yep 3k to recoup, knew what i signed up for, was happy to sign up for it, right thing to do, but the shop contrary to the yachting world telegraph  reports does not have hugely deep pockets and 3K is a lot of money for us…but am i glad i did it…hell yeah. I emailed folks who bought it last week to thank them and Shane ( our Shane) sent a lovely response.

“ We’ll sell them alright. Great record. Thanks for doing it, something you’ll always have to your name. A piece of cultural history.” I think he summed it up for me with the last few words.

As it stands ( that’s if everyone who has committed to buying one, does buy it) we will be at 1900 quid…thanks to Luca Records in Waterford, Rollercoaster in Kilkenny, Steamboat in Limerick, OMG in Galway and Tower and Spindizzy in Dublin who are all supporting the release of the record…thanks folks.

So we are a little away from the 3k….i hit that, i’m out and Pat gets the rest of the records…that’s the deal, end of story.

We are getting lost in the accounting here folks, ( we will get there) the reason i wanted to help was the music, the music is beautiful, just beautiful , the space in the music …this record is a thing of beauty, that’s why i wanted to help, it more than deserves to be out in the world, that’s why i wanted to help, i consider it an Irish classic, that’s why i  wanted to help, it was for the music.

Pat is with us Saturday at 1 pm playing songs from the record, signing records and having the chats ,  he says he owes it to me and that he owes it to himself to come down and do the instore…support for it will be very much appreciated.

Right hope to see ye Saturday, i dont want folks to feel under pressure to  buy the hedge schools record but if you get something out of the music and want to buy it, then we are delighted folks…so its all good xx

Here’s a tune, give it a listen…the album as an album from start to finish works beautifully but here’s a tune…nice message in the visual here!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwJpZwZoIuQ

Right onto the business of selling records, above was different.

So out this Friday the 14th of June we will have

Then Friday the 21st of June we will have

Main attack this week is for Friday the 28th May

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zumW9D47Ync

Right so going to pass ye on to Shane now as he runs down the road a bit with ye…

Cheers, Ray. Howdy everyone.
Exciting week for the shop with the release of the Hedge Schools vinyl. As Ray said, it’s class.
I remember listening to it a lot while we worked in the siopa, could well have been back in the Douglas Court days. Sometimes albums can blow over your head when you’re working but that was one that always stood out.
Looking forward to giving it a few spins on vinyl now.

Some biggish coloured vinyl reissues coming down the line to mention. First up, Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication is getting reissued on red and blue 2 LP vinyl. Out on July 26th.
Their biggest selling album.
And LINKIN PARK – Hybrid Theory is getting a yellow vinyl reissue on the same day. Also by them, Meteora and The Hunting Party both on coloured vinyl too.

There’s a cool 14 CD box set of live recordings by Pete Townshend – Live in Concert 1985-2001 on the 26th of July also.

A very limited amount of BLUE NILE albums will be coming into us on vinyl. ‘Hats’‘A Walk Across the Road’‘Peace at Last’ and ‘High’. Fastest fingers first on those I’d say.

Here’s a list of what else is coming:

Lot of coloured reissues this week. Think dat’s all.

Here’s Adam’s video from last weekend: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C79mf92tdqL/?igsh=dnN5cm5obDVqNGVx

Thanks Shane kid.

June 5th: Open letter to VILLAGERS, old SPRINTS pink vinyl, new JAMIE XX, new/live MORRISSEY and BLUR, TALKING HEADS – SMS reissue and good luck with the exams

Hi Everyone

Hope all is well!

Thanks to those of you who were in for Niamh Regan on Saturday, it was a beautiful day but we still had a lovely crowd…thank ye. Thanks to Niamh also, she was super, really good songs she has…i think it’s the first time we had an encore at a music zone instore…twas great!

And do you know what also is great …the new Villagers record is only excellent …every song…in my opinion Villagers best work so far, lyrically really top notch, melodies brilliant as usual…it’s on constant repeat for me …a super record imo.

This is a bit of an open letter to Conor…

Hi Conor

I kind of dropped the ball…we met briefly after your show in Coughlans sometime last year….i was nervous and had a couple of beers on board.

I asked you if you would consider playing in the shop sometime….you said you would !!

You offered your email which I thought I would remember…which i didn’t!! Big Ball drop uimhir a haon.

New album “ that Golden time” was announced some months back and I don’t know why I didn’t act on our conversation…ball drop uimhir a do … .oh you plonker Raymond.

Then about 4 weeks before release i said to myself, should chance Conor O’Brien re a little instore with the new record…so went on to Villagers website only to see a blast of instores planned for the new record launch….agghhh i was so annoyed with myself….i felt i couldn’t go asking then, plans were in place…oh you plonker Raymond.

Anyways, here is a polite open invitation  to visit our humble shop someday Conor, anyday.

Last week I mentioned a big Irish announcement. Couldn’t say it as the newsletter was going out before the official announcement but SNOW PATROL are back with a brand new one called ‘The Forest is the Path’. And there’s a limited Irish exclusive green vinyl of it.
Their first in a good few years.
Noelle (the wife) is a fan of the Grey’s Anatomy series, and she says that if you hear Snow Patrol it’s ominous and shit’s going to get emotional!

Here’s a new trailer for it, with snippets of tracks: THE FOREST IS THE PATH ↟

Agus iad seo:

  • JAMIE XX – In Waves – brand new album, looking forward to this myself, his last one with the colouredy cover is a bit of a modern classic. CD, std LP, indies white vinyl or 3 LP deluxe version. – 20/9/24

Oh, we got stock last week of the 2nd solo album from PETE MAC of the Cork grunge band PARADOX. It’s called ‘HiberNation’ and was recorded during Covid lockdown.
Been listening to it myself, some great tracks on it and musicians. Bits of grunge, alt rock and folk in it.
Here’s a track from it, lovely video too: https://youtu.be/25G5B-syAhE?si=527O243cVQEFhsvk

We were a bit up the walls of late getting the 2 Johnnies CD and vinyl posted out to people so didn’t get a chance to do a video.

Think that’s everything from me anyway. Back to you Ray so. Cheers.

Thanks Shane!

Sin e really for this week folks

Thanks for listening as always
