Here’s some info on the festival…

In late February, Cork Opera House and Coughlan’s Live have come together again to celebrate Cork and its ever growing love and demand for live music.  Nowin its third year, Right Here Right Now is a celebration of the vibrant and eclectic music scene here in Cork.
This year, Mick Flannery and Valerie June will join the Cork Opera House Concert Orchestra for the festival opening on Saturday, the 22nd of February. The success of the last two festivals has led to the decision to expand the programme. RHRN2020 welcomes a second night with the orchestra in an evening of Folk and Trad Music with Donal Lunny, Máirtín O’Connor, Nell Ní Chróinín, and Strung. With more announcements to follow, RHRN 2020 promises to be an unmissable weekend of music.
We are giving away two tickets to Mick Flannery & Valerie June, and two tickets to An Evening of Folk & Trad with Donal Lunny, Máirtín O’Connor, Nell Ní Chróinín and Strung AND a €100 voucher for Musiczone.

Video up again this week up here… Winner to the €50 Voucher for the Albums of the Year contest announced in the video so if you entered be sure to watch..

Moving on to releases for the 24th of Jan and to be fair it’s not a bad week of releases… Nothing jaw droppingly wowzer but solid week methinks for Jan… Pay weekend and all i’d say.. I think here in To(u) gher we will be more dependent on a solid release schedule as there is little or no foot traffic really… So we are depending on folks making a decision to get out to us or buy off the website!.

I did tell ye before Terry said this blah blah blurb is only an advert… Well and i’ll say it quietly… He’s right… But at least we is honest about it…

Anyway the 24th of Jan sees the new album by WIRE called “Mind Hive” on CD, LP and Limited Embossed Sleeve Indies Only LP… It’s on the pink flag label via Cargo… Heres a fine tune from it… Bit more poppy maybe and will get stuck in your head I think

Also via Cargo is the new BLACK LIPS album called “Sing In A World hTat’s Falling Apart”… It’s on CD, LP and DELUXE red vinyl edition (FIRELP573X), comes with a die cut spot gloss sleeve & poster. This is for Indies only. Both LPs come with downloads. CD is a gatefold wallet sleeve.

Heres a tune from the record…

PIAS for the 24th of Jan have the new album by WOLF PARADE on Sub Pop records… “Thin Mind” it’s called and its their 5th long player… CD, LP and Neon Orange Indies Only LP also… Codes are included with the LP versions… Fine lead tune again… The intro sounds very familiar to me but cant put my finger on it…

Pias also have the new album by YORKSTON/THORNE/KHAN on Domino.

Warner for the 24th of Jan have a reissue of the self titled album by ELECTRONIC with messers Bernard Sumner and John Martin Maher… I better stop, the last time I jestfully messed with a Mancunian our shop was nearly burnt to the ground the next day (more of that in the video )… The reissue from 1991 is out next Friday and we can do a €21 best price job on pre-orders.

Warner also has a brand new ANNIHILATOR album “Ballistic, Sadistic” as well as a tour edition of the new BEHEMOTH album “I Loved You At Your Darkest”  CD/BluRay version, and there is a DAVE CLARKE 5 2LP and CD release out also…

Warner also has SUPERGRASS “The Strange Ones” 94 TO 08 Deluxe Box Set which has 6LPs, 13CDs, a book and a 7” single… €190 best price job if anyone is interested… As well as a DLP version also.

No new material one it i’m afraid folks. Here’s the details of the box.

Released on 24th January 2020, “The Strange Ones: 1994-2008” is career spanning deluxe box set containing the 6 Supergrass original albums on picture disc LP and CD, 13 bonus CDs containing: Unreleased live material, B-sides, remixes, rarities, studio out-takes, demos, acoustic versions, new mixes, a deluxe book with rare photos and band quotes, posters and button badges. Features over 6 hours of previously unreleased audio material. Compiled in association with Supergrass.
Part of a multi-format release also including a 2LP & 1CD ‘Best Of’, featuring their biggest hits, compiled by the band.

7” Single
Caught By The Fuzz / Richard III 2020 Remixes

Supergrass is 10 – button badges x 8

Lastly Warner have JOHN FOGERTY “50 Year Trip : Live at Red Rocks” CD or DLP version, it was recorded in June 2019..

Proper for the 24th of Jan have a new PET SHOP BOYS album called “Hotspot” on X2 RECORDS. 10 new tracks from Mr.TENNANT and Mr. LOWE on CD Jewel or Gatefold Vinyl.

Sony for the 24th of Jan have a DEPECHE MODE CD Box called  MODE… 18 CDs in the box… Any interest then i’ll try to get a good price on it… It’s going to be expensive… Best hope 200 bucks id say…

Universal for the 24th have the next batch of THIN LIZZY vinyl reissues… Big hitters here in “Nightlife”, “Fighting” and of course “Jailbreak”… Can do a best price pre-order job on these €21 also people … Where ya going with the one euro Raymond boy…? Well i’m trying to do as good a price as I can and  I know a euro doesn’t matter a shite in the scheme of things but with these best price jobs I still try to make a certain % margin and it makes me feel better when i’m at that % margin… So humour me I suppose!

Universal also for the 24th have some SAM COOKE VINYL reissues “Encore” and the self titled one also as well as “The Complete Keen Years 57 – 60” 5CD set by Sam, there’s a vinyl release of RIVERDANCE “Music from the Show”, there’s a reworking of the latest BREAKING BENJAMIN album and there is a a reissue of “Live in Moscow” 2CD or 2LP by ELTON JOHN and RAY COOPER.

Lastly from universal NICHOLAS GODIN (AIR) has a new atmospheric album out on Because music called “Concrete and Glass”… It’s available as a CD/LP combo or stand alone cd.

THE ORCHARD for the 24th of jan has new albums by GILL LANDRY, THE WOOD BROTHERS, CASPIAN and OCTOBER DRIFT.

So there the releases for the 24th (or the ones I thought were worth hawking to ye anyway) so I suppose without being drop dead gorgeous, not a bad week.

Right so… The greatest best of 2019 albums lists ever made part infinite… Far response to this so thank ye all (who did) for participating… Few hours work in getting them sorted but I was excited about it if i’m to be honest… T’was fair close in the end, and overall very close also, we will have a live draw for the €50 Voucher Winner on the video as Bill O’Herlihy would say LIVE… Not cant get more exciting than that!!

There was only 10 points between the Top 3 in the overall category, and the winner to be fair appeared most frequently on the lists… So deserved I suppose… The MZ table don’t lie..

And a remarkable result in the Irish album category.. A fecking draw… I kid you not…123 votes each… It’s 00.18 on Friday morning and I have just recounted them… Yep 123 votes each!!
(you’ll hear it more in the coming weeks people… Your vote matters!)

More on our special night on the 8th of Feb next week also as the evening slipped by without me saying to much about it…

Bombay Bicycle Club Return, and We’re Back Together So It’s Time For A Partyyyyyyyyyyy!

Hi Everyone,
How’s it going?
Hope all is well enough…

Not a whole heap released today really, (the STOCKTON’s WING release was moved to next Friday the 17th, the re-ups are starting to land back in like Fontaines and Lankum and more) but we do have the excellent DAVID KEENAN album on CD and LP, had a few listens today and he’s the real deal in fairness, worth checking out..

Also new FAT FREDDY’S DROPCHARLIES ANGEL Limited Vinyl Picture Disc, a new FIELD MUSIC LP on Limited Red Vinyl, and TOWNES VAN ZANDT reissue.

Video back up and running!! Check it out here!!

Next week Friday the 17th we have the aforementioned STOCKTON’S WING Compilation on LP and CD.

Also via Universal for the 17th we have the new BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB album on Caroline / Island records, their first record in 6 years… It’s on CD, LP or Ltd Deluxe 2LP pressed at 45 RPM… Downloads included with the vinyl presses… Singles sound decent enough on this.

HALSEY is back with a new album “Manic” on Virgin / EMI on CD or Vinyl as well as a new MARCUS KING solo album “El Dorado” on Spinefarm Records again CD and Vinyl and lastly there is a new ANTI FLAG album.

Quick boring housekeeping.. Opening hours… Same as last week… Closed on Sundays and Mondays… 10.30 to 6 on Tuesdays, 2 to 6 on Wednesdays, 10 to 6 on Thursday and Friday and 10 to 5 on Saturday… Deanrock Cottages on google will put you right at the entrance to our Business Park… We are in there alright right next door to rock bingo… Sin sin till I repeat myself again next week … We are here.. I know its the first week of Jan but we are here..

Right so, as Frank Gallagher may shamelessly say “we’re having a f**king parteee”… Well I don’t want to scare anyone away and it’s not exactly the whole sceal… A bit of a shindig alright, but not Gallagher style … The corporation are throwing a few birds at one stone alright… Here’s the sceal… Hope you might consider it.

Cork’s own JOHN BLEK has a new record ‘The Embers’ out on Friday the 7th of Feb and we here at the MZ Corp are hosting a very special in-store to coincide with the album launch on Saturday evening the 8th of Feb at 7PM kick off… Here’s “empty pockets” from what is another beautiful record.

So it’s our first in-store in To(u)gher and we have had a fairly hairy 5 months but like Elton John… Blah blah blah… Bob is back today which is brilliant (a newsletter in itself) Shane boy is here all the time, again brilliant and a lot of ye have dug us out of this hole we were in… So we are having a little night (well hopefully a big night!) where we invite ye folks to our new humble abode in the heart of Togher for what promises to be a brilliant instore.

We shall have some beverages if you want a beverage (if you drink funny types of beverages, bring your own!)… Try persuade the better halfs to drop ye over or bring a driver or just drive yourself and call in and say hello… Carpark is ours for the night so will be plenty room out there.

So it’s an instore party with some top quality original tunes by Mr Blek,  a thank you to Shane boy, a welcome back to the Bob man and a little nod to our shareholders… Thanks.

The corporation is offering a 20% discount off one item on the night…. So if you have been eyeing something up but never got to it… Saturday the 8th is the night for it… Terms and conditions apply like any good corporation… It can’t be anything you have away already or anything released since Jan 1st 2020 and I might have to see on the stuff that is reduced already .. So basically I can make them up as I go along… Ah no no no its basically those conditions above… So pencil it in with the boss or bring em along, bring the kids if you want… We would love to see ye… Some of us may drift to a public house as the night darkens.

And don’t worry either… Going out can be like going to the dentist for folks our age but sure ye have the info now and a few weeks notice… See what ye can do or cant as the case may be.

Warner for the 17th of Jan have a new COURTEENERS album on Parlophone, DAVID BYRNE releases “American Utopia on Broadway”, reissue on Rhino of MC5s “Kick Out The Jams” as well as STEVIE NICKS “Bella Donna”  and UNCLE TUPELO “Anodyne”… Lastly Warner have a MIDGE URE Singles Collection.

PIAS for the 17th Jan have new albums by BILL FAY, ALICE BOMAN, ALGIERS and a reissue by DWIGHT YOAKAM of “Blame the Vain”.

The ORCHARD for the 17th of Jan have a new album by AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF THE DEAD as well as a SONS OF APOLLO Limited 2CD of new album “MMXX”.

Right so albums of the year… Drum roll… Eehhh nah….. I tell ye, i’m getting fairly excited over it  as its coming together nicely but i am chasing one last push… So until next Weds to have your say… Email us top 5 albums of 2019… 50 euro voucher up for grabs but the more enter the better picture we get of the taste in the siopa… As Stephen Stills might say for what its worth, here are my top 5’s..

Albums of the year.

1. A LAZARUS SOUL – THE D THEY PUT BETWEEN THE R & L (obviously if I have it as my album of the year, it resonated with me… And man did it do that… Every song tells such a story that you are transported into the characters lives… I think it’s a savage piece of work, hence numero uno…shades of new model army in parts)

  1. Saving Grace : The Everyman
  2. Mick Flannery : St Lukes
  3. Villagers : Cypress Avenue
  4. John Blek : The Seomra
  5. Microdisney : Cypress Avenue

I may have preferred some of the instores as they would be more personal to me but I went for remote gigs.
That’s my tuppence worth … It’s all subjective. It was a good year for new music I felt, a few months of it completely passed me by… Nearly everyone has different votes but in general a nice blend rises to the top so shout in yours to us.

More on these next week but releases on the 24th from THIN LIZZY (reissues), SUPERGRASS (BEST OF) , MOZ new single, WIRE new album, BLACK LIPS new album, ELECTRONIC self titled release… (so more next week from John Martin Maher) and WOLF PARADE (new).

Shout at us on email is best if there’s anything you see or want us to pop away… Be delighted .

Sin e for this week so I suppose,
Thanks for listening

A tentative step and an exciting debut by David Keenan

Hi everyone,

Hope all is well and that christmas was safe and peaceful…welcome to the roaring 20s !?!

Well, back on the horse, tentatively…like the rest of ye, tentatively also no doubt.

Im back a week earlier than normal with the newsletter as i suppose i gotta keep reminding ye folks of us …but it will be short and sweet…you know that whole tentative thing.

Right so opening hours… and these will be more or less consistent for the foreseeable future.

The shop will be closed on Sunday and Mondays and  open 2 to 6 on Wednesdays.

Explain yourself Raymond you lazy sod…

Well…Sunday is with the smallies and ideally zero shop work will be done …so yes lazy sod day.

I have decided to do my orders from home on Mondays to help me get a good start to the week…get a bit ahead of myself…so that newsletters arent been sent out on saturday nights at midnight!! Ease my workload a little …so that’s the craic with Mondays…i hope ye understand.

Weds has always been wholesaling day for me for over 10 years now …to cut a long story short…i sell kids dvds and a few cds on floor spinners in a few shops around the county ( i do it on a weds only) ..i started it in 2009 when things were really starting to go shite and it probably helped keep us open in 10, 11 and 12 before things started to settle…its less and less now but I still need to get out for 3 or 4 hours every weds so that’s the craic with weds …i’m not polishing my yachts!

So i hope that’s cool…if anyone wants me to hang around on a friday evening, thats cool also just give me an auld email and we can sort it out.

Tis a bit different now, i hope you can understand.

Right so, first point of major note is the albums of 2019 reminder …come on folks get them over to us…the top 5 albums of 2019, also top 5 Irish albums of 2019 and if you want top 5 gigs of 2019 …50 euro voucher for the siopa for one participant …if you only want to send your top 5 full stop that’s cool… we would like as good a reflection as possible of the taste of our dear patrons so top 5s please folks …thanks to those who have already.

Right so before we dive into short term releases and mise repeating myself from the last newsletter…there are new albums on the near horizons from DRIVE BY TRUCKERSTAME IMPALA, JONATHAN WILSON, GERRY CINNAMON, WIRE, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, GREEN DAY, PET SHOP BOYS , GREG DULLI ( AFGHAN WHIGS) and ISOBEL CAMPELL to name a few so hopefully it  will be an OK start to the year in the current abode…unit 4 deanrock business park …nb nb nb use Deanrock cottages on google maps or sat navs etc and you will be right outside the business park where we are …Deanrock cottages folks…then we are right next door to Rock Bingo …obviously the next few months could be scary so if you need anything, try to think of us…sound out.

Right so .releases for the 10th of Jan …the biggie i suppose is the DAVID KEENAN album “ a beginners guide to bravery” on CD or LP , there are some TOWNES VAN ZANDT vinyl reissues of “ our mother the mountain” and self titled album.

Here’s a taster to the much anticipated DAVID KEENAN album

Uni for the 10th have the STOCKTON’S WING collection which features hits, rare tracks and unreleased and lp on this one also.

Uni have a limited edition picture disc to the new Charlies Angels soundtrack, some nice Blue Note vinyl  reissues by ART BLAKEY, PETE LE ROCA and TONY WILLIAMS.

Sony for the 10th have a new CD by KESHA.

Started reductions on the vinyl sections over the last 3 or so working days…so a  nice few reductions at the counter and lots more in the section …as I left work earlier today i was just starting R so a fair bit through them…hope to finish them tomorrow…20, 30, 40 and 50 percent off in places so worth a little look if in.

Pias for the 10th of Jan have a new FIELD MUSIC album…a concept album about the after effects of world war one…heres a taster

as well as THE FLAMING LIPS featuring the colorado symphony orchestra “ the soft bulletin” recorded live at red rocks on 2lps.

Sin about e so for this so folks,

A tentative step for all mankind this week

Thanks for listening,

If you want to order anything, the email is always open!!

Boss Man Is Back, Another Disappointment in the Physical Industry, and A Night That Will Live Long In The Memory

Hi everyone,
How’s the form with ye… Hope all is well out there.. I’m back after a lovely break to be honest… Great to have the time with the clann.. Back to it.. Sure.. Well good to have it and be able to do it… Releases in the shop this week are the excellent THE MURDER CAPITAL debut ‘When I Have Fears’ (more on that later.. only found out early in the week actually that the bands manager is a daughter of the City legend and ex R.O.I player Damien Richardson), new ones from RIDE, SLEATER-KINNY, FRANK TURNER, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, DJ KHALED,  a CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL ‘Live at Woodstock’ LP, a new GIRL BAND 7”, a JACKSON BROWNE Reissue and finally an ZZ TOP vinyl set.

Video up again at the following link..

Before we talk about the other night I just want to have a little moan.. Sure, I am back.. The TOOL release… Isn’t that just a mebs for shops… A big big release, something we would have done very very well with if it wasn’t such a mebs.. 90 Euro best price on the CD.. Granted it’s fancy… But we are not going to have to hire security for the day of release are we… Sure we will do very to sell 3 or 4 max i’d say.. Look in the their defence, they have always done innovative physical products.. But maybe offer a standard product as well as the fancy version.. It may not bode well for the LP release.. I have tried to find out but to no avail.. Release date moved to October now I believe… No idea of price on it..  It’s just a pity for Tool fans who like to buy physical products (what we sell) that your only option is 90 Euro… I believe Pledge Music is facing bankruptcy in the States so artists / bands who have used Pledge to collect monies for recording and making records have lost said money over the last 6 to 9 months… A complete disaster for those involved.. A simple standard CD version of the Tool album would have kept physicals away for the streams… Decision made way above my pay grade and for their own good reasons I suppose… But from where I and the shop(s) are concerned.. Its kind of madness

Right so moving on to releases for the 23rd of August.. .Not a whole heap happening really… Sony have new CDs by TYLER THE CREATOR and RICK ROSS

Universal for the 23rd of August have the new album by TAYLOR SWIFT ‘Lover’, standard CD and a fancy box available.. Uni have a deluxe CD version of MASSIVE ATTACK’s ‘Mezzanine’ with some bonus material and rarities on CD 2… Uni also have the brand new album from NEW MODEL ARMY ‘From Her’ on CD or 2LP…
Universal have the vinyl reissues of the first two records by JULIAN COPE‘s band ‘The Teardrop Explodes’, albums ‘Kilmanjaro’ and ‘Wilder’ reissued, as well as the vinyl release of ELTON JOHN’s ‘Rocketman’ soundtrack, and lastly some fine LP reissues on the Verve label by the likes of MCCOY TURNER, SONNY ROLLINS, CHARLES MINGUS, and DIZZIE GILLEPSIE.

PIAS for the 23rd of Aug have some JOAN AS POLICEWOMAN LP reissues on coloured limited vinyl, ‘Real Life’, ‘To Survive’, and ‘The Deep Field’ out, as well as MAPS reissue on coloured vinyl of ‘Turning the Mind’.

ROM for the 23rd have 4 Laurent Garnier EPs reissued.

The Orchard for the 23rd have the new CEREMONY album.

Back to the Murder Capital gig the other night in the crane lane… Thanks to those of ye who came out and supported it.. If I didn’t get to say thanks in person.. Hope you read the thank you here.. Greatly appreciated.. These events are great but I find them stressful to be honest.. You want everybody to be happy. Band, management, record company, venue and most importantly the people who attend.. Thanks to all of those above, and to Bob, Shane, Tim and Adam for making it work… We had a full house in the end.. The Crane was jointed… A brilliant atmosphere and a savage, intense, guttural, emotional performance by the band.. Wow they were / are incredible.. If they can show progression in years to come, they never play in venues that size again.. So exciting for us to be involved and to see a queue of people after the show waiting to get their CDs and Records and Posters signed.. The 5 lads were spot on… Really appreciative of their position in the music world and I think they intend to take their opportunity with both hands.. I really like them all and it seemed they really liked each other… Lovely banter and commandership amongst them… Not only were the musically very tight but they seemed humanely very tight also…
Seeing the sound check is something that will live long in my memory… The whole night will.. It could, and I hope it is, one for the record books.. Im converted anyway, im in…
Few Photos up here on our Facebook!

I could write another 2 pages about the gig but best you see them yourselves at some point..

Anyway, finally Warner for the 23rd have a reissue of MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE ‘Black Parade Is Dead’ and a new album by CROBOT also…

Sin é for this week folks

Slipknot Return With A New Album, Feile 19 Ticket Competition, and A Cooperative Bolloxology Report

Hi everyone,
Hope all is well out there..
My own last few lines for a couple of weeks.. 2 to be exact.. (One week off!).. The one way newsletter street
Releases in the siopa this week include the THOM YORKE ‘Anima’ 2LP Orange Vinyl and Book Box Set, BLUR ‘Live at the BBC’ 4 Track 10” Vinyl, SHREK O.S.T. first timer on vinyl, new albums by LLOYD COLE, TY SEGALL, CARNIFEX, a new IDLES 7′‘, the POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU O.S.T on limited vinyl of 2500 worldwide, a SPOON compilation LP, and reissues by JASON ISBELL, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, NINA SIMONE, SERJ TANKIAN, and BIG COUNTRY.

Video up this week, Bob man on duty for it.. Will be a short one.. Definitely beginning to feel like late summer releases!

Well this newsletter is a bit of a cooperative between myself and the Bob man… So i’ll do a bit and Bobby can tidy up my mess.. Probably rings a bell Bob i’d say… Before I go on… Two quick things… We have two tickets up for grabs for Feile 19… Buy the Feile Classical CD from us for €8 and you enter the draw for the two tickets… I know I’m not a bookmaker but my guess is you would stand a 5% chance of winning tickets… Wrong job Raymond, in some ways only!!!
You can pick up the CD online here, or of course in-store as well…

Right second thing… This MURDER CAPITAL gig we are involved in is something worth considering… Cracking Irish band in my opinion.. Have been listening and reading a lot about them recently and they ain’t to keen on the whole social media bolloxology… Admirable, very very admirable in my opinion… In an age where we are poisoned by bolloxology on our social medias… I find it great that a new (Irish) band are kind of saying ‘f**k that tripe… Come see us live and see what you think’.. Old school. Brilliant, admirable and deserves to be heard.. And for the last time i’ll say it… Ye have that chance.. Here’s the first two tunes live from a radio station..

Pre-order the album below and gain entry to the Cork album launch gig in the Crane on Thursday Aug 15th at 7PM.

Speaking of bolloxology on the auld social media etc…. When the Musiczone Empire was at it’s busiest 04, 05 maybe to a lesser extent 2006.. I used to do nada… No SM, no website… Pull cup the shutter in the morning and pull it down at night and do a few hours paperwork every month and that was it… No we have to poison ye weekly with this and daily with the other social (me hole) stuff.. Can’t take a leaf from these young lads book… Be gone in a few months… It’s all about the bolloxology now… Fair play to ye lads..

Right so, moving on to music for the 9th of August… Starting off, WARNER have the new SLIPKNOT album ‘We Are Not Your Kind’ via Roadrunner… Available on 2LP, CD or CD with a t-shirt.. 30 bucks for them if anyones interested… Also €30 best price on the 2LP if anyone interested in that… Sound…

Also out is the STRANGER THINGS 3 Soundtrack, and new vinyl releases from SOLANGE and KAISER CHIEFS, a new BTS album on CD, BOWIE AND DIETRICH “Just A Gigolo’ Soundtrack, and reissues by UB40, GREG ALLMAN, and STATUS QUO…

Video up here again for this week folks

Couple of nice gigs over the weekend before last.. VILLAGERS put on a great musical treat… One issue the chatter brigade seemed to be intern… Ah look some have more tolerance I suppose but it drives me bonkers a bit… Not a few words here and there… Im not from 1940s Germany… But full blown chats with roaring laughter as the 4 women and 2 men had for the half hour I spent near to them… Back of the room please, back of the room… Chat away there.. I moved away to a nice spot for 20 minutes to then have 4 drunken women arrive (who knew the songs but we load and lairy).. Now they were loud at a really quiet part of the show.. So they were being ”shushed” so they responded with loads and loads of loud ”shushing” of their own… Maybe i’m just a grumpy middle aged git… Enjoyed the gig despise my grumbling there…
SAVING GRACE with Robert Plant on vocals were just sweet.. The 75 minutes they were on stage just flew…  Could hear a pin drop… Beautifully played songs by the band.. American Roots stuff.. Songs going back to other centuries… Couple of Patty Griffin covers and a Low cover of ‘Everybody’s Song’, and sine serious kind and big words from Planty about Low the band… Saving Grace were fab, the banjo player brilliant and had the sweetest voice (maybe my highlight when he took the lead vocals)… Thats some going with Robert Plant on stage and the other lead vocalist exceptional as well.. Suzi Diann I think her name is… Plant kind of seductively skulked about the stage (mindful of his footing.. he is 70 isn’t he so he didn’t want a hopper) for a lot of the night… In great form it seemed to me in his plain black tee, black jeans and black boots… He oozed it… Just oozed it.. It begged a question… If Plant wasn’t on stage, then very arguably the music would have been just as good as the other 4 musicians were just top top class.. was it who he is or who he was that captivated everyone in the theatre, or was it because he has something special??.. Said it earlier.. He oozed it.. But more than backed up by four very capable and excellent musicians.. Top night out… Monday is the new Saturday…

Right so on to releases for the 2nd of August, Warner have the BAD COMPANY ‘Swan Song Years’ 6CD boxset on Rhino, JEFF TWEEDY ‘Warm / Warmer’ 21 track CD, NICK CAVE + WARREN ELLIS ‘The Road’ remastered and reissued LP on coloured vinyl, Skillet ‘Victorious’ new album on Roadrunner CD only for now, CARNIFEX new album ‘World War X’, and lastly from Warner for the 2nd of August is a live SAXON box set ‘The Eagle Has Landed’ as either 5LP or 3CD sets…

Tad quiet for the 2nd of August… Sony Music have nada out.. They are moving house or distribution to Cinram from Sony DADC who are shutting up shop soon enough… Another dagger for the physical industry… Cinram distribute PIAS and CARGO to us already.. A bit slower than Sony DADC but ok service I suppose.. They only ship out on Tuesday and Thursday so if you miss the Tuesday cut off of 11AM then it won’t ship till Thursday and if it misses a sailing then it’s Monday which is a week.. Sony DADC were never a week from the order day… So hopefully that doesn’t happen to often… That’s before Borisland and what that holds for all our futures.. A No Deal Brexit very very real now I feel and what shite that will bring to us all… We will have to wait and see…

PIAS for the 2nd of August have a new IDLES 7” single… Two new songs in fact, a brand new TY SEGALL ‘First Taste’ and the JASON ISBELL ‘Live at the Twist + Shout’ LP Release… Was out on coloured vinyl for RSD

Uni for the 2nd of August have a new VOLBEAT album “Rewind, Replay, Rebrand” on Jewel CD, 2CD Digi and Black 2LP as well as the soundtrack on vinyl to the 2001 smash hit film ‘Shrek’… Great soundtrack also.. It’s a first timer on vinyl.. Universal also have the debut album by Irish artist SIBEÁL and lastly CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL release “Live in Woodstock” as a limited 2LP or 1CD versions…

Last week I was rabbiting on about how the physical industry is trying to eat itself (more on it next week actually) well for now here’s a little example of one thing that goes on… Freddie Mercury’s estate released a 7” Picture Disc single and a CD single today of ‘Time Waits For No One’.. I tried to get some as I would have sold some (kinda my job) but they were only available on his website… Now as ye know Freddie is gone, so the estate (Mary is it?) just sell them on his website.. Absolutely, they can do that… Just cause I’m going to sell a few can’t and won’t change that… Tough tiddles Thomas.. They are 1000% entitled to do it but if we don’t get offered anything to sell, we’ll only be around as long as Cork in a hurling championship… I’ve three points…
1). We can’t control it and have no right to control it.. It’s purely tough tiddles Thomas…
2). I’d imagine the estate of Mr Mercury aren’t short a few bob or two, so why not let the shops have some..
3.) This is the most crucial one… It’s not sold out on his website… Folks idolise this man and his band (murky water Queen we will say) so fans not being able to get it isn’t right really… Do enough to give them to the shops.. But sure i’m bound to say that.. Will have to get on to my dentist about it.. If he gives me permission i’ve a great Freddie story..

I’m off for a little over a week folks, finishing next Thursday evening the 1st of August and not back until the 12th or 13th of August, so the Bob man and Shane man will have the reigns of duty… I’ll do half the newsletter next week and Bob will finish it and he’s flying solo the week after…

Last thing re THE MURDER CAPITAL in the Crane Lane… Strong likelihood this band will never again be found in a venue this size… Just saying is all… Links to new album below.. Pre-Order a product and gain entry to the Cork Album launch show on Thursday Aug 15th..

Sin é for this week folks…
We will all be glad of the break of the newsletters anyway won’t we!!

Cork sadly lost a bit of a record shop legend during the week with the passing of Richard Mealy. I only know Richard about 5 or 6 years to be honest but i always, always enjoyed our little dances over records…second hand records…you see Richard was a really good second hand records and second hand clothes operator up in Mother Jones Flea Market…he knew his shit, big time…and loved it too to be fair. So Rich would come in to see ‘Any new second hand Ray’…we had grown fond of one another at this stage and if i wasn’t too grumpy i’d say ‘there’s a box out the back Rich…have a look sure’…without fail he would pick the best 5 records out of a fairly bad pile and then we would do a dance over price….always fun, always good natured…he would leave with the 5 records and a smile…great exchanges though though to be fair…i’d slag him as he left by saying ‘you’ll sell them for double that above now i suppose’…he’d just laugh and say see you next week Ray. I will miss his visits to the shop…a good lad whom i was very fond of…shared a bit of time with him at the Microdisney gig back along and he was in and out of the shop until very recently…ah an awful loss to his family and close friends. I heard a nice story yesterday from another good lad who would visit both our establishments weekly… a friend of our lad was visiting him and he was hunting a record and our lad knew Richard had the record but it was a Monday and the Flea Market was closed …Our lad rang Rich and he came in and opened the stall and gave our mutual friends friend the record…no money…nah, youre grand, no money, it’s cool…fair play…Rich must have sold a load of mine over the weekend i’d say! Only messing kid…Rest in peace.

Universal for the 12th of July have the 20th anniversary edition of ‘Liquid Skin’ by GOMEZ  on Limited 2 CD or 2LP as well as some updated and expanded versions of PAUL MCCARTNEY albums ‘Paul is Live’ 2LP, ‘Choba b CCCP’ LP, ‘Amoeba gig’ 2 LP, ‘Wings over America’ 3 LP.

Uni have a CROWDED HOUSE 2LP ‘Best Of’, THE ROOTS ‘Tipping Point’  LP reissue, new album by K-Flag and Banks, some bluenote label releases also by CONNIE SMITH and Bobbi Humprey and a SQUARES and JOE SATRIANI release also:
‘Joe Satriani is one of the most respected and loved guitar players in the world. Despite known for his monstrous technique, he is the opposite of the stereotyped “shredder”. Satriani is in fact known for his unique melodic sense, his great rock sound rooted in the 70s and his soulful soloing.  After many years of great success as a solo artist, Satriani founded Chickenfoot together with ex Van Halen Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. Satriani about “Squares”: “In Berkeley, CA, back in the late ’70’s my then brother in law Neil Sheehan and I decided to start a band. It would be a power pop trio with me on guitar and Neil managing and writing lyrics. We sought out a drummer and a frontman/bassist, and in December of ’79 we found them playing on the local bay area scene. Our lead vocalist/bassist Andy Milton was from Cleveland, Ohio. He was 6ft. tall, good looking and had a voice like a modern day Elvis. Our drummer Jeff Campitelli was a local phenom who could groove like Charlie Watts but with a new ferocious energy that would help propel the band into the burgeoning New Wave music scene. We called ourselves “The Squares”. We were part Van Halen and part Everly Brothers. A mix of heavy metal, rock ‘n’ roll, punk and new wave. We were hard to pin down and categorize, which is most likely why we never “made it”! But as we were trying our best to get a record deal and become superstars we had a lot of good times, and we laid down some seriously good music. Ultimately, I left the band I started to pursue a solo career. What remains are the original early ’80’s demos. We’ve restored the original recordings, brought them into the digital world, and with loving hands and ears John has remixed the best of what we did in the studio. They sound better than ever. Turn it up and enjoy The Squares!”

Lastly, from Universal for the 12th of July is the VELVET UNDERGROUND – Complete Matrix tapes Limited 8 LP Box Set.

Also on the local scene aside from the boy Flannery, we have rising star JESS LEEN and her band playing instore for us next Saturday the 13th at 1pm for the second Saturday session in a row. Jess is from Douglas but is London based now…Talented lady…and she is bringing her band, which should be sweet…she is launching a new single ‘Compliments’ and here is a little link to it…

Come here hope to see some of ye over the weekend!!!

Sin é for this week so i suppose.
Go raibh maith agat as do chluas a thabhairt!!

BOWIE Bonanza, Mick’s Sixth, Join the Fangclub and a Launch in the Real Capital

Hi Everyone,

Hope all is well this week…6 months of the year gone…already…right so albums of the year…look before i start i just want to say that I wasn’t overly proud of the last few paragraphs of the newsletter last week…I was upset and it was badly written, tired attempt at trying to make a point…wasn’t gone on what I wrote but look i had a point i was trying to make but i think i failed…

On to the music, releases in the shop for this week we have the new release by KYLIE…some of ye will maybe be a bit surprised to hear that we had quite a bit of interest in this release…it’s available as a nice mint green indies only vinyl. We also have releases by THE BLACK KEYS…haven’t listened yet but all accounts it’s stripped back and rocking…drums, guitar and vocals…indies only vinyl due in on Friday, CD and Standard black vinyl here now. Parlophone have the BOWIE ‘Mercury Demos’ box set…we can all talk about price here i know…but the box does look sweeeet (ala little Petey)…i heard as in i heard now Bowieheads before ye revolt on me (i heard means it could be a rumour) anyway i heard that DUNCAN JONES was getting more control over the BOWIE stuff…well i’m waiting for the onslaught of info…is it true?? New BOWIE 7” picture disc out today also ‘DJ’.

Also out today…we have releases by GOVT MULE, MAX RICHTER, GENERATION AXE, IGGY POP, SPICE GIRLS as well as a couple of limited coloured and numbered ones from Music On Vinyl

ACCEPT ‘Metal Heart’, BAND OF BROTHERS ‘OST’, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN ‘Couldn’t Stand the Weather’, MINISTRY ‘Land of Rape and Honey’.

Right so, moving on to the 5th of July….we are delighted to have the new MICK FLANNERY LP and CD in the shop…it’s a fine fine album once again folks…i mean that…once again…6 albums in now and the output is astonishing high quality…really really well crafted songs one again and probably a more mature and accomplished record…i love it. Give Mick a go if you haven’t already is my advice.

We are involved with Mick and Coughlans for a few launch shows in Coughlans on Friday the 5th of July…pre-order the album with us if you want to get in.

Not many spots left now…Also delighted to have MICK instore on Saturday the 6th of July at 1 o clock to play a little set of songs from the new record so it would be great if you coud come along to that if around…right that’s Mick’s love in for this week done….here is a bit of a blurb about the record…

“A cliché has it that you have to beware of the quiet ones, because most of the time their voices speak sharper and with more range than the loudmouths. Every cliché, however, has a grain of truth in it, and so it’s fair to say that while County Cork singer-songwriter Mick Flannery is outwardly reserved, his songs are fluent in expressing layered aspects of the human condition, its flaws, triumphs, and general uncertainty, particularly evident in his new single out today (Friday 17th May), ‘Come Find Me’.

‘Come Find Me’, which will appear as track 3 on the upcoming album ‘Mick Flannery”, references emotional search and rescue. “The song is basically about someone who would like to find a partner but doesn’t quite know where to start. It looks at trying to stay positive about life, even in a city, where crowds of people can make someone feel even more alone,” explains Flannery.

The song is co-written with ESCQ, a song writing, and production duo based in Los Angeles, CA, where Mick recorded the track. He recounts: “When I arrived they already had a guitar riff ready for a verse to go on. I sang what they reckoned sounded like traditional Irish melody over the top, which they liked, so we went from there. The guys don’t have the same timidness when it comes to choruses being choruses, so they pushed this song to be as catchy as they could. Someday I’ll release the version we did, it’s much poppier than what I eventually recorded myself.”

An award-winning, double-platinum selling artist, Mick Flannery is on the brink of releasing not only his self-titled sixth album but also overseeing the worldwide premiere of the stage musical, Evening Train (so named after his 2007 debut album). He began to write songs as a teenager in his home of Blarney, County Cork. As musical influences from albums by the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, and Tom Waits seeped into his creative DNA, Mick absorbed, learned and honed the craft that would send him on his way into the world.

This self-titled release will be Mick’s sixth album – that is a sizeable back catalogue, a genuine body of work. As a mature songwriter, he reasons, he’s trying to hold on to what is essential to him, and resigning himself to the fact that the naïve, passionate, 20-something ‘Mick Flannery’ is gone. What comes next, he contends, is much more interesting and experienced. “You have a larger worldview and are more learned, each of which combine to create something new.”

Mick Flannery’s self-titled album is set for release on Friday 5th July 2019. The stage musical, Evening Train, premieres at The Everyman Theatre, Cork, 13th – 23rd June, 2019, as part of Cork Midsummer Festival.

Universal also have the ROLLING STONES ‘Rock n Roll Circus’ on a few formats Limited DVD/Blu Ray/2 CD …here’s more info on the release.

‘“You are about to be transported to another age: swinging London in the late sixties. The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is a time capsule. Two days in December 1968 that in many ways capture the spontaneity, aspirations and communal spirit of an entire era…for a brief moment it seemed that rock ‘n’ roll would inherit the earth.”

‘ABKCO/UMC will jointly release the 4K Dolby Vision restoration of the concert film The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus on Blu-ray for the first time ever on July 5th. The movie, shot over two days in December 1968, features The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, impromptu supergroup The Dirty Mac (John Lennon, Keith Richards, Mitch Mitchell, Eric Clapton), Yoko Ono in addition to the original lineup of The Rolling Stones. Filmed before a live audience at Intertel VTR Services Limited, a North London TV studio in 1968, Rock and Roll Circus was directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, originally conceived as a BBC TV special, but it never aired. It centres on the original line up of the Rolling Stones – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts (with Nicky Hopkins and Rocky Dijon) who serve as both the show’s hosts and featured attraction. The “World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band” is seen and heard performing six Stones classics-to-be: Jumping Jack Flash, Parachute Woman, No Expectations, You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Sympathy For The Devil and Salt of The Earth. The program also includes full length musical performances by The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithful, Yoko Ono. It also features ‘The Dirty Mac’, a group that was the first musical context in which John Lennon performed before an audience outside The Beatles. The Dirty Mac was Eric Clapton (lead guitar), The Rolling Stones’ own Keith Richards (bass) and Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience (drums) with Lennon on guitar and vocals. A mirthful conversation between Jagger and Lennon to introduce The Dirty Mac finds them referring to each other as “Winston” and “Michael” with Jagger affecting a convincingly flat American accent and Lennon referring to himself as “Winston Leg-Thigh.”

The Limited Deluxe Edition is a multi-format package of Blu-Ray, DVD, 2CD soundtrack, and a perfect-bound 44-page book with David Dalton’s original 1969 Rolling Stone essay, and photographs by Michael Randolf. The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus soundtrack has been expanded to 28 tracks, received a new mix and 192k 24 bit HD restoration. Bonus material included by the late concert pianist Julius Katchen, three additional songs by Taj Mahal and never before heard recordings of The Dirty Mac performing The Beatles classic, “Revolution” and the aptly titled track “Warmup Jam.” Also to be released for the first time on vinyl as a 3 LP package, and on a 2CD format.

Uni also have a soundtrack to the MICHAEL HUTCHENCE documentary ‘Mystify’ as well as DEEP PURPLE ‘Live in Newcastle’ from 2001…2k of these on red vinyl. Lastly Uni have reissues on LP of THIRD WORLD – 96 Degrees in the Shade and the B-52s self-titled album.

Divine Help, the Rory Blues, Feck off iTunes and the Boss…

Hi Everyone,

Hope all is well out there. Releases in the good siopa this week include the BOB DYLAN ‘Rolling Thunder 1975 Live Recordings’ 14 CD set or 3 LP set, new RICKIE LEE JONES, NEIL YOUNG Live album, 25th Anniversary of FLOYD’s ‘division bell’, RUSH Live, new ones also from SANTANA, MAX RICHTER, JAMIE CULLUM, AVICCI, THE DIVINE COMEDY which I am looking forward to…Mr Neil Hannon linked a fair few indie record shops on his social media or website to buy the record… fair play like…cos I have no bother a lad selling stuff from his own website and trying to cut out everyone – obviously if everyone does that, we may not have a business…but I think enough artists, musicians, labels realise that we give exposure and promote their records and that’s a small but important piece of the puzzle so it can work either way depending on artist or label…but spot on from Neil to send traffic and potential sales in the direction of record shops (we didn’t get any sales from it but still) a spot on thin to do…well as far as we are concerned anyway!

You win some, you lose some…lost one last week…a bit disappointed I was…and with no body in particular…just the game…I’m off on one here now and I haven’t even started the newsletter…Here goes

The Rory album released last week, which we done well with but we disappointed a load of faces with…there was a blue vinyl version pressed but it seemed to only be available via a major music online retailer…as far as i can gather it wasn’t available in any bricks and mortar store…so the record company and the online retailer done some exclusive deal on this and  I suppose we (as i’m sure all brick and mortar stores are) were fierce disappointed…we are Cork based…Rory was predominently Cork based and we had so many disappointed faces when we told them we could not supplythem with the blue vinyl…some walked away but most said erra I will take it off ye lads but easy to see the disappointment etched in their faces…not my guy’s fault, he asked for me to try and get some…the mechanics of the game caught me out this time…but a hard one to take, for all bricks and mortar, when exclusive online deals are being done, especially when it’s kind of with one of your own…as I said at the outset, you win some, you lose some…bravo Neil Hannon…not so bravo scenario two..

Also in today reissues by GENESIS, JAMES TAYLOR and we got our hands on a handful of each of those really limited RICHARD HAWLEY reissues on coloured vinyl…the first three records.

Right so, better start the newsletter…Releases for next Friday include THE BOSS…yep SPRINGSTEEN is back with a new record…i really like the two tunes i have heard…really like them…he is the BOSS after all and ‘Born in the USA’  was the first album I ever bought out of my own money and I wore the cassette out…yep it was a cassette…I bought it in Blackpool, England the summer of ‘85…I was 11 …the same holiday (only foreign one) Live Aid was on over there as well…so I bought the Springsteen tape over there and played it I reckon a couple thousand times…knew every word off by heart…still love it to this day…maybe not everyones fave but I love it still…can you remember the first thing you downloaded of iTunes…probably not or maybe you do…more on that later if time allows.

‘Western Stars’ is the name of Springsteen’s new album…it’s on CD , standard black vinyl and indies only coloured vinyl…here’s Tuscon train

Sony also have the vinyl release of the new PINK album ‘Hurts to Be Human’

Proper for the 14th of June have the new CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD album ‘Servants of the Sun’ on CD and LP.

Republic of Music have what I think could be a lovely album by CALEXICO and IRON AND WINE….a collaboration album between the two bands…I think SAM BEAM wrote all the songs whereas everyone chimed in with the music. ‘Years to Burn’ is available via City Slang records on CD, standard LP or Indies only coloured LP…I’m looking forward to this.

Music On Vinyl for the 14th of June have a reissue of TOM BAXTER’S ‘Feather and Stone’ album.

PIAS for the 14th of June have the new BILL CALLAHAN album on Drag City.

Universal for the 14th of June have the new MADONNA album ‘Madame X’ via Polydor. It’s available on 6 physical formats:

‘Madonna’s highly-anticipated 14th studio album Madame X will be released on June 14th. Influenced creatively by living in Lisbon, Portugal over the past several years, Madame X is a collection of 15 new songs that celebrate Madonna’s career-long affair with Latin music and culture as well as other global influences. Singing in Portuguese, Spanish and English, highlights on the album include “Medellín,” which was co-produced by Mirwais and captures the spirit of Maluma’s hometown, the anthemic song “I Rise,” the Jamaican dancehall vibes of “Future” featuring Quavo, and co-produced by Diplo, as well as the sonically innovative Mirwais produced “Dark Ballet.” Recorded over 18 months in Portugal, London, New York and Los Angeles, Madonna collaborated on Madame X with longtime producer Mirwais, as well as with producers Mike Dean and Diplo, among others.  The Deluxe 2CD comes in hardcover book with 32-page booklet and 2 bonus tracks. The LTD Rainbow Picture Disc is a double vinyl in clear bag with the deluxe tracklisting. The Box Set includes deluxe hardcover 2CD album, standard album cassette, 7” picture disc, poster & tattoo set. Also available on 2LP black vinyl, CD jewel case and MC.

Universal also have a ROGER DALTREY ‘Tommy’ reworking with a full orchestra, a new album from BASTILLE ‘Doom Days’ on CD, LP and Indies Only LP, a new album from KATE TEMPEST, TANGERINE DREAM Remastered CD Box Set, Carole King ‘Live at Montreaux’ 1973, BOB MARLEY and the Wailers ‘Legend’ 35th anniversary 2 LP edition…limited…

Last few things from Universal for the 14th June is the R.E.M. ‘In Time’ Best of 88-2003 2 LP release and a load of ABBA 7”s released also.

‘Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, ABBA’s Voulez-Vous will receive a multi-format reissue on 14 June. The album that saw the band say goodbye to the decade they dominated with style, Voulez-Vous was their fifth consecutive No.1 in Sweden, a chart-topper around Europe and a US Top 20 album. Powered by classic singles, including the title track, and ‘Chiquitita’, Voulez-Vous was at the heart of one of the groups most successful years to date.  Marking one of the longest gaps between new albums, Voulez-Vous was recorded across an entire year, with Benny and Björn refining their precision song writing, and Agnetha and Anni-Frid providing some of their finest vocals across a diverse set of songs that ranged from contemporary disco classics to ballads that explored Sweden’s rich musical past.

To celebrate the album’s original 23 April 1979 release, UMC will be releasing a number of anniversary reissues:  • A 2LP half-speed master on 180g vinyl, mastered at Abbey Road and cut at 45rpm. • A coloured-vinyl 7” singles box set, collecting the singles ‘Voulez-Vous’, ‘Summer Night City’, ‘I Have A Dream’, ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’, ‘Does Your Mother Know’, ‘Chiquitita’ and the extended dance mix of ‘Voulez-Vous’. • Each single released as a limited-edition standalone picture disc.

I mentioned last week the 25 years and the changes in that period in this game…one of the biggest changes in the game was ITUNES…and here we are today and its been wound up…bye bye…it sounds as if it gives me satisfaction and do you know what it probably feckin does…bye bye…cos there was a period of time when every third customer ( well not really a customer as it turned out) asked us for itunes vouchers…we used joke in the shop saying we need to get tee shirts done  saying we do not sell itunes vouchers…we sell physical stuff like!

I was younger and at that time a decade or so ago i was looking at my business going down the tubes so to see em gone and we still here is like, shit,  how did that happen….i certainly am not not counting chickens ( just yachts Ger you know!!) as we can never see too far down the tracks … that question by every third person for itunes vouchers  was only 6 or 7 years ago…now its bye bye…we certainly didn’t slay Goliath…a Swede by the name of Ek can take credit for that…but how the mighty have fallen…like they owned the industry there for a while ( like streaming does now i suppose) and now they are goneski…i never bought into in the shop didn’t…we never sold ipods or any mp3 players even though the numbers sold around the place in 2009 2010 and 2011 were only savage id say…now they are obsolete more or less…scary really…anyway our  new t shirts say “ yep, the vinyl is back” small print hopefully forever.

Warner for the 14th of june have the 40th anniversary limited ( nicely limited folks) of JOY DIVISIONs “ unknown pleasures” on red indies only vinyl via rhino…20 euro best price job if interested…cracker obviously…new NOEL GALLAGHER EP also out on coloured vinyl, new BARONESS album, new ZZ TOP best of, HANK WILLIAMS release only 300 of the triple LP pressed if i get a few, as well as some PRIMAL FEAR reissues on vinyl.

Lastly from Warner is THE MURDER CAPITAL new single “ green and blue” 12” indies only  single…now now lads if ye havent been on this crowd , its time to get listening here….second single…heres a link to it..

The first single “ feelings fades” was released about 2 months and we sent them around the world…i only had a hand full but they were goneski…we shipped copies all over the shop…a savage sign for an Irish band…Flood is on production on the album later in the year…this band could have a very bright future…the singer is Cork like as well as far as i know…cracking second single …cracking.

Right lastly so don’t forget we have CLARE SANDS in with us on SATURDAY as in tomorrow at 1 o clock for an instore to launch her new EP “ the basement sessions” …should be lovely, two on stage…if you around pop in and check it out sure…if you can’t make it and want a signed ep on CD, give us a shout and we can organise that for you…may even muster up a free itunes voucher with it!

Look, sin e for this week.

Hope to see some of ye saturday,

Go raibh maith agat as do cluas a thabairt,

Or be here at all.. 2044..  Where will the Music Biz be… My side of it??  Is clutter a thing of the past?.. Good clutter (i’ll say records) Bad clutter (half used tins of paint) .. Machines can play what we want by us telling them.. Voice activated music, voice activated hot water, cold water, lukewarm water.. We are I feel becoming a less cluttered society .. More sterile, healthier, fitter with less clutter… So where will all be in 25 years??  Disintegrating plates (saw some guy from the Guardian cut the shit out of The Cure Masterpiece during the week).. A Cloudbusting Newsletter with Mick Flannery, Our Boy Rory and Clare Sands In-store

Hi everyone,

Hope all is well…Releases in the good siopa this week include the sought after and exclusive KATE BUSH ‘Cloudbusting 12” Picture Disc’ the independent retailers only 45th Anniversary edition of BOWIE’S ‘Diamond Dogs’ , the new MORRISSEY covers album on ‘sky blue’ vinyl, RAMMSTEIN’s new one landed…I’m still hoping THE WATERBOYS will land for tomorrow Friday (the Orchard!!) …(it did!)

I am out of the shop today, Friday (tomorrow as I write this) but am here all day Saturday…bit of juggling going on at the moment….PRIMAL SCREAM ‘Singles’ is here, JOAN AS POLICEWOMAN ‘Live at the BBC’ is here, FLYING LOTUS new one is here…new records also by HAYDEN THORPE, WHENYOUNG…the new EP from INTERPOL is also with us…Reissues also by STEREOLAB, TEARS FOR FEARS, OSCAR PETERSON TRIO and the new release by DERVISH gets a release on vinyl.

Moving onto releases for next Friday the 31st of May…I suppose the big release down south here is the RORY GALLAGHER release ‘Blues’…Pre-order prices still available on the auld link above or bounce us back an email. Such a pity for Corkonians that Rory isn’t still mulching around the city, such a loss to the wider music community but sure life is full of ‘what ifs’.

“A collection of rare and unreleased recordings of Rory Gallagher playing strictly blues material. It will range from previously unheard /unreleased tracks from Rory’s archive, special guest sessions that with legendary blues artists (Muddy Waters / Albert King), lost radio

sessions and more. There will be a deluxe 36-track 3CD version covering Rory playing electric, acoustic and live blues comprised of 94%

unreleased material. Also coming is a 14-track 1CD / 2LP version of which 92% of the material will be unreleased.

‘The Blues’ follows in a similar vein to recent successful collections by The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

Rory Gallagher was one of the most consummate and electrifying guitarists of his generation. A glance at the testimonials below from

friends, contemporaries and followers testify to this: Johnny Marr “The man who changed my musical life was Rory Gallagher, I picked up

a guitar because of him.”

Universal also for the 31st of May have the release of THE POLICE ‘Everyone Stares’ on DVD or Blu Ray on Eaglerock. This is the astonishing home movies shot by Stewart Copeland charting the meteoric rise of the band…all pieced together here…meant to be a very intteresting and enjoyable watch.

Uni also have new album on CD + LP by DUFF MCKAGAN (ex GnR man) as well as CHASE AND STATUS.

PAUL MCCARTNEY has a limited coloured 3 LP version of ‘Egypt Station’ out on the 31st of May also.

Last couple from Universal for the 31st of May would be the reissues of DOVES first three albums, so reissued as numbered, coloured ltd edition 2 LP package…So we will have ‘Lost Souls’, the ‘Last Broadcast’ and ‘Some Cities’ with us next Friday.

Last one is a first timer on vinyl…transparent green vinyl in fact of THE LA’S ‘BBC Sessions’…

MICK FLANNERY has a new album coming out on Friday the 5th of July and we are delighted to be heavily involved around the release of the album ( self titled and on cd and LP) …the shop has a long association with Mick going back to the first album “ evening train” which was before Mick was record companyed up, we used buy that album direct from him ( or his mam and dad) back in the carrigaline days…maybe 12 or 13 years ago now id say and Mick has played quite a few in stores for us down through the years.

We shared a nice few whiskeys and guinness/beamish if memory serves, back before the launch of the red to blue album circa early 2012 when EMI had some industry “heads” invited to a secret gig in Charlies for Mick to showcase songs from the new record….he thought it didnt sound great…it sounded amazing…we were a bit like two lost souls as the “heads” sipped their G&Ts…so me, Mick and a lifelong friend of mine fell into each other’s  company and we shared a nice drink later that night as the “heads” continued with the G& Ts and continued talking more and more shite.

I like Mick….he strikes me as a really really genuine kid…but to the music…

This is Micks own release…Warner are helping with distribution and other things but its Micks baby, so we are trying to help as much as possible.

It’s our thing anyway, trying to support the local stuff ( as best we can anyway) and let’s be honest Mick is A list when it comes to local music, national music also….and in my personal opinion , i just think the lad is so so talented, i love what he does, i get it, it appeals to me…for me one of the best songwriters this country has seen if not, the best….. hugely underrated in my opinion in sectors…his previous five albums i still play regularly and i love them all…very very few in the history of recorded Irish artists would have a body of work that would stand up against Micks output…expect the true greats…i fully believe in years to come Mick could well be in that category.

He has a  chance ( through his talent) to make a really good living for himself, his family and a really nice side living for his band…he should try take it….( i think he has been to be fair)

Saw him in st Lukes there last weekend and he was just outstanding….9 on stage…drums, bass, electric, acoustic, piano, sax, trombone, violin and a backing singer…sonically it was amazing…vocally and musically…anyone who was there will vouch for it…he could do that show with half the band and make more johnny cash but its about the craft, its about the muse…its brilliant to see.

I have had the great pleasure of hearing the new record and i just think its fantastic….some brilliant songs, some of the trademark hushed beauties and some more contemporary sounding songs…quality thought provoking lyrics as you always get ( amazing that that is the case) …big wall of sound going on at times, great production, vocally on point at all times ,cracking melodies the whole way through…..its an absolute gem of an album and i will be pulling it out and playing it in 20 years time…..that’s what great art gives you…something forever.. in this immediate world.

Right, id say ye get we are fairly passionate about this release  so here’s the bit about it…

We are involved with Mick and  the good good skins of Coughlan’s Live on Douglas Street as they host two album launch shows on friday the 5th of July ( the day the album comes out) …one show is at 5 pm and the second one is at 7 pm…entry to the show is simply buy the album from our website…must be from the website please as we need to track them….that’s it really i suppose…..we will have your name on the door then…..go buy it!!

The link to it is  here

Click collect in store if your about the place to save a few quid on the shipping….be an excuse to hook up also for a few jars…we can also bill it as the music zone christmas party!!

limited capacity is the only thing…sure buy it anyway even if you cant make it in!!

Look thats the sceal with it….the launch shows in Coughlans are a three piece…Mick is doing an instore in the shop the following day sat the 6th of July at 1 o’clock also.

The album is an absolute cracker…here’s the latest single…

Loads more where this came from..could be the best 20 quid you spend all year.

Hope to see ye on the 5th or the 6th…sound!!

Above was meant to be the midweek special i promised….i never got it written!!

Sony for the 31st of May have the next two in the DEPECHE MODE 12” singles boxsets….this time we have BLACK CELEBRATION with 5 12” s in its set….we can 100 euro best price job on it ( i know im always banging on with best price jobs and caps and all that malarkey and i suppose it is an ad, this newsletter malarkey that is…maybe too much so…but look i fight for some of these best price jobs to try and give as good a price as i can….i apologise for shaking the box in front of ye to often……im sure ye see it for what it is…no interest…drift over it …interested….great)

The big one from Warner for the 31st is the new RICHARD HAWLEY album “ FURTHER” on CD, LP or INDIES only orange LP and they also have THE STREETS reissue of “ everything is borrowed” as well as a new album by VADER.

Lastly from Warner is a VENOM compilation as a 2 cd or a 2 lp job…or a 9 lp boxset…its called in nomine satanas.

On the local scene, we have a good in-store gig coming up….CLARE SANDS will be releasing her new EP, ‘The Basement Sessions’ on Saturday the 8th of June at 1pm. Talented girl, well worth a look.

Described by RTÉ Lyric FM as an ‘exceptional talent’, and Hot Press as ‘a passionate and alluring unique force in Irish music’, Clare Sands is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and songwriter hailing from the vibrant musical city of Cork. ‘She is the most eclectic performer on the Irish scene to date’ – RTE Radio 1.

Gracing a fender strat guitar in one hand and electric violin in the other, Sands, a Boss/Roland and Yamaha endorsed artist, has a unique ability to to create eclectic, energetic, heartfelt, soulful music with an Irish traditional twist.

Having played her biggest show to date last summer, Liverpool’s Feis alongside Irish legends Imelda May and Shane McGowan to 15,000 people, Sands has been touring around the world since a young age, both as a solo artist and accomplished violinist/guitarist with Jack L, Hothouse Flowers, SON, Luka Bloom, Mundy, and other highly acclaimed artists, performing sold-out dates at the INEC, Cork Opera House, Electric Picnic, and The National Concert Hall, to name a few.

Along her musical path, Sands met legendary guitarist and producer, Jimmy Smyth (Van Morrison, Mary Coughlan, Chaka Khan) and released ‘Dance x3!’  It was met with critical acclaim; holding position at No 1 in the Irish Airplay Charts for over two months, it received excellent reviews by BBC, RTE, The Irish Times – it’s ‘a celebration of groove and Motown songcraft’ – Nialler 9

Sands is currently gearing up to release her live EP ‘The Basement Sessions’ due out June 13th 2019, recorded live in her Cork City basement due out this summer. The first three tracks and accompanying live videos from the record have received widespread recognition, with 40,000 views, national & international airplay, and phenomenal press reviews ‘magical & moving, powerful yet delicate, ephemeral & ethereal, yet durable’ – The Irish Times.

Warner for the 17th of May have the next in the series of the BOWIE 40th Anniversary Picture Disc 7”s, this time it’s “Boy’s Keep Swinging” from the Lodger album..

Warner also have BOWIE’s “Clareville Grove Demos” 3×7” vinyl box..

Following on from Spying Through A Keyhole, in early 1969 at his flat in Clareville Grove, London, David Bowie with John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson continued to demo ‘Space Oddity’ and other tracks.
This live demo tape session is set for release as a 7″ vinyl singles box set of six home demos, four of which are previously unreleased recordings, Clareville Grove Demos will be released on 17th May 2019.
As with the Spying Through A Keyhole vinyl singles box set, the design of each single label is presented to reflect the way David sent many of his demos to publishers and record companies, featuring his own handwritten song titles on EMIDISC acetate labels with cover and print photos by David’s then manager Ken Pitt taken in the Clareville Grove flat. The singles themselves are all mono and play at 45 r.p.m.
Due to the nature of some of the solo home demos where Bowie accompanied himself on acoustic guitar, the recording quality isn’t always of a usual studio fidelity. This is partly due to David’s enthusiastic strumming hitting the red on a couple of the tracks, along with the limitations of the original recording equipment and tape degradation. However, the historical importance of these songs and the fact that the selections are from an archive of tracks cleared for release by Bowie, overrides this shortcoming.

Warner also for the 17th of May have the new album by THE HEAVY on BMG, the album is called “Sons” and there is an indies only exclusive LP with a bonus 7″.. We can do best price job at €22 on this… And lastly there is a new BRAD MEHLDAU on CD and LP

Warner also have a very limited KATE BUSH 12” Picture Disc coming up on the 24th of May… 4 Tracks… We have one order only on this title, it is for RSD Stores only.. Best price job on pre-orders of €23.. They won’t last long i’d say..

KATE BUSH – “CLOUDBURSTING” 12” PICTURE DISC. RECORD STORE DAY STORES EXCLUSIVE RELEASE. 4 track picture disc single from the rarities release ‘The Other Sides’

 Side One:
Cloudbusting 12” mix

Warm and Soothing

MOV for the 17th of May have two nice releases… LYNYRD SKYNYRD “Collected” comes out on 3LP Coloured vinyl, and there is a reissue of PRISCILLA : QUEEN OF THE DESERT SOUNDTRACK, again on coloured vinyl..

Here’s THE PALE single that I promised from last week.. Cracking album, jumps between genres and styles with some fine lyrics

Some football during the week wasn’t there… Unbelievable stuff and some serious stuff starts Sunday on the hurling fields also.. Champions league semi finals and championship hurling.. Summer’s here!! The shop turned 18 years last Wednesday and it’s still vivid, I was only a pup really… Leeds were in the Champions League semi final at the time with David O Leary’s team of young pups.. Bridget Jone’s Diary OST was top of the charts… Sony Cat was delayed and first potential customer was looking for AC/DC CDs, none in stock.. Schoolboy error by a schoolboy.. Actually not my fault, stock was delayed.. I’m still telling the same auld yarns (probably be saying it tomorrow with the new Whitesnake album courtesy of my new pals in The Orchard.. again).. But I could have cried to be honest.. Thought i might never see a customer ever again.. Finished that Tuesday the 8th of May, the day after the bank holiday with 606 Punts in the till.. This yacht might float after all.. We wouldn’t do it now to be honest on a Tuesday (or rarely do anyway), but we are still floating… Anyway

Sin é for this week,
Go raibh maith agat as do chluas a thabhairt.
