With their heavenly vocal harmonies and on-off member Neil Young, Crosby, Stills And Nash epitomised the folk-rock sound that drifted into Los Angeles from the Hollywood Hills in the late 60s and early 70s. A supergroup comprised of former members of The Byrds (David Crosby), The Hollies (Graham Nash) and Buffalo Springfield (Stephen Stills and Neil Young), CSNY’s set at the 1969 Woodstock Festival was only their second public performance, but, as evidenced by the recordings of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Marrakesh Express that provide highlights of The Early Broadcasts 1969-1971, they had already honed their signature sound. Across this collection of festival and TV appearances, the group deliver furious Neil Young-penned protest anthems (Ohio) and gentle existential meditations (Find The Cost Of Freedom) – music that not only speaks to a generation of countercultural rebels at the turn of the decade, but which continues to resonate with the freedom fighters of today.
