Black Water Rising is the debut solo album by uilleann piper, singer and artist Anthony Ruby. Ruby’s creation has definitely been a labour of love considering it has been four years in the making. Ruby plays a range of instruments on the album with the uilleann pipes, whistles and vocals to the fore. This album presents the traditional art of Irish uilleann piping with newly composed songs by Ruby. The album combines traditional and non-traditional instrumentation in an innovative way whilst also employing some elements of experimental sound design. Ruby has also given the album cover a strikingly visual identity with his cover painting ‘Drift.’
The musicians who played on the album are as follows:
Anthony Ruby plays uilleann pipes, whistles and sings vocals. He also plays keyboards, drums/percussion, accordion, bodhrán, jaw harp and
has also contributed field recordings.
Cárthach Ó Nuanáin plays complementary guitar, bouzouki and keyboard accompaniment. He also plays some organ, concertina and has
added some field recordings to the album.
Eoin Jordan plays pulsing bouzouki, bodhrán and also adds some backing vocals.
Ilse de Ziah has played the Cello beautifully on two songs on the album.
Colm Ó Nuanáin plays a soaring trumpet on one track.
Joe Ó Nuanáin on fiddle joins Anthony on a set of lively polkas.
Tim O’Leary plays a rich double bass on two songs.
