Entranced by Trinity’s hit ‘Three Piece Suit’, they wrote a ‘reply’ song – Uptown Top Ranking, which they cut for Joe Gibbs. The success of the single, both in Jamaica and globally, secured them a deal with Virgin Record’s Front Line imprint, releasing this, their only album, in 1978. The album features the cream of Jamaica’s reggae musicians – ‘The Riddim Twins’ (Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare) gives the music the fat rhythms, while the legendary group of players, The Revolutionaries – the sublime horn section of Tommy McCook, Vin Gordon, and Herman Marquis; guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith and keyboard player Bernard Harvey, provide the icing on the cake. The package includes sleeve notes by Reggae expert Steve Barrow, author of The Rough Guide To Reggae.Originally released in June 1996 on the short-lived Island Jamaica Jazz imprint, ‘Below The Bassline’ was the Jamaican guitarist’s nineteenth solo album – his first ‘Wranglin” was released by Chris Blackwell’s Island Records in 1964. It was recorded in New York with a stellar cast of guest musicians, including Ernest’s Skatalites bandmate saxophonist Roland Alphonso, bass player Ira Coleman (Herbie Hancock, Bradford Marsalis, Pharoah Sanders), drummer Idris Muhammad (George Benson, Lou Donaldson, Grant Green) and pianist Monty Alexander (Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie). ‘Below The Bassline’ is a testament to the skill of the legendary Ernest Ranglin and the other musicians featured here.Original copies of the 1996 black vinyl LP now sell for upwards of £400, while a limited reissue in Japan in 2021 is already attracting three figure prices. Born in Manchester, Jamaica in 1932 Ernest was a pioneer of the early ’60s Ska movement, his percussive and rhythmic guitar sound becoming a defining feature of that genre, as heard on recordings by Prince Buster, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley and The Skatalites. Ernest’s relationship with Island Records dates back to 1962, when he was among the musicians employed to add an ‘authentic’ Jamaican flavour to the first James Bond film Dr. No. Island Records founder Chris Blackwell was employed as a location scout for the film. In 1963 Ernest arranged and played guitar on ‘My Boy Lollipop’ by Millie Small (UK No. 2, May 1964), the first big international Ska / Reggae hit and for many British music fans, their first exposure to this ‘exotic’ genre. Such was his versatility, in 1964 he was hired by Ronnie Scott to join his band at his famous Jazz Club in London; readers of Melody Maker voted Ernest ‘best guitarist’ in that paper’s 1964 Reader’s Jazz Poll.Future projects saw him work with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Ken Boothe, The Congos and John Holt. Pressed on two limited edition burnt red vinyl, the original album is accompanied by a second LP of previously unreleased ‘The Evolution Demos’, mastered and cut by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios. In line with previous editions, this expanded reissue is packaged in a striking, metallic-printed, gatefold sleeve, within an O-Card. The 4 page insert contains lyrics and brand new liner notes written by Frank, reflecting on the album and his journey over the last 10 years. Newly mastered for 180 gm vinyl at Abbey Road Studios, the original CD album has been completely reevaluated by Marc himself to bring fans this new ‘Artist’s Cut’ over this deluxe 2LP version. Despite delivering some of the best-loved Marc Almond songs of the era – ‘Adored & Explored’, ‘The Idol’ and ‘Come In Sweet Assasin’and ‘We Need Jealousy’, for example – ‘Fantastic Star’ had a long and sometimes troubled gestation with recording sessions spanning two record companies and four big-name producers –original Soft Cell / Bronski Beat producer Mike Thorne, the legendary Cure / Banshees / Beautiful South collaborator Mike Hedges, house pioneers The Beatmasters and The Human League / Heaven 17’s Martyn Ware all made sonic contributions. The resulting album was a thrilling, sonically varied ride through all the genres Marc had already made his own – from grimy guitar-based rock ‘n roll to beautifully orchestrated ballads, and from cutting-edge electronica to out-and-out pop music.For this long-overdue vinyl release Marc has revisited the original running order and looked again at some of the tracks from the sessions that didn’t make the album but later appeared as singles B-sides. Making his own cuts, Marc has removed two songs from the CD format – the long version of ‘The Idol’ in favour of the punchier single version as well as ‘Shining Brightly’ which he feels never really belonged on ‘Fantastic Star’. | Mike Oldfield | OPUS ONE | UMR | LP | To celebrate Record Store Day in 2022, Universal Music Recordings are delighted to release Opus One, the original demo recorded by Mike Oldfield that was later to become the global phenomenon, Tubular Bells. Conceptualised in downtime while working as the bass player in the cult group Kevin Ayers And The Whole World, the teenage Mike Oldfield recorded his music in a small flat in Tottenham and a bedroom in his parents’ home in Harold Wood, Essex. Working with a tape recorder borrowed from Ayers, Oldfield created tape loops and worked with such advanced studio items as a screwdriver and a piece of card to get the multi-tracking he desired. This was the tape that was rejected by many record companies, and ultimately approved by Simon Draper and Richard Branson at Virgin Records. Re-recorded at The Manor Studio, with additional sections added, Tubular Bells was released on May 25th 1973, launching both Mike Oldfield’s career and Virgin Records. The rest, as they say . . . Unreleased until 2009, Opus One was made available on the 35th Anniversary box set of Tubular Bells. The introduction of legendary producer Jimmy Miller refocused the band with enthralling results. A strong acoustic Delta blues flavour colours much of the material, particularly Prodigal Son and Jagger & Richards’ No Expectations. | Siouxsie & the Banshees | A Kiss In The Dreamhouse | UMR | 1LP (coloured) Half speed | As part of Record Store Day 2023 Universal Music Recordings are releasing the fifth Siouxsie and the Banshees studio album – A Kiss In The Dreamhouse pressed on 180g clear and gold marbled vinyl, mastered and cut half speed vinyl at Abbey Road Studios. This unique edition’s artwork has been overseen by Siouxsie and Severin and boasts updated features and additional elements to celebrate forty years of this compelling, luminescent and influential recording. Their 1981 LP ‘Juju’ had started a new era of the Siouxsie and the Banshees and after an extensive year of touring and the release of a non LP single “Fireworks” they entered Camden’s Playground Studios to record their new album with a now tried and fully tested line up. The resulting ‘A Kiss In The Dreamhouse’ was released on 5th of November 1982. Pre-dating the subject matter of 1997’s ‘L.A Confidential’, the title ‘A Kiss in the Dreamhouse’ refers to a notorious Hollywood lookalike brothel. Siouxsie described their self produced album at the time as “Opiated visions, sonic pyramids, all seeing eyes, dreamlike soundscapes” their love of psychedelia now given centre stage as strings play backwards on ‘Circle’, the music shimmers through ‘Cascade’ and ‘Painted Bird’ and haunts on “Obsession” all capped off by ‘Slowdive’ a closing track of experimental sleaze tinted with violins, cellos and catchy melodic hooks. The album received unanimous praise on its release. NME’s Richard Cook considered it innovative: “A Kiss in the Dreamhouse is a feat of imagination scarcely ever recorded. It’s breath-taking. Somehow, a bold assurance of intention has met with a hunger for experimenting with sound to expand an already formidable group of songs into pure, open-minded ambiguity. The flesh of the song will balloon out or contort into unimaginable patterns; indecipherable echoes volley between the walls of the recording; glassy, splintered tones pierce the luxuriant sheen of the mix. Repeated listens trick the sense of balance; tremendous risks are taken. “I promise. This music will take your breath away”. Another journalist of the NME Paul Du Noyer wrote that A Kiss in the Dreamhouse was “a real departure from rock tradition” and “maybe even their best.” 1982 A Kiss In The Dreamhouse – Siouxsie and the Banshees were Siouxsie Sioux on vocals, Steven Severin on Bass Guitar, John McGeoch on Guitar and Keys, Budgie on Drums. Although forming on a punky whim in 1976 the Banshees remain one of the most influential and enigmatic bands of our time, worlds apart from their contemporaries and a cut above the rest. | Slits, The | Rough Cut | UMR | 1LP | Popularly regarded as one of the most important and groundbreaking British albums of all time, 1979’s ‘Cut’, by The Slits has, rightly, seen several reissues on the LP format over the years. Its stature as a classic seems to have only grown since its initial impact and its influence on what came after remains incalculable – from Riot Grrrl to Culture Club, from Massive Attack and Tricky to Hole and Nirvana (Kurt Cobain cited ‘Typical Girls’ as one of his favourite recordings ever) it’s impossible to underestimate its influence on leftfield outsider musicians to this day. For Record Store Day 2023 it’s a first outing on vinyl for pioneering producer Dennis Bovell’s ‘Rough Mixes’* of the album, previously unearthed as part of the research for 2009’s anniversary CD Deluxe Edition of the album. As a standalone vinyl piece ‘Rough Cut’, then, presents an entire alternative version of ‘Cut’, plus the addition of the band’s startling cover of ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’. It also shines a light on Bovell’s superb initial mixes which pack a raw power and punch to rival the final, finessed versions ultimately released as ‘Cut’. Arguably, these mixes could have ended up being the “official” versions and ‘Cut’ would still be able to claim its place alongside PiL’s ‘Metal Box’, and Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ as 1979’s most groundbreaking albums. What they demonstrate are a band and their producer pouring myriad musical influences in search of an entirely new musical language. For this incarnation of ‘Cut’ Slits guitarist Viv Albertine advised on a new alternate treatment for the sleeve and, for the inner bang’s sleeve notes, has donated a new Q&A essay reflecting on the album’s recording, The Slits’ uncompromising musical ethos, and their place in history as post-punk’s premiere female musical revolutionaries. ‘Rough Cut’ makes for both a fascinating listen and a fascinating read. *Note: as no Rough Mix of ‘Soend, Spend, Spend’ exists in the Island Records archive, ‘Rough Cut’ instead places the band’s original 8-track demo instead. ‘Rough Cut’ LP Tracklisting Side A A1.
