Hi everyone,
Hope ye’r all well…
Christ just nearly choked on my tea as I watched the 9 o’clock news.. DJT and our boy Enda doing a cringe and reflux inducing tag team…. Just kept my tea down actually.. Especially when the VP greets a business breakfast with a heartily mocking ‘top of the morning to ye’ in his best leprechaun accent…. What a bunch of muppets.
Anyway, releases in the corporation this week include new ones from DEPECHE MODE, REAL ESTATE, SPOON, FAIRPORT CONVENTION, JARVIS COCKER and ANOHNI…. As well as vinyl record reissues by DEAD CAN DANCE, COUNTING CROWS, PETE TOWNSEND and STEVE WINWOOD.
Record Shop Day is not far away now folks… Saturday April 22nd @ 8 AM is when the show begins..
We have a lot of really good customers, and RSD can be a tricky situation…. Basically we are not going to please everyone (but we will try to) … We are not sure what quantities we will receive (but we will get quite a lot)…. The only and best piece of advice we can give is arrive early on Saturday Morning, April 22 (there will be a lovely atmosphere worst case!!….)
I understand folks can be on holidays and be under pressure with work but first come first serve are the RSD rules and the fairest way to do it also….
We will send out some lists soon and if you fancy something drop us a mail and let us know and at least we will make sure it’s ordered …. The likelihood then is it will be in the shop on the morning of the 22nd… Lap of the gods after that then i’m afraid… Early birds and worms type of story… I hope ye guys understand.
There will be a few lists go out fairly soon folks…
(Apologies for picture of old shop, the sign will be back up in the new shop soon!)
Anyway, moving on to releases for next Friday the 24th of March.
WARNER
Firstly from Warner we have the return of the Reid brothers… THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN are back with a new record called ‘Damage and Joy’ (bit like their relationship)… There is a limited indies only vinyl record on this one… Standard vinyl also and CD…
Warner also have the breakouts from the PINK FLOYD Bluray / DVD Boxset that was released around Christmas, new albums from JAMES BLUNT, FORMATION, some reissues from ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, and DROPKICK MURPHYS and a new 7” single from BLONDIE…
UNIVERSAL
Universal for the 24th of March have he reissue of PAUL MCCARTNEY’s ‘Flowers in the Dirt’ on 2CD or Limited 2LP.. Also an expensive 3CD/DVD… 160 quid… Here are the notes on the set :
One of the most critically acclaimed albums of the eighties, nominated for both BRIT and Grammy Awards, Flowers In The Dirt saw McCartney team up with Elvis Costello to co-write a third of the album (My Brave Face, You Want Her Too, Don’t Be Careless Love and That Day is Done) as well as boasting production credits from producers such as Mitchell Froom, Trevor Horn, David Foster, Steve Lipson, Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney himself. Pink Floyd guitar legend David Gilmour makes an appearance on We Got Married and George Martin’s string arrangement on Put It There is amongst the many album highlights.
Formats include a deluxe boxset which contains previously unreleased demos, unseen archival video, notebook of Paul’s handwritten lyrics and notes, Linda McCartney Flowers In The Dirt exhibition catalogue, 112-page hardcover book documenting the making of album and more.
Universal also have the new TAKE THAT album ‘Wonderland’ on CD or Deluxe CD. LP to follow in April.. Lastly from Uni are JETHRO TULL’s ‘The String Quartets’ CD or 2LP…. Tull classics with a full string orchestra.
Republic of Music have the KELLY LEE OWENS debut electronic/dance album on CD or Indies only clear vinyl record…
CARGO

SONY
Sony have STEVE HACKETT’s new solo album called ‘The Night Siren’ by the Genesis guitarist…
PIAS
Pias for the 24th have a new album by SOULWAX called from ‘Deewee’…. LP version not out till June.
As I am getting more into this newsletter I kind of wish I rabbited on about RSD for a bit longer as next week isn’t exactly overflowing with releases… Writer’s block…
PROPER
Proper for next week have the 4th album by STEEL PANTHER ‘Lower the Bar’ on CD, Deluxe CD or LP.
Proper also have the deluxe version of the newest KRISTIN HERSH album.
On the local front MARLENE ENRIGHT’S debut solo album ‘Placemats and Second Cuts’ is out next Friday the 24th and it’s a lovely listen… Backed up by a really talented band… It’s a very impressive set of songs… Marlene will be instore performing tracks from the record next Saturday the 25th at 1PM if you are around… We would all really appreciate support for this homegrown talent…. Here’s a taster of what’s instore (like the word play lads ‘instore’.. ‘in store’…)
Speaking of the local music scene there is a brilliant festival being run by the Cork Opera House the last weekend in April… It is called RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW (not a Fat Boy Sim tribute band) and it showcases the depth and best of Cork talent… More about it in weeks to come or check out more info here..

RED ESSENTIAL have the new album by SAMANTHA CRAIN out next Friday the 24th also…. Indies only coloured vinyl with this one.. Ithink Samantha is playing Coughlans in April which would be a nice one i’d say… Iread somewhere where she spent the winter just gone working in a pizzeria and not really living to allow her to save to come over to Europe and tour her record… Another talented lass…
I received a photograph today from a good friend of mine who worked in GOLDEN DISCS with me back in the day… The photo was taken at Christmas 1994 and I was delighted to get it…. Weird the way things can appear from seemingly thin air…. The reason i’m showing it is not to talk about all the modelling and acting jobs I refused around the time but it captured a moment in time in the music retail business when I was only starting out… Look at all the cassette tapes, cassette tape cleaners….I showed it to 5 or 6 fellas today and they got a great giggle out of it… I’m going to leave myself open for an awful feed of abuse i’d say… Couldn’t care less… Woody from Toy Story one fella said as he quipped about a string up my ass…. But look at the tapes… Crikey how things have changed… that photograph was taken in GD Pana just a couple of doors up from Cudmore’s sweet shop on the corner of Patrick and Winthrop street ….. It kind of knocked me for six today to be honest….My whole adult life have been spent working in record shops…. Plus i seem to be getting old!!!
Hope you get a giggle…throw the abuse my way.. I love it
Sin é for this week so folks,
Thanks for listening,
Ray (Cork’s Next Top Model 1994)
