A couple of my own favs next, with the new PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING album “ bright magic” which is an album based on the city Berlin.

Inspired by the Rory McLean book ‘Berlin: Imagine A City’ and named after a

collection of short stories by Alfred Döblin, the record celebrates one of the

greatest cultural capitals of the world, Berlin.  Written and recorded entirely at Hansa Studios in Berlin, the album is split

into three parts – Building A City / Building A Myth / Bright Magic – and Side

B of the album is a homage to Side B of David Bowie’s ‘Low’. Side A of the

record includes the singles ‘People, Let’s Dance’ and ‘Blue Heaven’.

Hansa is world renowned as the studio responsible for classic albums

including ‘Low’ and ‘Heroes’ by David Bowie, ‘The Idiot‘ and ‘Lust For Life’ by

Iggy Pop and Depeche Mode’s third, fourth and fifth albums ‘Construction

Time Again’, ‘Some Great Reward’ and ‘Black Celebration’.

There is a deluxe boxset of the PSB album as well as cd. Lp and indies only lp….got me ticket for them in cypress avenue in jan, only 30 quid.

The last one of note from INTEGRAL for the 24th of sept is the SUFJAN STEVENS/Angelo De Augustine collab album …a beginners mind is their debut album and contains 14 songs loosely based on films….indies lp available here also as CD and std lp….ye knows my thoughts on Sufjan.

Uni for the 17th sept have a limited 4lp set by Genesis ( 80 quid) as well as a 2 cd job…” the last domino” collection type thing , UNI have THE LATHUMS album on cd and indies only lp, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is 50 years old and there is a reissue, there is a new CARLY PEARCE CD, a new EMPLOYED TO SERVE album on Spinefarm, there are a couple of tonepoet bluenote reissues Lee Konitz & Gerry Mulligan as well as WAYNE SHORTERs the  all seeing eye…lastly the SOUND OF MUSIC vinyl reissue and a well priced 28 CD CHOPIN BOXSET.

I would normally hand to Bob…there were announcements but i didnt get to a lot of them….a new DIVINE COMEDY album though…sweet… and the biggie which we did get to is the 50th anniversary edition of LET IT BE by some crowd called THE BEATLES ( its time to play the music, its time to light the lights)

Sin e for me for sure for this week

It aint pretty but heh its here…

Thanks for listening as always

Villagers ‘Fever Dreams’ Is Nearly Here, Our Niamh Regan In-Store On Friday 2

Hi everyone,
Hope all is well folks.. This is my last newsletter for a few weeks.. I have a little bit of time off.. So my last day in the shop is this Saturday the 31st of July.. We are open Sunday the 1st of August 11-4 as usual, but closed on the Bank Holiday Monday.. I’m working from home doing the orders that day but i’m off then from Tuesday the 2nd of August until Friday the 13th of August… So really looking forward to the time off… It’s been 12 months since I took some time and although I love what I do, I really feel I need a break from it… Bobby and Shane will take the reigns.. Thanks lads!!! Get them on email at shop@musiczone.ie or on the phone at 021-4967119.. They will cover all comms when i’m gone including the newsletter.. Communication is a busy part of our world and something we have to stay on top of every few hours.. A lot of it can be fruitless but we have to stay with it.. Cause it’s important to hopefully bring someone back a second time which may bare fruit… There are circa 200 communications on email a day… Glorified secretaries we are!! But crucial.. No emails no business.. So Bob will do newsletters for the next 2 weeks and may even turn into a ‘Grumpy Ray’ for that 10 days or so!!

Just about our email… shop@musiczone.ie is a good one to use, or raymusiczone@gmail.com but not the old musiczone@eircom.net… That one is a gone.. Won’t get to us with eircom.net…

Right so few other bits of house keeping stuff.. We still have a handful of spots left for NIAMH REGAN‘s in-store with us this Friday the 30th at 4PM… We are so looking forward to this here in the shop.. Honoured to welcome Niamh to our humble abode.. ‘Hemet‘ is a super record and Niamh will be singing songs from it here on Friday at 4 and hopefully signing a few copies also.. If you can’t get in and want a signed copy please email and we will sort it.. 5 Spots / Households left for this socially distanced in-store… We would love to see ye.. Here is ‘Save the Day’ from the album

Another fierce interesting release (which I forgot about until now) is a debut release on Skinty Records.. It’s a Trad compilation called ‘Goitse A Thaisce : A Compilation Of Irish Music Volume 1’. The label was founded by Tom Coll (drummer with Fontaines D.C.).. These are a collection of Traditional Irish Songs that mean a lot to Tom.. Tom and his bandmates have always been friendly and kind to the siopa here.. There record is limited to 1000 copies and pressed on 180gm Vinyl.. Here is a few words from Tom on the record. It is out on the 6th of August.. Give us a nod please if you would like a copy..

The idea for this record came from an extended period of time living back in my family home in
the west of Ireland. Here, I found myself in the midst of a vast, mountainous landscape, a place
that vividly recalled my childhood memories of old Irish traditional music. This experience
sparked a need to immerse myself in the tradition once again. Trad was my first musical love
over any other, so it feels very gratifying to put together this compilation.
Every tune on this record holds a special place in my heart. Whether it’s by lifelong heroes such
as The Bothy Band or Planxty, family friends like Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh or Emer Mayock, or by
contemporary artists pushing the boundaries of the tradition like Lisa O’Neill or Ye Vagabonds,
these songs have soundtracked my life thus far.
If this record can introduce just one person to the world of Irish music, then it has served its
purpose. The tradition has so much depth and richness to it, and I urge you to please delve into
it with an open heart. The title of the record roughly translates to “come here my darling,” which
is the sentiment I feel when I hear these tunes. Hopefully they can bring about that same feeling
for you.
Tom Coll – Skinty Records / Fontaines DC

I am going to hand over to Bobby now to run through announcements etc..

Hey folks,
Hope everyone is keeping safe and well.
Not a huge pile from myself this week so will try keep it short and sweet!
Kicking us off this week is a biggy. 50 years since one of our own legends released his first solo record following the break up of Taste. That is of course the excellent self titled album by Cork’s own RORY GALLAGHER. One of my own favourite records, and what I think is one of the best album covers ever. Just pure simple, but effective. There is a few formats for this 50th Anniversary Edition, including a 2CD3LP or Deluxe Limited 4CD/DVD set. Lots of unreleased takes, live material etc with the extras.

We have a game of Fastest Fingers First unfortunately again this week. This time it’s a 5LP Coloured Vinyl Boxset release from the excellent SUFJAN STEVENS. ‘Convocations‘ is the title of the release, which was put out first in May 2021 (first time release on vinyl here). It’s an instrumental album made up of 5 different volumes, recorded during lockdown and it explores the the grief Stevens’ felt following his father’s death. Unfortunately folks we are only allocated one copy of this. So best way if interested is to buy over the website, as once it’s gone it’s gone for good i’m afraid.

Finally from me, two last nice ones for this week. The Orchard are doing a 10th Anniversary (first time on vinyl) pressing of RYAN SHERIDAN’s debut LP ‘The Day You Live Forever’ on gold vinyl. And finally there is a new SAINT ETIENNE record announced for September entitled ‘I’ve Been Trying To Tell You’. This is coming on CDVinyl or Indies Only Clear Vinyl (only 4 copies of the indies allocated to us).

That’s it from mise for this week folks, back to the boss-man!

Thanks Bob!

Right so PIAS / Integral have a biggie / biggie on the 20th of August with the release of VILLAGERS fifth studio album ‘Fever Dreams’ on Domino… Ah great, really looking forward to it.. It’s available on CDStandard Vinyl, and a really limited Irish Only Indie Shop Press on Oxblood Coloured Vinyl into black poly lined inners into a die-cut sleeve with four interchangeable covers, with digital download cards.. Great to see downloads included.. If anyone up the food chain is listening.. Download codes should be a given,, We hear it daily on the shop floor.. Consumers want the codes folks.. Less and less download codes it seems to me.. Charging enough.. Stick the code in the record.. Consumers want the codes.. Is there anybody out there??? Just nod if you can hear me..
Right back to Mr. O’Brien.. 5th Villagers record out on the 20th of August with a really nice Irish Shops Only Vinyl.. Tickets for the Opera House still about maybe.. From what I have heard so far of ‘Fever Dreams’ it’s beautiful.. Here is ‘So Simpatico’ from the album.. Let this wash over you.. Beautiful song..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bguJJOGdAwU

Integral also for the 20th of August have a new JAMES MCMURTRY album on New West ‘The Horses and the Hounds’. There are some really limited reissues by THE KNIFE ‘Deep Cuts’ and ‘Silent Shout’ as well as ROYKSOPP’s class ‘Meoldy A.M’ and lastly via Mute is MARTIN GORE’s ‘The Third Chimpanzee Remixed’ on CD and coloured vinyl..

Sin more or less é for this week folks,
If I don’t see ye later in the week, see ye soon
Thanks for listening,

Ok so, last up for today is PIAS / Integral stuff for the 25th of June.. Before I go on about that… I have a growing concern some titles are not going to make RSD Drop 1… There have been quite a few moved to Drop 2 in the last week (nothing too major, bits and pieces here and there) but i’m becoming aware of titles since not in our suppliers warehouses from the pressing plant for Drop 1 releases.. That’s tight with really only 7 working days until the Drop.. I’m sure it will be fine but ROM have not shipped 4 titles as they haven’t arrived to them yet, and Plastichead said yesterday ‘Our RSD Stuff has not arrived to us yet!! quote, unquote… Fill you with confidence?? Yep me too!!

Anyway, Integral for the 25th of June have new albums by DANIEL AVERYFAYE WEBSTERHIATUS KAIYOTE, LUCY DACUS’s third album ‘Home Video’ via Matador on CD, LP or Indies LP... There are reissues by THE MELVINS, and 2 nice MY MORNING JACKET reissues on ATO ‘Evil Urges’ and ‘It Still Moves’.. There is the last of the PETER MURPHY reissues and an underground electronic compilation ‘Cold Wave #2’ by the masters themselves SOUL JAZZ Records.. Quite a few above but also three very interesting releases from PIAS / Integral for the 25th of June are by JOHN GRANT, his new album entitled ‘Boy From Michigan’ on CD, DLP and Deluxe 2LP version also.. The record is produced by Cate Le Bon.. Here is the title track.. Visually cracking video..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecBpAwovikg

Another fine release is the new ROSE CITY BAND album on Thrill Jockey ‘Earth Trip’, available on CD, LP and Indies Only LP.. Here is ‘Lonely Places’ from the record.. Rose City Band is the solo project of Ripley Johnson from Wooden Ships and Moon Duo..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZlid1_qb8A

Last but not least for sure on this newsletter is the release from Dublin’s own KOJAQUE on Different Recordings.. The debut album form the hip hop artist entitled ‘Town’s Dead’ and here is the title track from the record.. Social commentary is at the heart of all good hip-hop and it’s here in spades.. Available on CD or LP.. Kojaque is set to play Cypress Avenue down here at the end of November.. Could be a nice one to catch..

I don’t have much more concrete info on RSD products since last week.. Sabbath’s RSD release has moved to Drop 2 now and not Drop 1… There are a few Brexit related supply issues.. I will email you directly if affected by one of these.. Things with Proper and Republic of Music are finally starting to iron out.. The one’s that are a constant problem now and are non-runners are the labels before Brexit that universal used to distribute for but Universal did not own the labels, so Brexit for Universal to cut those labels loose to find their own distro into Europe (here).. So labels (small, maybe one or two titles a month I might be buying) like Absolute, Dirty Hit, Cadiz, Fulfill, Genepool, Nova, Wrasse, Townsend, Right Track, and Active have no distro into Europe at the moment.. Republic of Music were the same but we have managed to get sorted with them.. Some of the others still unresolved and a problem.. Working hard here to sort the new Wolf Alice record on Dirty Hit, so fingers crossed on that.. I’ll update next week.. Due out on the 11th of June..

Right so releases for the 4th of June include new releases by MIKE COOLEY / PATTERSON HOOD / JASON ISBELLCROWDED HOUSEJAMESRISE AGAINSTDANIEL AVERYEINAUDITHE ALARMNEW MOON JELLY ROLL FREEDOM ROCKERS, and a ROD STEWART Vinyl Box Set.. There are Reissues by THE AVALANCHESART BLAKEYSARAH JAROSZDECAPITATED, MESHUGGAHANTHRAXMICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP, and the 12” and 7” reissue of THE SPECIALS ‘Ghost Town’… On the CD front there is three HANK WILLIAMS collections out

Moving on to releases for the 11th of June (those are the records i’m buying this week so nod if you see something interesting please).. We will start off with Universal I think.. There are quite a few releases for the 11th.. It’s a day before RSD so traditionally a lot of releases that day cause traditionally a lot of footfall that day.. So Uni for the 11th have a deluxe version of JESSIE WARE’s latest album on EMI ‘What’s Your Pleasure’, a brand new MAROON 5 CD ‘Jordi’ on Polydor on CD or Deluxe CD.. Uni have the next in the DEF LEPPARD Box Set series.. ‘Volume 3’ as a Limited 6CD Box, or a Limited 9LP Box.. Containing all recordings from the band in the 2000’s.. Separately there is vinyl releases (for the very first time) of ‘Songs From The Sparkle lounge’‘Yeah!’ and ‘X’.

Uni also have a reissue of QUINCY JONE’s ‘The Dude’ on UMC.. the 1981 studio album which received 12 Grammy Nominations that year.. Here’s ‘Just Once’ from the man who produced ‘Off The Wall’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’… The dude knew how to put a record together..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQC-i6eEu7w

KISS have a live album out on the 11th through Uni, ‘Off The Soundboard : Tokyo Dome – Japan’ on 2CD or 3LP.. They also have the Disney OST to ‘Cruella’ on CD with Florence and the Machine amongst others.. There is a new LUKAS NELSON & PROMISE OF THE REAL album on Fantasy Records ‘A Few Starts Apart’ will be out on the 11th on CD or LP.. There is the vinyl release of EINAUDI ‘Cinema’ release on 2LP and a debut release on Bluenote for JULIAN LAGE, prodigious jazz guitarist.. Lastly from Uni for the 11th of June via Deutsche Grammophon is DUSTIN O’HALLORAN compilation album ‘Silfur’ on CD or 2LP.. New arrangements with strings of his acclaimed solo piano works..

The Orchard for the 11th of June have the NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS ‘Back The Way We Came Vol. 1 – 2011-2021’ on 4 physical formats.. 2CD3CD Deluxe Edition2LP or 4LP/7”/2CD Book Deluxe boxset.. Noel’s solo output has been excellent in my opinion.. Chasing Yesterday is a great album in my opinion..

SPIRITUALIZED ‘Pure Phase’ reissue is also out on the 11th through The Orchard but the vinyl is now sold out as we were only allocated 10 copies.. Orchard also have the new album from JOANA SERRAT ‘Hardcore From The Heart’ on CD and LP and Dublin band THE MINUTES reissue of ‘Marcata’ on Rubyworks gets a 10th Anniversary Limited Vinyl Pink Coloured reissue.. Metal reissues also from CHILDREN OF BODOM, ANAAL NATHRAKH and UNANIMATED debut album remaster and reissue..

Warner for the 11th of June have the next in the reissue series of BLACK SABBATH boxsets.. This time up is the classic ‘Sabotage’ album as a 4CD box or a 4LP/7” box set.. There is a new BRAD MEHLDAU & ORPHEUS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA CD ‘Variations On A Melancholy Theme’, DR. FEELGOOD’s compilation ‘Singles: The U.A. Years+’ 2LP on ParlophoneASIA’s ‘The Reunion Albums 2007-2012’ CD set, a brand new album from GARBAGE ‘No Gods, No Masters’ on CD, Deluxe CD and Neon Green LP.. Warner also for the 11th of June have the reissue of SIGUR RÓS’ 2012 classic ‘Valtari’ on 2LP on their very own label KRUNK Records..

WEA also has a JOE BONAMASSA Live album ‘Now Serving  Royal Tea – Live From The Ryman on CD/DVD, CD/BluRay and 2LP Clear Vinyl.. There is a brand new MARINA CD and a 25th Anniversary reissue on purple vinyl of MARK MORRISON’s ‘Return Of The Mack’.. What a tune the title track was.. One of the tunes of the decade..

Lastly on Nonesuch via Warner for the 11th of June is the release on vinyl of the new RHIANNON GIDDEN album ‘They’re Calling Me Home’..

Sony for the 11th of June have the RANDY EDELMAN ‘Ghostbusters 2’ OST on vinyl..

PIAS/Integral for the 11th of June have reissues by LANTERNS ON THE LAKE and THE SHINS, and new albums from ALESSANDRO CORTINI..

Proper for the 11th of June have the brand new SLEATER-KINNEY record on Mom&Pop Records, ‘Path Of Wellness’ is the title and it’s on CD, Standard Opaque Black Vinyl or Indies Opaque White Vinyl…

I’ll have ye over to the Bob-man now as he will run through other interesting bits in the pipeline and throw up the weekly playlist

Hey everyone,
Hope you are all keeping safe and well!

A good few up for pre-order today. We’ll get started this week with the two games of fastest fingers first with a couple allocated bits. Again with these, we’ll put our allocations up on the site so if interested safest way to go is to purchase direct from the site, an email might not be seen in time and there’s a good chance these could be gone by the time we see the email. First up there is a limited 7” reissue of R.E.M’s debut single ‘Radio Free Europe’ coming through Uni in July, only 4 copies of this one coming. The second for this week is a nice coloured 30th Anniversary Deluxe vinyl repress of MUDHONEY’s ‘Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge’, with only 5 copies of the LP coming our way. There is a 2CD deluxe edition of this too, but quantity on that should be okay.

Right, with those out of the way i’ll rattle through some of the other nice new bits due to us over the coming weeks and months. There’s a class new TROJAN set being released in a couple of weeks through Warner to kick us off. ‘The Trojan Story’ is due to us June 18th and will be released as a 3LP Vinyl Set or a 3CD Set, both coming with a book telling the stories behind the 50 chosen tracks for the compilation. Always top quality stuff released by the Trojan label.

Other nice bits now up on the site for pre-order include a brand new DURAN DURAN record ‘Future Past’ due into the siopa in October, coming on CD, Deluxe CD, Standard White Vinyl or Indies Transparent Red Vinyl. The excellent ALMOST FAMOUS Soundtrack gets a nice limited 20th Anniversary reissue, released on 2CDDeluxe 5CD, or Limited Black 2LP Vinyl (a first timer it’s officially released on vinyl). MR JUKES & BARNEY ARTIST’s new album ‘Locket’ is due in early July, and the vinyl pressings of JUSTIN BIEBER and OLIVIA RODRIGO’s newest releases are now also on the site.

Last but definitely not least from myself for this week is the great new compilation album ‘SALVATION – Inspired By The Cranberries For Pieta’, released through Universal / RTE 2FM with all proceeds going to Pieta House. The album see’s some cracking Irish Artists covering tracks by The Cranberries, including Pillow Queens, Sinead O’Connor, Wyvern Lingo and many more. It’s released on CD or Yellow Vinyl, and is for a great cause. You can check out Pillow Queens performing ‘When You’re Gone’ on RTE here :

New Manics, Prince Reissue, A Few RSD Updates And It’s Lovely To Be Back

Hi Everyone
Hope everyone is doing ok.. It’s lovely to have the doors back open in the shop, more lovely than I would have thought.. It is a lot more relaxed this way.. Just more natural folks seem more relaxed… It’s great, trade has been good but not hectic, the weekend is coming though.. Bits of info on RSD is starting to filter back to me so I will give it to ye folks as I get it.. Small Faces release is a UK only release so zero coming across the water.. I am in communication with a few companies that we have had Brexit issues with trying to iron out our RSD orders.. I will communicate with you if a wish listed record is caught up or in trouble.. I have attempted to get evert single wish listed record, so I will communicate ones that fail (it will only be a small percentage).. Pity there are no bands or party atmosphere this year.. Hopefully next year.. We are open which is the main thing.. I’ll update more as the weeks slip by.. It is 3 weeks on Saturday now..

Universal were in touch about allocations at the titles that are (slightly) problematic (whereas wish lists exceed or are more or less the same as what will be supplied) includes Amy Winehouse – Remixes, Arianna Live, Def Leppard Live, Elton John, Haim 7”, Lady Gaga, Robert Plant, Status Quo, Tears For Fears, War Child Help EP.. So if these are NB for you, set the alarm folks and make your way as early as possible to the good yacht musiczone.ie… I’m just giving the info!! We will only have 5 copies.. There is also a Arianna Grande Live Album on CD format.. We are just getting 2 copies!! Still no show for RSD from the forgotten man of music.. How quick people move on.. I really thought Ricky martin might have a release this year.. Livin’ La Vida Loca folks 12” remix or something..

Sony UK & Ireland are putting out a 7” single on June 4th of BADDIEL, SKINNER AND LIGHTNING SEEDS ‘Three Lions 96/98’.. Long pause.. Are we good with it.. Long pause… Right.. Altogether now.. It’s coming… I can see the headline on the Daily Digest, ‘man chokes on his Irish stew last Wednesday night whilst reading a music newsletter’…

Right Bob you better take over before I get meself in trouble with someone… Announcements etc… I know and am really excited to hear of a new FISH GO DEEP release due out around the middle of June.. Next PJ Harvey Reissues, Inner City Folk, The Corporation Was Born

Hi Everyone
Hope ye’r all well enough.. Well it looks like we are nearly back.. It’s been a long road.. Call & Collect 021-4967119 next week and back open on the 17th of May!! Whoaaaa that’s our third, fourth or fifth coming now at this stage.. It will be great though.. Will send an update next week on opening hours.. Back to 7 days a week opening hours I think and we will see where we go from there.. We will update the opening hours here and on the website and social medias next week.. Hopefully this is the end of it re closing for one reason or another… Peace and quiet is required fora while now though.. Peace and quiet (bar the ringing of the greasy till!!)

The good siopa is actually 20 years old on Saturday the 8th of May… 20 years.. Crikey.. The 8th of May 2001.. Tuesday morning after the bank holiday weekend, 27 year old boy / man stands behind a counter at 10AM nervous as a kitten.. 30/40 minutes passed and not a soul, then a builder came in, big breakfast roll under arm, big dirty mucky boots (ahh me f**king clean new carpet.. that cost me 500 punts.. I hadn’t a bob going into the thing.. I borrowed 10,000 punts from the creddie and a brother of mine gave me 25k loan as he remortgaged his house!! He is paid back!! Courtesy of the boom in 04/05).. ‘Any AC/DC?’ breakfast roll man / carpet destroyer asks… Some Sony stock was late.. No AC/DC.. Sorry.. ‘Can order it and keep it if you like??’.. ‘Nah you’re grand’.. I’ll never sell a thing again!! 2 minutes later Bridget Jones’ Diary CD soundtrack sold + bagged 16 punts 99 pence, or €21.57.. Yep it was deal pricing in 2001… The corporation was born.. End of day sales 606 Punts.. We were off.. I must say here in 2010/2011 and even 2012, there was weeks when we wouldn’t do 600 pounds in the whole week, or 800 euro.. Days we had zero sales.. Clinging on with fingertips.. So we have seen sunshine and have seen rain.. The first 10 years were generally uneventful bar business going down the tubes if that’s uneventful (2010 + 2011), and the second 10 years had the Flood June 27th 2012, The Fire August 31st 2019 and Covid March 14th 2020.. Enough drama for 50 years… Peace & quiet please and a slightly ringing till..

Bob is with me 10 years this Christmas (the day will probably arrive where he will move in a different direction and that’s important too.. Some man, great calibre).. Shane is 7 years now I think it was 2014 and a more genuine caring man you will struggle to find.. Like Frank Gallagher I like a parteeeee but alas none this time.. Maybe for the 25th!!

Anyway, the tunes!!.. Here are the releases for this Friday the 7th of May… There are new releases by NEW ORDERSQUIDAMY WINEHOUSEWEEZERRAG N’ BONE MANVAN MORRISONGO-GO PENGUINFEARSDODIELISA GERRARD & JULES MAXWELL, and the vinyl pressings of ZAPPA’s OST... Proper for the 14th of May have the new DAVID GRAY album ‘Skellig’ on CD and 2LP.. The history, mythology of the islands of the Kerry Coast have long held Gray’s imagination, hence the title.. This record is more stripped back i’m told.. The synths are gone, guitar, strings, cello and harmonies to the fore front.. Looking forward to it.. He done the cover himself.. Talented boy.. I saw him in Nancy Spains down the street from my homeplace maybe 30 years ago or there or thereabouts and a good few years after that in the Opera House.. His first couple of records on HUT went unnoticed in the UK but were fine albums.. All his stuff is of high quality..

We’ll start off this week with the announcement of the upcoming compilation from Mr RSD Ambassador 2021, NOEL GALLAGHER. ‘Back The Way We Came Vol. 1 (2011-2021) documents the first decade of NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS, with material coming from the first three studio albums and the later EPs released. It’s coming on 2CD, Deluxe 3CD, Vinyl or Super Deluxe Box Set.

The next reissue in the PJ HARVEY series has been announced via Universal, this time for 2007’s ‘White Chalk’. As with the others, there is also a Demos Vinyl and CD of unreleased material released on the same day from the sessions of the album.

Few other nice bits announced include a NEW ORDER ‘Be A Rebel : Remixed’ Clear Vinyl 12” & CD release, a new album by KINGS OF CONVENIENCE, and last but definitely not least, a 25th Anniversary reissue of SUEDE’s ‘Coming Up’ on Deluxe 2CD or Clear Vinyl.

There is CDCassette, and 2 different vinyl formats, both which we’ve been allocated numbers and are very very limited. Hi everyone,
Hope all is well enough and the form is good.. April 21st 2021 already! Noises about non-essential retail opening by middle of May now… Not sure but it may jump straight over click / call & collect to being open… If it does, how bad!! Just with the re-opening, be it call & collect or open, we do ask a favour of you kind folk.. It has been a messy 16 weeks now nearly and there’s a pile of this here and a pile of that there (stuff all over the shop… ‘shop’ used as a Corkism here).. So we would be so grateful if you could email what you are collecting, that would be a brilliant help (not exactly needle in a haystack, but will save us trolling though emails to find the few bits there for me… Not being smart, it would be a great help.. ‘Lads i’ll be in tomorrow for A, B and C”.. Perfect, sound job.. I should have got a job in NPHET… Speaking of rules… RSD 2021 Lists and Wishlists and the good soo-a’s orders for said product needs to be in by the end of the Month… Here is the full comprehensive list of what should be available to us :

Need my own wish lists to the record companies by Friday noon the 30th of April.. So only a week to go for most… I may have a little longer for Universal.. Personally I think it is a very good this year.. (It’s all subjective I know) but fine releases.. The Academic record has not been available since it’s release, Amy Winehouse remix album, Ani Defranco’s self titled debut, Ash’s ‘BBC Session’, Belle & Sebastian ‘Arab Strap’, Bert Jansch, Billy Nomates, Chemical Brothers ‘surprise release’, Conor Oberst, CSNY ‘Deja Vu : Alternatives’, The Cure, The Doors ‘Morrisson Hotel Sessions’, Echo & The Bunnymen Live, Fela Kuti ‘Open & Close’, Fontaines D.C. ‘Live in Kilmainham’, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Grateful Dead Live, Janis ‘Pearl’, John Prine Live CD and LP set, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed ‘Set the Twilight Reeling’, Love, Matt Bellamy, Miles Davis, Jack Johnson, Mogwai ‘Zero Zero Zero’, Biggie, Pearl Jame, Prince, Richmond Fontaine, Planty, Roisin Murphy, The Stones class compilation, Rory ‘Cleveland Part 2’, Shame Live, Sinead live, Sisters Of Mercy ‘BBC Sessions’, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Therapy – Nurse, The Thrills ‘So Much’, U2 ‘Fire’, Warpaint ‘The Fool : Andrew Weatherall Remixes’ are just a few (quite a few I know) that caught my own eye from the 541 titles listed this year… You know where are are if you would like us to wishlist something and we will try and obtain as many as possible..

It’s coming on CDVinylIndies Vinyl and there is also a coloured Irish Exclusive Vinyl release. I also see Mr. O’Brien has announced a show in November in The Opera House. To enter, pre-order the brand new album with us on Vinyl or CD and you will be entered into the draw! Lots of semi interesting stuff out for the 2nd of April but not with the majors …the ORCHARD have three nice new releases out…all new studio albums.
Firstly we have the new JOHN SMITH record on Commoner records….speaking of Commoners, we had JOHN SMITH perform in the shop a number of years ago when we were in Douglas, he was doing a couple of nights in Coughlans and agreed to do a performance for us the afternoon between both…it was agreed that id collect John at the metropole in Cork on the afternoon in question…John is a tall man and i was driving me auld black ford fiestiee at the time  ( normally it is impeccably clean as my friends would vouch for, but this day it  was a tad untidy) Johns guitar barely fit in the car dont mind him ( translation from Cork for ” dont mind him” is..  John was very fortunate ( haunted )  to be able to fit in the car also!) . He could have been thinking where in jaysuses name am i going, but in great fairness to him , he didnt bat an eyelid …not a bother ! i quite enjoyed the car journey , im sure John did also when he could see over his kness, the smell from Patricks bridge that day wasnt to bad, easterly wind.
He gave a tremendous performance in the shop after, seriously talented vocally and  with the guitar…really enjoyed it.
JOHN BLEK brought him home that day if memory serves, i think i offered the fiestie but the 2 small fellas declined or did someone spot JS thumbing on Maryborough hill.
anyway, sorry…JOHN SMITHS new record is out on the 2nd of April , its called ” the fray” and is on CD and long player….heres a beautiful tune from the album with guest SARAH JAROSZ,,,,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSaLKF7f0nE

the ORCHARD also have the new studio album by THE FRATELLIS ” half drunk under a full moon” on CD and LP as well as STURGILL SIMPSON ” cutting grass vol 2 – cowboy arms sessions” on CD, LP OR INDIES ONLY BLUE LP.

PIAS for the 9th of April have the BILL MACKAY/NATHAN BOWLES debut album on Drag City ” keys” its called…sounds nice, heres a tune
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBllpGjo-k0

GUIDED BY VOICES have an LP reissue of ” under the bushes, under the stars” on indies only coloured vinyl.
there is a reissue on SOUL JAZZ of jazz drummers STEVE REIDs ” nova” album.
lastly from Pias for the 9th of April is the first 2 in the PETER MURPHY ( BAUHAUS) reissue series  on Beggars Banquet on coloured vinyl with the reissue of first 2 solo albums…” should the world fail to fall apart” and follow up ” love hysteria” …heres title track from debut
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvwJ-p5R67s

1. John Blek ‘The Embers’ Launch At Music Zone.. Genuine winner!!!

Ah man, the Top 20 International was savage close.. Only 9 votes separated Fontaines D.C (Double winners.. Conragts!!) down the Bruce in 4th.. 9 votes.. It was never so tight.. Great charts I think.. Fontaines did run away with the Irish album, but very close after that.. Pillow Queens 49 votes, John Blek 45, Bleeding Hearts 39, Niamh Regan 37, Silverbacks 33, Ailbhe Reddy 29… Very close!! First time ever ‘our’ gig won the gig of the year… Genuinely.. But it was a special night.. Will draw the name for the €50 voucher out of a hat ‘live’ on d’video on Friday…

My own personal favourite album last year (still now!!) and it’s so subjective.. We had hundreds of albums in for the international top 20… Hundreds… Tastes differ folks.. But I loved the Bleeding Heart Pigeons album ‘Stir’.. A bloody great album I.M.O… Here is ‘All For The Best’ from it  :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKWPTsb3_Sc

We have no stock of it at the moment but if anyone is interested I can contact the lads and see if we can get more!!

I also really like The Strokes, Waxahatchee, Bruce, Bob and especially Khruangbin.. To be honest
I the quality of the Irish albums are phenomenal in my opinion.. Every single album in that top 20 is really good.. Do have soft spots for Niamh Regan, Paddy Dennehy, Joe Chester, R.S.A.G and of course The Emperors!!!

Right, hand you to Bobby now for any upcoming albums etc…

Hey folks,
Hope you are all keeping safe and well. Quite a lot there this week, some nice announcements again!
Gonna start off with something a bit different. We have just put on the site for pre-order the brand new announcement from Rega, for their new loudspeakers called ‘Kyte’ Loudspeakers. We are big fans of Rega products in the shop, so really nice to see new speakers from them, first time we will have speakers from them in the shop. These are due to ship in Spring 2021, but if any interest pop us a mail and we can try get a more concrete date.

On to the tunes! There is another live NEIL YOUNG release announced, this one for late March is entitled ‘Young Shakespeare’, recorded 50 years ago for German TV, just two months after the release of the exceptional ‘After The Gold Rush’. A nice one which has just gone live (quite literally, announced at 5PM today, Wednesday 17th) is a new live release from BLACK PUMA’s, called ‘Capitol Cuts’. This is gonna be limited on red vinyl, and is due for release in June

I’ll rattle through the rest, there’s quite a bit there so I don’t want to keep ye all day! Coming over the next few weeks / months there is a new deluxe edition of FLEETWOOD MAC’s ‘Live’ as a 3CD/2LP/7” box set,  a new JOE STRUMMER release ‘Assembly’, featuring tracks from his solo career, and live versions of hits from the Clash. This is coming on CD, Vinyl or Limited Red Vinyl. Thanks Bob!! Before I go there is a lovely charity release CD coming out on the 26th of February.. SomeRiseSomeFall brings together a bunch of musicians who record their own takes on some obscure enough songs.. A Sweet Foo Fighters Competition, New Tindersticks, And A Great Loss For The Cork Music Scene

Hi everyone,
Hope all is well with ye.. Another week passed I suppose, only a few more weeks.. It’s the longest time without call & collect, it’s the most restrictive lockdown we have had to be honest but saying that January was good considering how restricting trade is, so we can’t complain.. Probably done 60% of what I would hope to have done… So we are fine.. Heard the news yesterday of the Kino and was saddened to hear it… The whole situation just turned out to be unmanageable in the end i’d say… Great loss in the short term for the music scene here in Cork, but i’m sure the lads will be back stronger than ever.. Tough for them though, upheaval, shite to deal with, heart goes out to them a bit.. I know what upheaval is like.. The lads and their staff are excellent at what they do, have a love for it.. There will be many a great night ahead in their next establishment.. Bobby would have worked with the lads in the Kino and knows all the staff well.. Really tough time out there for a lot of folks in the music industry.. Hopefully by the end of the year things will be different. and we can support the music scene like we never supported it before… Best of luck to all the Kino folk in the future…

Look, thanks for the support over the last month.. It’s a very restrictive environment to be working in and we are doing our best.. Working hard Shane, Bob and myself are… It’s weird, it feels like we are sprinting to go backwards.. It is restrictive and believe it or not a lot more time consuming.. So bare with us, we are doing our best.. Lucky to be doing anything also… We are mindful of that…
Anyways, Sin é for this week I suppose,
Thanks for listening as always

Fleet Foxes And Arlo Parks, New Ben Howard, And The Video Is Back!

Hi everyone,
Hope all is well out there with ye… Jan is nearly put to bed I suppose.. The ‘Brexit’ thing is still painful but learning more about it all the time, so progress is being made… It’s long winded but where a lot of my problems lay was forms not filled out right by the supplier or couriers… The couriers are customs agents now and are responsible for collectiong VAT / Customs / Fees from importer (me for example)… So they email you to pay the fee and you pay it… Problem is (one of them), they are still emailing you 5 days later looking for the payment (which you have paid!!).. They are inundated with it / sending requests for payments / getting payments and ultimately releasing the goods… Long long story short, their systems are facing big teething problems and creaking with the volumes… Frustrating thing is we have a customs number and are set up for postponed accounting for VAT, so if paperwork is correct from supplier / courier we don’t get caught in the rat-trap.. Anyway, it’s not being done right sometimes and it brings problems… Anyway, i’m glad I started that… Night night… Are ye not asleep yet???

Right, the music.. Releases for this Friday the 29th include the fabulous ARLO PARK’s album on Transgressive Records, the BICEP album landed (Was due on the 22nd).. The vinyl editions are very limited folks.. PIAS for this weekend also have the new MARTIN GORE EPGOAT GIRL’s second album, and a JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN live album also..

Universal for this Friday the 29th of Jan have the new STEVEN WILSON album ‘The Future Bites’ on limited vinyl and CD… Here is ‘King Ghost’ from the new album
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSvdLcS62ZM

Universal are also reissuing POLLY JEAN HARVEY’s 4th album ‘Is This Desire?’ this Friday, as well as a separate Demos LP of sessions from the recordings… Uni also have reissues from THE MAMAS & PAPASTHE FLYING BURITO BROTHERS BANDJOHN SCOFIELD & PAT METHENY, THIN LIZZY and BOB MARLEY’s savage boxset ‘Songs of Freedom’.

Warner for the 29th (this Friday) have the ST. GERMAIN ‘Tourist : Travel Versions’ reissue and STEVE HARLEY’s compilation LP…

Music on Vinyl have a box on route from Holland to us which contains the MILES DAVIS ‘In Tokyo’ vinyl, ENNIO MORRICONE’s ‘Passion’ on coloured, limited vinyl, WILLIE NELSON’s ‘Heroes’ coloured / limited vinyl, the 3 UNCLE TUPELO coloured / numbered reissues, and also the STONE ROSES remix album..

The video is back!! We, some 2 of the 3 of us, have been doing a weekly VLOG for years… I’d say 2014/2015 was it Bob?? Anyway, we spend hours scripting them every week, and take them very seriously…. We show off / showcase releases for the week… Anyway, ‘the fire of Noel Gallagher’ put paid to D’Video in August 2019 so we decided to bring ’em back… This one is long winded a bit but normally about 5 minutes.. Up on the site and youtube now
https://musiczone.ie/videos/

Right soon releases for the 5th of Feb… Oh sorry before that… The Functionality of the Siopa is Website only, there is no call and collect or click and collect… We have no problem keeping records as said in earlier newsletters… So we are hoping that call and collect will be available to us again in 3 or 4 weeks time, it is a game changer for us, but I ain’t going to crib here, there are families being torn apart, we can keep the records tucked away, no problem. Sin sin

Right so the 5th of Feb.. One I forgot to mention in recent weeks, and a biggie it is and all… The new FLEET FOXES album is out physically on Friday the 5th of Feb… I haven’t got listening to it yet, but by a lot of accounts it’s a cracker of an album… In face quite a few folks put it in their ‘Best Albums of 2020’ lists they sent to us… The Musiczone.ie Board had a (EGM) meeting though and decided cause it was not physically released in 2020, it would not be entered in 2020 but will be for 2021… The board’s decision is final.. Saw these guys in The Opera House a few years back… Was it Summer 18 or Summer 19??? The morning after the gig I was driving to work and there was the guitarist strolling down the Rochestown Road, most if not all passer-by’s oblivious… Should have pulled over and invited him to the shop!! Savage, talented band.. Here’s ‘Can I Believe You’ from the new album ‘Shore’ :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2E2DpWO3-Y

Proper also for the 5th have a SUN RA LP reissue of ‘Fireside Chat With Lucifer’

Sony for the 29th of Jan were meant to have the MILES DAVIS ‘Kind of Blue’SIMON & GARFUNKEL ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and MEAT LOAF ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ clear vinyl reissues, but now coming on the 5th of Feb… Also from Sony on the 5th is the new FOO FIGHTER’s CD, LP or Iimited LP ‘Medicine At Midnight’.. I remember buying the first FOO’s album on CD back in the day… Circa 25 years ago i’d say… 94 maybe??

PIAS for the 5th have the BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD album..

Warner for the 5th have the new STAVES album and a reissue by GEORGE BENSON

Uni for the 5th has new albums by SLOWTHAI and COMMON

Proper for the 5th also have a JOHN MAYALL 27 Disc CD Boxset called ‘The First Generation 1965-1974.. Seriously limited this one.. 5000 copies worldwide.

I was deeply saddened yesterday to hear of the passing of Cork Soprano CARA O’SULLIVAN as i’m sure thousands more were… I knew CARA a little from coming in and out of the shop down through the years for various things (sold a few cds also) and she was a great character, always bubbly, always looking for a laugh or laughing.. A really warm person.. I didn’t know Cara really well but I was (like the whole music community in Cork) knocked for six yesterday… Ahh.. A great personality.. This here always gave shivers down my spine but ever more so now… Here is Cara with the RTE Concert Orchestra doing the theme for ‘Once Upon A Time In The West’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KO4d5xNhqw

I hope Ennio is looking for you Cara girl, wherever you are may you rest in peace.

Cara could bound into the shop, say ‘hows it going?’, i’d say ‘good girl how’s things?’. Blast out a line of a song that was playing in the shop in “her” voice (magic!!) and crack a joke about something and leave.. Whirl wind but such a warm, pleasant one.. R.I.P Cara

Moving on to announcements of stuff due down the line.. We’ll start this week with the announcement of ROYAL BLOOD’s new album ‘Typhoons’, available on CD, LP or Indies Exclusive Blue Vinyl. Good prices on it too, which is always nice to see.

NEIL YOUNG has a live album due out, ‘Way Down In The Rust Bucket’, recorded in 1990 following the ‘Ragged Glory’ album release. This is coming as a 2CD4LP, or a nice numbered 4LP/2CD/DVD boxset!

Will rattle off the remaining few! There are upcoming vinyl reissues of NAS’ ‘Illmatic’ on clear vinyl, CAROLE KING’s ‘Tapestry‘ is getting a new vinyl reissue, there is a new BOB DYLAN 3CD entitled ‘1970’ featuring George HarrisonTOM GRENNAN has a new album due in March, and Music On Vinyl have a couple of nice reissues, including a 3LP version of PHILIP GLASS’ ‘Dance Nos. 1-5’, the Soundtrack to THE LAST EMPEROR (done by David Byrne / Ryuichi Sakamoto / Cong Su), there is a new album by YO-YO MA & KATHRYN STOTT, and finally from MOV is a limited coloured vinyl pressing of TESTAMENT’s ‘The Legacy’.

And finally from myself this week, a nice one from the Cork Music Scene. Cork legend JOHN SPILLANE is back with a new album due in at the beginning of April, entitled John Spillane’s Lapwing Nation – 100 White Horses. John is great, a lovely songwriter and a brilliant performer. I have very fond memories of his set for one of our first RSD Parties maybe back in 2013/2014. Always brings great energy and spirit when he performs. This is one we’re looking forward to giving a good few spins in the siopa on release! It will be available on CD or LP.

That’s it from me this week folks,
Back to the bossman!

Right so, just want to mention the new MOGWAI album coming out on Rock Action on the 19th of Feb (cause I need to order this week).. ‘As The Love Continues’ is the name of the record and it’s available on a host of formats, CD2CD set which has a photo booklet and bonus CD of demo tracks, there is a standard double LP, an Indies Only Yellow Coloured Vinyl, and a boxset which contains a Red Coloured 2LP Gatefold, a 12” of the bonus demo material, the gatefold CD, a photo booklet and a download code... Bowie’s Birthday Single, New Foos And London Grammar 2

Hi everyone,
Hope ye are all well and safe.. ‘Strange Days have found us, strange days have tracked us down. They’re going to destroy our casual joys’… James Douglas Morrison 53 years ago said it best… Time to baton down the hatches folks again, big time… Lockdown 3 commenced in work for me on Monday the 4th… It was eerie, couple of customers.. Eerie… We had strange Mondays in January before (none more so that the morning after Bowie’s death in 2016.. The strangest Monday morning / day I ever put down in a record shop).. The last act I did that Sunday night was listen to Blackstar before going to sleep, only to wake to a text from Tim, ‘BOWIE’S DEAD’… What more could be said.. It was a strange / surreal Monday.. Folks gravitated towards record shops that day all over the world I think.. Strange start this year.. Sad start this year also… Gerry Marsden, Liam Reilly, Robbie Callan, and down here locally, a member of the legendary Lynch Mob, Reuben Lynch.. R.I.P all.. A jolt to the senses…

Right so, time to go hawking I suppose… Website open, call and collect / click and collect within guidelines available.. 021-4967119 is the phone or email shop@musiczone.ie or raymusiczone@gmail.com..

Before I go on with the hawking festival, if interest in something we have no bother keeping something for you once you honour it.. If up the country and want to wait for 3 items / records that’s also no bother.. Just get in touch.. We’re easy!! (but honourable)…

Right, due out for this Friday (although deliveries are another kettle of fish at the moment cause of the other thing.. So bare with us!! We will be in touch.. Happy fecking new year!!).. Right, MR. BOWIE would have been 74 this Friday the 8th, so there’s a Birthday 7” Single coming out with covers of Lennon’s ‘Mother’ and Dylan’s ‘Trying To Get To Heaven’... There are 8147 numbered copies of these available across the world.. 1000 cream ones on Bowie.net and the rest in shops (standard black ones) in shops across the globe including the good siopa musiczone.ie.. 8147 is a reference to the birth of our lord… Donny McCaslin… Sorry 8th Jan 1947 wasn’t McCaslin’s birthday I don’t think.. It has some significance anyway… These won’t last and i’ll try get a firm number tomorrow on how many I will have..

Right Friday the 8th or sometime in the near future anyway we will have BARRY GIBB & FRIENDS ‘Greenfields : The Gibb Brothers Songbook’ through Uni..

Uni for the 22n of Jan have some DIO vinyl reissues.. In fact 7 of his 10 albums.. The Mercury Albums are reissued.. Also there is a blast of Mariah Carey reissues on vinyl : ‘Charmbracele’, ‘E=MC2’, ‘Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel’, and ‘l I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse’. Finally from Uni for the 22nd is a new RHYE album..

Next few weeks from Sony start this Friday (or early next week i’d say!) with ALICE IN CHAINS’ debut album ‘Facelift’ reissued on double vinyl.. Due for release the 8th of Jan.. Sony for the 15th of Jan have the new ZAYN CD, and  ‘THE GHOST OF TSHUSHIMA’ original game soundtrack vinyl release. Sony for the 22nd of Jan have new albums by BRING ME THE HORIZON, and WARDRUNA’s ‘Kvitran’ on CD, Black Vinyl or indies only red vinyl.. Jan 22nd from Sony also brings limited vinyl coloured runs on some classics.. So on cream vinyl we will have SANTANA’s ‘Moonflower’, and all the rest are on white vinyl, which are MILES DAVIS’ ‘In A Silent Way’LOU REED’s ‘Coney Island Baby’SIMON & GARFUNKEL’s ‘Greatest Hits’BOB DYLAN’s ‘Nashville Skyline’ and ‘John Wesley Harding’, and lastly ELVIS’ self titled album..

The Orchard for the 8th of Jan have the new PASSENGER album ‘Songs For The Drunk and Broken Hearted’ on CD, Deluxe CD, or 2LP.. The Orchard for the 15th of Jan have a new MATTHEW SWEET album ‘Catspaw’ on CD or Indies Vinyl as well as a return of THE THE with the soundtrack to the film ‘Muscle’.. CD only for now..

It’s 11.07 on Wednesday Morning, 6/1/21, and oblivious to me until very recently, it is now very likely that click & collect and call & collect are non-runners from tonight / tomorrow… Again, it is what it is… Now it is going to pinch big time, but again it’s the right thing if it needs to be done… The medics the length and breadth of the country must be sick to death of this virus (as we all are) and a handle needs to be put on the curse of a thing then so be it.. We will still operate the website as usual for delivery and phone / email in orders and we can deliver or keep for you until things ease up (We would ask again to try honour them)… So that’s it, we support the decisions made and we get on with it as best we can, we all need to put this virus back in it’s box…

Right so, enough about all that.. The music.. Monday, eerie Monday had me thinking (again) what a blessed environment I / We work in.. Shane has often said it before.. We are surrounded by quality and culture and stories and song.. The music.. So we go again..

PIAS for the 15th of Jan have some tasty releases.. They have via Dead Oceans the new, 2nd, SHAME album ‘Drunk Tank Pink’ on indies only Galaxy Pink Vinyl, Standard Pink Vinyl or CD.. We really liked this band’s debut a few years back… One of the new upcoming crews out there.. First two singles very solid on a few listens.. Major Talking Heads / Wire / Jon Lydon vibes going on… No bad things.. Will be getting plenty of listens here.. Here is ‘Snow Day’ from the record :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dVZKosGgUo

PIAS also have the new SLEAFORD MODS album ‘Spare Ribs’ on Rough Trade Records on CD, Indies Only LP and standard black LP… Telling it like it is, like no one else out there really is at the moment.. Refreshing.. I missed them about 5 years ago now when they played The Crane Lane here in Cork on a Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.. It was meant to be class altogether… Cork hopefully again in the future…

PIAS for the 15th Jan have a new KURT VILE E.P ‘Speed, Sound, Lonely KV’ on Matador as a CD or 12” Vinyl, and includes a duet with the late, great John Prine.. Oh boy I think about Prine a lot through this Covid thing.. Here’s the tune if you don’t know it’.. ‘How Lucky’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNDmIrh1Cwo

PIAS for the 22nd have the new BICEP record ‘Isles’ on CD, Indies 3LP version, or Picture Disc Vinyl... We work as a bit of a tag team with this newsletter these days… Strengths and weaknesses of the letter I have plenty.. Good cop / bad cop… So i’m going to tag in Bobby ‘The Hitman With A Lotta Heart’ Buckley… The hitman will try move ye’r hands towards purses / wallet / credit / debit cards with upcoming beauties on CD and LP.. Email or buy from the site or pay over the phone for delivery.. Whatever works.. Here’s the hitman! :

Hey folks,
‘Hitman With A Lotta Heart’ here now.
A lotta heart as there’s a whole lot coming out!!

Kicking us off, FOO FIGHTERS are back with their new LP ‘Medicine At Midnight’, due out at the beginning of February. The band’s 10th outting will be available on CDVinyl or very limited Indies only blue vinyl. Out through Sony

Also now announced through Sony, we will have the brand new LONDON GRAMMAR album ‘Californian Soil’ due in on CDVinylIndies Vinyl or as again, a very limited boxset. It’s the band’s third LP, and the first since 2017’s hugely successful ‘Truth Is A Beautiful Thing’. We have just been told in the last hour or so that this new London Grammar is now pushed back until April for release!

Time to be a bit of the bad-cop myself! Just a warning, both the limited indies Foos LP and the London Grammar box set are very very limited. They will be gone. If interested let us know and we will do our best.

One that there has been a good bit of buzz about for a few months now, which was due to land before Christmas but was delayed is the new Greatest Hits compilation from the mighty mighty THE WHITE STRIPES. This is now coming on February 15th as a 2LP Vinyl or CD

Another savage announcement.. CATHAL COUGHLAN of Microdisney /
Fatima Mansions has a new record out, ‘Song of Co-Aklan’, on CD or LP due out in March, first new music in 10 years. Guest a plenty on it freisin. Looking forward to it!

The next two reissues / demo releases in the PJ HARVEY series from Universal are also now announced. First up ”Is This Desire?’, and ‘Is This Desire? – Demos’ are due in on vinyl on January 29th, and following this the excellent ‘Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea’ alongside ”Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea : Demos’ are out a little later on February 29th.

There’s a few very nice Music On Vinyl reissues coming down the line over the next month or so.. We will have limited, numbered and coloured reissues from UNCLE TUPELO, and WILLIE NELSON, and there are standard vinyl reissues landing of THE STONE ROSES ‘Remixes’ and also of MILES DAVIS ‘Miles in Tokyo’, which has never available on vinyl in Europe before.

I’ll rattle off the final couple of pre-orders so I don’t keep ye all day! PHIL COLLINS’ has announced a limited picture disc 40th Anniversary pressing of ‘Face Value’ through Warner, there is a new HANS ZIMMER soundtrack release to ‘Hillbilly Elegy’, there are two SUEDE reissues due (the original ‘The London Suede’ reissue, and ‘See You In The Next Life’), a reissue of the MARC BOLAN / T. REX ‘Shadowhead’ rarities compilation LP,  and Shellshock have new live session CD releases from DAVID BOWIE and PINK FLOYD.

Another mention for MR. BOWIE. The next in the series of coloured vinyl 45th Anniversary Reissues is due out on January 22nd through, and this time it’s for ‘Station To Station’, pressed on Red & White vinyl. Again, like the previous releases this will not be sold or available through any website, it’s a shop sale only release. So if you are interested pop us a mail and we will make sure one is tucked aside and do our best!

Last, but definitely not least from mise! Cork’s own JOHN BLEK has announced a new, very limited release (150 Vinyl, 350 CDs) from the Digressions series, ‘Digressions #2 : Grounded’. The album was written and recorded in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are lucky to have a few copies for sale on both Vinyl and CD. Myself and Ray have been lucky enough to have heard the album, and are both in strong agreement that again, it is excellent. Excellent. The song crafting from John as always is superb, with this limited album release allowing John to use varying techniques and instrumentation.  The first single is released this Friday, January 8th, and is called ‘Right Moves’. Be sure to check it out!

If you would like to check out all the upcoming pre-orders on the site for the next few months, you can take a look here :

Ferocious changes in a short period in a short period… I don’t think I have ever worked harder than in that period, and I think the 2 lads would tell you they haven’t either i’d say… I’m haunted to have had them throughout this.. Constant upheaval, goalposts changing all the time.. Every small business i’m sure will tell you the same… And we were one of the lucky ones, having a website allowed us to function to a good level especially recently in lockdown 2… Also folks are definitely trying to support Irish businesses which is a great thing and hopefully will last.. There is a lovely 4LP expanded vinyl box set release of TAME IMPALA’s excellent debut album ‘Innerspeaker’, released for the 10th Anniversary of the album. What a band. How they’ve developed their sound over the past ten years is exceptional, a great song writer. Personally I love the sound of ‘Innerspeaker’, very 60’s / psych-rock feel to it. Well worth a listen if you haven’t heard the album

Arctic Monkeys and Macca, Black Friday 2020 Information, And A New Liam Gallagher Single

Hi everyone,
Hope all is well with you… Strange year in work, strange 15 months… I won’t slag off Noel Gallagher again in our hopefully soon (as in next year) to be returning videos… I can’t remember but I did have some kind of playful pop off him in the video the day before the fire… Global pandemic then… The little devil…

Look all signs point to our doors being back open Tuesday morning, December 1st… I have no idea how business will be… Big favour to ask though… For the 3 weeks, that’s all it really is, up to Christmas, if the shop is anyway busy, could we do our business and slip out again… I know it goes against everything we feel the shop is… But a favour… Come in, say hello, wave goodbye (don’t forget the bit in the middle!!).. The rules of engagement are the same.. On our table as you enter the shop… As we all know, this Covid thing is tricky to manage as everyones thoughts and expectations are different.. Hopefully after Christmas things will become half normal again and as the spring and early summer appears fully normal… Nearly there… Big chats, full house, in-stores, taking the mick, hangovers.. It’s in the stars…

Right, on to the tunes… This Friday is ‘Black Friday’ and i’ll get to that in a minute.. Other releases due into us Friday are the AMY WINEHOUSE CD CollectionPAUL WELLER’s ‘Wake Up The Nation’ Remix CD album, WELLER’s ‘On Sunset : Remixes’ 12” vinyl, NAS’ ‘Kings Disease’ vinyl, PETER GABRIEL’s ‘Growing Up : Live’ vinyl, all those from Uni…

Warner for Friday have a nice few.. BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG ‘No Fun Mondays’ covers album, PAOLO NUTINI’s ‘Sunny Side Up’, and you guessed it, they were all yellow and still are.. Fine album… THE STRANGLER’s ‘Peaches’ V.B.O is in on vinyl, SPANDAU BALLET ’40 Years’ greatest hits compilation on Double LP or 3CD, SHAKIN’ STEVENS ‘Singled Out’ best of job on vinyl or CD also and they have a MADNESS ‘Absolutely’ on vinyl also..

Lastly from WEA is SMASHING PUMPKINS... I am sold out for now.. Will have more standard vinyl and CDs next week but got cut to shreds on baby pink indies vinyl so couldn’t fulfil 2 pre-orders… Sorry lads… Ye know who ye are… Sorry.. Sometimes we lose and sometimes we win… Getting a couple of extra KERBDOG’s Friday if anyone’s interested.. On the site now or email us…

Right so, for this Friday ‘Black Friday’ the call it (i’ll keep my thoughts to myself), we have won some and we have lost some… I’ll start with the bad news… I shall be getting ZERO quantities of releases by FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE + BLUE OYSTER CULT, SHARON JONES, NANCY SINATRA… The word from the record companies was there was very few of these… Sorry…
Problem with GEORGE THROGOOD… I’ll be in touch with ye folks that are interested…

Right the better news (not for some!!), we will have copies of U2’s ‘Boy’, LOU REED ‘Magic + Loss’, JOHN PRINE ‘Asylum Albums’.. Pricey, very pricey really but lovely and only 4K in the world .. MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE ‘Life On Murder Scene’, ALANIS MORISSETTE ‘Live In 02’, UNCLE TUPELO ‘Live at Lounge Ax’, NICK CAVE ‘Cosmic Dancer’ 7”, ALICE IN CHAINS ‘Sap’, JARVIS COCKER reissues, DRIVE BY TRUCKERS, JONATHAN WILSON 12”, GEORGE HARRISON ‘My Sweet Lord’ 7″, CHRIS CORNELL 7″, EDITORS ‘Back Room’… There are others i’m sure but just can’t think of them..

Protocol for the day is phone the shop 021-4967119 and we can take it from there… There will be enough U2 until they go online at 6PM… What’s left will go online then at 6… It’s a mini-RSD again I suppose… The phone will be answered from 10AM (must get the nightwalker to school like in the bowels of East Cork) so sin an sceal with that… 021-4967119 or the emails are the best way to get us until we are locked in again next week hopefully..

Christy Moore’s ‘The Early Years’, Arctic Monkeys ‘Live At Royal Albert Hall’, and A Lovely Shout Out From Ryan Tubridy

How are ye all folks,
Hope all is ok with ye… Green shoots of hope announced on Tuesday… Fingers crossed.. You’d be sick shit of it wouldn’t you… But sher that’s the way of it.. Lockdown life is a bit weird here early in the week.. Better at weekends.. Getting odd jobs done though.. Website stocktake, returns, damaged stuff, shop stock take all to be done… One quick word on the records away for folks, please don’t get odd… But if it’s in a box for 2 months plus i’ll be sending nudging emails to pick them up… No oddness allowed please… Need to clear some decks.. That’s fair enough I think!!

Right so releases for Friday include the CHRISTY MOORE ‘Early Years’ 3LP and 2CD/DVD and 2CD.. The vinyl is beautiful and sometimes when you see a record you wish you had bought more of it… There are 1000 copies available… All hand numbered 1/1000 and I have 14 copies left to sell.. It’s lovely… Good friend of the shop and Cork Artist Vincent Zara done the cover of the Christy album and it’s great.. Vincent was also responsible for Rory’s ‘Check Shirt Wizard’ cover.. Talented boy..

Friday the 20th of November is up next and is a good week for releases I think… PIAS has the new, excellent WAR ON DRUGS Live Album and there’s an indies only purple vinyl with selected retailers only… Well we are one of them folks…. Another way to make it more appealing and palatable to ye folks, the consumer… Selected retailers only coloured vinyl… That’s us lads… I better stop aiming my gun at my foot… Selected retailer that I am…. I was chatting to Shane about Amy during the week actually, savage talent.. ‘Back To Black’ sounds great and will still sound great in 100 years.. Some of the songs, ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’, ‘Love Is A Losing Game’.. Just great songs… A great album.. A great tragedy.. I think Amy was a happy go lucky enough girl until fame and the industry got hold of her… Like, she was getting Princess Di type paparazzi shite for a good 2/3 years before she died and then alcohol poisoning, all alone… Ah just very sad… Shane saw her he said in Oxegen and she was alright (she was drunk) but the voice was savage he said… Anyway pity…

I’ll hand over to Bobby who will run through some other releases for down the road in a little bit… A few beauties there I think… Before I do that, a little chat with Bobby… We are famous kid!!! Mr. Ryan Tubridy gave us (me, you, Shane & Cormac also) a lovely shout out on his radio programme this morning… He is, in huge fairness to him, trying to get folks to think about buying Irish / From Irish Businesses this Christmas and going forward also.. So that idea about the signed photographs of the 3 of us could work alright… 50 quid each for the signed ones, 20 quid for the unsigned ones you were saying… Serious though, thanks for the light shining Mr. Tubridy, thank you. About it (buying Irish), when you are going shopping now as Paul Heaton may say, ‘stop for a minute, think for a minute’… There are great independent shops in every town and every city up and down this country… Give them a go.. The biggest beast in the sky is hoovering up millions of pounds / dollars an hour… It may feel easier, but stop for a minute, think for a minute.. Google is your friend in helping to find the .ie’s … As far as we are concerned, in our little Star Wars, we are there on price, we are definitely there on customer service and a bit of craic, we just don’t have the resources to buy tonnes of every record, so albums etc can slip out of stock. But we promise to communicate, to be honest (a given) and to do our very best… I don’t think you can be fairer than that.. Folks like us are the length and breadth of the country.. Give them a try!!! We have tried to get the audio from the lovely mention today up on our YouTube channel. Our apologies here as the sound isn’t great, but we have it up now. Again, a huge huge thank you Mr. Tubridy.

Right Bobby, you’re on kid with a few upcoming releases (we better get signing photos then!!)

How’s it going everyone,

I reckon this could be a first live album release from the band, and it has a cracking setlist. And better still, all the proceeds from the album are going to War Child to help support the amazing charity due to the impact that COVID-19 has had on their fund-raising.. Hats off Mr Turner and co. I saw the band on this tour in Dublin, and the sound was phenomenal, so really looking forward to giving this a few spins!
