The-White-Stripes-Get-Behind-Me-Satan

The year is nipping along already… Onto releases for Friday the 3rd of Feb now.

UNIIVERSAL (vinyl records)

The biggest release I feel is the new ELBOW album ‘Little Fictions’ on CD and gatefold LP with codes…. The string section of the HALLE ORCHESTRA are heavily involved on this record.

These boys have been knocking around a long time now… Earned their spurs the hard way.. Plenty of knocks along the way… Tthey got a record deal with Island in the mid nineties i’d say… Recorded an album…. Island got bought up by Universal who decided to streamline….. Universal cleaned house and dropped loads of bands including Elbow…. Island still exist obviously says ye but Universal is the big bossman in the relationship now…. That must have been tough for ELBOW… Record deal….  Yeahhh… Made an album… Yeaahhh…. New owner says bye bye… No more yeahhhs for a while…. So fair play to them for keeping at it.

Lead single from the new record is quite good in my opinion…

Have a listen here…

One of the few attractions down the Marquee this summer for me are Elbow… Isn’t great overall so far again is it,  the Marquee?

Elbow - Little Fictions

I see FUTURE ISLANDS are to play Iveagh Gardens in the summer…. They might be one I could see announced maybe… Fleet foxes are maybe another…. What about the ROSES in the Marquee…. Dreaming i’d say, am i?… These are the types of bands that will have to be attracted to the city if/when the 6,000 seater event centre gets done….

It has become a bit jaded of late I feel… Same aul faces.. Not that there is anything wrong with those faces but nothing to exciting or different to enthuse…. Maybe there is a few nice surprises awaiting us…

Universal (who ended up taking the Elbow boys back via their Fiction label after three independently released albums) also have a nice limited edition of MUMFORD & SONS ‘Live in South Africa’

Chronicling the first meeting of South Africa with its favourite British band, Mumford & Sons, award-winning director Dick Carruthers gets to the very heart of what makes Mumford & Sons such a special act. Filmed live against the beautiful Pretorian outback, the band performs their most recent material and classic hits in front of an exhilarated crowd. Filmed in stunning 4K and presented in DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio and Dolby Atmos. The limited deluxe editions includes ‘Dust And Thunder’, ‘We Wrote This Yesterday’ and a CD with selections from ‘Dust And Thunder’. It is bound in a hardback red leatherette cover with dark gold foil, with a 20-page booklet including exclusive never-before-seen photos printed on uncoated paper.Total Running Time: 94 + 66 + 63 mins approx.

UNIVERSAL also have a 13 CD VANGELIS boxset, some more EMPEROR reissues and some new music by DEEP PURPLE …. New EP out next Friday just on CD entitled ‘Time For Bedlam’..

WARNER (vinyl records)

WARNER for the 3rd have some FRANCOISE HARDY LP reissues and not a whole pile more in my opinion to be honest…
Essential for the third have the new album by LOWER THAN ATLANTIS.

SONY (vinyl records)

SONY have new album by all girl electronic dark pop group MUNA , a reissue of JUDAS PRIEST ‘Turbo’ as a 30th anniversary edition remastered on 3CDs or LP, and vinyl reissues of ALAN PARSONS ‘I Robot’, and STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN’s ‘Texas Flood’.. They also have the new Ministry of Sound trance compilation.

stevierayvaughan

PIAS (vinyl records)

PIAS for the 3rd of Feb have the newest BLACK STAR RIDERS record (Scott Gorham of THIN LIZZY’s newest band) called ‘Heavy Fire’ on a few formats…

CARGO (vinyl records)

CARGO have a new CD by JULIAN COPE out next Friday also called ‘Drunken Songs’ … I think i’d like that, first part anyway…… He wrote this album, I was told, for it to be played at his funeral…. Nothing beats a bit of planning huh… Fail to prepare and all that..

We are teaming up with Universal to offer a pre-order,  promo price on the new RYAN ADAMS  album ‘Prisoner’, which is out February the 17th…. Basically if you get back to me by next Thursday at lunchtime you can get the CD  for just 10 euro or the LP 23 euro… Best prices unless you’re my mam ….. The LP seems to be about 23 sterling or 28 euro elsewhere I looked… A positive step in the right direction regarding pricing…. Without the extra discount this would be 27 euro on the shelf…. So if you want your name on one please let us know….. Sounds mighty fine to me,this track anyway… It’s another break up album i’m told from a reliable source…… OFFER IS ONLY ON PRE ORDERS…. Would you like fries or won tons with that pre order?

Ryan has a stipulation re-entering the promotion …. If you have ever upset Ryan in a Chinese restaurant in Cork and harassed him so much  that he had to eat his Chow Mein on Patricks Street  in the cold night air… Then you are omitted from entry…. Don’t want to lose the sale though so maybe your wife or someone can enter on your behalf…. Like who bothers a fella when he is about to tuck into his grub… I’d get a doggie bag as well… Surprised he came back to Cork at all…
Proper has a new ELIZA CARTHY album with the 12-piece Wayward  Band, plus a 10CD American folk box set including Dylan, Baez and Peter Paul and Mary and a new ROBERT MIZZELL album.

MUSIC ON VINYL (vinyl records)

MUSIC ON VINYL have a few nice reissues for next week including MATTHEW SWEET ‘Girlfriend’, and CAROLE KING’s ‘Living Room Tour’

White Stripes Reissue, Follow THAT Chuck, and The Riptide Movement In-Store Video

Hi Everyone,

Hope ye’r well this week…

I must apologise for a few typos last week …. The time to be outside Pro Musica should have read 5.15… Sorry about that one…
Seriously though …. Did anyone chance them I wonder at about 8 o’clock?

I have not got a telling off yet this week about it… No one probably listened anyway and ye’d probably be right!

Here’s hoping they do a second gig somewhere in the country…

Who knows, they might do a surprise instore in some record shop for record shop day or something to make up for it … Ah the boy who cries wolf…

Stuff (nice stuff) out in the house today includes the last in the series of PINK FLOYD reissues ‘Momentary Lapse Of Reason’, and ‘The Final Cut’…. Think I may have forgot to mention them last week.

Image result for final cut pink floyd

Also in the siopa today are releases by PAUL WELLER, MIKE OLDFIELD, PAIN OF SALVATION, RUN THE JEWELS, EURYTHMICS, GRATEFUL DEAD and MEAT LOAF

Video as usual for those who watch!

Moving on to releases for next week the 27th of Jan… Bit of a slow news week even though the schedule is decent enough for the year…. The ED SHEERAN album should be massive for the music retail sector … Out on the 3rd of March.. We hope to run a preorder competition with a good prize of something bespoke by Mr Sheeran… He is Mr. Sheeran to me now… Out with the Mr. Bonos (might change my mind if you announce a Cork gig like) and in with the Mr Sheerans….. No sticking albums for free onto your phones  without asking(!!) from Mr Sheeran …. Will keep ye posted on the competition.

UNIVERSAL

Sorry…. Small tangent over…. Friday the 27th sees the release of the new TRAINSPOTTING soundtrack.. On CD only for now…. LP is June i think…. Fine looking soundtrack again… THE RUBBERBANDITS have a track on it…… Talk about fitting the bill!

Universal also have ARCADE FIRE ‘Reflector Tapes’ on DVD or BLURAY, CREAM’s ‘Fresh Cream’ on 3CD/BLURAY,  a few more FALL OUT BOY LP reissues and some ALEX HARVEY BAND LP reissues, as well as the marvellous BLUE BREAK BEATS Compilations Volumes One to Three getting the vinyl reissue treatment.

Lastly for next week again via Universal but signed to SPINEFARM records are Killarney natives GREYWIND…. Here’s a quick bio… And a tune…

Greywind’s home of Killarney, Ireland is a beautiful town and a popular tourist destination. For young people passionate about music – like the O’Sullivan siblings Steph (vocals) and Paul (guitar) – it’s a place of limited opportunity. Inspired by the likes of Thrice and Jimmy Eat World, the O’Sullivans would dream of a bigger future: But a dearth of other local musicians meant that their dreams of forming a band never really progressed beyond that. The turning point came following the suicide of their uncle. Grasping the shortness and fragility of life, Steph and Paul decided to forge ahead despite their lack of a conventional band line-up. On an ordinary Wednesday night, the pair polished off the lyrics to their first completed song Afterthoughts and recorded a demo of it the following day. They uploaded it on the Monday and were then immediately deluged by a flood of industry interest. Radio 1 quickly took notice when Daniel P. Carter played the demo and Zane Lowe soon followed suit by picking it as his Next Hype. Within six weeks, Greywind had inked a deal with Raw Power Management and were on their way to record and album with Jason Parry (Don Broco, McFly, Kids In Glass Houses) in Texas. Featuring lyrics which address the dark heart of the human condition, the resulting album possesses the visceral crunch and the soaring hooks of the bands that have so inspired them. Dynamically, however, they move in ways more mysterious than that template would suggest…The album’s continuing rush of highlights suggests a band with years of experience behind them.

PROPER

Proper Music Group have the 10th Anniversary reissue of FRANK TURNER’S debut album ‘Sleep is For The Weak’ as a 2LP or 2CD…  Contains the original album plus 6 tracks of previously unreleased demos with side 4 etched with the FTHC logo.

Image result for frank turner sleep is for the week

Proper also have a JERRY LEE LEWIS compilation album taken from the original analogue tapes pressed on 10“ with 1000 cyan coloured ones only being done…. LEWIS was probably the first wild man of rock n’ roll… Ye probably know the story of when he had to support Chuck Berry at a show one night… Lewis wasn’t happy to be number two on the billing…. So he mixed petrol in with a bottle of coke and as he played his last song he poured the concoction over his piano and set a match to it, whilst legend had it continuing to finish the song as the piano was in a great ball of fire… He left the stage and as he passed Chuck said …. ’Follow THAT Chuck’…. Well rumour has it, it was a racial slur rather than the word Chuck was used…. Lord of the smelly feet would be out of a few dollars today if Lewis was around… He would have being perfect for DJT’s bash today… Definitely american enough i’d say… Ah man… Where are we going?

Proper also have a new JOHN MAYALL album with guest Joe Walsh… LP to arrive late Feb as well as a couple of budget CD releases by STAN GETZ and ELMORE JAMES.

Essential for the 27th have some AMON AMARTH LP reissues…first two albums i think.

SONY

SONY have a reissue of the very first BOB DYLAN Bootleg Series (1 to 3) as a five LP set  on 180 gram with a book… First repress since original press in 1991… We have an original pressing in the shop for 200 yoyos but we will let you out with the new repress for 60 yoyos if you want.

CARGO

Cargo for next week have the new MICHAEL CHAPMAN album ‘50’.

Republic of Music have the BRUNO NICOLAI OST to ‘The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave’ on DEATH WALTZ Records….. Limited and coloured.. They also have DEAF HAVANA’s new album…

I am promised a few visits from lads high enough in their respective record companies (the major ones anyway) in the next 6 to 8 weeks…. They want to tell me how great everything is.. I plan to get a few answers if I can to pricing and to codes or lack of them… If anyone else has any serious bug bearers you would like me to try an address send me a mail….

A good regular lad bought 8 records from us last Saturday to go home and find download codes in only 3 of them… Penalised nearly for supporting physical product and the whole industry…. Download codes should be a given when you buy a record… End of story..

Let me know what to add to my one man crusade folks…

Shellshock have the new MARK EITHEL record out next Friday….I think he is in CYPRESS AVENUE on the 11th of Feb..

This new one is receiving really strong reviews … Bernard Butler’s (Suede) fingerprints are all over it having produced the record and played Guitar, bass and keys on it…. Lovely limited to 500 Vinyl with a 12 track CD of unreleased songs… If i get any that is…

WARNER

Warner have a SEPULTURA 6 CD or 6 LP boxset of their Roadrunner albums on coloured vinyl, plus new ones from KEHLANI and JAPANDROIDS as well ANNIHILATOR 3 CD set and a nice CD Reggae Compilation on VP.Sorry folks I probably kept the biggest release of next week til last … From Pias via Third Man Records is the repress of THE WHITE STRIPE’s ‘Get Behind Me Satan’… As a DLP… PIAS also have a new TY SEGALL…. They also have an Indies only, coloured ‘Live In Paris’ by SLEATER KINNEY, the new KREATOR album on a load of formats as well as GUY CLARK ‘Live from Austin Texas’ on CD/DVD or DLP.

Image result for get behind me satan

Quiet enough on the local scene at the moment… But as promised, we now have the Riptide Movement in-store from late last year up on the website for your viewing pleasure! Another cracker of an in-store.. Thanks again to Tim our video guru, to the band, and to everyone who came in and made it a great day in the shop.. Relive it here!

Video lovers, Bobby is back this week! Check it out here!

Do ye know the way I am always trying to tease , torment , cajole and gently ease the Johnny Cash from ye’r pockets? ( I hope i do it in a friendly and professional manner though if that’s any consolation).. Well I also hope that an odd time I point ye in a direction ye may not otherwise have seen.

Of course, I am always saying, that’s good and this is good and the other is good as well… All completely a matter of taste… Who the hell am I or anyone else for that matter to tell anyone what they should like… I’m trying to sell stuff (that’s my job) but i do shout a bit louder if I really (personally) like something.

Block your ears cause you know what’s coming…

I heard a record during the week that completely stopped me in my tracks…. I can’t remember the last time it happened to me….Not for a few years…. Was it just my mood at the time?….. I happened to listen to it whilst I exercised which I hadn’t done for about six months so maybe it was the long lost endorphins talking… Did the music just resonate with me personally? (It was stuff i’d like, indie rock n roll, dash of psych, hint of punk, guitars, keys, synths and strings all in use…) But it stopped me… Totally… I thought it was fantastic from the opening chord to the last chord and every bit in between.

7 days ago, the truth be told I did not know who this band were…. Now ye guys have to block ye’r ears I am shouting so loud….

After my first full listen to the album I got off my exercise bike and stood and clapped (endorphin buzz surely?)… A one man standing ovation…. Bravo, chapo, comhghairdeas…. Well fecking done gentlemen that was excellent.

Bobby will find a link for ye to listen to the record….Vinyl I hope will be with us very soon (that’s the cunning , cajoling bit done)

Take a listen to it here! : https://windings.bandcamp.com/album/be-honest-and-fear-not

The band are from Limerick and their name is WINDINGS.. The record is called ‘Be Honest and Fear Not’… I personally think it is one of the best Irish records I have heard in quite a while and one of the best records of the year for me.

behonest

Ok…. You can unblock your ears a bit…

If BT can do it so can we… Only taking the piss… Ye knew that didn’t ye?

Sony also has a LOU REED Boxset .. The CD set is 17 discs with an 80 page book, 5 prints and a poster,  or there is a six LP SET… I think the LP is pushed back till November now… Will be on high fidelity vinyl with a 30 page book… Albums on it are ‘BERLIN’, ‘TRANSFORMER’, ‘CONEY ISLAND BABY’, ‘ROCK N ROLL ANIMAL’, ‘THE BLUE MASK’ and ‘STREET HASSLE’..  Sony lastly have a STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN ‘Essential Collection’ on Vinyl..

On the kinda local scene, MALOJIAN release their third album next week… ‘This Is Nowhere’ is the title.. This record is being put out by the guys in Rollercoaster Records in Kilkenny.. We have Malojian’s record on CD in the shop and it’s a fine listen.. The new tunes here sounds great as well…

Last bit of news, great news really… The boy Flannery has agreed again to do an instore around the launch of his new album… New song is a belter… Edgy, rocking and pure class.. Mick has always supported us.. Will fill in next week with the dates.. Think it’s Friday October 21st at IPM.. Will confirm next week… So thanks Mick, again… Hopefully I won’t send anymore late night well oiled texts of thanks your way… Sorry about that…Could be worse, could be sending the drunken texts to women… Anyway, before I get into more trouble i’m off..

ZEPPELIN, NICK AND MY FRIENDS IN THE AIR!

Hi Everyone,

Hope ye are all well this evening…

Thanks to those who read this …I appreciate it…I do put a bit of time into it…late on a Thursday evening usually…between 2 to 3 hours a week normally to do a bit of research and write it so sound to those who read it.

Here’s a link to our vlog if you’d prefer…

Firstly, this week loads of goodies in the shop today…bit of a feast to be honest…bad for your pocket but good for your soul…listened a lot to the jingly jangly pop brilliance of the Teenage Fanclub…it’s poptabulous…the new Wilco…Schmilco is a fine listen as well and the new Nick Cave has been played all day today…I can safely say all three will be played again in 12 months time…really good…

the Nick Cave is really really dark and melancholy, there is a kind of whirling, looping drone through the record that is so melancholy and intoxicating…one track has a single piano note every 15 seconds…one note only but it gives an eerie feel to it…I played it 5 or 6 times today but didn’t study it…it’s on in the background (I’m not really listening to it intently) and I am not going to try and dissect meanings from the great man’s pen…not yet anyway (until a proper listen) but the opening track is called ‘Jesus Alone’, and the album opens with the line. ‘He fell from the skies’…ah man…I could be wrong but I think 3 fine albums have been released today…the Nick one could be an all time classic given time…it’s early days for me with it but it’s powerful, interesting stuff.

nick-cave-the-bad-seeds-skeleton-tree      wilco-schmilco         teenage-fanclub-here

Right, more out today are some great Neil Young reissues, the acoustic double album, Jack White, a live ZZ Top record, some Faith No More reissues, New Order singles collection on 4LP boxset, new record by Bastille (must listen tomorrow…could be another beaut), Verve reissue, Ramones boxset, new Okkervil River record, new one by D.A.R.K….so loads of new stuff in the man cave for the weekend…quality stuff a lot of it…

Right, moving on to arrivals in same man cave for next Friday the 16th of September (no disrespect in any shape, form or way to ye ladies with great taste who buy records or C.Ds from us…lady cave just ain’t got the same ring to it)…I better get out while the goings good…

Right, next week the biggie is definitely the Zeppelin BBC CD, LP set or super deluxe CD/LP set…a fine collection…thanks (big time) to those of you who were interested and pre-ordered from us (rather than elsewhere…go raibh maith agaibh)…Swansong/Atlantic/Warner being the providers of this beaut…the vinyl of the new Christine and the Queens reissued through Warner also for next Friday, LP also includes a copy of the CD which is a nice touch.

led-zep-bbc                                  led-zep-bbc-cd                                          led-zep-bbc-super

PIAS

PIAS have the new album by PREOCCUPATIONS ( well, I suppose it’s their debut album…the same four lads from Canada were VIETCONG but changed their name to the aforementioned)…the first album was good, so looking forward to hearing the new one…there is an indies only coloured vinyl with this one…as for the name change, it was causing offence and promoters were getting grief over it also, and the band were losing shows over it as well…the lads from the band said basically and honestly that they were young and ignorant to the ramifications of the name…not too many bands out there with names of terrorist organisations to be fair….storm in a teacup or a real problem…that’s for everyone to have their opinion on…Christ why am I still writing about it..Enough said Raymond…Shane thinks it was a bit of punk rock, they should’ve kept it…new record next week, CD and Ltd LP.

PIAS also have the score to the TV series NARCOS on black and red swirly ice pop flavoured vinyl (sorry, three words in that description are not true…I got a bit carried away again)

I’m lucky to be here (last story I promise/I hope about this/ I thought my head was going to explode on Tuesday)…EIR were back or should we call them Freddy…man, they are a nightmare…because I closed a contract and opened a huge new contract…I had no package with eir so I had agreed a new package with them last week…watch your costs…watch your costs type thing which entailed them sending sending some some dude out to install a new broadband modem…all cool…eh..no…he left and the next day the phone line was dead…I am not over exaggerating too much when I say this but when the realisation hit me that my phone was not working…terror, fear and bile rose in my stomach…I had to ring EIR…man…it is torture…9 minutes on hold…the line goes dead…try again, 9 minutes before I speak to someone…he puts me on hold…another 7 minutes, he is back and wants to transfer me …I’m getting full at this stage so I ask him nicely is there any way he can call me back rather than me waiting…I am the customer I think?…eh no he replys…I say why not…Gareth tells me he is too busy…I kid you not…he is too busy to call me, the customer back…pop…head explosion…nop raised voice but a right asshole I turned into for a good minute…a right asshole…I’d say Gareth wished he’d said grand I’ll ring you back…

I spoke to 40 Gareths over the past month in EIR and pop…it happened…I thought I was out you see but you know what’s coming, they kept pulling me back in…Anyway a long story short and an even longer 38 minutes (in total), I was told there was a fault with the line and they would sort it but it would take 3 working days…to get a dude back out…brilliant..brilliant guys…I knew that 40 minutes ago…

Anyway, hopefully that’s the end of that sceal once and for all…back to the tunes…

Essential for the 16th have new albums by Seth LAKEMAN, HANDSOME FAMILY and DEAD VALLY.

PROPER

PROPER have a new album by Ian Hunter (MOTT THE HOOPLE)

Music On Vinyl

Music On Vinyl have a few nice ones including DREAM THEATRE …2 and a half hours live from Paris…4 LP set…2000 copies on blue marbled ice pop flavoured vinyl…

MOV also have SUICIDE SQUAD OST on LP, NAS ‘I Am’ LP and MOVE ‘Looking On’ featuring Jeff Lynne.

UNIVERSAL

Universal have new albums by ALANA GEORGE, MADELINE PEYROUX, SHAKIN STEVENS, the new BRIDGET JONES DIARY…quick side bar…was top of the charts in 2001 when the baby opened…I remember asking a colleague and friend of mine before I opened the shop…how many of that Bridget Jones soundtrack should I get in…25 she said…you’ll definitely sell 25 she said…she was right…a long time ago now…amazing how little things can stick in your mind .

Universal also have an ENIGMA Best Of CD reissue, EMINEM ‘Curtain Call’ 2LP reissue and PETER GABRIEL Live DVD.

SONY

Sony have a new WILLIE NELSON album – a tribute to Ray Price, and a new USHER CD.

On the local scene, The Sunshine Factory were in performing in the shop last Saturday at 1pm. Really good sound…Velvet Undergroundy…Brian Jonestown Massacre vibes…EP out in January/February.

Sin é for this week folks,

Thanks for listening,

Ray.

SAVAGE SEPTEMBER BEGINS, BLISSFULLY GOTH, AND THE RETURN OF THE RANTS

Hi Everyone..

How’s the form?..

So firstly are the releases out this week in the shop which include the latest two titles in the PINK FLOYD reissue series, ‘The Wall’ and ‘The Division Bell’.. Image result for blur leisure

Roll up, roll up… September is here… The bleak winter is over and the summer for records start.. Savage September i’m calling it! Starts slowly maybe… Only maybe.. Loads of tempting stuff all the same for next week..

UNIVERSAL

If you don’t know it, check it out.. Dark, dreary.. I know I probably have had about 90 albums in my top ten.. Look, it’s a big top ten.. Great album..) Other reissues from THE CURE include ‘Pornography’, ‘Faith’, ‘Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me’, ‘Seventeen Seconds’, ‘Three Imaginary Boys’, and ‘The Top’. Also reissued is the side project THE GLOVE’S ‘Blue Sunshine’ with Robert Smith and Siouxsie’s Steve Severin… Blissfully melancholy goth.. All of them..

BLONDIE has a picture disc release of ‘Plastic Letters’ and there is also someULTRAVOX LP reissues from Universal next week..

SONY

Sony for next week, the 2nd of September have the 4th and 5th PEARL JAMrecords, ‘No Code’ and ‘Yield’.. Pushed back from about 6 weeks back, plus new albums from IZZY BIZU and WARD THOMAS, as well as some 5CD Sets from ROGER MCGUINN, and EXODUS among others..

WARNER

Warner for next week the 2nd of September mainly have some nice Rhino vinyl Greatest Hits reissues from ARETHA FRANKLIN, CHICAGO, CHIC, LITTLE FEATand WARREN ZEVON, as well as a nice budget priced Country CD collection..

So, we are two weeks in the new gaff.. 95% srted there now.. Few bits to get finished, but no mad rush on them… Starting to settle in now, stressful few weeks or months really to be honest… The moving the stuff (the parts of the move we could control) were fine.. Hard work, and time required mainly..

But man, the stuff we did not control fully were torture at times… I must have spoke to EIR 1800601701 at least 50 times over the last month… I should have kept a diary.. Every phone call seemed to last at least 15 minutes, and I kid you not, I reckon I spoke to them 40/50 times in the last month…

You see I own a huge telecommunications company as well as the record shop empire, and I needed to transfer all that as well… I do in my liathroidí.. I simply (well, wrong choice of word from me), wanted to close the account for the phone and broadband in Douglas Court, and open one in Douglas Village… I did, however, throw a huge curve ball at Eir… I wanted to keep the number 0214895500.. I kid you not, each call was like somebody was plucking hairs individually from my skin… I won’t bore with the details.. It was truly torture.. Last piece of the puzzle today was getting a new package in the new shop.. 35 minutes on the phone for my name, address, business reg number, bank account number, sort code, email…. I think that was it… 35 minutes… Holy sh*te you can only laugh and ask the girl at the end why do you not just email me the form.. I know they are making money from one sitting on the other end of the phone, but christ, I would have paid them the 10 Euro upfront to not have to go through the torture sessions… Do they realise at the top of the food chain how inept they are, or do they not give a sh*te?…

A lot of ye know I have had great love for big corporations and banks so we can add Eir and the ESB to my list of lovers… Last Thursday, 6 days open, I had a visit from Khal Drogo himself, whom I didn’t realise moonlights as an ESB networks enforcer..

Drogo told me he had to put out my lights… I said why?… Drogo said there was no name on the unit.. I said I was only in the unit a few days and had a meter reading from when I took it over, but just hadn’t got around to putting my name on it.. ‘DO IT NOW’, said Drogo, or lights out.. So I did, rang Bord Gais Energy, got my name on the unit.. Jumped through their hoops as Drogo stared at me telling me he had 14 minutes to do this call… Job done…

Job was done.. Drogo spoke to Bord Gais to get the nod not to put my lights out. Everyone happy families… Fast forward to Monday… 1:15PM.. BANG.. Power gone.. Trip switch?… No, not that…Pink Panther concluded through CCTV footage that Drogo was back.. Went to the supply room and hit the switch… Lights out… Why?… My name from the previous Thursday had not gone through the system yet so there was still no name on the unit… No power for 4 hours… No apologies.. True story.. He came Thursday, was told it was okay, came back Monday and shut me down without even asking.. Can you believe that?.. What a country sometimes… He spent an hour of his day doing something completely unnecessary and uncalled for… Oooh Christ I dunno…

Sorry, ranting over.. Blood pressure tablets taken.. Back to the tunes!

PIAS

PIAS for the 2nd of September have the new album from NEIL HANNON and THE DIVINE COMEDY, called ‘Foreverland’, on 2CD, CD or LP… PIAS also have the third album by ANGEL OLSEN on Jarjaruwar, on Purple vinyl for indie retailers like us! Talented lass..

BIG INSTORE ANNOUNCEMENT, NEW LED ZEPPELIN, AND THE HOPEFUL END OF THE SUMMER RELEASE DROUGHT

Hey everyone,

How’s it going?… Hope ye’r all well.. Stop me ooh ho ooh stop me, stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before…

Summertime and the releases are iffy… Third year in a row I think i’ve churned that one out… Tis a bit true for this coming Friday (July 29th), again i’m afraid, but improving in August.. Well that’s my weather forecast anyway..

Releases in the shop for July 22nd include THE ALLMAN BROTEHRS, BEARS DEN, OPETH, PARADISE LOST, CARCASS, IGGY/BOWIE, CLIFF MARTINEZ amongst others.

For those who prefer the video, here you are! And be sure to hit that subscribe button, and give the video a like!

MUSIC ON VINYL

Moving on to the 29th of July.. Music On Vinyl have a few nice ones that day including the debut by the INDIGO GIRLS, DEREK TRUCKS BAND ‘Joyful Noise’, and STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN’S ‘In Step’ LP.. For the younger reader who may not have heard of SRV.. He was one of the best blues / electric guitarists ever.. He died in a helicopter crash in 1990, with three of Clapton’s close circle at the time… It is rumored that Clapton was due to be the 4th passenger in the helicopter that day, but boarded a different one at the last minute… And Vaughan boarded the ill-fated one… When your luck’s out, your luck’s out… Or in for that matter..

SONY

Sony for the 29th of July have the debut album by NAO… Rising English soul, funk, and R&B star…

Essential for the 29th of July have the reissue of the JOHN PRINE classic duets album ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’, with all female singers like EMMYLOU, IRIS DEMENT and LUCINDA WILLIAMS.. This one is available as a double vinyl..

Essential also have the new POWERWOLF live album on CD/DVD or DVD/LP..

I’m not so sure you guys have much interest in the mechanics of the small music retail industry in this wee island of ours.. Well i’ll keep you filled anyway, whether ye have interest or not.. (No need to thank me..). The latest news is that Golden Discs (my old employer) are taking over supplying Tesco with their home entertainment products.. CD and DVD mainly… Some games I suppose.. Tesco are in a court battle with their last supplier (a Dublin based wholesaler) for fraudulent trading.. Excuse me if I have told you this before, I can’t remember.. The old supplier claims that Tesco falsified over 16,000 invoices over 7 or 8 years.. The lawsuit is for 3.5 million…

Now Golden Discs are taking on the task of supplying them.. (As ye know, I wish only well on Golden Discs, they were always good to me, good to work for and I always hope there is room for both of us).. Golden Discs have 13 stores nationwide now… So they are jumping from that to now supplying 93 stores (80 Tescos)… That’s a big change in any company I would have thought.. I suppose for Golden Discs it’s a bit of a case of can’t beat them, join them… And if it works for them it could be very worthwhile (which I genuinely hope it does, once it doesn’t affect me!)..

But from what’s on the grapevine.. Tesco ain’t interested in any participation except at the point of sale.. Basically they give Golden Discs the space and let them do what they want with stocking, racking, merchandising, returns, faulties, theft, overstocks…. Tesco don’t want to know… We give ye the space, and we take a margin at the till… So Golden Disc by one CD from Warner.. Put an RRP on it… Put it into Tesco… Golden Disc pay Warner… Tesco sell it (whenever and after Golden Disc have employed someone to put it in to the Tesco Shop), and Golden Disc make EUR1 a unit type of thing… I dunno… I have no idea of the numbers, i’m only guessing but what I do know is that it is a big undertaking and that Golden Discs will need a good team of people to do it right for them… Time will tell how it will all play out I suppose…

WARNER

Big news as Warner have a new ZEPPELIN release just announced for September… The Complete BBC Sessions.. Here’s the sales note from Warner!

Nearly 20 years ago, Led Zeppelin introduced BBC Sessions, an acclaimed two-disc set of live recordings selected from the band’s appearances on BBC radio between 1969 and 1971. Later this year, the band will unveil THE COMPLETE BBC SESSIONS, an updated version of the collection that’s been newly remastered with supervision by Jimmy Page and expanded with eight unreleased BBC recordings, including three rescued from a previously “lost” session from 1969.

BBC Sessions was originally released in 1997 and has been certified double platinum by the RIAA. THE COMPLETE BBC SESSIONS builds on that collection with a third disc that boasts eight unreleased performances, plus “White Summer,” a recording that first surfaced in 1990 on the Led Zeppelin Boxed Set. In addition, the set includes extensive session-by-session liner notes written by Dave Lewis. For the first time ever, it provides accurate details and notes about all of the band’s BBC sessions.

Musical highlights on this new collection include the debut of a long-lost radio session that has achieved near-mythic status among fans. Originally broadcast in April 1969, the session included three songs: “I Can’t Quit You Baby,” “You Shook Me,” and the only recorded performance of “Sunshine Woman.”

Also included are two unreleased versions of both “Communication Breakdown” and “What Is And What Should Never Be.” Separated by two years, the performances vividly demonstrate the young band’s rapid evolution over a short period of time.

Jimmy Page spoke about the band’s growth in an interview with Guitar World: “The BBC Sessions show in graphic detail just how organic the group was. Led Zeppelin was a band that would change things around substantially each time it played…We were becoming tighter and tighter, to the point of telepathy.”

Speaking with Wall of Sound, John Paul Jones added: “We’d been on the road a lot by the time those sessions were recorded. The albums were always the starting point of the music, and then we’d take it out and expand it on the road. Then we’d come straight off the road into those BBC studios.”

Recalling the BBC experience in an interview with Mojo, Robert Plant said: “The whole thing was very quaint: the politeness of the audience, the technicians fumbling about, proper hallowed low-key introductions. Like there was some sort of holy moment about to occur.”

Great news for the shop with the confirmation of an instore by the excellent Dublin based group ALL TVVINS, who have just supported Foals at Live at the Marquee.. Thursday, August 12th at 5PM… More on that also in the coming weeks!

Their debut album is due out that day, August 12th.. Some cracking tunes on it from what i’ve heard… Here’s the Warner promotion for it again! :

After a succession of huge radio singles which have inspired glowing comparisons with the likes of Bloc Party, New Order, Haim, Chvrches and The Killers, ALL TVVINS are set to release their debut album ‘IIVV’ on August 12th on Warner Bros. Throughout ‘IIVV’, the Irish duo counterpoint angular post-punk riffs with insistent energy, strident hooks and swathes of synths to create an unconventional blend of the anthemic and the unconventional. All of their singles to date feature on the album: ‘Darkest Ocean’ which has accumulated 3 million plays online; the striking debut ‘Thank You’ which was nominated for Irish Song of the Year at the Choice Music Prize; the dramatic and intense ‘Too Young To Live’; and the recent track massive radio hit ‘Resurrect Me’

BIFFY CLYRO’S VERY LIMITED SPECIAL DEAL, A BIT LESS RANTING, AND A DAY OF HEADBANGING INSTORE

Hey everyone,

Hope all is well!

Bobby here again to bring you all the new releases in the world of vinyl and music for next Friday, July 8th.

First up, new releases in the shop this week include BAT FOR LASHES, MAXWELL, OF MICE AND MEN, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, THE ROLLING STONES, SIMPLE MINDS, CREAM, THE POLICE, and PAIN OF SALVATION..

There are a few nice bits out next week!

WARNER

We’ll start with probably the biggest release, which is the seventh studio record from Kilmarnock’s finest BIFFY CLYRO, entitled ‘Ellipsis’, out through Warner.. Now, many of ye probably know that I am a slight bit Biffy mad.. Well, totally Biffy mad.. So it’s a fitting week for me to be doing the newsletter!

This LP marks the start of a new era for the band, with the first three records showcasing the weird, math style metal that the band started with, and the second three records becoming the ‘epic’ rock records, filled with orchestras and mariachi bands.. While they have stripped back to the ‘bare essentials’, from what I have heard of the new record, it is a combination of both styles. It contains the heavy, riffy, weirdness of the first three albums, while mixing in the huge catchyness of the later three. Check out the single ‘Animal Style’ below, if you like guitar riffs, it should be one for you! (And at the end of the video they smash their gear, must have took Ray’s advice in the debate from a few weeks back!). One of the best rock songs of the last few years in my opinion. But different strokes for different folks as they say!

We will be getting the extremely limited clear Indie only vinyl of ‘Ellipsis’, with only 1000 being sent out worldwide.. On top of this, the kind folk at Warner have also included the ‘Wolves of Winter’ 7’’ single for every clear vinyl bought as a FREEBIE.. This 7’’ once again is extremely limited, and has only seen the light of day through a special deluxe box set which was exclusive to the band’s website, so it is a nice one! (Although, I think in the UK only HMV have got an exclusive of it, but it’s £8 without shipping.. Ohh the great beasts in the sky.. Sorry Ray, I had to!)..

Because this is so limited (we hopefully will get around 20), we will be taking names, with it being first come first served! So if you’re interested pop us a mail and we’ll stick your name down!

Also out from Warner next week for July 8th is the GONE IS GONE self titled debut LP.. Gone is Gone is a supergroup consisting of Troy Sanders, the singer and bass player from Mastodon, Troy Van Leeuwen, one of the guitarists for Queens of the Stone Age, Tony Hajjar, the drummer for At the Drive-In, and Mike Zarin, so looking forward to this one! Between this and Biffy it’s gonna be a head banging day in the shop next Friday! Also out from Warner for July 8th is three more BOWIE CD reissues, Earthling, Hours and Outside, which were previously done through Sony but have been difficult to get more recently..

The next of the PRINCE reissues is also out through Warner next week, with ‘Around The World In A Day’, which was Prince’s 7th studio album from 1985. Finally for Warner for July 8th is a deluxe reissue of K.D LANG’s third album from 1989, entitled ‘Absolute Torch and Twang’, which comes on LP with a lyric insert and a bonus 7” single which contains “Our Day Will Come” (K.D. Lang with Take 6) and “Three Cigarettes In An Ashtray” (K.D. Lang Live from BBC). The album hasn’t been out on vinyl for 25 years.

UNIVERSAL

Not too much happening for Universal for July 8th. Their biggest release is the new album by ABC, ‘Lexicon of Love II’, which makes its vinyl debut after the CD was released a few weeks back, to great reviews. It only took 34 years since the release of the first ‘Lexicon of Love’ which stormed the 80s, and features 10 new tracks penned by Martin Fry! All you need is love!

Uni also have a couple of EMINEM reissues out on vinyl, including ‘The Slim Shady LP’, ‘The Marshall Mathers LP’, ‘The Eminem Show’, ‘Relapse’, ‘Recovery’, ‘Curtain Call’, and ‘Encore’. Most of these were near to impossible to get before this, and may never have been printed before, besides from the boxset which they released about 18 months ago. Uni also have the new LAWSON CD, entitled ‘Perspective’.

SONY

Sony for July 8th have some new series of artist’s greatest hits on vinyl, entitled ‘The Essential’. Some of ye might be aware of the series because they’ve had them on CD for the last few years, but this is the first time they will be printed on vinyl. I remember one of my first ever CDs that I bought with my pocket money was Bob Dylan’s ‘The Essential’ a good few years ago now.. For about a year I never turned off CD 1 because I thought it was the best thing ever.. I have since listened to CD 2, it is equally as good!

So in this series, next Friday we will have ELVIS PRESLEY ‘The Essential’, BOB DYLAN‘The Essential’, and JOHNNY CASH ‘The Essential’, all on vinyl!

PIAS

A good few nice bits out next week from PIAS. First up is ‘Take Up Her Monto’, the highly anticipated follow up to last year’s Mercury Prize nominated ‘Hairless Toys’ from Ireland’s own ROISÍN MURPHY. I really enjoyed the last record, great electronic feel to it, with a great beat, which normally wouldn’t be my thing. Also caught some of her set at Glastonbury last weekend and looked like one of the highlights, a great performer. So looking forward to this one!

More electronic goodness from PIAS for next Friday includes THE AVALANCHES second studio LP, entitled ‘Wildflower’. The album has been in production since 2005, and is the group’s first album in almost 16 years.. Is Axl Rose a member?.. In all fairness, there is 21 tracks on this album, and features plenty of collaborations, including tracks with WARREN ELLIS, and FATHER JOHN MISTY. And the lead single is called ‘Frankie Sinatra’. It wins my vote over Democracy.. Sorry Axl! It is available as a DLP.

DEAD CAN DANCE, which is a duo consisting of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard have a couple of vinyl represses from PIAS next Friday, July 8th. These include their debut self titled album, their second album ‘Spleen and Ideal’, and their sixth album ‘Into The Labyrinth’. ALEX SOMMES (Sigur Ros) has ‘Music From The Film Captain Fantastic’ also out through PIAS, this one on coloured vinyl and is housed in a handmade bespoke gatefold sleeve with rounded edges complete with digital download card.

PIAS also have a 12’’ reissue of MODEST MOUSE / 764 HERO’s ‘Whenever You See Fit’, on limited, coloured vinyl. Probably Seattle’s best outing at the time, a classic.. And finally through PIAS is the new APHEX TWIN EP, entitled ‘Cheetah’, which uses digital sound generation techniques combined with wave sequencing technology to bring you sounds with movement and depth rarely found on records today. (Thanks PIAS notes!).

And finally, Essential for the 8th of July have some JOHN PRINE CD reissues, including ‘Aimless Love’, ‘Lost Dogs / Mixed Blessings’, ‘Live on Tour’, ‘In Person, On Stage’, and ‘’The Singing Mailman Delivers’..

So, as ye know, the Bossman is back to the shop early next week. I hope ye all have enjoyed your short break from rants as much as he has enjoyed his holidays..

Hope you have enjoyed the last two newsletters! I’ll have to do another one sometime soon, when I come up with something to rant about, but until then…

Stay classy,

Bobby

DON’T BLINK OR YOU’LL MISS THE UFO’S, THE YOUTH TAKES OVER, AND CLASSIC RECORDS CUT AT HALF SPEED

Hey Everyone,

How’s the form?

Short and sweet from me this week but Bobby will add in his own younger better looking slant on it for a bit this week, and fully next week.. (And hopefully add in his performance video from his music course final exam also)..

Firstly, thanks to everyone for the kind wishes about the move…. I will keep ye abreast of our comings and goings when I get back from the sunny south east coastline…

Releases for the shop today include THE TRAVELLING WILBURYS, BAD COMPANY,DEEP PURPLE, ALT J, MOVE, LITTLE FEAT, STAR WARS (JOHN WILLIAMS)

Or for those who perfer the video, here you are :

So on to releases for the 1st of July.. Small calm after the storm, but still a few nice bits happening this month..

WARNER

Warner for the 1st of July have BLINK 182’s new record ‘California’, on CD/LP and limited indie only silver vinyl with code… The punk popes’ 7th album since 1992 I think… The band now have Matt Skiba (of Alkaline Trio) as singer after replacing Tom DeLonge from the group..Quick Bobby input : Tom came out during the week announcing his reason for leaving the group was to hunt UFO’s… Interesting to say the least.. Taking the newsletters ‘big beast in the sky’ recurrence to a whole new level! Who said rock n’ roll is dead?

Warner also have the new BAT FOR LASHES record again on a limited indie only pink vinyl for 5,000 copies worldwide (a double LP in fact) and CD and standard double LP.. ‘The Bride’ is a concept album by Bat For Lashes which follows the story of a woman whose fíancee has been killed in a crash on the way to the church for their wedding… (Must have nicked that idea from Morrissey somewhere along the way).

Warner also have a 3CD ERIC CLAPTON + GUESTS ‘Crossroads Revisited’, as well as some METRONOMY reissues on LP and a limited MUDDY WATERS Live LP, entitled ‘Hoochie Coochie Man – Live At The Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz Club’ on DLP.. This was meant to be released for RSD but it did not get out of the pressing plant in time…. But here it is now…

Now I pass the reigns to Bobby for his mini State of The Nation address this week, as well as the rest of the new releases for July 1st… Thanks all, see ye when i’m back please god..

Hey everyone! Due to the huge success of my brilliant vinyl video last week, we have decided it is time for me to take charge for a week or two, and try entertain ye with some fresh rambling! In the words of Planty, Ramble On!

We’ll crack straight into it!

UNIVERSAL

First up for release for the 1st of July from Universal is the come back single ‘All For One’ by the mighty Stone Roses! Unfortunately it is a 1 track, 1 sided 7’’ with no B-Side, as is gonna cost 12EUR.. Bit sharp for a 1 track 7’’.. Who knows, maybe Mani is saving up for some UFO hunting kits..

Universal also have a new CD from sensational violinist NICOLA BENEDETTI, entitled ‘Shostakovich Violin Concerto No.1, Glazunov Violin Concerto’, as well as 6 CLASSIC albums reissued on LP, mastered at half speed for ultimate sound quality, including theROLLING STONES ‘Exile on Main Street’, CREAM’S ‘Disraeli Gears’, JOHN MARTYN’s‘Solid Air’, SIMPLE MINDS’ ‘New Gold Dream’, and finally THE POLICE ‘Ghost In The Machine’. All were cut by legendary engineer Miles Showell, of Abbey Road Studios.

Also out from Universal for July 1st is the new LP from grammy winning SNARKY PUPPY, entitled ‘Culcha Vulcha’, their first in two years..  If you haven’t heard these guys, well worth checking out! Hard to pin point a genre to them, ranging in everything from rock, R&B, funk, soul, jazz, bossa nova, and most importantly played by a band who you can tell absolutely love what they do! Had the pleasure myself of getting to see their keys and hammond organ player Cory Henry in Cyprus Avenue in May, and was completely blown away! He played alone with a drummer, on a day that happened to be Stevie Wonder’s birthday.. A special night! Have never seen a musician on that caliber before!

SONY

Sony for the 1st of July have a new album from MAXWELL, another R&B, Soulful type grammy winner. The album entitled ‘blackSUMMER’S Night’ is out on LP and CD. Prog Metal band FATES WARNING have a new album out through Sony as well for next Friday, called ‘Theories of Flight’, their twelfth record.. The video for the lead single ‘White Flag’ is an interesting one.. A close up, guitar playthrough video, with the band’s three guitarists just shot in one go playing the song.. The guitar nerd in me loves it, but can’t see MTV jumping on the bandwagon.. Surely the band saved a bit of money this way. Fair play. Maybe they’re saving for UFO hunting gear too..

Also out from Sony is another (yes, another!) couple of E.L.O reissues, of ‘Face the Music’ and ‘Time’, both on LP.. And finally from Sony is Swedish hard rock / metal group Pain Of Salvation, with ‘Remedy Lane : Revisited’, the remixed and relived take on the album will be on 2CD Digipack, and 2LP, which includes a new sonic take on the original LP, and a live album from a 2014 show.

PIAS

Next up is PIAS, with not much happening for the 1st of July after their mammoth release of Radiohead last week.. Biggest release for them is the new SARA WATKINS LP, entitled ‘Young in all The Wrong Ways’. Watkins is most known for her role as fiddle player in the bluegrass group Nickel Creek, but has now ventured solo with the new LP being her third solo record.. ‘Young in all The Wrong Ways’ could be a nice title for this new, fresh newsletter?..

PROPER

Proper for July 1st have a new CRADLE OF FILTH reissue, with 2011’s mini album ‘Evermore Darkly’ making its first appearance on the vinyl format.

And finally on the new release front for this week is the reissue of American alternative rock group NADA SURF’s fourth record from 2005, entitled ‘The Weight Is A Gift’.. This one is done by City Slang, through Republic of Music.

As Ray asked earlier, I better include the video from my final year performance with UCC Music.. The gig took place in the middle of May this year in Cyprus Avenue, with the theme of my performance being a dedication to Fender guitars, as the company celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. With that I attempted to showcase a chronological performance through the decades of guitarists who have used the Fender in a unique way to obtain their own unique sound, becoming icons of the Stratocaster. Starting with the ‘pure’ clean blues tone of Hank Marvin and the Shadows, moving right through to the thick, heavy distortion of Biffy Clyro’s metal influence, it is a collection of songs from the icons who have inspired me to play guitar myself! So if you have a spare half an hour some evening, here it is!

Hopefully I haven’t missed anything! (Sorry Ray if I have!)

Radiohead, Rants and the return of the Roses

Hey everyone,
Hows the form…
Releases in the shop for today include CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, SANTANA, METALLICA, EAGULLS,GRAND MAGUS, FOY VANCE, RUFUS WAINWRIGHT and BIRDY.
Right so, on to next Friday, the 20th of May… where do I start though, quite a few of note…

SONY

Sony gets the nod to start for the 20th of May. Dylan’s new album is out next Friday entitled “Fallen Angels”, another covers album, the first record really divided people, some saying it was as good as anything Dylan has ever done, others thinking it was pure tripe.. I’m praying to sit on the fence somewhere firmly in between both views… I thought it was a nicely produced, easy listening album, well arranged and for me, vocally quite nice… not great but not shite either. Bob has sold over 125 million records now… savage like… but I do wish he was writing his own songs and not doing these covers stuff. Must have a touch of writers block… can happen to the worst of us!

Story goes (probably not true at all), when Bono met Bob for the first time, Bono questioned Bob on his apparent ease with penning songs… Bono – “they say you can write a song anywhere, at any time, at the drop of a hat??”… Dylan – “Yeah, that’s about right”… Bono – “can you write a song now?” Dylan writes some lines on a napkin and shows Bono… Bono- “wow that’s unreal, can I have it?”… Dylan – “no, write your own songs”. As I said, probably not true at all.

manicsbox

Sony also have the brilliant MANIC STREET PREACHERS fourth album… commercially massive album… “Everything Must Go” on a deluxe reissue boxset  as well as CD and standard LP. A cracking album in my opinion aside from the huge hits on it, some gems like “small black flowers” and the brilliant “all surface but no feeling”… in fact every track is strong on it… just like the new FRANKS album… its brilliant… not a weak song… really, really good… in case I didn’t tell ye already.

Sony also have the ADAM AND THE ANTS reissue of 1980’s “Kings of the Wild Frontier” on a fancy super dooper boxy thingy… I was a tad young for this at the time, only 6… but seems to be a lot of interest so I must have a proper listen.
Sony also have the new CHRISTY MOORE CD, his 25th solo album, “Lily”… lovely name… eh hem… same as the smallest… Christy wrote some of the songs on this one as well as songs written by Peter Gabriel, Declan O’Rourke and our own John Spillane.

Lastly from Sony is a new HIGHWAYMEN live one called “American Outlaws Live”… Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson. Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings… four fine lads lads I’d say would make Christy look like an altar boy even in his heyday… this one is a 4CD set.

PIAS

Pias have a GRATEFUL DEAD tribute album created and curated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the National… it’s a celebration of the DEAD’s music over 6 hours and 59 tracks… CD only

Essential have the new RICHARD ASHCROFT album on CD and double vinyl record as well as the new SATYRICON CD and LP, “Nemesis Divina”.

I had to rush purchase the indies only, one press only, really, really limited RADIOHEAD vinyl on Monday last… I ordered a few… quite a few, but have been told by the rep to stop taking names at 10… that he would try and get me more than 10, but 10 was all he thought I would get… at this point 8  customers have contacted me about the record (the white version), so only 2 more kinda guaranteed to get them… if you want to throw your hat in the ring… its first come first served… if I get more than ten white ones, they will be allocated to the names in that position… sorry about this, I know it’s not ideal… if you’re not arsed about the colour, let me know also and I shall keep for you… released for Friday the 17th of June… I hoped I would get around 20/25 of the white, but looks like it will be around 10 copies… will keep ye posted next week on developments… just telling ye the sceal is all.

WARNER

Warner for the 20th of May have the BOWIE “changes one Bowie” on CD digipack and 180 gram vinyl… random black or clear are the vinyl, 50% of each being pressed… like looking for willy wonkas golden ticket… you don’t know until you open the wrapper… bit of a gimmick really… the powers that be know a lot of Bowie fans are completists and the record company are not really looking after their customers… make it limited to a number so at least the early and more eager birds will get the worms… this way (50/50 way) is less fair but probably more lucrative… don’t kill the golden goose lads… vinyl is keeping the whole thing afloat… do not piss people off… treat them right…cornerstone of any relationship is honesty, trust and respect… not making people feel like they have been mugged … bigi curamach Mr. Record company man or I won’t be coming for dinner, I can hear some Bowie fans hum.
Warner also has the second album release by Tom Petty’s band MUDCRUTCH… they actually formed back in 1970 originally… took them a while to get the debut album out… 2008… Warner also have a reissue of DEATH’s debut album “scream bloody gore” on 2CD and royal blue vinyl with codes.

UNIVERSAL

I did warn there was a bit tonight… is anybody awake still? Nearly there. Universal for the 20th of May have the new ERIC CLAPTON record called “I Still Do” on CD and LP… Bleeding Heart Pigeons have the CD release of their excellent debut “is” out next Friday. Ariana Grande has a new album… Bassist and a third of the JAM, Bruce Foxton has a new solo record… contributions by Weller. Sing Street gets its vinyl release and there are some nice Jazz 5CD sets by some of the greats like Miles, Coltrane and Bill Evans.

New song tonight by the Stone Roses… one of my favourite bands (who were never properly a band, if that makes sense). Probably, if there had been more productivity, would have been my numero uno, up there competing with THE DOORS, THE BEATLES, THE CURE and THE SMITHS, (note to upcoming bands, put THE at the start of your band name).

I was 15 when the debut album dropped… all the b-sides… sheer class… the tunes were class… still are… I love the second record also… it was a disappointment for a lot of people and the snobby purists will slag it off, but this snobby purist thinks it’s a fine record with some cracking tunes… so there for ya… must say though the new song… jury is out big time… lovely riff and playing all through by Squire, Mani with his northern soul influenced bass lines and Reni is driving the beat as only the beatmaster can but lyrically it is so weak… catchy, anthemic, but so weak lyrically… where are the lyrics that caught a 15 year olds imagination:

“as the miles they disappear,
see land begin to clear,
free from the filth and the scum,
this American satellite’s won”

from ‘Waterfall’ or

“kiss me where the sun don’t shine,
the past is yours but the future’s mine”

from ‘she bangs the drums’ or the adolescent awakenings from ‘going down’,

“Penny’s place, her crummy room,
her Dansette crackles to Jimi’s tune,
I don’t care I taste Ambre solaire,
her neck, her thighs, her lips, her hair”

Brownie was always a good man for lyrics, including his solo stuff like:

“fed up of excuses,
theres nothing more to say,
sands of your patience have surely drained away,
backed into a corner,
built of my design, peer into the future,
entwined is yours and mine,
I know this can’t go on if things remain the same,
drastic change is needed, its driving me insane”

…  and I’m sure there will be finely penned songs off this album…just not this one…. maybe they felt they had to open with some kind of a singalong anthem … I still love them and always will but this is no ‘I am the Ressurection’… did I say I still love them though…
Anyway, for those still awake,
sin e for this week,
Thanks for listening,
Ray

Birthdays, Breakfast Rolls and Bowie’s Glittering Stars

Hey everyone,

Hope all is well..

Music Zone will be 15 years old on Sunday (no need for champagne, or cakes, or chocolates, or anything for that matter..just glad to be alive!) It feels like only yesterday in some ways.. Bridget Jones was the big seller when the shop opened on Tuesday after the May bank holiday weekend… Nervous as a kitten I was… Standing like a rabbit caught in headlights when the first potential customer approached. Builder guy, breakfast roll wrapped up good and tight as they say.. ‘Any AC/DC CD’s?’.. Ah christ… Some of the Sony stock never landed in, including the AC/DC titles… ‘No sorry… Should be in during the week, I can hold one for you?’… ‘Nah, you’re grand, i’ll call another day…’ Note to self and others… Always have some AC/DC titles… Anyway, excuse my meanderings into past lives…

One other quick note to self and others, no really big beasts in the sky back then, or files to download to your PC either… So more important note to self and others… These days (2016), have AC/DC titles in stock!

Releases for the shop for today, May 6th, include RYAN ADAMS, GREGORY PORTER, MICHAEL JACKSON, THE RIDES, 10’000 MANIACS, MOTLEY CRUE, JEAN MICHEL JARRE, and the new BEYONCE CD.

For all who prefer the visual, check out the new release video here :

Releases for May 13th include CORINNE BAILEY RAE’s new album on Universal, the METALLICAvinyl boxsets (first two records), and the new DRAKE album also.

WARNER

Warner for the 13th of May have a MORBID ANGEL LP reissue of ‘Altars of Madness’, THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA Deluxe CD remaster of ‘Spirit of the Century’ on Omnivore and lastly, the big one from Warner next week is the new FOY VANCE album ‘The Wild Swan’, on CD and LP… Signed to Ed Sheeran’s label where in fairness artists and bands are allowed to do as they please creatively (allegedly anyway).

PIAS

PIAS for the 13th of May have new albums by EAGULLS ‘Ullages’ on CD, LP and also on initial order only coloured LP for Indies like me… EAGULLS have been mentioned by some sectors in the same sentences as THE CURE and THE COCTEAU TWINS… No pressure there lads… Just two of the greatest bands ever is all…

New metal albums on Nuclear Blast for next week by GRAND MAGUS and also by HATEBREED.

PIAS also have NEW ORDERS ‘Music Complete’ on deluxe CD, which (and please ignore me with my affection for cheap silly gags), doesn’t seem that complete at all, there having been so many versions of it already.. (Sorry, can’t help myself)…

PIAS have a debut, a hotly anticipated debut record by OSCAR, also WOLF PARADE, ‘Apologies to the Queen Mary’ on triple LP (coloured only for the indies..), or cassette tape… Appearing more and more on sell in sheets from the record companies to me… Never… Surely… Never.. I for one like the format… 18 year old Fiestie that passed the NCT last week only allows cassettes to be played in it… It only allows certain other things also, like who it lets into it and who can start her… You and I both know that next week the Fiestie could be in the bin, but like Danny Healy Rae sure we’ll keep going for as long as we can get away with it.. There’s nothing in that whole climate change crap i’d say… Or drink driving either for that matter…

Was tempted in starting a tiny cassette corner in the shop just for Sean O’ Rourke and the likes who like rewinding the tape with their biro… Therapeutic I think he said… Cassettes anyone?.. Cassettes… Bueller…. Bueller…

Sorry, lastly this time from PIAS are some Domino LP releases from the likes of THE FALL,PAVEMENT, CASS MCCOMBS and FOUR TET.

The latest catch phrase in the shop, for a while now really, which has toppled the ‘do you sell iTunes cards here?’ chart topper, is definitely, ‘jays, the records are back hah!’… ‘They are…’ ‘Crikey, i’ve loads of them up the attic, the must be worth a fortune’. Well, the follow up line can vary to a number of different roads or tangents (I do know a bit about tangents, note to self, ease off the tangents…), but the opening line is heard 40 times a week in the shop over the last few months, easily hitting Itunes off it’s perch… ‘Jays the records are back huh?’… The records are back.

SONY

Sony for the 13th of May have a new album by KYGO and a few gems of reissues on vinyl bySANTANA including ‘Abraxas’ and the self titled record.

Essential for next week have the Armin Van Buuren, ‘State of Trance 2016’ on 2CD.

MOV

Music on Vinyl upcoming releases include MILES DAVIS Double Live LP ‘Dark Magus’ and IGGY POP’s fourth solo album ‘Soldier’, IAN BROWN ‘Golden Greats’, BOB DYLAN’s ‘World Gone Wrong’, and the brilliant DANCES WITH WOLVES soundtrack by JOHN BARRY and some SOFT MACHINE reissues.

Republic of Music have the 20th anniversary of the MOBB DEEP classic ‘The Infamous’ on double coloured vinyl (one blue and one orange) for next week.

New CHILI PEPPERS album announced for June as I am sure you are aware.

I noticed a load of people holding the new BOWIE record sleeve up to the sun or the heavens today.. Is there some sort of mass cult effort like a Ouija Board type of thing to contact the great man? Or is that the star transforms into a galaxy of shining stars when sunlight hits it (no wonder it took nearly 4 months to be discovered).. Note to self….. Stop trying to tell the Bowie heads stuff they obviously already know… I am right in thinking the notes to self do come from the Bridget Jones film? Soundtrack came out in May 2001?… Note to self…. Check your research….

I’m sure you won’t be sorry to read that’s that…

Sin é for tonight..

Check out the website for all the comings and goings,

Thanks for listening,

Heart Felt Thanks, and a Great Instore Gig Announcement

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note… Normal service will resume soon.

Two points of note today though, both important.

Local lads THE SHAKER HYMN are playing an instore with us this Friday at 4PM to launch their new album ‘Do You Think You’re Clever?’… If you can pop in to support the lads that would be great.. They’re playing Coughlan’s also that same Friday 22nd of April, still a few tickets left.

Secondly, a hugely important, heartfelt, genuine thank you to everyone who supported us for RSD.. Ye guys reading this.. Sheer class.. Humbling to be honest.. The support… The bands… Thank ye.. And the boys who work with me.. Thanks!

Sin e,

Ray

Shadow Puppets, Shaker Hymns and more acts for RSD

Hi everyone,

Hope the form is good.

Here are a few links for new records in the shop this week, including BOB MOULD, THE REPLACEMENTS, PEARL JAM, JOE BONAMASSA, KIRAN LEONARD, AMON AMARTH, THE SCRIPT and WHITE DENIM to name but a few… Quite a bit new this week actually.

Check out all the releases in video format here, there is a nice bit! :

https://musiczone.ie/videos/

And it’s a bit of a bumper week next Friday the 1st of April… Biggest I suppose is the newLAST SHADOW PUPPETS record, ‘Everything You’ve Come To Except’, out on Domino Records via PIAS. Out on CD, CD/Book, LP, or Limited LP + coloured bonus 7’’. Alex and Miles return for a second offering eight years on from debut. The deluxe heavyweight gatefold LP includes a 32 page booklet, and a bonus coloured 7’’ featuring lead single ‘Bad Habits’ and an exclusive new track. Check out ‘Bad Habits’ below :

lastshadow

PIAS

THE HEAVY also return with their fourth record… A real melting pot of influences and funkiness… Again there is a limited LP with a 7’’ and also a limited LP Boxset available on Counter Records via PIAS once again.

Another biggie out from PIAS next Friday is the new MOGWAI record on Rock Action… Again Indies only coloured vinyl… ‘Record Shop Day has arrived’ I hear you say, 15 days early…!!

I’m hearing a small bit of disappointment on the shop floor about the releases for RSD this year. I must agree that there are not as many belters as last year…. It is more varied and diverse for sure… But obviously a disappointing list (in some eyes) affects the day (naturally enough). Releases like the three above would have been belters of releases for RSD… But record companies know that customers are going to go to stores anyway maybe and get those three above.. I am a firm believer in LPs for RSD.. More LPs, less EPs and 7’’s for the day anyway. Fingers crossed anyway. Good LPs will always tip away. A collectable 7’’ you can look at for a long long time (forever) and may not be that collectable in the end, unless your a dustmite… Nice then alright.

That said, we can crib as much as we want, but there are some solid releases as always on the day! These include BOWIE, METALLICA, THE DOORS, BOB DYLAN, THE ANIMALS,NIRVANA, as well as a good focus on modern popular bands like BLOSSOMS, BIRDY,BASTILLE, and many more. So while the list may be a lot more varied this year, there are some golden nuggets of limited vinyl as always provided by the RSD day.

Overall it is still a day we are all very much looking forward to in the shop… Limited vinyl and live music always leads to a great day!

Not fully confirmed yet but a nice bit of music lined up for the day as per usual.

Confirmed are ANDERSON, CRY MONSTER CRY, RAISING JUPITER, and brilliant Cork newcomers CROJAYN…. Check out these boys! Should hopefully have one or two more confirmed for next week!

Anderson :

Cry Monster Cry :

Raising Jupiter :

Crojayn :

Anyway, enough of RSD until next week.. (The sign is up… We’re in the mode!)..

Second biggest release for this week in our opinions is the new album by THE SHAKER HYMN.. Their second record and it’s another beauty.. A bit more of a psychedelic feel than the first record.. Great tunes once again all through, and very well produced by Brendan Fennessy of O Emperor… Sax, cello, piano, organ, viola, trombone thrown in from time to time on this new CD with great effect.. I know quite a few of ye picked up the debut album from us and this new one certainly is a step forward. The Shaker Hymn really are one of the best hometown bands around at the moment… About to start a nationwide tour, and they are playing Coughlan’s on April 22nd.  Might have the lads in for a few tunes also soon..

Forgot to mention with the PIAS stuff above… There is a special 10th Anniversary 2LP on coloured of the SUFJAN STEVENS classic ‘Illinois’… I must admit his album last year was my favourite of the year.. A truly beautiful record..’The man who taught me to swim, he couldn’t quite say my first name’.. You couldn’t fault Stefan now to be fair.. Maybe not for everyone, but pour moi, a gorgeous album… Understated, soft, and dark.

PROPER

Proper have a few interesting releases out for next Friday, including the new PET SHOP BOYS album, JAMES LUTHER DICKINSON and THE NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS album ‘I’M JUST DEAD, I’M NOT GONE’, and RYAN VAIL, a young lad from Derry has an interesting record out… Classical / Electronica type of thing if that is a thing..

Fortuna Pop has the new SEPTEMBER GIRLS record out next Friday.. The Dublin 4 piece play Cyprus Avenue on April 16th, with upcoming Cork group The Sunshine Factory.. Will be a gig not to be missed!

Warner have an album by LUKAS GRAHAM (Band) out next Friday also.. Lukas (singer) had a different upbrining than most… Brought up in an autonomous artist’s enclave in the centre of Copenhagen, with no cars, street lighting or police intervention, which goes by the name of Christinia… Probably shapes you a bit different so he might have something to say..

WARNER

Warner also have a new album out next week by WEEZER… Their tenth.. The White Album… Now lads… There really only is one…

Also out by Warner is the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame DLP Live, which has a loud of household names on it.

The new PANIC AT THE DISCO album gets it’s vinyl record release. Also Warner have the reissue of the 1967 classic ‘West Meets East’ by RAVI SHANKAR and YEHUDI MENUHIN.

Lastly from Warner for next week is a new BLACK STONE CHERRY album ‘Kentucky’, on CD/DVD and LIMITED 3LP on white vinyl with codes.

UNIVERSAL

Universal have the soundtrack to new Irish film ‘SING STREET’ and the vinyl record release from the riveting AMY WINEHOUSE documentary ‘AMY’… The latest Bond soundtrack is out on vinyl, and lastly from Universal is the new album from BABYMETAL, ‘Metal Resistance’ on CD, LP and LP Set which includes a T-Shirt…

Very lastly, we have just had another SUPERB act confirmed for R.S.D… Anna Mitchell has agreed to do a slot with a little help from John Blek… That will be a very nice one.. All good…

Check out what’s coming and going at :

Sin é for this week,

Thanks for listening,

Ray

Joys and Tears of RSD, Acts for the day and more from Mr. Bonnamassa

Hey everyone,

How’s the form?

Kind of normal service resumed this week.

First up is the new vinyl record release video, which has the big releases from the last couple of weeks, including local lads JOHN BLEK AND THE RATS and some big names such as JEFF BUCKLEY, JAMES, POLICIA and many more, check the video out below, if you want to see them all, a good bit in! :

https://musiczone.ie/videos/

Records released last Friday include BRIAN FALLON, RICHMOND FONTAINE, IGGY POP, PEARL JAM, JAMES, TOM PETTY, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN.

Big response to last weeks note on the Record Shop Day, very varied selection this year…. Nothing huge but nice and varied… Maybe not as strong as last year, personally as a shop keeper I prefer album releases, always less of a graveyard after RSD with albums.. RSD can get a bad wrap at times and certainly there are some negative aspects to it… Pricing being one I suppose.. To be fair the 7” and 12” can be excessive.. I don’t know why, it’s unfair… Record companies could feel there is major re-sell value on a lot of the stuff but that’s not a fair reason for inflated prices. Infact, that only fuels another negative for RSD and that is people who get involved for the wrong reasons, purely and simply to buy a record and flip it for twice it’s value 3 hours later on Ebay… Parasites is the industry term for them.. But there are parasites in all games where product is limited and only increases in value… It’s the way of the world as unfortunate as it is… Most who visit us are cool, no issues there, thank God.. I’d hate if the wrong hands got an only limited release to flip it on Ebay taking it away from a genuine fan.

Another problem faced by us on RSD is the availablitiy of the produce… It’s rare and limited by nature but one company this year decided not to support the Irish industry, that company being Music On Vinyl.. Here’s the reason that I can’t buy stock from them this year, in a’roundabout fashion from rep

‘Hi Ray,

I’m afraid that a RSD order is not such a good idea after all because of the way it is organized:

We have to create a special sub account for each participating store; a special RSD account.

Then all RSD orders are collected and automatically entered in the system at once.

Until this is done it is still uncertain who will get what or how many.

When the stock has arrived and is divided between all the participating stores in chronological order,  then all the RSD shipments will be shipped out on the same day via priority mail. This is quite expensive but priority is the only option.

And on top of that our accounts department does not make an invoice for an amount below € 300,-

No matter how much I wanted to ship you these titles, all in all its probably not worth the hassle and it would be better to wait until after RSD to see what’s still available then.

I did not know it would be such a tour du force to organize this otherwise I would have told you this much earlier.’

So, I apologise in advance to anyone hoping to get MOV RSD releases here, or in fact anywhere in the country for that matter.. I suppose my returning cribbing emails have yielded promises for next year…

All that said, RSD, is for us what it says on the tin.. It supports us as independent record shops.. And it does.

Last year it was as as good as any day Christmas week.. There was a lovely vibe in the shop all day long… People supported us even without buying any of the RSD stuff… It was humbling, the support, to be honest, from ye the customers and the musicians who played for us… Truly humbling. Musicians signed up to play already for this year include CRY MONSTER CRY, CROJAN and ANDERSON who plays a gig in Cyprus Avenue on Friday April 22 (tickets available now!), and is going to drive down from Dublin to us on the day to play a few tunes in the shop.. Top man… Fair play.. We don’t mind if he turns into… Bleeding Bono (said in my Dublin accent). Anyway bottom line… It’s a hugely important and special day for us here..

CARGO

Right. On to releases for next week the 25th of March.. Merge via Cargo have a new BOB MOULDrecord out, limited coloured LP here!

UNIVERSAL

Universal have the MOTORTOWN REVUE record Live In Paris, which includes all the Motown stars, the Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder etc, all on a 3LP set.. Universal also some STATUS QUO CD expanded reissued versions of ‘If You Can’t Stand The Heat’, ‘On The Level’, and ‘What Ever You Want’. They also have an ERIC CLAPTON 4LP Live Album Collection, which includes Derek and the Dominos, Rainbow Concert, E.C. Was Here and Just One Night.. Also some nice new Bluenote Jazz vinyl reissues with classics from Count Bassie, Ella / Louis, Billie Holiday and Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker…

WARNER

Warner probably have the biggest releases for the next Friday the 25th with the new JOE BONAMASSA album on CD / Deluxe CD and 2LP… The album is called ‘Blues if Desperation’, out via Provogue..ALL NEW TRACKS

Warner also has the BIRDY record on the same 3 formats, EVA CASSIDY ‘Simply Eva’ LP reissue, and a lost JEFF HEALEY album gets a release.

SONY

Sony have a bit out next Friday also, including a new WHITE DENIM record (Major Label Release), new AMON AMARTH album on CD and LP as well as a load of good vinyl record reissues, such as PEARL JAM’s Vs and Vitalogy, as well as all of THE SCRIPTS albums.

Sin é for this week folks,

Check out VINYL RECORDS CORK for all comings and goings..

Thanks for listening,

Ray.

MEXRISSEY, Metallica as Ambassadors and Radio 1 Editting

Hi everyone,

How’s it going this week?

Sorry with the day late newsletter again… High powered interviews all week delayed me a tab.. More on that in a while.

Firstly, records in the shop for release today.. BOWIE BOY, SANTIGOLD, MORRISSEYANTHRAX.. all the other stuff from the video today which you can find here :
https://musiczone.ie/videos/

Right so, on to releases for next Friday the 4th of March.

SONY

Firstly from Sony is the major label release (debut release really, only a live album before now) from HERMITAGE GREEN, entitled ‘Save Your Soul’… Fine up and coming Irish band from Limerick who really are supposed to be sensational live. I hope this record (only CD for now) does really well for them.. A vibrant Irish music scene is important for all of us. I personally think it’s good at the moment, without any major superstars (Hozier maybe an exception on second thought).. Anyone else??.. Bueller… Bueller..

Sony also have a new Ray Lamontagne album, his 6th entitled ‘Ouroboros’.

I see, in our first mention of the year, (more unashamedly on the way over the next few weeks, we promise), METALLICA were announced as Record Shop Day ambassadors, with a couple of RSD releases by the band themselves coming up for RSD.. Changed my mind.. Was going to have a pop of Lars, but no… Not going to.

Next up, Universal have a new band on the scene, THE STRUTS.. I like this crowd… Queen rip off one might say (the main singer is the bulb of Freddie, may have even gone to his dentist to do the job for him) but they have something I feel.. Catchy tune

UNIVERSAL

Next up from Universal is the brilliant MASSIVE ATTACK, with their ‘Ritual’ EP, which also sees the return of The Tricky Kid, as well as collaborations with Young Fathers, Roots Manuva, and newcomer Azekel…  The EP comes as a 12″ Heavyweight (180 gm) Mid Grey coloured vinyl with 4 colour centre labels housed in a black polylined inner hand placed into 3 mm spine sleeve printed 4 colour process + special screen printed 5th colour orange designed by Hingston Studios and the man himself, Rob Del Naja.

Universal also have the BEACH BOYS ‘Party’ LP.. An album of covers all unplugged. Also from Universal is the new MAX RICHTER album ‘Songs From Before’, and lastly some jazz reissues on the Verve label including ELLA FITZGERALD / LOUIS ARMSTRONG, CHARLIE ‘BIRD’ PARKER and OSCAR PETERSON.

Essential for the 4th of March have MEXRRISSEY… What’s that Ray, I hear you ask.. Well, it’s a Mexican tribute to the MOZ man.. A covers album by Mexico’s greatest musicians of some of Moz’s greatest tunes… Why are you telling us about that Ray?.. Well, simply and maybe surprisingly, I think it sounds really good.. But hey, one man’s meat is another man’s poison… (That right Moz?!!!)

Essential also have the new album by THE FEELING.

Some of you may have heard me on the Sean O Rourke radio programme earlier in the week. Firstly, t’was a great plug and was delighted to be asked.. Great opportunity to get shop mentioned to (I’d imagine) a couple of hundred thousand listeners.. But, (there’s always a but with you Ray)… I was naive thinking it was all hunky dory, wine and roses with the interview.. Not fully the case, but felt in hindsight that it was taken (the vinyl resurgence) a small bit negatively.. Price v. quality… I would have bigged up the quality in the 7 or 8 minute interview, but the 60 or so seconds kind of painted a different picture I thought.. Maybe me just being super sensitive.. Cassettes, for f*cks sake!! No wonder Sean O Rourke thought I was a nut job… Not too far wrong, the profession I have! All and all look, a great mention, just slightly caught out by those editors.

PIAS

PIAS for the 4th of March have the new M. WARD record (sounds lovely).. Must have wrote it in Ireland.. ‘More Rain’ is the title..

PIAS also have the new POLICA record, their third offering, on coloured vinyl for Indies only.
Debut from LAPSLEY also out through PIAS next week, only 19 years of age.. Take a listen below

New SABATON ‘Heroes on Tour’ 2DVD/CD or 2LP, and THE VIOLENT FEMMES have a new offering, their 9th, all through PIAS.

WARNER

Warner for the 4th of March have a FLEETWOOD MAC 3LP in concert set, and new albums by MIKE SNOW, INVERLOCK and THE CORAL, their 8th album.. First in five years..

Warner for today, a bit under the radar, have an expanded version of MORRISSEY’S brilliant ‘Bona Drag’ ALBUM, 2LP with a bonus poster.

Check what’s coming in on
VINYL RECORDS CORK

Free shipping on 3+ records if you can’t call in to say hello, or just don’t want to say hello.. (Couldn’t blame ya, ala Sean O’ Rourke)

Sin é for this week,

Big week next week for Friday the 26th.

WARNER

Have to start with Warners reissues of the boy BOWIE’s early 70s albums. Some classics amongst ‘Space Oddity’, ‘Man Who Sold The World’, ‘Hunky Dory’, ‘Ziggy’, ‘Pin Ups’, ‘Aladdin Sane’, and lastly ‘Bowie at the Beeb’ 4LP vinyl boxset at €75 retail…. all the others €23…. €27 with the big dog in the sky…

Pre-order any of the Bowie reissues before next Thursday at 4PM, and have them delivered to you for release on Friday in Ireland! Check that out here :

I saw the Grammy’s ‘tribute’ to Bowie the other night and thought ‘tribute’ was a strong word. No disrespect to anyone involved, they were on a hiding to nothing.. I wonder was Gaga the first to be asked?? It reminded me of a wedding band medley aside from the corporation backed graphics that were aesthetically pleasing for a minute or two..

I thought a sincere, heartfelt collage of music, images, anecdotes, quotes from the boy BOWIE himself and from other artists he influenced and helped would have worked better (in my opinion)….

Corporate backed Hollywood razzmattattlle we got instead…

Warner also have a CHILI PEPPERS ‘Greatest Hits’ out over the next few days on double LP.. Limited Marbled vinyl for this one.

Warner also have a new Santigold album, ‘99 Cents’ on CD and LP, and a new MACKLEMORE + RYAN LEWIS CD (their second offering), and a new BONNIE RAITT album on CD and LP, and lastly more PHIL COLLINS reissues.. ‘Hello, I Must Be Going’, and ‘Dance into the Light’.

UNIVERSAL

Universal have a big release for the 26th also with the second album by THE 1975on CD and Double gatefold vinyl.. I really like the 80s vibe to the single. A real band, a real frontman. I’m going to give this record a good chance.

Here’s a taster

Small tiny critischism… The album is called  ‘I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful and Yet So Unaware of it’…. Could be the title of a Michael Bolton song… Get your buckets.

Universal also have the GEORGE FEST which is a tribute to the late, great GEORGE HARRISON recorded on what would have been his 73rd birthday. Guests on the night included BRIAN WILSON, BRANDON FLOWERS, and THE FLAMING LIPS among others. This comes as a 3LP set or 2CD/DVD
Here’s a taster of the gig..

Universal also have a MILOS KARADAGLIC Beatles tribute LP, with the likes of TORI AMOS, GREGORY PORTER on vocals.

Got a nice bit of reaction for my Bruce bashing??? Last week… I like Bruce. Best reaction here…

‘We do need a younger BROOCE…a younger everyone really.. but they aint there Ray. Now maybe it’s because I’m a dinosaur but I don’t see anything or anyone revolutionary out there anymore. No young guns coming up wanting to change the world. Plenty out there wanting to make a fortune and be famous but to me music and roc’n’roll was always more than that. It’s probably the romantic in me but music is suppose to change your life and very few artists these days do that. Nick Cave once said that when you listen to  music when you’re  young it changes the gears of your heart. You know when you just couldn’t wait for the next album by your favourite artist. But are there any acts out there now who really affect people that way. Where are the tribes gone? You know the Punks, Mods, Skins, whatever…..It’s all a bit bland now. No one there that will make you go..WHAT THE F**K was that….. And I believe that the  young people coming to music these days are losing out on a lot….but look I’m a Dinosaur…….Anyway back to BROOCE, wasn’t it the Who that said ‘meet the new BOSS, same as the old BOSS’

Could not have said it better myself… Feedback is great.. Feel free to engage please… I am a bit younger than this dinosaur but my age were Cureheads or Modeies… I loved both bands, so didn’t go goth or leather but kids of today are missing out… Music is not shared well. Not in the right way. ‘Come around my gaff I got the new Guns N’ Roses cassette if you want to listen’.. It’s all singurly with youtube/dowloads.

Saw two girls (15/16) taking photoes of each other in the shop during the week flicking through the records… (For their profile pictures i’d imagine, never saw them before…)

selfeh

At this point last night (about 11:40) disaster struck (well thats a complete overstatement really). I lazily kind of clicked a few keys on the keyboard and everything I wrote on Mailchimp disappeared… Spent until 1.50AM driving myself insane trying to retrieve it… no joy had to do it all again today (got I.T. advice.. vanished…).

CARGO

Cargo fave a new album by ERIC BELL out next Friday called ‘EXILE’.

PIAS

PIAS for February 26th have the new ANTHRAX album ‘For All Kings’ via Nuclear Blast on Double LP and double CD limited digi-pack. The Gloaming’s second album is also out next Friday via Realworld Records…. LP not till 6th of May though… PIAS also have a reissue of Jesse Malin’s Debut, that Ryan Adams produced, called ‘Fine Art of Self Destruction’. Fine album… Lastly from PIAS is the new Ricky Warwick solo project (front man of Black Star Riders) on double CD and double LP.. ‘When Patsy Cline was Crazy and Guy Mitchell Sang the Blues’. Great title

Essential have the ‘SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS’ album out for next week..

SONY

Sony have a deluxe version of MICHAEL JACKSON’s ‘Off The Wall’ album on CD/DVD, ENTOMBED’s new album ‘Dead Dawn’ and a vinyl reissue of CAROLE KING’s ‘Tapestry’ again…

An interesting customer of ours rang me on Thursday and asked me did I want to do an interview piece on the vinyl resurgence for the Sean O’ Rourke radio programme… after a gulp…. I said yes!!!  Thanks Brian.

(REDACTED :p)

It was on Radio 1 Monday morning…http://www.rte.ie/radio1/podcast/podcast_seanorourke.xml…down the page a bit under ‘Vinyl’

Sin é for this week,

Thanks for listening,
