July 13th, ’23: OH BOY, a brand new MICK album, WATERBOYS and RIDE reissues, class recent JONI gig, THE DARKNESS 20 years on, LIVE DOORS and Holiday Season

Hi folks

Hope all is well out there.

*I am writing this bit after I wrote everything else on these pages because news broke to us today ( yesterday  to ye but today as ye read it) ….we are delaying sending the weekly newsletter until now( did ye notice!!)  … 10AM Thursday morning … it’s very very  seldom we change the time the newsletter goes out but this week we felt we had to make an exception….cos folks there is a brand new MICK FLANNERY album just announced in the last few minutes…hot off the presses is the news….yep brand new studio album, Micks 8th studio album now….i remember saying to Mick at the launch of album 4 “ by the rule” in the siopa  in  Douglas Court in April 2014 ( if memory serves me right on the date) that he had a nice body of work ( if memory serves me again Ian Richards dropped Mick into town after the instore as he had no car with him, where does the time go) …4 fine albums to that point…agreed folks that he has 7 fine albums to this point…so that exemplary  body of work is growing all the time…class act.  So new album coming “ Goodtime Charlie” on the 15th Sept and it will be on vinyl and CD. Here’s the title track with one of Micks biggest hooks…

(26) Mick Flannery – Goodtime Charlie (Official Music Video) – YouTube

.here is more info on the album …i have had the pleasure of hearing this album in full…one and a half full listens and i think this could be in the masterpiece class…i really mean that, it sounds brilliant to me…anyway heres more about it…the news of signing to John Prines label in the states is magic…two of my own favourite songwriters. Anyways…

“Mick Flannery is one of Ireland’s most acclaimed songwriters and singers. The award-winning, double-platinum selling artist has released seven studio albums, three of which have reached No. 1 status.

On September 15th he will release his eighth studio album ‘Goodtime Charlie’.  Featuring collaborations with Valerie June, Anaïs Mitchell and Tianna Esperanza.  Mick has partnered with John Prine’s Oh Boy Records, which for them will be their first International signing.

Speaking of the signing, Fiona Prine President of Oh Boy said:

“Oh Boy Records continues to be the home label for singer songwriters who are dedicated to their craft. The body of work created by my husband, John Prine, remains our North Star when making decisions about the artists we bring onto our label. Mick Flannery is arguably one of the best songwriters to emerge from Ireland’s long and storied history of writers, poets and musicians.  I couldn’t  be more delighted to welcome Mick, as the first international signing, to our Oh Boy Records family. John was proud to be part of the music community on Ireland’s western coast and I know he would be proud of this new partnership with Mick and his team.”

“Mick Flannery has a voice for the ages, a complete Master of his craft” cited by Clash Magazine, whilst The Sunday Times said he “conjures up exquisite story-telling.”  His last album in 2021 consisted of a collection of duets with up and coming Irish artist Susan O’Neill.  American Songwriter called ‘In The Game’ a “Sorrowful Masterpiece.” The record was nominated for the Choice Music Prize, and won the RTE Radio 1 song of the year two years in a row for tracks ‘Baby Talk’ and ‘Chain Reaction.’ The album was the biggest selling independent record in Ireland in 2021.

Mick Flannery’s songs are fluent in expressing layered aspects of the human condition, its flaws, triumphs, and general uncertainty.   His live shows are renowned for his self-deprecating humor, audience engagement and the ability to bring people on a journey of both heartbreak and joy, often in the same instance. “

Sin e for now on Mick folks…ta an leabhar ar oscailt!

So releases for this friday the 14th of July include…

And then for the 21st of July we have…

Main week for this week is Friday the 28th of July and we are going to start with THE ORCHARD.

Cooking vinyl has The Waterboys: reissues of their 2003 album ‘Universal Hall‘ including Orange Vinyl and 2007 album ‘Book Of Lightning‘ on Sunrise Yellow Vinyl, both of the releases the first time these albums have been available on LP format.

“the Waterboys’ eighth studio album is made available on vinyl for the first time, in ‘Seville’ orange. Originally released in 2003, ‘Universal Hall’ was recorded in the basement studio of the titular hall, a theatre and concert venue in Findhorn, Scotland. It is the most nakedly spiritual of the band’s records, all the more so for having been mostly written and entirely made in the spiritual community at Findhorn. At the time of release, band leader Mike Scott described ‘Universal Hall’ as “a record containing eleven spiritual songs that articulate – to the best of my ability – the vision that drives, challenges, sustains and transforms me.” This vision is explored in now-classic Waterboys numbers such as Peace Of Iona, The Christ In You and Universal Hall itself, One track, the celtic-flavoured I’ve Lived Here Before, was written with Liam O’Maonlai of Hothouse Flowers. The album also saw the return of the band’s fiddler Steve Wickham, his first appearance on a Waterboys’ record since ‘Room To Roam’ in 1990. The vinyl format is 180g Orange vinyl. The CD format is packaged in a jewelcase with 16 page booklet.”

  • Lauv: 5th Anniversary Double Vinyl of his 2018 compilation album ‘I Met You When I Was 18’ including the worldwide hit “I Like Me Better”.
  • Darlingside: fourth album ‘Everything Is Alive’ departs somewhat from the Boston-based quartet’s “exquisite literary minded, baroque folk- pop.”

Lastly Orchard has a reissue of Art Pepper “ ARTWORKS” ON Vinyl.

Sony for the 28th of July has a good hip hop compilation Raised By Rap: 50 Years of Hip-Hop on double LP with 25 tracks.

Warner for the 28th have some big name releases with for starters NEIL YOUNG “ Official Release Series Discs Disc 22, 23+, 24, 25” (Volume 5) via REPRISE as a 6CD set or a 9LP SET. Neil Young’s Official Release Series Volume 5 is a stunning collection of four albums that begins with the exciting renaissance that came with the release of Freedom in 1989, and continues on the unequalled exploration of collections Ragged Glory (1990), Weld (1991) and Arc (1991). In many ways, it is a musical travelogue of how Young saw the future and opened up creative worlds for the use of sound and originality which had not been used before. The Official Release Series Volume 5 is available as a vinyl box set of the original four albums on 9 vinyl LPs and the CD version is now issued on 6 CDs. Like all the reissues in this series, the albums are remastered from the best source available – original analog tape in most cases. For the four albums in the series, this is the first time they have been remastered. In addition on Ragged Glory, the 10-song original album is expanded for this re-issue with 4 rare tracks. “Interstate” and “Don’t Spook The Horse” were both B-sides to singles. “Box Car” and the 12 minute “Born To Run” are both previously unreleased versions.

Look the price thing rears its head a bit again…i suspect cd will out sell lp sets here…

Out via Rhino (Pure) also on the 28th is the brilliant Joni Mitchell At Newport on 2LP or cd.

Astonishing lady, astonishing artist…this is such an emotional , amazing musical document when Joni returned to Newport just last year….hard to not feel emotional watching this…beautiful

While his own tour to promote Mountains has been put on hold, fans won’t have to wait long to hear the new album. On Mountains, Nils moves seamlessly between bluesy and straight-ahead rockers and tender ballads as only he can, all treated with his trademark attention to sonic detail, and unmistakable vocals and guitar. Mountains contains Nils’ adept story telling at its fnest, with 9 brand new originals and a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Back In Your Arms. The star- studded line- up of guests on the new album include Ringo Starr, Neil Young, David Crosby, Cindy Mizelle, the Howard Gospel Choir, and Ron Carter.

CLaddagh records has the second album by Ronan O Snodaigh + Myles O Reilly “ The Beautiful Road” on cd or LP.

Having written and developed new songs while touring, the duo decamped to a log cabin in Roscommon and a farmhouse in remote West Cork. Recording one song every day, surrounded by countryside and inspired by nature the pair set out to create a soothing listening experience by focusing on higher frequencies, inspired by the calming effects of bird song, wind, rain, and sea. They also sought to counter the increased levels of intrusive ambient “white noise” caused by traffic, machinery, and other unpredictable sounds arising from the worlds post pandemic return to frenzied norms. Noises that so often overwhelm our ears and inner filters. The result is a collection of songs that experiment with a variety of comforting sonic elements, including bells, breaths, brush-stroked rhythms, halftime beats, and ambient melodies, to create a sonic massage that relaxes the ears and settles the soul.

 Heres a tune from it

Going to hand you to Shane now amd ill be dropping in with special news in a while….in my real time a while but in your real time you have read it already…could be a harry potter book.

Anyway Shane off you go kid…

Sound, Ray, sweet news that! Adam played me the single/track off it the other week. High quality as usual.
Hows it going all? Hope yere good.

Some nice ones to mention this week.
Before I do, just want to link a song from a band that I discovered yesterday. One of the lads (Peter L) pre-ordered it so I checked it out. Feckin class! Going to be in my top 10 for the year I’d say. Or maybe I was just in a good mood.
The band are Water From Your Eyes and this is the fitting last track from their new album:

If ye want to buy their product we can order in!

First one of the down the lines to mention today is coming at the start of October. A band I love. The Darkness are doing a special 20th Anniversary edition of their debut album ‘Permission to Land…Again’.

One of the best rock albums of this century in my opinion. Every track is a banger. Brilliant Gibson/Marshall sound too. There is a load of rare b-sides and outtakes, plus live stuff included on either a 5 LP set or 4 CD/DVD set. And there’s a limited indies marble blue version of just the album.
I saw them with my family in the Point in around 04, and then myself, Noelle and Bobby saw them in Cyprus avenue about 5 or 6 years ago. Some turnaround.
Bobby and his friend got Justin a birthday cake and it also happened to be Paddy’s Day. But Justin is vegan so he couldn’t eat it! But twas the thought that counted! Oh and Noelle and I had our wedding dance thingy to ‘Love is Only a Feeling’ !
Anyway, I’ll keep going or I’ll run out of time.

Theres a nice looking DOORS release coming in September. ‘Live at the Matrix 1967’ on 3 CD or 5 LP+7 inch set.

UK Rap/Grime legend Dizze Rascal will be reissuing his debut album ‘Boy in da Corner’ as a special 20th anniversary edition through XL Recordings on yellow, black and white 3 LP at the start of November. He was only 19 when it came out and it won a Mercury Prize. Here’s ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’

Also coming soon:

Shoegaze band LUSH have reissues coming soon too. If interested let us know.
Before I go, just want to let ye know that the upcoming BOWIE release of Ziggy Stardust the Motion Picture Soundtrack on gold vinyl is only 38 euro with us. Amazon and a few other places have it for over 50 so a good saving if interested.

Back to you Ray so bud. Cheers.

Right thanks Shane….lots going on today!

Right last one for today is Integral for the 4th August…

July 5th, ’23: Good PRICE on BLUR, new BLUEGRASS, exciting young rock band, Blues REISSUES, new Irish Supergroup, Limerick lad and full cabin crew on the MZ Yacht

Hi everyone

Hope all is well!

Releases in the siopa for this Friday the 7th of July include…

One for the Rory fans here….the artist who did the cover of “ all around man” is a Cork artist, Vincent Zara,  and he is going to be in the shop from 10 am saturday morning until 1pm Saturday afternoon the 8th of July…ill let him tell ye himself about it!!

Hi all, Vincent here…Ray and the lads have kindly invited me to the shop on Saturday from 10am-1pm. I’ll have a limited amount of signed, mounted prints with me. It was an unbelievable honour to be asked to do the cover art again. Colm Henry’s Self Aid photo was a gift to be given as a jumping off point. The album itself is incredible and Rory still had a full tank in 1990 so have no doubts on the quality. Plenty of ‘old’ blues along with Rory classics and the acoustic side, as always, is magic. Heavens Gate and Tattoo’d Lady were amazing highlights for me. Mark Feltham and Geraint Watkins bring harmonica and organ/accordion sounds so some familiar songs have a new feel to them. Looking forward to seeing you all, we give thanks and praise to the Independents! Thanks Ray and Co, VZ

So a really nice bespoke opportunity with this to meet the artist, get a signed print, get your album signed, photo with artist …really lovely way to document the release of this album…i know from the last time ( check shirt wizard) that folks from all over the globe were in contact with us ( after the fact) to try and get the companion signed art print with the album…blessed we are really to have the artist on our doorstep…and sher all this is about the great man anyway from our humble part of the world ….humble…hmmm…tangent time…someone told me during the week, ( not a true blood i must add!) that the census proved Cork was the most inbred county in the country…that 72% of people born in Cork , stayed in Cork like ( say it with a Cork accent) …anyway back to Rory, the rest of the globe is green with rebel envy!!…cash ideal for the prints on Saturday…grma.

Right so, releases for the 14th July include…

Main part of the hawk for tonight is for releases on the 21st of July so will start with Warner…and what i think is the biggest release of the week, maybe even the month to be fair, with the release of the new BLUR album “ THE BALLAD OF DARREN” via PLG UK Frontline or Parlophone …available on a host of formats including CD, DELUXE CD, Bluray audio version, std lp and indies coloured LP…bualadh bos on the price it has to be said…bualadh bos…i wont start again on the pricing thing, but proper pricing must be applauded …really looking forward to this, has been a while since the magic whip…heres a tune from the new record

HIGHWATER RECORDING CO. has R.L. Burnside “ Sound Machine Groove” on  Memphis Blue Vinyl.

FM RECORDS has a couple of nice broadcast CD releases with THE BEACH BOYS “ American Broadcasts” and ROBERT PLANT “ The 1983 UK Broadcast” both on CD only.

We see a bump in CD sales over the last few months…a fall off on LPs a little bit…a lot of new releases now are selling a bit more on CD and a bit less on LP…wonder why that is folks…it begins with P …i said i wasn’t going to be John Wayne this week so ill leave it in the stable.

Recorded at the legendary RCA Studios in Nashville, the band utilized the large recording room to capture the pure energy of their world-renowned live performances. Heres a tune…a rockier one

(23) Greta Van Fleet – The Falling Sky (Official Audio) – YouTube

And a more mystical one…

(23) Greta Van Fleet – Meeting The Master (Official Music Video) – YouTube

VERVE has NINA SIMONE “ YOU’VE GOT TO LEARN” from the newport Jazz festival on CD, LP or indies cream LP.

Theres a new Gorgon City album via EMI “ Salvation” on CD or LP.

Spectrum has a nice compilation album on double LP “ The 80s Pure Pop Album”.

Going to hand ye over to Shane now as he takes ye down the road with releases/announcements etc as usual…

Cheers, Ray! How’s it going everyone?
Delighted to see Vincent Zara on board the newsletter today. I used to know him a bit through a friend who I was in a band with. He was always sound and talented.
I have the print from the Check Shirt Wizard cover up in the sitting room. His stuff is great.

I better get mentioning.
NEIL YOUNG has yet another release. Called ‘Chrome Dreams’, it features unreleased tracks from his 70s period. The vinyl features an etching on Side D.
Here’s a fairly raw sounding one from it, sounds good: https://youtu.be/a41503VlZC0

Young Adam called over to my place in Ringaskiddy last weekend. We had a great night. We watched Bo Selecta and had a sing-along to John Lennon!

There’s a very cool Irish supergroup release coming this month. It’s a 12 inch by OXN called ‘Love Henry’.
OXN are comprised of Radie Peat from Lankum, John ‘Spud’ Murphy, Eleanor Myler (Percolator) and Katie Kim. Top talent there all round. Their Claddagh records first signing in 18 years I believe.
Here’s the title track from that: https://youtu.be/ZJYJSFy9B4A

A group I like, BUDOS BAND have a new EP coming out at the end of the month called ‘Frontier’s Edge’. There will be a fairly limited green vinyl version of that available.
Here’s a track from that too: https://youtu.be/w8jpoBs95us
If you like Quinten Tarantino soundtracks you’ll like them!

Also coming around the corner are:

That’s all folks I think from me.
Adam is going to mention a surprise U2 one that just got announced in the last few hours.
Everyone’s on board tonight!

Hi all! Adam here, Ray asked me to write a bit about Zooropa as the transparent reissue is coming out. Had a hard act to follow but it held its own I reckon. An album that puts ya in a place. Stay (Faraway, so close) is one of my favourite U2 songs. The album is coming out on a Translucent Yellow pressing and It looks nice and all but the price is a bit iffy me thinks. We have it for 58 best and when me and Ray saw the buy-in price we both kinda gasped, is what is it I guess… Anyhoo! Its on a really tight allocation so get em while ye can folks! Classic album!!!:) Alright see ye!

Sound Adam! Back to Ray so.

Thanks Shane!

Hi Everyone

Hope yer all doing ok.

.. .half the year in the bag already…flying.

Then on the 7th of July we have releases by …

Meant to flag it earlier and its no biggie really ,  but  sher ill tell ye anyway….a lot of our suppliers Universal, Sony. Integral and Cargo use the same distribution  company and warehouse in Aylesbury Buckinghamshire  but Utopia distribution services are  closing the current Aylesbury warehouse and moving their entire physical distribution to a brand new purpose built warehouse in Bicester.

Boo hoo says you…main point is here…from Thursday the 10th of August through to Monday the 28th of August, there is a blackout while they get the new gaff up and running ( i presume with plenty teething problems after the 28th also!!) so we cant get Uni, Sony, Integral and Cargo stock during those 2 and a half weeks …new releases will be top heavy on either side of those dates as well as nothing will move between the 10th and 28th of August…not life changing for anyone but just letting ye know…our impeccable ( hah) service will be more interrupted than usual!! Ill remind ye closer to the time!

Republic of Music has a big one and ideally we need orders asap if interested …not out till july 28th but need numbers in! Dexys are back! 11 years since the release of their last album of original music, the acclaimed One Day I’m Going to Soar, the band return with a stunning new record, The Feminine Divine, out July 28th on 100% records.

Heres a tune from it… 6 year old Bonnie here at home likes it very much…having a little boogie in the kitchen to it

(12) Dexys – Coming Home Official Music Video – YouTube

It should be available to us on these formats…CDj, STD LP, INDIES PURPLE LP and Cassette…email back if interested…ROM can sometimes be flaky to deal with so im trying to get numbers in early to avoid trouble ( it dont always work!)

And thanks for the compliments to me and Adam, appreciate it! As for your proposal, I’m going to pure sit on the fence and say ‘I don’t mind’.
I think we’d miss your contribution though.

Anyway, back to this week’s stuff. Hi everyone, hope ye’re good!
Not a huge amount to mention this week, Santie is the main man from here on in maybe.
But some nice ones still.
First up is Irish artist, AILBHE REDDY with her second album ‘Endless Affair’ out Paddy’s day next year.
Her first album ‘Personal History’ is great. We played it a fair bit in the shop.
We will have the indies magenta/sky blue vinyl and the Irish exclusive coke bottle clear vinyl versions of it.
Here’s the first song off of it: https://youtu.be/KWW3rNAXSlk

Second to mention is FLOATING POINTS’ new EP release ‘2022’. Which is coming out on December 16th.
I like him. Ray and myself really enjoyed the record he did with Pharoah Sanders (last year I think?)
The years kinda feel like a blur after covid.
Here’s a song he released today from it: https://youtu.be/V7W6HZ1GucA

EDDIE PILLER is releasing another compilation ‘Mod Sounds of the 60S; Vol 2: Freakbeat and Psyche scene’ on 4 CD, 6 LP purple vinyl and 2 LP black vinyl and they’re released in February next year.

Also worth a mention coming around the corner:

NELL SMITH & FLAMING LIPS ‘Where the Viaduct Looms’ on CD and Vinyl – Out December 16th

and also THE WOMBATS ‘Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation’ on pink vinyl – Out April next year.

That’s it I think from me this week.
Oh, here’s the latest video Adam and Ray did on Friday last:

Sound, Ray. Back to you so. Cheers.

Thanks Shane!

Right last one for this week so is Integral for the 2nd of Dec…Rough trade records reissue two ARTHUR RUSSELL albums on vinyl” corn” and “ love is overtaking me” , there are a couple of BARRY ADAMSON reissues on Mute on coloured vinyl “ i will set you free” and “ know where to run”…BOYGENIUS ( BRIDGERS, DACUS and BAKER) release their 2018 6 track ep on cd, i thought it was out on cd at the time?, maybe tis a reissue, sales notes kind of say its a first timer on cd…i dunno…Knitting Factory have the 50th anniversary of “ afrodisiac” by FELA KUTI on coloured vinyl, KYLE DIXON & MICHAEL STEIN have the score to Stranger things part 4 across 2 volumes on coloured vinyl via Invada records. SUFJAN STEVENS releases classic song “ fourth of july” as a 7” red vinyl version…its reworked a bit i think…great song, stone wall classic of an album if i didn’t tell ye a 100 times before…( maybe not for everyone, but if you spend enough time with it, it will be your friend…dark and bleak album in parts but yet strangely comforting…this song encapsulates that i think…” were all gonna die” lyric is repeated over and over towards the end of the song ..bleak , but a truer lyric never wrote! But there’s a strange comfort to the song, even though its a song about death…dead mother talking to her son on her dead bed

“Shall we look at the moon, my little loon

Why do you cry?

Make the most of your life, while it is rife

While it is light…”

its so beautiful musically/vocally…am I losing it? Here tis to prove my madness

(171) Sufjan Stevens, “Fourth Of July” (Official Audio) – YouTube

One that was announced in the last week and one that we are really excited about is the news of the new THE MURDER CAPITAL album in Januray 2023..” gigi’s recovery” will be available to us on CD, std vinyl and indie shop only pink vinyl…3 and a half years since the stunning debut album,  we hugely believe in this band, the night of the launch in the crane lane will live long in the memory for those of us there…it was thursday the 15th of October and it was a  special night…the shopping centre in Douglas  was burnt down on Sat the 31st of Aug..highs and lows folks..sher thats life…here is the cracking new tune from the new album “ a thousand lives”

(121) The Murder Capital – A Thousand Lives (Official Video) – YouTube

Lots more on TMC over the next few months I’m sure..

The main week for plugging this week is the 21st of October releases, so Warner for the 21st have the brand new album from SIMPLE MINDS “ direction of the heart” on cd, deluxe cd and lp via BMG…its the bands 18th studio album…they were a massive stadium band at one point as ye know but still making good music…i think Kerr and Burchill live in Sicily or Sardania or somewhere like in Italy now…here is “ vision thing” from the new album..

(121) Simple Minds – Vision Thing (Official Audio) – YouTube

Cargo also has a brand new CD from JULIAN COPE “ england expectorates”.

Universal for the 21st Oct have quite a bit…none bigger than the new TAYLOR SWIFT album “ midnights” via EMI…it is available now on a host of physical formats….4 different cd variants as well as 4 different coloured lp variants. A few weeks ago i spoke about the biggest stars born in the music game this century and I forgot this lady…my bad…she fully deserves to be up there…always striving forwards ( sometimes against a shit storm) but always making credible well written music…she deserves a huge amount of respect…her last 3 or 4 albums have been really good. I vaguely remember back in the day something with Kanye West where he came on stage at the grammys or some awards ceremony and embarrassed her ( and himself ) after Taylor won the award by saying the Beyonce album, video or something was the best and not Taylors…she was only 17 at the time i think…some said after it was all orchestrated ..sher i dont know, she was only a kid. She has proven herself to be one of the 21st century greatest artists in my opinion…give her music a go sometime, the last 3 or 4 records are really good…shes a fan of the aul record shops as well so we are bound to like her then…some see us for what we are, some dont..Taylor is in our corner, we will take that. Going back to the greatest acts ever from a few weeks ago, i playfully left the forgotten man of music out..a Mr. David Bowie…sher i was only playing like..

EMI also has the new album from LOYLE CARNER “ hugo” on cd. Lp and indies lp version. I listen to a bit of bbc radio 6 most sundays and Loyle was doing a show back along for a few weeks…a right muso, smart, informative dude who loves his tunes…i think he said one day his name is Coyle Larner ( i could be wrong there) …here is “ hate” from the new album

(123) Loyle Carner – Hate – YouTube

There is a really limited coloured lp repress of KENDRICK LAMARs “ good kid m.A.A.d city” on the 21st, new album by CARLY RAE JEPSEN, the DAVID SYLVIAN vinyl reissue of “ blemish” finally makes its appearance on the 21st, UMC has a new SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES collection on vinyl “ all souls” , there is a first time on vinyl for DIANA ROSSs “ the greatest” as a limited clear 2 lp, bluenote have a couple of reissues on their classic vinyl series BIG JOHN PATTON “ oh baby” and STANLEY TURRENTINE “ common touch” , these are all analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes.

ANDREA, MATTEO & VIRGINIA BOCELLI has a christmas album on Decca “ a family christmas” Andrea with his 24 year old son and 10 year old daughter.

Primary Wave has OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN “ greatest hits 45th anniversary” edition on CD or 2LP.

Last one from Universal for the 21st of  OCT is the MICK HANLY & MICHEAL O DOMHNAILL album “ celtic folkweave”.
“Originally released in 1974 on Polydor Records, Mick Hanly & Mícháel Ó Domhnaill’s Celtic Folkweave is considered one of the most seminal albums in the Irish traditional music genre. The album features some of Ireland’s most well-regarded traditional musicians, including Mick Hanly, Mícháel Ó Domhnaill, Liam O’Flynn, Matt Molloy, Donal Lunny, Tommy Peoples, Declan McNeils & Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill. All of the musicians on Celtic Folkweave would go on to make notable contributions to the Irish and Celtic music genres, with Molloy, Lunny, Ní Dhomhnaill, Ó Domhnaill, and Peoples ending up in The Bothy Band, one of the most influential bands playing Irish traditional music in the 1970s. Remastered with additional tracks, this album features four bonus tracks, and the previously unreleased The Banks Of Sweet Primroses. The album artwork is designed by Des O’Meara & Partners and is centered around a triskelion graphic, a neolithic design featuring a triple spiral with rotational symmetry. Celtic Folkweave will be available on CD and LP.”

Sony for the 21st of Oct have the brand new album from A HA “ true north” on cd, std lp or indies only coloured lp…as a child was a bit of an A HA fan…had “ hunting high and low” and “ scoundrel days” on vinyl and used play them to death…i reckon i was around 12 or 13. 9th studio album this one…here is “ im in” from the new record…nice song.

Sony also have a new Meghan Trainor album on the 21st of Oct.

THE Orchard have a close to home release with the  good folks from GOD ALONE releasing their second album “ ETC” , this band has been talked about around Cork for a good few years now, we have stocked bits and pieces from them before…their star is rising all the time…fine musicians all of them…second album out now on Prosthetic records on CD and white with red splatter vinyl ( rebels like!) (124) GOD ALONE – Tsktsktsk (OFFICIAL VIDEO) – YouTube

Here is more on the band: “God Alone are a 5 piece math/noise rock band hailing from Cork, Ireland comprised of students of the CIT Cork School Of Music. They combine the dense atmosphere of post metal with elements of indie, hardcore, jazz and dance music. They self released their debut EP “INTIVIM” in late 2016 to critical acclaim and subsequently released their first full length release: titled “Poll na mBrón”, an album based on events and stories from Our Lady’s “Hospital” of Cork. Shortly after the release of their debut full length, they returned to the studio to create their most eclectic mix of sounds yet: their sophomore self titled EP, released in November 2019 which enabled them to embark on their first Ireland and UK headline tour. They have played numerous Irish festivals including Townlands Carnival, Monolith Festival and the Siege of Limerick and were recently crowned winners of the “Mammothfest Best Band Competition” of Mammothfest in Brighton, beating 200 bands across Ireland and the UK who battled through the heats. They are also currently booked to appear at ArcTanGent 2022 in the UK. Their self described “sad metal with some dancey bits” heard on their first single release “Dagda” has been described by Overblown as “a blast of visceral fury and dance floor filling interludes”. They have been featured and interviewed on numerous media platforms including Hot Press, Totally Cork, Kerrang and Metal Hammer. Their latest release will see them push the boundaries of metal even further, until it cracks. “The band’s new self-titled EP hits that sweet spot in a way that makes God Alone memorable from the get-go.” – KERRANG. “God Alone that you realize what makes the next generation of metal bands so special.” – METAL HAMMER.

The Orchard also for the 21st sees the release of the second collection of ‘B Sides and Rarities’ from Rumer on Vinyl,  a Very Limited Caroline Polachek 7″ (to which cuts will inevitably need to be made according to the rep) Rubblebucket with a Pink Swirl Vinyl and Per Husby Septett on BBE. We also have Metal from Inclination, Krisiun and EXHUMED.

Proper for the 21st of October has the new album by FREEDY JOHNSTON “ back on the road to you” on Forty below records…available as cd lp or indies only canary lp…some nice guests on the record like Aimee Mann and Susanna Hoffs…here is the title track from the album

(124) Freedy Johnston “Back on the Road to You” {Official Audio} – YouTube

Republic of Music for the end of the month have the debut album by THE MARY WALLOPERS on BC records..cd only for oct 28th…lp to follow in Jan, the usual plant delay stuff…this band is super folks…a right fusion of stuff but Irish trad/folk at its core..up the country they are from ..is it westmeath or Louth or  somewhere? Here is “ frost is all over” from the debut album…class…quality but don’t  take themselves too seriously i’d say, this band are the  berries also…i really like them.

Nice Irish flavour again to the newsletter, thats the way we like it anyway.

Integral for the 21st of Oct has quite a few…brand new albums, indie coloured versions on most of them…by ARCTIC MONKEYSDRY CLEANINGBIBIO..a new ep by ANNA CALVI, reissues by QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and THE LIBERTINES and also a live 3lp by MY MORNING JACKET.

Going to hand ye over to Shane now as he takes ye down the road with the interesting announcements etc…

Sound Ray!
How’s it going everyone? Hopefully as well as can be.
There’s a good few to mention this week again. Stuff is ramping up now with Santa around the corner (but Halloween first!)

First up is yet another new release from legend NEIL YOUNG. He’s with CRAZY HORSE again for a brand new album ‘World Record’, out on November 18th. Fair play to him, incredibly productive. Great passion in his lyrics. Here’s a song from it, https://youtu.be/aTouMWlq754

Second up is another legend, PAUL WELLER with an interesting compilation set ‘WILL OF THE PEOPLE’
Here’s a bit about it:
“Back in the autumn of 2003, the Fly On The Wall 3LP & 3CD collection brought together a wealth of Paul Weller solo recordings that stretched back to 1991. The B-sides, 12” EP tracks, single remixes and ‘live’ recordings featured all had one thing in common, namely that they hadn’t been included on any of his hugely successful solo albums. Furthermore, in many instances, they’d become highly sought after as the original 7”, 10”, 12” and CD singles and promo’s that first aired them were fetching significant sums from fans and collectors.

Will Of The People follows up Fly On The Wall and takes the listener through a similar mix of rarities, this time spanning the period 2002 to 2021. Like its predecessor not only does it make for some great listening but it’s a superb way to hear all those hard to get solo tracks that haven’t been featured on an album before. This collection has been compiled by Paul Weller himself and Paul has provided artwork ideas and sketches for the design. Alongside this Paul has written track-by-track sleeve notes. The release includes additional sleeve notes from writer and broadcaster John Wilson.”

Adam’s a big Weller fan so I’m sure he’ll be interested!

Thirdly is a band I like, saw them in Belfast a few years ago, PARAMORE. They have a brand new album called ‘This is Why’ coming out in February next year. Their sound has changed a bit over the last few albums from their earlier punkier days but the songs are still great. Here’s the title track from it, sounds good: https://youtu.be/xIYJ7VaSxYY

Fourth is a nice deluxe gatefold reissue of IRON MAIDEN’s ‘Number of the Beast’ (40th Anniversary). Classic album! 3 LP including a live concert and the inclusion of ‘Total Eclipse’ on the original album/tracklist. Bruce Dickinson’s first album with them. He’s another legend. It’s coming out on November 18th, bit pricey though.

Also coming out around the corner: a THAT PETROL EMOTION CD box set‘Homework Remixes’ by DAFT PUNK , another EDDIE PILLER compilation record, this time ‘Acid Jazz’
a 25th anniversary picture disc of SPICE GIRLS ‘Spice World’
A 6 LP or 3 CD set of B-sides and rarities from PJ Harvey (November 4th) (maybe should have mentioned that earlier)
A 20th anniversary deluxe reissue FLAMING LIPS ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’ on 5 LP or 6 CD sets, two FRANK BLACK and the Catholics releases, CD and red vinyl release from TOYAH,
Live from Lund 1970 2 CD album from PINK FLOYD and also a deluxe coloured edition of SHARON VAN ETTEN‘s latest album from this year.

Here are the lads with the video as well.

Back to you Ray so bud, cheers.

Thanks Shane!

Lastly so for this week is INTEGRAL for the 28th of Oct and sticking with the Irish flavour…( from an artistic /creative stand point i think we punch way above our weight for a small country…maybe tis green tinted glasses i dunno) Partisan records has the new AOIFE NESSA FRANCES album “ protector” on cd . lp or indies LP…here is “ emptiness follows” from the second album

(124) Aoife Nessa Frances – Emptiness Follows (Official Video) – YouTube

New albums also from JARV IS…, ASGEIRDEAD CROSS ( Supergroup) , NIGHTMARES ON WAX…there is a deluxe reissue of latest BICEP album “ isles” ( northern irish again) and reissue of MICK TAYLORS first 2 solo albums in one double vinyl  and lastly “ a modern jazz symposium of music & poetry” by CHARLES MINGUS mastered from analogue tapes by Kevin Gray.

Sin e for this weeks folks..

As Prince heard down here 30 odd years ago ( not our proudest moment, I remember being awkwardly  embarrassed by it as a 16 year old, now he was acting the bit of a langer on his king size bed with his guitar squealing for about 20 minutes)…. OLE OLE OLE OLE!

Thanks for listening

Ray Shane and young Adam.

(100) HamsandwicH – ELECTRO~WAVE (Official Video) – YouTube

Last week saw the announcements for Black Friday releases which follows the same rules as record shop day…Black Friday is the 25th of November…there are about 80 or so special titles released for the day…its first come first served and we cannot hold stuff for people and  we cant go online until 6 pm on the day in question…its aim is to drive footfall into the record shops…the full list for UK and Irish record shops is here

RSD Black Friday | Record Store Day

So if you are interested in something, drop us your wishlist on email and we will do our best to try and cover demand…wishlists need to be back by the 10th of October…also this year we will set up links on the website so folks have more info but the qtys will be at zero so you wont be able to buy anything but you can look…Shane and Adam should have some up on the site today so they will link them and we will add more over the coming weeks.

Here is the link for those on our website folks: BLACK FRIDAY RSD 2022 Products

So main week for this week is 7th October and we will start with Warner…sorry first…just got an email…new SMASHING PUMPKINS album for next year…its a 3cd ( 22 quid) or 4lp ( 110 quid) rock opera…i am not sure how many of the vinyl sets i shall end up getting…what i do know is that there are only 75 of each vinyl set coming into the country…so if this interests you,,drop us a mail and we will do our very best…Shane will have more info or there will be more info on the linky link…expensive again i’m afraid…

Anyways back to Warner for the 7th October and Cork’s own TALOS releases his third studio album now “ dear chaos” …guests include LISA HANNIGAN and SOHN…available via BMG  on CD and coke bottle clear vinyl…one of the biggest talents from our home county no doubt, here is “ all ours” from the new album

(100) Talos – All Ours (Official Music Video) – YouTube

The box set ( wonderful) for PINK FLOYD “ animals” hits the shelves on the 7th Oct also…it has a gatefold LP, CD, DVD and bluray …and the price is right in my opinion,,,the lp only release did really well last week when it came out and again the price was right, 25/26 quid, nice gatefold sleeve, felt like a sturdy product…id imagine Floyds royalty rates would be up there with anyones so begs the question…why are we paying 30 to 40 quid for a bog standard reissue when this record  can be on the shelf for 30/40 % less …the release gave the shop a buzz last week and the price had a lot to do with it….boxset out on the 7th anyway.

There is a brand new album by LAMB OF GOD via Nuclear Blast “ omens” on cd, std lp or indies white/blue marbled vinyl, there is the CD/DVD version of JETHRO TULLs “ thick as a brick” via PLG UK , SLADEs “ crackers” get a reissue on BMG on cd or indies splattered vinyl, SWEET release a “ greatest hits” 1969 to 1978 as a 2lp or as a 3cd and BMG continue with THE KINKS reissue series on vinyl…four more up next are “ face to face” , “ kinda kinks”, ‘something else by the kinks‘ and “ the kink kontroversy” .

National album day is also happening on Saturday the 15th of October but these albums can be preordered and can be kept aside. National album day is now in its 5th year and this year its theme is debut albums…we don’t have the list yet but titles will start appearing soon…to coincide with it ( well not really!!) we have a treat for live music fans …we have a bumper day in the shop on Saturday the 15th of October ( national album day) when we are thrilled to host not only one live band but 2 …and 2 of Cork and Irelands finest in our opinions…..so launching their debut album “ sucker for stars” we will have THE BURMA at 12 noon on the 15th…these lads are improving all the time and i for one really love their sound…i think this is 4th or 5th or maybe even 6th time the lads have played in the shop…few lineup changes a bit through the years but Tony, Peter and Cian have been mainstays  and getting tighter and tighter and better and better with each release. Their debut album will be available on the day on vinyl and CD and the lads will perform songs from the album and hopefully sign a f**king ton of albums after the performance…here is a little bit about the lads and the album…and here is “ dont believe your dreams” from the album

(100) The Burma – Don’t Believe Your Dreams (Official Music Video) – YouTube

“Bold indie rock trio The Burma will be sharing their long-awaited album, Sucker For Stars, on the 14th of

October via The Burma Music. With the release of their LP, listeners are invited to discover the

yet-to-be-heard title track, which will be featured alongside the band’s chart-topping single ‘Don’t Believe

Your Dreams’, a record that rose to No.1 in the Irish iTunes single charts and landed at No.6 in The

Homegrown Top 20 in the Official Charts. Also taken from their album is the single ‘Sleepers’, which

climbed its way to No.4 on Irish iTunes and No.12 on The Homegrown Top 20. It is unsurprising that

noteworthy tastemaker publications have praised the band, namely The Spill Magazine, Variance

Magazine, RTÉ XM, CLASH Magazine, Rolling Stone India, Hot Press and Medium.com/ Pop Off, to

mention a few, and received extensive national airplay, collecting over 140k streams across platforms.

Sucker For Stars is a rocker’s fantasy. Like a new band poster, the album offers fans a vivid image of what

The Burma stands for as a band, printed in high gloss. A few of the featured tracks thrash lawlessly, inciting

miniature musical riots while other ballad-type records live together in gently strummed harmony. With only

guitars, drums, and vocals, The Burma has written an album that is rich and dynamic.

Proudly local, the band takes its name from The Burma Steps in Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland. Its members are

Tony O’Donovan (on vocals) and Peter Piggott (on guitar) who are both from Cobh as well as Cian

Doherty (on drums) who is from Doolin Co. Clare. Drawing inspiration from The Strokes, Tame Impala

and Daft Punk, the band has created a signature sound comparable to Glass Animals, MGMT and Foster

the People.

The Burma muses on the making of their LP: “Sucker For Stars is a body of work which we officially started

two and a half years ago – although it‘s been much longer in the making. The album represents two different

sounds for us – the first, made up of 6 older songs which we’ve held onto over the years- and then 5 brand

new songs showing where our writing style is at in its current form. It’s a milestone moment for us to have

our debut album out in the world, it’s been a long time coming.”

Try get in and support the lads if ye can!!

Followed up then on Saturday the 15th of October by THE SHAKER HYMN the bloody wonderful Shaker hymn …the lads were to play a few months back the day after their third studio album came out but Covid struck and cancelled all their planned shows that week…a balls for them…true to their word though they said they would be back and they are…Saturday the 15th at 1pm…playing songs from the wonderful new album” the last concorde”..here is the third single from the album “ wild silk”
(100) The Shaker Hymn – Wild Silk (Official Video) – YouTube

The siopa would really appreciate if the community came out in support of these two local original bands …so sat the 15th 12 noon THE BURMA, 1PM  THE SHAKER HYMN…mark in the book, speak to the boss, call off the match, leave the bowie reissue for another day..do what needs to be done folks..sat 15th Oct!

Quick one regards National album Day…Warner were on and need figures back by next Monday so if anyone wants any of these please email us back by Sunday…thanks!!

Sony for the 7th October has the new BEYONCÉ vinyl “ renaissance” as a 2lp deluxe black vinyl…we wont talk about the price Bruno. Speaking of Sony i got a call from a regular lad last wednesday to tell me the sad news that his friend Maurice Byrne and my rep for years from Sony had passed away…id say Maurice was only about 70, and suffered a lot with ill health in recent years..id say he left Sony about 10 or 12 years ago now and the last time i spoke to him was after the fire when Dave put us in touch.  I was only a kid when i opened the shop but Maurice was one of those who looked after me….got me credit with Sony which was hugely important for a green kid opening a shop..he always visited the siopa when he was down and he never steered me wrong when doing my orders ..he nearly done them for me to be honest with his Sony stuff and others at times and he nearly always hit the nail on the head..( i still make a balls of it at times!)…would be safe to say that he didn’t suffer fools gladly ( well bar this green one) but he always had my back…rest in peace Maur.

The Orchard for the 7th of October  sees the release of the new album by The Cult on CD or LP..THE LIMITED INDIES LP IS SOLD OUT i think but i will try for more so if interested shout! , the latest Courtney Marie Andrews on Fat Possum with a Limited Red Vinyl and the Various Artists / Songs Of John Prine Vol 2 tribute album with a Limited Blue Vinyl.

The Orchard also have the return of Broken Bells with third album “Into The Blue” including a Ltd Purple Vinyl, Vol 2 of Bob Weir’s ‘Live In Colorado’ album (Vol 1 was released earlier this year), a new Dungen album from Mexican Summer with a Limited Burgundy Vinyl, the new Dayglow with the Vinyls to follow in January 2023, a new Ginger Wildheart & The Sinners on Wicked Cool Records and Hip hop from Flohio with “Out Of Heart”.

For  Metal fans, this week the Orchard has new albums by Incantation, Goatwhore and Queensryche which comes as a cd, a deluxe clamshell box edition or as a 2lp.

The main one to note from Proper for the 7th Oct is the the 10th anniversary double lp vinyl repress of Mac Millers mixtape “ macadelic”.

Universal for the 7th of Oct have the new PAUL HEATON/JACQUI ABBOTT album “ N.K Pop”  on Emi..they’re 5th together now…super they are…available on cd and lp…Heaton is the berries i think, there is a super documentary out there on him…from hull to something is the title, well worth a watch…there is a piece in it how Jacqui Abbott joined the beautiful south…she was back at a house party when she was 17 and Heaton was there, her friends were saying “ go on you should sing for him” and she did…she said, and she was being kind id say that he had a few drinks on board …that was that anyway until a year and a half later when Heaton said to his mate do you remember that night back in so and sos when this girl sang…the pal was going “ huh” …heaton “ id like you to find her”,  pal was going “ huh” …he tracked her down anyway while she was stocking shelves in Sainsburys and said  do you remember the night you sang for Paul Heaton …she was like  “huh but yeah”…pal “ he would like if you would do an audition” and that was that as they would say! Here is “ too much for one ( not enough for two) “…yet another top tune from a pair of maestros.

(102) Paul Heaton, Jacqui Abbott – Too Much For One (Not Enough For Two) – YouTube

Speaking of maestros …Mr. Mark Knopfler has a new boxset out on the 7th Oct via UMC “ studio albums 2009 to 2018” limited 6 cd or 9 lp sets,  gathering together the second half of his solo songbook with his more recent studio albums, to add to last year’s ’96 – 2007 collection. The box will include Get Lucky (2009), Privateering (2012), Tracker (2015) and his latest release Down The Road Wherever (2018) plus a collection of studio b-sides and bonus tracks and two previously unreleased songs – ‘Back In The Day’ and ‘Precious Voice From Heaven’. The audio quality has been overseen by the original mastering engineer Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering, while vinyl was cut by Bernie Grundman. 9LP Boxset – 9LP collection, pressed on 180g black vinyl and housed in a rigid outer slipcase. Includes 5 embossed art prints of each of the original covers.

6CD Boxset – 6CD collection in clamshell-style box. Original studio albums housed in gatefold sleeves with lyric sheets. Bonus disc in single sleeve wallet with lyrics insert. Plus 5 art cards.

JAPAN reissue via UMC as a half speed master “ exorcising ghosts” career spanning best of , there is an expensive deluxe 30th anniversary box set version of THE TRAGICALLY HIP “ fully completely” , LUDOVICO EINAUDI has a dlp “ reimagined 1 & 2”  out on the 7th, new albums out also from EASY LIFE and ACTION BRONSON, Decca has HANS ZIMMER “ around the world in 80 days” ost on vinyl, brand new HILARY HAHN on Deutsche Grammophon on cd and lp and last but not least the next two releases in the Bluenote tone poet series with KENNY BURRELL self titled album and GRANT GREEN “ feeling the spirit” .

Sometimes ye might feel that i put the aul invisibility cloak on.. but …yes but…in my defense just telling ye the way it is…Universal , Sony , Integral and Cargo all come out of the one distribution centre warehouse in Aylesbury in the UK ( Cinram) …now Cinram only in the last few weeks were bought out by Utopia distribution services limited , a group company of Utopia Music…it reads as a really positive thing, sher i dont know, way above my pay grade…anyway says he, there has been teething problems…orders placed 9 days ago , not landed, cant get invoices for stuff that has landed…yada yada yada…cloak going on.

Integral so for the 7th of Oct has new albums from GILLA BANDBONNY LIGHT HORSEMAN and ALVVAYS as well as THE COMMUNARDS reissue of “ red”.

Going to hand ye to Shane now as he takes ye on another magical mystery tour…roll up roll up.
Sound, Ray!

How’s it going everyone? Hope ye’re well.

Well said on the pricing Ray. I agree. The last three Pink Floyd reissues (Piper, Saucerful and Animals) have all been very reasonable. And they’ve been really well remastered and sound great.
Don’t know why Beyonce has to be three times the price.

Anyway, a few to mention as always for down the road a bit.
First up as Ray mentioned, the SMASHING PUMPKINS have a brand new one coming out called ‘ATUM’. Over 30 songs on it.
Here’s a bit about it:

  • The album is a rock opera presented in three acts by inimitable American rock band The Smashing Pumpkins.

Not out for a while yet, April next year, but one to wait for. To be honest, Billy Corgan’s voice grates on me a bit at times but they are legends of the 90s no doubt and when they hit the spot, it’s great.

SPOON’s excellent album from earlier this year ‘Lucifer on the Sofa’ is getting a reworking and will be called ‘Lucifer on the Moon‘. Out on the 4th of November.

ECHO & The Bunnymen are reissuing ‘Evergreen’. We will have it on CD and vinyl.

DINOSAUR JR. are also bringing out a reissue in ‘Beyond’ for its 15th anniversary. There will be a really limited green and purple pressing of it with a bonus 7 inch. Out at the end of October. Great band.

Also coming soon: FRANK SINATRA – ‘Collected’ on gold coloured vinyl (a nice collection of his songs), a live NIGHTMARES ON WAX release and a live one too (from Chicago) by MY MORNING JACKET on 3 lp orange vinyl.

That’s about it I think for this week from me. Looking forward to hearing the new HAMSANDWICH and BURMA too, Ray.

Back to you so.

Thanks Shane.

Right last one for this week so is Integral for the 14th Oct…there is a new BILL CALLAHAN album “ yti…” its reality written backwards…again above my skill set…cd is 14th oct, lp is not till feb next year though…out via Drag city.

CAN live in cuxhaven 1976 …third in the live series now, out on Mute on CD and indies blue vinyl…a couple of debut album reissues for National Album Day ( 15th oct) by SMITH & BURROWS” funny looking angels” as a picture disc ( Tom Smith of Editors and Andy Burrowes of Razorlight amongst others) and THE NATIONAL self titled debut also as a white vinyl version…i suppose the National give hope to bands with an age profile  in their mid to late 20s to keep chasing the dream…this album was made and released and toured  whilst all the band held down full time jobs ( you know what i mean)…keep believing and creating i suppose, you just never know.

Sin sin for this week so folks

Thanks for listening as always

Ray, Shane and young Adam.

We received an email yesterday regarding the George Michael older reissue…sorry now folks, it is moved to the 30th of Sept…here’s the message..

“In light of the very sad news of Her Majesty the Queen’s passing and as a mark of respect during the nation’s period of mourning, the re-release of George Michael’s Older will be moved to September 30th.”

Another one moved to the 30th is reissue of Wilcos yankee foxtrot hotel.

Releases then for the 23rd of sept include…

(87) PIXIES – There’s A Moon On (Official Lyric Video) – YouTube

The new SLIPKNOT album is out on the 30th september also “ the end so far” via Roadrunner  records…cd, indies yellow vinyl or standard clear vinyl on this one.

(87) Midnight Walker – YouTube

There is an ERIC CLAPTON 12 LP boxset coming out via Reprise “ the complete reprise studio albums” which has his first six solo studio albums remastered and an LP of rarities from the 80s also…pity on the price in my opinion…100 quid too dear in my opinion, unless i’m missing something.

The new LAMBCHOP album is out on City Slang on the 30th.

A little grumble at the industry here now…the whole direct to consumer stuff is becoming more prevalent all the time…the industry from where i sit has always had challenges but for your suppliers to be competing with you,  cannibalizing the market,  taking your customers is in reality very harsh…folks want to support the independent shops but we appreciate fully when the record company does exclusive D2Cs that folks go that way…we get it from a customer’s point of view but from a record companies point of view , tis harsh…we advertise and display and plug record companies wares 360 odd days a year……its a two way street to be fair like all relationships but there’s a sense as we would say in Cork “ that she’s doing the dirt on him”  ..  when there is a bit of cream to be had, the record companies do a D2C …(a lot of music retail websites also are owned or partly owned by record companies so folks may not even know they are buying direct from the record company) …sher it is what it is at this stage and i dont see it changing…a little grumble is all!

Sony for the 30th has the new BUDDY GUY cd ” the blues don’t lie”

The Orchard for the 30th sept  sees the release of the latest OFF! album from former Black Flag and Circle Jerks member Keith Morris with Purple Vinyl, two ‘Live At Levitation’ releases from Moon Duo and Psychic Ills, both with 2 Coloured Vinyls to choose from, and Julie Odell’s latest album ‘Autumn Eve’, again with Coloured Vinyl. Going to hand over to Shane now as he takes ye down the road with some release and announcements etc..Cheers, Ray!
How’s it going all? Hope the week is going well for ye.
I agree Ray about the D2C stuff, it’s a shame. The Alice in Chains box set is one I might have got if it came into the shop.

A few decent releases once again coming down the yellow brick road worth a mention.

First up is a 30th anniversary picture disc of Madonna’s ‘Erotica’ which is out on October 21st. It was originally banned from general release so will be a nice one to get now.
We have a few die-hard Madonna fans who call to the shop and buy nearly everything she releases.

Some of her stuff is very collectable too and shoots up in value online in the years after they come out. Whether you agree with that or not is another thing, but I guess that’s the nature of collectables and vinyl definitely has a bit of that.

Second up is the new album from WEYES BLOOD ‘And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow’ coming out in November. Her last one was very good so looking forward to hearing this one. Here’s ‘It’s not just me, it’s everybody’ from it: https://youtu.be/4d_OwQxfuMY
We will be getting the indies clear vinyl version of it but quantities are limited so fastest finger first if interested.

Another talented songwriter is ROZI PLAIN and she has a new album coming called ‘Prize’ but it’s not out until January, so a while to save up.

Those are the three main ones but also coming soon: a JIMI HENDRIX Live album on CD and vinyl, more formats of the KISS ‘Creatures of the Night’ anniversary reissue, a DOLLY PARTON Best Of a new album by WARHAUS and a half speed remaster/reissue of THE YARDBIRDS ‘Yardbirds’ featuring their original lineup.

Here’s the link to THE BEATLES – Revolver formats on our site, think I might have missed it last week.

Oh and Adam and Ray are back with d’video: https://youtu.be/SoGiysD9gVU

Back to you Ray so!

Thanks Shane!

(90) Gilla Band – Backwash – YouTube

(90) Alvvays – Pharmacist [Official Audio] – YouTube

THE COMMUNARDS via London records have a 35th anniversary edition of “ red” as a double cd, a single black lp or gatefold DLP red and white coloured vinyl, there is a reissue of STEVE REID ( drummer) “ odyssey of the oblong square” on indies vinyl via Soul Jazz and there are  cd and vinyl reprints of the last three RECOIL albums ( Alan Wilders music project mainly after he left Depeche Mode)…the lps are coloured versions of “ liquid” “ subhuman” and “ unsound methods” .

REPUBLIC OF MUSIC ( one of my big brexit problem companies to be honest…works fine if i place decent orders but any order less than 5 albums seems to get lost coming across the irish sea…some sharks and pirates in those waters me thinks)…anyways this one will be fine…City Slang have the new LAMBCHOP album “ the bible” on cd and two vinyl formats… 2LP  is  pressed on 140g black double vinyl, Side 4 w/ Etching, comes in Gatefold w/ printed inner sleeves. (73) Lambchop – Police Dog Blues (Official Video) – YouTube

Main point of attack from the “AD” this week is sept 23rd…first up is Warner so and they have loads of releases for the 23rd, most are run of the mill reissues to be honest..a few more interesting bits as well i suppose…ill start rattling them off i suppose…new 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER album on Bmg deluxe cd and indies brown lp, new BILLY IDOL EP on CD only for now again BMG, BLUR “ bustin & dronin” reissue on blk vinyl or cd via PLG UK ( Parlophone) there was a fancier version out for rsd you may recall, BRUCE DICKINSON “ accident of birth” 2lp red & yellow splatter reissue…interesting one next…CHICK COREA “ the montreaux years” on cd and lp again via BMG…Chicks best bits from down the years of the festival..new DANIEL LANOIS CD “ player, piano” …here is “ my all” from it…lovely tune

(74) MY ALL / Daniel Lanois / Player, Piano – YouTube

BMG have some DIO at Donington reissues as lenticular cd editions or 2lp versions…1983 and 1987 covered here..also “ killing the dragon” lp reissue, GRATEFUL DEAD live from Madison square garden in 1981 as a 3CD…Rhino /Elecktra has the next JONI MITCHELL boxsets…” the asylum years 1972 to 1975” as 4 cd set or a 5 lp set…i think Joni is my numero uno female solo recording artist of all time..pour moi anyway, each to their ownthough as my mam would say…it is a slight pity/big pity actually on the price of the lp set…it is expensive …shop not running out to buy yachts, its  running just over 20% profit margin for the shop…there is a special vinyl version of the MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS album “ electra heart” as platinum blonde deluxe magenta version, new MARK OWEN album on cd or lp, MOTLEY CRUE reissues of “ shout at the devil” and “ theatre of pain” on cd or lp and MOTORHEAD reissue “ hammered” on gold and black splatter vinyl, BMG also have 40th anniversary reissues of MOTORHEADs “ iron fist” on 2cd, 3lp or indies only black & blue swirl vinyl…Neil young “ time fades away” cd reissue, new NILS FRAHM album “ music for animals” on 3cd or 4lp via BMG…heres a tune from it

(74) Nils Frahm – Right Right Right (Official Audio) – YouTube

Theres a  STONE TEMPLE PILOTS boxset of “ core” and lastly a few VENOM reissues.

Had a few pints with the Bob man there recently as he was home (went to see the wonderful SHAKER HYMN in Coughlans…THE SHAKER HYMN will play an instore with us on Sat 15th October , more on that closer to the time…mark it in the diaries!)…i know loads of ye ask for Bob so i just gave him a general “everyone is asking for you kid” …he is in flying form to be fair, loves the job, seems to be getting on really well there..he is enjoying life, there is another couple of Cork lads working with Warner as well so that’s nice for him. He told me but i’m still not really sure what he does but he is kept busy with organizing anniversary reissues for ye amongst a host of other jobs…seeing as we have a BEATLES announcement today…the Bobs and his team went to Abbey road studios for a night out … he was in studio 2 where all the Beatles records were cut..they had a half speed vinyl cutting demo with Miles Showell!! How feckin bad like…should have gone for the job meself! …living the dream a bit id say and no better boy…he sends his love yer way as well

So folks, Shane and  Adam also…just a quick note on the revolver announcement…best prices on the website are 195 for the vinyl box set and 142 for the cd boxset…if collecting from the siopa and we aren’t paying the shipping costs then best prices from the shop floor are 135 for the cd boxset and 188 for the vinyl box set…i was a little late getting on the beatles, i think i was 15 before i properly started listening to them and Revolver was my introduction…some introduction…hooked lined and sunk i was…Shane will have more on the formats etc later on..

Proper for the 23rd sept has two SANDY DENNY reissues on vinyl…long out of print debut solo album “ the north star grassman and the ravens” and second album “ sandy” via their own proper records label…the vinyl release for the new CASS MCCOMBS is the 23rd of sept also ( getting great reviews this is)…btw the latest KEVIN MORBY album is really good i think…there’s a new album by the CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE TRIO “ out here” on Mack Avenue records and last but certainly not least from Proper on the 23rd sept is the second album by SORCHA RICHARDSON “ smiling like an idiot” on cd and lp via Faction records..here is “ shark eyes” from the album

(74) Sorcha Richardson – Shark Eyes (Official Video) – YouTube

Sony for the 23rd of Sept have a big reissue with ALICE IN CHAINS second album “ dirt”  being reissued on double black vinyl and bricks and mortar shops only double yellow vinyl

…fine record…has not been in the shop for 4 or 5 years id say when Music on Vinyl had a repress of it…Layne was a great singer but his life was cut way to short, where we once again unfortunately saw  the needle and the damage done…himself and Mark Lanegan were great pals but they got in some situations due to their drug habit…if it wasn’t so serious it would nearly be funny…here is “ down in a hole” from the album

(74) Alice In Chains – Down in a Hole (Official HD Video) – YouTube

Sony also have THE WEDDING PRESENT “ hit parade” 2lp and a cd…2022 marks the 30th Anniversary of the original Hit Parade single releases, where The Wedding Present released a limited edition 7” single every month throughout 1992 with each making the UK Top 30, equalling the then record of Most UK Top 30 Hits in a year set by Elvis. An original Gedge composition on the a-side of each single was accompanied by a cover version on the b-side encompassing a wide range of artists from Neil Young and The Go-Betweens to Isaac Hayes and Elton John.

Both of the aforementioned bands debut albums were Mercury prize nominated.

Next one up on Because music and after 4 years is the third studio album by CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS “ REDCAR les adorables etoiles” on cd, 2lp blk or 2lp red. Brave in today’s world to release an album in your native tongue if not English, but CATQ has always done their own thing ..here is cracking new tune from the album “ je te vois enfin”

(74) Christine and the Queens – Je te vois enfin (Lyric Video) – YouTube

There is a brand new KING GIZZARD AND THE LIZZARD WIZZARD studio album “ omnium gatherum” and is on 2 lp or lucky dip colour 2lp…the colour ones fairly limited id say…there first album in 2022 and the first time the 6 band members got in a space together in over 2 years…they are calling it their jamming album…vinyl only im afraid, dont know why that is, dont agree with it, tis daft not releasing a CD, maybe twil be later in the year..tracks are long i wont link one!

UMC are doing represses of ABBA “ gold” as double gold vinyl or as a picture disc double…a bit on the pricey side again though, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra are reimagining 25 years of BOND themes via Decca on cd or lp, there is a BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE b sides and rarities cd out on the 23rd Sept , a new CHARLES LLOYD on Bluenote ,,the second in his trios albums “ ocean” and there is a new KILLING JOKE EP with the original line up.

The PATRICK KAVANAGH release is also on the 23rd on CD and LP, Originally released on Claddagh Records in 1964, the double album also features the only recording of the revered Irish poet reading his most celebrated poems. Now remastered and reimagined this new two-part album features the original recordings and Kavanagh’s poetry read by Bono, Hozier, Imelda May, Liam Neeson, Jessie Buckley, Aidan Gillen, Lisa McGee, Lisa Hannigan, President Michael D. Higgins, Evanna Lynch, Sharon Corr, Kathleen Watkins, Christy Moore, Rachael Blackmore and Aisling Bea set to a truly wonderful music composition.

The physical formats of this album include a booklet containing all the poetry one will hear on the album. The vinyl format of this release contains two unique vinyl sleeves. The first hosts a printed collage of sketches of all the celebrated readers around Patrick Kavanagh, with Kavanagh himself visible through the gold-foil cut-out square on the cover itself. The second vinyl sleeve is an exact replica of the original 1964 release.

I hope the newsletters aren’t becoming too long-winded folks, I sense they might be..i suppose we be trying to get the info to ye, trying to sell to ye as ye know is the truth of it but dont want to bore ye either….anyways for now.

LP One: Revolver (New stereo mix)

LP Two: Sessions One

LP Three: Sessions Two

LP Four: Revolver (Original mono master)”

That’s for the 4 LP Super Deluxe version.
Classic album of course. It’s really hard to choose between their last 6 or 7 albums.I really like ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ even though it’s not technically an official album or wasn;t originally.
‘Revolver’ is top notch too though!
This will be out at the end of October. We will be getting it on 1 LP, 1 CD, 2 CD, 5 CD and the Super deluxe.

Next up is Irish legend JOHN SPILLANE’s latest release ‘In Another Light’. A live performance from Cork Opera House last November with Pauline Scanlon and the Concert Orchestra. With a range of his tracks spanning from the 80s to 2020.
John is an absolute top performer and songwriter and a sound fella too.
That’s coming in October. We have the CD for now but there will be vinyl too at a later date.

Also coming down the road, but a good way down it, is the new GORILLAZ album ‘Cracker Island’ out next February. Good band. I believe some of ye went to see them recently and they were great.
We’ll have the indies neon purple coloured vinyl of it.

Also coming out worth a mention, Irish post punky artist MERYL STREEK has a debut album ‘796’ coming out on November 4th. We’ll have it on green vinyl.
Here is ‘Death to the Landlord’ from it: https://youtu.be/GTkkT_rwXUo

There’s a Cliff Richard Christmas record coming, UK Eurovision lad SAM RYDER is releasing his debut album ‘There’s Nothing But Space, Man!’ and VOICE OF THE BEEHIVE are reissuing ‘Let It Bee’.

So main week for this week are the releases for the 26th August …the year is just flying….the summer has been iffy business wise but releases are iffy also…should bounce back in another 5 or 6 weeks and be fairly good for the end of the year hopefully anyway…;pricing aint gonna help retailers when things are quiet…the high 30s euro price tag for a coloured reissue is just too steep in my opinion and folks ain’t gonna pay it…your diehards of a band/artist might but it wont cross over and we will sell much less…its probably a bit different for the labels as they simply cannot get things pressed so for them , they can only sell so many anyway as they cant get more pressed for circa 8/9 months now…look tis a mess, but when things settle, i hope pricing will settle a bit also…Anti doing a few TOM WAITS coloured reissues and high 30s, early 40s price tags…anyway the 26th of August.

There is a vinyl reissue of THE CUREs “ wish” album coming down the road also….the lads mentioned the cd formats last week but an LP release also happening in November…numbers are tight enough on it so if interested give us a nod or buy from the site.

Anyways back to releases for the 26th of August Warner has the brand new studio album from MUSE…their ninth album now…available on CD . LP and an indies only cream LP….pricing good on this one with me giving out! i think history will be really kind to MATT BELLAMY and he will be remembered for a long time as a fabulous musician…fine band, diverse in styles and genres, incredible live…here is the title track from the new album…queen/glam rock feel to it…catchy !!

“Blondie mark a career milestone with the release of the first ever authorised and in depth archive in their history. This release features 124 tracks, 36 of which are previously unreleased. Remastered from the original analog tapes and cut at Abbey Road Studios, this expansive box set is available on four formats (Super Deluxe Collectors’ Edition, Deluxe 4LP, Deluxe 8CD and 3CD editions). Housed in a foil-wrapped carton, Against The Odds includes extensive liner notes by Erin Osmon, track by track commentary from Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, Clem Burke, Jimmy Destri, Nigel Harrison, Frank Infante, and Gary Valentine, essays by producers Mike Chapman, Richard Gottehrer, and Ken Shipley, a 120-page illustrated discography, and hundreds of period photographs.

This archive box set—the first band-authorised collection in their 50 year history—is a collective moment to celebrate their legacy and be immersed into Blondie’s genre-bending sonic universe, including their first six studio albums recorded for Chrysalis; Blondie, Plastic Letters, Parallel Lines, Eat To The Beat, Autoamerican, The Hunter, and in turn their catalogue of era-defining hits “Heart Of Glass,” “Atomic,” “Tide Is High,” “Sunday Girl,” “Rapture,” and “Call Me.” These six groundbreaking albums have been expanded to include over four dozen demos (including the group’s first-ever recording session), alternate versions, and studio outtakes, creating a near-complete document of Blondie’s studio sessions prior to their 1982 hiatus.

Against The Odds has an unusual beginning; for nearly two decades, the bulk of Blondie’s audio and visual archive sat inside in Chris Stein’s unassuming barn just outside Woodstock, New York. One hundred reel-to-reel tapes, half a dozen cassettes, a few storage tubs crammed with records, bits of promotional flotsam, flyers, a stray Warhol print, and mirrored dressing room signage from four sold-out January 1980 nights at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. All of it lay in wait through twenty humid summers, twenty frigid winters”

UNIVERSAL also for the 26th of August has the vinyl release of the new KENDRICK album “ mr morale and the big steppers” via interscope.

Bastille have a new album on EMI on 2CD or limited vinyl.

Republic has the new MARCUS KING album but CD ONLY for now…LP will follow in a few months…its called “ young blood” and is produced by Dan Auerbach…King is one of the best blues musicians on the circuit at the moment…real talented…here is “ blood on the tracks” original from the new album

(44) Marcus King – Blood On The Tracks (Official Audio) – YouTube

VALERIE JUNE has an 8 track covers album out via Fantasy of her favourite songs…available on CD and indies only yellow lp…LP is expensive really, which is a shame…i told this before but sher its a good story and cos i enjoyed it so much im gonna tell it again…myself and the Bob man saw her perform in St Lukes a few years…we met her after…ahh she was lovely, bit of an earthy character…10 seconds into the conversation Valerie turns to Bob…”Wow, your hair is just fab”…ill tell it again im sure, it makes me chuckle. Here is Valerie’s cover of Mazzy StarrS “ FADE INTO YOU”..as good as Bobs hair

Lastly from UNI for the 26th of Aug is the 4th installment from TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND “ I AM THE MOON” part 4…LP version of part 4 is out on 9th sept also…need my order in this week, so if anyone interested give us an auld email…not sure what the story is with the first 3 volumes on vinyl.

The Orchard for the 26th Aug  sees the release of the Vinyl version of Janis Ian’s ‘The Light At The End Of The Line’ (the CD was released in February), a repress of John Prine’s 1984 album ‘Aimless Love’ and early 80s Scottish new wave/post-punk legends Altered Images first album since 1983.

We also have the debut EP from Mychelle from the label who bought us Jorja Smith, a new Melting Palms album with 3 Vinyl formats, Lisa Gerrard with ‘Exaudia’, the return of Lonely Robot on Insideout, Metal from Obituary, Bastard Noise & Merzbow and Thoughtcrimes .

Cargo for the 26th Aug has a few well worth a mention , firstly is Cork based ELAINE HOWLEY  with her debut solo album “ the distance between heart and mouth” …here is more about the album.

“Touch Sensitive Records proudly presents the Cork-based musician Elaine Howley’s debut solo album The Distance Between Heart and Mouth. The product of an audio diary kept on a 4 track cassette machine throughout 2019 and 2020, the album recreates the intimacy of a radio show filled with Howley’s favourite sounds, pallets, and textures; effortlessly joining the dots between pop and experimentation, summoning the kaleidoscopic world of Trish Keenan & Broadcast, the bruised lo-fi soul of Tirzah and the dubbed-out blues of Leslie Winer. Over nine patient, spontaneous self-recorded and produced tracks, Elaine Howley traces the outline of a small space that could be considered one of the longest journeys to be taken – The Distance Between Heart And Mouth.  As a member of Crevice, Howlbux and, perhaps most notably, psychedelic rock group The Altered Hours, Elaine Howley is renowned as a singular voice in the Irish underground.  The Distance Between Heart And Mouth. TRACKLIST: 1. Silent Talk  2. Autumn Speak  3. Archeological Longing  4. See Saw Seen  5. To The Test  6. Buried Way Out  7. Person Count  8. Song For Mary Black  9. SoSo  “

Here is “ silent talk” from the debut solo album

Nearly forgot kid…a week off and the brain goes a little to mushy peas…going to hand ye to Shane now as he takes ye down the road with announcements etc..

Sound, Ray! No bother about us filling in for you on the hols, well deserved, and as you said life is short!
How’s it going everyone? Hope yere good. Nice bit of sun this week for listening to music outside in, enjoy it! Bit jealous of our dogs sunbathing out the back at the moment though!

Not a huge amount to mention this week compared to the last few weeks actually.

One to definitely mention is a class one, JOHN COLTRANE – Blue Train is getting a special Tone Poet Series reissue on 2 CD, 1 LP Mono and 2 LP Stereo. No doubt one of his best albums, this is a really well pressed reissue from the analog tapes. On the 2 LP and 2 CD, there’s an extra album of unreleased outtakes/alternate versions and a booklet. Bit pricey but the quality is very high.
That will be released next month. Oh and numbers are limited with it, so if interested probably best to order from the website link above as we might miss the email for a bit.

A couple releases (Tom Waits) were very limited and we didn’t get any, which is why there’s not many to mention this week.

BRIGHT EYES are releasing 3 reissues, ‘Digital Ash in a Digital Urn‘, ‘I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning‘ and ‘LIFTED..’ plus a companion 12 inch record for each with re-worked versions of songs on them.
They will be out in November.

Lastly, we will be getting the vinyl version of Beyoncé’s new album – ‘Renaissance’ which comes with a special booklet.

That’s all actually from me. Back to the boss-man.

Thanks Shane!

Right last one for this week is Integral for the 2nd Sept…Duophonic/Warp records release the 5th installment of STEREOLAB “ pulse of the early brain – switched on volume 5” on indies 2 cd, 3lp or indies 3lp….lps include codes.

Partisan reissue on its 10th ann HEARTLESS BASTARDS “ arrow “ and there is a new BEN SALISBURY/GEOFF BARROW soundtrack to “ archive 81”.

First up this week is a big one, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS’ 2nd album of the year, ‘Return of the Dream Canteen’ is going to be released in mid October. Great to see/hear. I enjoyed the one from earlier in the year. They seem to be in a creative sweet spot at the moment with John Frusciante back on board.

Second to mention, is an interesting collaboration album between VIEUX FARKA TOURÉ & KHRUANGBIN where they cover tracks by Vieux’s father Ali. The Buckley clan are fans of Khruangbin. Should be a good listen! That’s out on September 23rd.
Here’s ‘Savanne’ from it: https://youtu.be/UpTWs5H4DdE

The album was recorded over the past two years in De Bunker Studio, East Cork with Dave O’Connell at the controls.

Great pity THE SHAKER HYMN in store didn’t go ahead last week but im sure we will have the lads in again sometime soon enough…we hope to make it up a bit this Saturday the 9th of July at 3.30pm when we welcome KEELEY and her band to the siopa for her very first instore so lets hope we can make it a special one. Keeley, from where i can see does everything right in getting her image and profile out,  but man oh man can the songs back it up…i’m addicted to the new mini album the last week or so since it landed in the shop…( this is the mini album Keeley and her band will be promoting with the instore,  “ drawn to the flame” and it’s super, cd only for now…but there is also a 10” vinyl ep from last year “ brave warrior” in the shop). Fair commitment for her and the band to come to the shop and play for us ( they have a gig in the Crane later on Saturday night) so I hope the community will come out in support of it. Keeley does a great social media and seems to be really supportive of record shops…every little gain in this game is important for an upcoming artist and this band are ticking all the boxes…but most important the tunes stack up…here is “ shadows on the hill” form the super new mini album

Ye remember me banging on about THE MURDER CAPITAL this time three years ago when we were putting on an “ outstore” for their debut album release…this for me could be up there as well…i think it will be one we will be talking about in three years time. Really hope some of you will make it in on Saturday, it’s a bit later at 3.30 so take note of the time…3,30 pm Saturday the 9th. So KEELEY and her band ( four piece) will play a 30 minute set for us and sign copies of the new mini album cd or 10” ep or both! And have the chats as well…should be special. If you can’t make it in and want a record signed , buy from the site and let us know or just email us back and we will sort. As regards up coming artists and record shops, some get it and some unfortunately don’t,  we aren’t going to change their world obviously but we can help a tiny bit and every inch counts when you are trying to climb to the top…sometimes upcoming artists will say buy from our site if you want stock, it ain’t about the dollars folks, aint about that at all.

Here’s a bit more on KEELEY and really hope to see some of ye on Saturday…myself and young Adam will be holding the fort…

“Dublin’s highly revered psychedelic dreampop quartet KEELEY release their first mini-album in the wake of two acclaimed EPs in 2021.

“Picks up where the debut EP ‘Brave Warrior’ left off with a musical search for lost spirits, Keeley goes further and deeper and carries us into a musical dreamworld that reaches in and out all at once” ~ Fiachna Ó Braonáin (RTÉ Radio 1)

“If you could speak, what would you say? To bring you back, I’d give my life away. But nothing can undo what they did” ~ lyric from “Shadow On the Hills”

Led by enigmatic front-woman, guitarist and songwriter Keeley Moss, this Irish outfit went from strength to strength last summer with the success of break-out single “The Glitter And The Glue” from their debut EP ‘Brave Warrior’. While seeming to come from nowhere, Keeley had actually been a key figure on the Irish music scene for some years previous with her band Session Motts before deciding to forge a path entirely on her own in 2020. With the help of skilled Dublin producer Alan Maguire, she began to craft songs that encompassed her encyclopedic knowledge and passion for music stretching back to early Pink Floyd, The Pretenders, The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys and the rich vein that is the dreampop canon of the late 80s and early 90s. It would also be the point at which she decided to base her songwriting exclusively around the murder of Inga-Maria Hauser, a case that had fascinated her for many years and a subject she had written extensively about in her blog The Keeley Chronicles

Determined to make her mark in Ireland she spent 2020 self-promoting to Irish media, gradually coming to the attention of national DJs and key music writers. Suddenly her songs “The Glitter And The Glue” and “Last Words” were on the national airwaves and her involvement with the Inga-Maria Hauser case was being picked up by the likes of The Belfast Telegraph and the Derry Post. In May 2021 a deal was struck with London label Dimple Discs, home to Irish compatriots Cathal Coughlan, The Undertones, Sack and Eileen Gogan. The release of the ‘Brave Warrior’ EP in June was the catalyst for even more national Irish radio support, but now the word on “The Glitter and the Glue” had crossed the Irish Sea, and plays on BBC 6Music were becoming common with support from Steve Lamacq and Radcliffe & Maconie. Regional BBC support in Northern Ireland and Wales followed, as did American play on SiriusXM, college radio and hundreds of global internet radio programmes.

A second EP ‘Echo Everywhere‘ landed in November, supported by further excellent radio and press reactions. On the live front, the band (Keeley – guitar & vocals, Martin Fagan – bass, Marty Canavan – keyboards) had recently added acclaimed Dublin drummer Tim O’Donovan to their ranks. Following a livestream performance at the Dublin Quays Festival in August, the band followed up with sold-out shows at Whelan’s main room in Dublin in October and The Lexington in London in December. Come the new year, Keeley were nominated by Ireland’s Hot Press as one of their “Hot for 2022” acts, and the stage was set for the next chapter in a story driven by self-belief, determination and a lifestyle devoted exclusively to music and songwriting.

Which brings us to “Drawn To The Flame”. A bittersweet title suggesting destiny and arrival, but also danger and ultimately, tragedy. Armed with seven new songs which showcase the maturity and breadth of KEELEY’s songwriting, this mini-album bristles with lush harmonies, muscular beats and inventive atmospherics, skipping gleefully across genres and further establishing Keeley Moss as one of Ireland’s most creative and visionary songwriters. As with previous songs, this set highlights Keeley’s ongoing fascination with the murder and short life of aforementioned teenage German backpacker Inga Maria-Hauser, who was brutally murdered in Northern Ireland in 1988 and whose case remains unsolved despite many promising leads pointing to the culprits. As an authority on the subject, Keeley has recently appeared in “Murder In The Badlands”, a moving BBC documentary that further explores Inga-Maria’s case. The album ends with a hidden track, the only known voice recording of Inga-Maria, a devoted artist and singer, which Keeley managed to procure from her family in Munich by way of a tribute.

Keeley herself notes… “We feel it is our best, and purest, sonic statement yet. The point at which even darker depths are delved into, peeling back layers of the story’s shell to reveal just how close to the flame I came – and how close to the flame I remain.”

And there’s also a really limited 12 inch of ‘Firestarter’ from the album, remixed by Andy C. On silver vinyl that too. Fastest fingers first with those everyone, apparently they have sold out in lots of places online already. Both of those will arrive into the shop at the start of November.

At the end of August, there’s an interesting LOU REED release coming, ‘Words and Music 1965’.

Next up, THE DELINES are reissuing 3 of their albums ‘Sea Drift’, ‘The Imperial’ and ‘Colfax’. ‘Colfax’ hasn’t been available on vinyl for ages I believe. We like them behind and in front of the counter in the shop.

Did i tell ye lately this brexit thing is still a pain in the liathroidi, still and always will be a pain in the liathroidi, the courier companies impossible to communicate with, no talking allowed  is the big business model now as we all know well  …got 6 copies of be bop deluxe live one for rsd yesterday tuesday and UPS lad says its 67 euro for him to give me the little box in his hand…48 of it VAT which i can try claim back and 19 euro a fee…19 euro for the lad to take my 67 euro in a 30 second card transaction,,,carriage was 11 sterling for the 6 records…all in fees to get the records was 33 quid…carriage was always there but 19 quid for nothing…Partizan sent us some JUST MUSTARD promo bits , signed prints, key rings, badges,,,,freebies to give to customers…Fed ex hit us with an invoice for 14.29 euro for “ clearance administration charge vatable at 23%” this stuff would do your head in….complete small fry in the scheme of it i know, but still manages to do the head in…seems a crazy way to do it to my simple mind…with brexit we have to be charged Irish Vat when we import from the UK once it hits our shores ( the courier companies do it) we can then claim it back in our vat return ( pain in the liathroidi again to manage) but the couriers still charge an admin fee for the honour…it can be anywhere from 5 euro to 35 euro ( no rhyme or reason to it) averaging about 15 euro id say…one company ROM ships out to us once we get over 100 euro on the invoice so we have received invoices for 107 euro and have had fees of 20 plus euro on them…some companies use PVA, postponed vat accounting and it is easier but they still charge a “ multi line clearance fee” which at times has been 35 quid for maybe 20 records…surely theres a better way?…we buy lps and cds out of the UK…nothing else now…surely we could be greenlighted from a vat point of view by the irish government rather than pay and then claim back but get caught for fees for the pleasure..ye wonder why i do be grumpy, probably just got a clearance invoice from a courier for free stuff we are giving to folks…pain in the liathroidi.

Going to hand you over to Shane now who will take ye folks on a walk down the road…

Sound, Ray!

How’s it going everyone? Hope the summer is going nicely for ye.We’re lucky we haven’t got the crazy heat that a lot of europe is getting…touch wood.

Some nice ones to mention this week but nothing huge.

First up is a bit of a recent classic, from the indie explosion in the early to mid 00s (although, it’s 20 years old already!), THE LIBERTINES’ debut ‘Up the Bracket’ is getting an anniversary reissue which will be out in October. We will be getting 4 formats of it: CD, Std vinyl, red coloured vinyl (limited) and a deluxe box set with lots of stuff in it. Good band.

Before that, at the start of August, some guy called PAUL MCCARTNEY is reissuing his solo records ‘I/II/II’ in a set called ‘McCartney’. There’s CD or vinyl available of it.

Also in October, Irish lads KODALINE are releasing a live album, ‘Our Roots Run Deep’ (nice title)
We have a sweet promotion for it too. The first 10 pre-orders of the album on any format will get a bonus signed laminate with it. Formats are: Indies maroon coloured vinyl, cream coloured vinyl and CD. Here’s a little trailer for the album: https://youtu.be/-mu6sLcyzZU

Another nice anniversary reissue coming soon is JETHRO TULL’s ‘Thick As A Brick’ which is 50 years old.
The original newspaper style cover booklet is re-done and looks pretty cool.

To confuse matters, a special CD/DVD/Book set of the album came out 10 years later, so that’s getting a 40th anniversary reissue. There’s a surround sound mix by Steven Wilson in that! We’ll have both anyway (in the link above)!

Also coming soon down the road CIGARETTES AFTER SEX are reissuing their debut album on clear vinyl in mid August. I think there’s another coloured variant of it coming too in November. Was popular in the ship when we had it but it’s been out of print for a good while now.

DROPKICK MURPHYS are releasing a new album too which sound interesting, featuring the lyrics of Woody Guthrie. It’s called ‘This Machine Still Kills Fascists’

Finally, there are two DEF LEPPARD reissues (Adrenalize and Euphoria) coming as well as a new DEMI LOVATO CD.

That’s all I think from me for this week. No video this week as we were up the walls a bit with RSD2.

Anyway, back to the gaffer! Cheers!

Thanks Shane!

Right so Integral for the 15th July have a reissue of BILLY NOMATES‘ self titled LP.
black midi will be releasing their brand new one ‘Hellfire’ and INTERPOL will have a new album out ”The Other Side of Make Believe‘.
Also from Integral that week, an ORBITAL remix compilation, a PAVEMENT reissue and the new one from WORKING MEN’S CLUB ‘Fear Fear’.

Sin about e for this week,
Thanks for listening as always,
Ray, Shane and Young Adam.

It is a 13-track career spanning collection recorded in December 2020, at Brooklyn, NY’s St Ann & the Holy Trinity Church mainly just Robin. The recording was originally broadcast as a live- stream event on the winter solstice of 2020, just days after New York declared a state of emergency tightening restrictions again in response to increasing COVID-19 cases. Pecknold describes the set as “me by myself on the longest night of the year… honoring the loneliness of 2020 with a nylon string and some songs new and old.” Those of you who have seen Robin perform a song or two solo will know how good he is…here is “ im not my season” from the recording…its a beautiful recording, guitar , vocal, bit of strings and choral at times…beautiful.

Hey everyone, hope all is well out there with ye, back to help Ray lighten the load of ye’re wallets!

Some biggies of interest to mention this week. Up first, the PIXIES are releasing a brand new album called ‘Doggerel’ (I hope Fontaines DC don’t sue them) on September 30th. A band I like, and great to see them consistently releasing albums now after being off the map for ages before. The last two were good, looking forward to hearing this now. We will have two coloured variants.

Second up, another legendary band, BLONDIE are releasing a nice compilation box set at the end of August, called ‘Against All Odds 1974-1982’. It will range from a 3 CD set up to a super deluxe 10LP with lots of other extras.

Third up is a class Irish reissue, the debut album from the excellent FIGHT LIKE APES. Out in September, it comes with a bonus 7 inch EP too and is great value. Brings back memories, a punky band I was in supported them in the mid 00s in Cyprus Avenue.

Also coming around the corner, a new album from modern post-punk band DRY CLEANING and a brand new one from BEN HARPER – Bloodline Maintenance (CD is July but LP is September).

Oh, another biggie that I nearly forgot, KASABIAN will have a brand new one too called ‘Alchemists Euphoria’ due out in August. Their 7th I think. Good band. We will be getting the indies orange vinyl of it but it will be limited!

Finally, coming soonish, ALICIA KEYS (mid July), WALTER TROUT‘s 30th studio album (mid August) and a 50th anniversary coloured reissue of FELA KUTI – Roforofo Fight also in August.

Here’s Adam and Ray’s latest video from the cozy corner: https://youtu.be/qgtZzPP9pzA

That’s all from me, back to you Ray bud, cheers!

Thanks Shane!

The new album is finally coming at the end of the month, cant wait!!!. Seriously, I can’t wait…

Its been a mad few years for the band, one of them nearly died from some evener crazier virus, they tried to record the new album ( this album) in analogue with tenth hand equipment and lost stuff, some of the equipment caught fire, a right cluster f**k…but all are fit and well again thank god, the album is done, some of the analogue stuff survived and is on it…and the new album “ the last concorde” is out at the end of the month…and the lads will play  in store here to launch the new album  on Sat 2nd July @ 2pm…cant wait…THE SHAKER HYMN are  playing the night before also in Coughlans, , still some tickets left for the Coughlans show as i send this…hopefully see some of ye  at one or both shows! Mercury Studios present us with PHIL LYNOTT and THIN LIZZY “ Songs for while im away and the boys are back in town live at the Syndey opera house 1978” .
“Songs For While I’m Away, a feature documentary on the life and music of Phil Lynott, telling the story of how a young black boy from working class 1950’s Dublin became Ireland’s Greatest Rock Star. As lead singer of Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott was a songwriter, a poet, a dreamer, a wild man. Told extensively through the words of Phil himself and focusing on some of his iconic songs, the film gets to the heart of Philip, the father, the husband, the friend, the son, the rock icon, the poet, the dreamer. Also included in the package is The Boys Are Back In Town Live At The Sydney Opera House October 1978 on DVD and CD. This concert features restored picture and remastered & mixed audio, performed by the lineup of Phil Lynott (bass & vocals), Scott Gorham (guitars & backup vocals), Gary Moore (guitars & backup vocals) & Mark Nauseef (drums). 5 songs performed from the concert have previously never been released and are available for the first time in this package. Hey everyone! Hope ye’re all doing alright and enjoyed the long weekend just gone. We went to Drimoleague for a night camping. Was a bit soggy unfortunately but a bit of craic all the same.

Going to get stuck into the releases of interest coming soon.
First up, Mr. JACK WHITE is releasing his second album of the year towards the end of July, it’s called ‘Entering Heaven Alive’. All formats we’re getting will be limited. We’ll have the colourdy one as well! Check the link if interested.
The album from April ‘Fear of the Dawn’ is good, so I’m sure this will be worth a listen too.

Second up is another brand new release, this time from EDITORS called ‘EBM’. With the orange version of this it’s ‘fastest fingers first’ as we’ll only be getting a few. Here’s ‘Karma Climb’ from it:
It will be out in September.

3rd, friend of the shop, well, friend of all shops really is TIM BURGESS with his new album called ‘Typical Music’. He was some man for keeping people going on social media through the pandemic. That’s coming in September too.
