Right so going to start with one close to our hearts…

There is an album announced today for release on the 11th of July.

Ólafur Arnalds & Talos – A Dawning 

Here is a little bit about the release

Ólafur Arnalds & Eoin French, known professionally as Talos, come together on A Dawning, a deeply immersive collaborative album set for release in July 2025 via OPIA Community and Mercury KX. Created before the untimely passing of Talos in 2024, the record blends their distinct musical voices into something truly transportive.

Adding a deeply personal touch, all artwork for the album and its singles were crafted by Talos himself, offering fans an additional insight into his beautiful creative vision. This release not only celebrates the musical partnership between Arnalds and Talos but also honours the enduring legacy of Talos, ensuring his artistic spirit continues to inspire and resonate.”

 

I only met Eoin twice briefly down through the years and he would only remember me as the guy who was hounding him for an instore when we met!

His last sentence to me was “ I will do an instore someday for you Ray”….it never happened.

Beautiful smile on a handsome face as he said it…hard to fathom.

 i was always a huge fan of his music and talent, what a voice Eoin had ( that’s what caused the instore hounding)

Last year when I heard the news, it rocked me big time and as i said i didn’t even know Eoin.

What a loss to his family and friends, what a loss….and what a loss to the wider musical community.

So this release is  close to everyone’s hearts.

We really hope our community will support it.

This release ( i think) will showcase once again, the immense talents of these two musicians.

There is a bit going on around the release…first things first there is a show in the Opera house in September and if you preorder the album from us you will get a presale code for the show.

Right more news …we are having a PULP listening party in advance of the new album “ more”

The listening party is on Thursday the 29th of May @ 6 pm ( a week before the album is out, so there will be no stock available on the night)

Sound, Ray, no bother! Hello everyone!
Yeah, jaysus, twas stressful enough over the last few days with the Pulp and Talos/Olafur Arnalds events. Extra tricky because they both kind of landed on our plate on the same day.
I know it’s not noticeable at all, but we’re not very corporate leaning… so not used to all the deadlines and embargoes and chart compliant wording etc.
But look, especially with the Talos release, it’s lovely to get a posthumous release from him, and from the two tracks Ray included, I’m sure it’ll sound great.

I hope ye don’t mind if I just list everything for ‘down the line’ (I probably only bore ye anyway)

Here is the piece about Eoin and Ólafurs friendship and music making…so poignant and heart breaking really…an incredible snapshot…we really hope folks will support the record.

 

“When we feel as though we might drown under the waves of our grief, there is music. On A Dawning, the astounding album from Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and the late Irish artist Eoin French – known to many as Talos – music becomes a raft to keep us afloat in those dark, seemingly fathomless waters, guiding us towards a glimmer of light on the horizon. For both artists, this record serves as the apotheosis of their creative talents, two brilliant minds revelling in their shared love of music.

It is abundantly clear that French found a kind of freedom in the music he and Arnalds made together, while Arnalds relished the fresh challenge of working with someone new. On “Signs”, French’s voice shifts and morphs in unexpected ways, moving instinctively rather than following predictable patterns – a reminder of his masterful approach to composing. “It sounds a little bit different from the other songs on the record because we were still trying to figure out what we were doing – what direction we were going to take,” Arnalds says. We hear this in the stutter of the drums, the chopped vocal samples and improvisational quality, allowing us to sink into the song and be transported.

French and Arnalds met just before their residency at Sounds from a Safe Harbour Festival in Cork, in 2023. “We instantly felt a very strong musical connection, and composed a few songs that ended up on the album,” Arnalds recalls. The pair were natural collaborators: “It brings a certain ease to things when you’re working with other people, because when you’re alone in it, you tend to suffer quite a lot,” Arnalds says. “Bringing other people feels familial, and maybe more related to the origins of what music was, what music has always been.” 

French later visited Arnalds’ studio in Reykjavík, where they realised they wanted to work on a full-length project. Devastatingly, French became ill during his stay and was admitted to hospital; too unwell to travel, he stayed with Arnalds and his wife, Indonesian-Filipino artist Sandrayati for a few weeks while receiving treatment. “It brought us together like nothing else can, living there with our partners and being so deeply embedded in all of this,” Arnalds says. “It put everything into perspective and we realised that we needed to finish this album, because we had something to tell.”

Lead single “We Didn’t Know We Were Ready”, featuring Niamh Regan and Ye Vagabonds with a choir of friends, begins with hushed, reverential piano notes before French starts to sing: “How did we doubt the evening sun?/ We didn’t know we were ready.” As he is joined in harmony, strings glide in like swans on a still lake. In one moment, his voice disappears, and Regan and Ye Vagabonds take the lead, before he returns: “What if the silence said it?” Each vocal cascades over the other, growing louder then falling away again. It’s a beautiful work, one in which raw grief mingles with acceptance, and closes with a profound quiet.

When French eventually returned to Ireland, Arnalds began visiting him at his home in West Cork where they continued writing new songs. “Slowly, the music became more and more serious – you knew the lyrics were poignant, and it started to feel like we were onto something really special.” Arnalds describes their friendship as a perfect match: “I don’t think we even spoke that much, we could hang out for a whole evening and maybe say three words.” This only changed towards the very end, when it became clear that French had little time left: “We started going through the album in a more organised way, working out how to finish it and what was important to him.”

A Dawning opens on “Shared Time”. Snatches of conversation are caught between strange murmurations of sound, as though preserved in amber that appears like warm honey when held to the sun. “We both knew that I would have to finish parts of this record without him, but it was still our music, so Eoin suggested I go through his phone to find something there,” Arnalds says. “‘Shared Time’ is the result of that idea, prefacing the record with thoughts on the importance of family and community. In a way it felt symbolic of my purpose, of keeping his creativity alive.”

“Bedrock” is more forlorn in tone, the piano notes as immovable as stone as the song delves into themes of home and belonging. French sings in a strange, lilting cry, stirring something ancient within as he is joined by Sandrayati. As their voices rise and fall, you imagine waves crashing against the rocks, eroding the surface. The song was written in West Cork, while Arnalds was staying with French: “We would drive around a little bit – he showed me the ruins of a ceremonial circle,” he recalls. Arnalds felt an instant connection with his friend’s home, knowing the history of Irish monks who came to Iceland and of the Vikings who established the town that would later become known as Dublin. “There’s a defiance in both countries, an island mentality, which I think is often a result of us fighting to keep what is uniquely ours – there’s a certain energy that comes from that,” he says.

“It’s not difficult to grasp the notion that French was exploring ideas surrounding our physical and spiritual forms for much of the record, and a sense of place inspired by the rugged, wild landscapes of Arnald’s country and the dramatic, sweeping coastlines of his own home. The lyrics to “Bedrock” were written with author Max Porter (Grief is the Thing with Feathers), who later told Arnalds that French had spoken about Michelangelo and “the body beyond the rock” – the Atlas who emerges out of the marble while bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders. The sculpture’s half-completed form is what scholars call “non-finito”, believing the artist intended to demonstrate the eternal struggle of humans to free themselves from their material trappings. These figures already existed in the marble, just as French’s songs already existed in him, waiting to be released.”

“west Cork, 12 Feb”, then, feels like French imagining himself without a body tying him to the earth. His voice drifts like smoke out of the ether then vanishes again amid Arnalds’ undulating patterns of piano, as both artists play with sound and melody. There is a sense of foreboding in how French wrestles with the idea of no longer having a physical form. It’s a moment frozen in time, taken from the original recording Arnalds captured while they were together. For that same reason, the title is written in the manner of a voicenote – a fleeting thought documented before it could be snatched away and lost forever. 

French and Arnalds were already exploring the concept of “Borrowed Time” before they realised how significant it was. They asked English folk musician Alexi Murdoch to write a spoken-word section to weave in with French’s vocals: “He came in and wrote it on the spot, reciting it into a cheap microphone,” Arnalds recalls. Only later did he add the orchestral closing that swells like some great leviathan rising from the depths. “for Steph”, meanwhile, is French’s wordless declaration of love for his wife, written for her on the piano on Valentine’s Day. “That’s Eoin playing on the first half of the song,” Arnalds confirms, “and then I added the strings to the second half. It was important to honor Eoin’s legacy and the love he had for his community. That extends to Steph, as symbolised in this song here, and it continues with all of us, as friends as we’ll continue to care for her. It’s there in the final part of the album where the wider purpose of the album reveals itself – community – represented on the final song by a choir of friends in the most moving and sincere celebration singing in unison: “we didn’t know we were ready”.  

Steph was watching over a video call as Arnalds led the orchestra for the title work “A Dawning”, a staggering masterpiece. “I think this song has the best lyrics Eoin ever wrote,” he says. “I get goosebumps just thinking about it.” If “west Cork, 12 Feb” and “Borrowed Time” allude to something unfinished, “A Dawning” states it outright. “I had this feeling that he knew the whole time what was going to happen,” Arnalds says. “I think you know in your body, and going through some of his writing, his poetry, you can kind of see what he’d been writing this whole time. He just knew.”

What began as a collaboration between like-minded friends now serves as a work that honours French’s extraordinary legacy, keeping the flame of his creativity burning bright for all to hear. He died before the album was completed, leaving Arnalds to finish what the pair of them had set out to do. “It’s been two-sided,” he says of this emotionally complex process. “I would get these waves of sadness in the moments that I realised he wasn’t here, sitting next to me. But then, having this record as a way of channelling my grief, and this platform… I’m so grateful for that. After you lose someone, you’re often left with an emptiness, but I was able to have Eoin in my life for the last six months – and I could feel him very clearly when I was working on our music.”

The orchestra session for “A Dawning” took place a week after French’s passing. “I really tried to get him to witness it – he hadn’t done orchestra before, he was so excited about it,” Arnalds says. “It was only about a week after his death that I had this session I needed to go to, and I was like, ‘What do I do here?’ I wasn’t ready, but… I just had to.” He flew some of French’s friends over, for emotional support more than anything else, and steeled himself to tell the orchestra about what had happened. “You just heard this audible gasp,” he remembers, “and I couldn’t really keep it together. I started breaking down. But at the same time, I saw everyone in the orchestra just going like, ‘Alright. Don’t worry, we got you.’”

Arnalds had never seen an orchestra “lock in” in the way they did that day. You hear it in the emotion of the performance; the sombre tone of those opening notes. “Now let’s just ride on highs while the moment’s right,” French sings, “Now don’t you fold my wings for the fear of flight…” The violins sustain, like the lull – as though the world has stilled – before that first sliver of morning light sends the birds into song. “It feels like this war is our dawning,” French urges. “Don’t let that light outrun us yet/ It feels like this war is our dawning.” The strings grow louder, surging upwards and threatening to drown him out, but French chases them, his voice growing ever stronger and more defiant. It seems for a moment that he’s victorious, as the music quietens, falling away to leave just his voice, then the silence.

“We made this album together,” Arnalds says. “Even after, while I was there working on some arrangements, I never felt like I was truly alone. Near the end, where we saying how grateful we were to have met each other, he told me, “One day you’ll be sitting at the piano and suddenly get an idea, and you’ll know that’s me.”’ A Dawning is testament to those eternal bonds forged through music, a lasting monument to French’s incredible legacy, and the wonderful friendship that he and Arnalds shared.

Ye folks may or may not have heard but there is a new vinyl pressing plant just opened in Clane County Kildare called Anthem vinyl.

This is really good news for the little music ecosystem in the country.

It’s good for artists, bands, labels and shops to have a pressing plant in the country.

The really good news about Anthem from our perspective is they are really customer focused and really record shop focused…i know one of the lads running it quite well and Chris has always been a serious supporter of record shops in this country…it’s not going to change with Anthem, i think there will be a lot of plant/shop incentives happening over the years ahead.

It’s great for up and coming artists/bands or more established artists /bands to have a trusted, quality and customer led pressing plant on these shores. Keeps delivery costs to a minimum.

Anthem believes in the record shops…i think there are 47 record shops the length and breadth of the country … .If you manage to get 47 record shops behind a release, it will go a long way, I predict some high quality instores and a lot of collaboration with Anthem.

Just jumping back on the Anthem vinyl thing….i hope and think a lot of mid to high enough profile Irish Acts will use Anthem, bit of a one stop shop for the lot, pressing, fulfillment, chart eligible sales, local etc….if an act is not signed with a record company, Anthem probably has all the right tools for that act.

We contact a lot of these type of acts if they have a release coming not via a record company and its 50/50 whether they will deal with us….some of them see us and some of them dont….thats ok….those that don’t, probably think, what benefit is giving our record to a poxy shop, we have our own shop….they don’t see us, they don’t see ye folks, they don’t see  ( sorry buzzwords coming)  the community…that’s what all good record shops are.

Anthem sees us and that’s why it’s such a good thing from our point of view.

Anyhoo…we are going to stick in some of the performances from RSD over the next few weeks for your enjoyment….hope to have the Bockety instore for RSD here now if the superb IT dept got it done?….thanks to Tim as always for the high quality work ( which he gets a few records for…pittance….but Tim sees us)

He is  doing a run 500 12” records on his webstore but also a much smaller run of 35 12” white label, hand stamped, signed records exclusive for a few record stores. I’m giving 5 records each to a few record stores including rough trade west, Berlin and NYC, as well as Big Love in Japan and La Bestia in Mexico City. Releases for this coming Friday the 2nd of May include…

 

Was at the Cork/Tipp match last Sunday and the sending off before the match had even started really just spoiled the whole occasion….lovely day, cracking pre match buzz…ruined really….it would have been great to see where the two teams were really at….this macho rubbish at the start of matches …” laying down markers”, “ not taking a step back” rubbish rubbish….let the hurling do the talking simple as….management a lot to answer for i feel…message should be let the hurling do the talking…it spoilt what could have been a cracking match.

Showing in Cork May 11th -14th May  in the Triskel is a film called John Murry & Michael Timmins – A Little Bit Of Grace And Decay.

Here is a bit more info:

The Soundtrack to accompany the Award winning Documentary “The Graceless Age: The Ballad Of John Murry”.  Written and performed by John Murry and Mike Timmins (Cowboy Junkies). The film has already won Best Irish Documentary at the 35th Galway Film Fleadh and will be premiering in the UK later this year. Directed by Sarah Share best known for her multi award winning ‘If I Should Fall from Grace’ –  the Shane MacGowan Story.

 

“Ever since we finished recording A Short History of Decay back in 2016, I’ve been waiting for John Murry to return to my studio. I had been working on some ideas for the film score for John’s doc when he finally reappeared. He had three days to kill in Toronto, so we decided to get together, sit around and play some music. No real plan and no real goal, just play and enjoy each other’s company. This album is the result of that visit. It’s a “sort-of” soundtrack album to the film, it contains some score pieces, as well as some of the solo recordings that John and I made when he was here in Toronto, some of which also became a part of the score” Mike Timmins.

 

This haunting film is the story of American singer songwriter John Murry, who was on the cusp of greatness after the release of his highly acclaimed album The Graceless Age (2013), when his world fell apart. Addicted to heroin and creatively exhausted, he washed up on the shores of Ireland, a broken man. Now, he retraces his steps back to Mississippi into the dark heart of American life and faces his demons- a neglected childhood, traumatic assault, and resulting years of opioid addiction.

 

John also explores his family links to the Nobel Prize winning author William Faulkner. His adopted grandmother Mimi would tell him if anyone was imbued with the spirit of Bill Faulkner, it was John.

She also told him that his famous ancestor was also addicted to opiates. Yet, throughout his long period of substance abuse he was constantly writing and performing. Like Faulkner, Murry’s lyrics embrace the dark side of American life – an anger that is born in the rotting underbelly of Mississippi history. Reminiscent at times of Neil Young or Wilco, Murry’s music is classic Americana. 

 

This film chronicles his efforts to put it back together again after finding solace in Ireland and come to terms with his turbulent early years. John embarks on a road trip that takes him from his haven on the cliffs of Co Clare, Ireland to his native Mississippi and then his strung-out days in California.

The film culminates with John travelling to Toronto to rekindle his creative collaboration with

Canadian music legend Mike Timmins, who produced his second album, A Short History of Decay.

Mike helps John express himself the best way he can – through his outstanding music. This beautiful documentary charts his journey from near death to redemption and a new zest for life and art. “

Happy summer to ye! Nice start to it with the weather this week. I’d like to go to a few gigs, Joe Bonamassa doing Rory, Neil Young. Too much choice, will have to see how the wallet is. I’m going to see Earth in the Pavilion in a few weeks.

Anyway, there’s a big reissue coming out on June 13th, METALLICA – Load (Remastered). I’ve been waiting for this for ages. They did everything up to the black album, so this will be nice to get. There’s a cool orange and black smoke vinyl version as well as a super deluxe box set:

Saw them a few times live, great live band. There will be expanded 3 CD and standard 2 LP versions also.

Hope all is well

The hurling is off and running, the proper stuff ( not the league)…jays if Waterford bring something to the table it’s going to be a mad munster championship.

Releases for this friday the 25th of april include

The intensity of the last few weeks is starting to ease up…delighted it’s in the rearview for another year to be honest.

Releases then for the 2nd May include

UCC exams are starting tomorrow next door to us for the next 4 to 5 weeks … .so the parking can be an issue outside the front…there is ( nearly) always parking in the 4 or 5 spaces outside the very front of the shop, but there maybe cones in front of them….just pop out of the car , move the cones and park….or double park outside if no parking and pop into us and we will sort it…its monday to friday, no issue on Saturdays….easy fix for us so just let us know and we will sort it.

In boring industry news, Orchard have moved distribution company to DP world ( who also do Integral, Sony, Cargo) ….so Orchard deliveries should be more timely….Proper used do their ( Orchard) distro along with Shellshock and SRD ( as well as Proper themselves) …here is where there is a little problem….for Proper to ship to us, there needs to be 30 units in the box…losing Orchard means it takes longer to get 30 units in the box….so Proper , Shellshock and SRD orders are going to be a bit slower getting to us id imagine….we often hear on the shop floor , it’s due out today….80% of the time that’s no issue, but with some companies if i don’t have enough stock in my “ box” it doesn’t ship….moral of the story…be chill.

Exciting week ahead for Adam as his band “ Cutouts” are going into the studio to hopefully lay down some tracks for the album … .so he is missing for a while.

Stripe was down for 5 days last week….they sent me a survey to rank their customer service from 0 to 5 after it was all done….so it was like been marooned on a wet, cold, stony , sandless , foodless desert island with a james last record and a toothache from hell…and they wanted to know how they had done….zero was terrible if your interested.

 

So main week for this week… and records /cds i shall be ordering in the next few days are for releases on the 9th of May….these include ( shout, shout let it all out)

Hope ye had a nice Easter weekend. Noelle and I went to the cinema twice, weather for it.

A biggish release/pre-order was just announced, the brand new album from SWELL SEASON – Forward, out June 13th. Yes, that fella GLEN HANSARD and yer wan Markeěta Irglovaě from the movie ONCE are back with their first album in 16 years! Here’s a new track from the album, lovely song:

Secondly, after the RSD release of the Four Tet remix of the track, ‘Alone’, THE CURE are releasing the full album of last year’s ‘Songs from a Lost World’ remixed. ‘Mixes of a Lost World’ it’s called.
Some big names collaborating here, including Paul Oakenfold and Orbital. And at least £1.20 from each sale will be going to the charity WAR CHILD.

Hows it going?

Thanks for the support last Saturday, thanks to Shane , Adam and Mia for putting up with me!
Its an intense week … .there do be loads going on … .the older I get the harder it seems but now the dust is nearly settled … .it was a great day…..most people are happy i think… so once again … .thanks to all of ye who supported the day … .thanks also to the musicians , they were great.

Behind the 8 ball here today so wont be much talking from me….the hangover lasts the week, trying to find “ back to normal” again….its mad the difference in the shop….just to say we will have a second card terminal for next year so it will speed up the queue…..thats the one part we let people down a bit last saturday….after getting your records , there was too long a wait….will fix that for next year….sorry folks! Had some drama with the website for 24 hours….got an email from Stripe on Sunday evening to update my information….before i knew it lunchtime Monday we couldn’t take payments on the site…stripe had cut us off…i done the info thing about 4 on Monday and got a message that it can take 2 to 3 days to verify the information….no “ real” response to “ chats”  that it was crucial to get the site functioning again ( rsd leftovers were going online at 8pm) what rubbish lip service i got back….disgusting AI generated responses….but zero help…shut us down without warning really and appalling customer service….we had to get the IT guys to install Paypal as a payment option on the site…..at least that got us back working…but we lost 30 hours and the RSD leftover window….ah sher it could be worse but very frustrating…i’m still not back with stripe 48 hours on now….not the best week. Small fry in the scheme of life though. But I am going to borrow a line from my young colleague Shane…Stripe are a shower of …..

Some big hitters to mention today from me. First up is new/unreleased music from the Bossman (no, not Ray!)
Yes, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN is back with the LOST ALBUMS. One part of the release is called ‘Lost and Found: Selections’, a compilation of some of these previously unreleased track on CD or 2 LP vinyl. From around the early 80s.
The other part is the whole shebang on either 7 CD box set or 9 LP box set.
Here’s some more info about the box sets:

TRACKS II: THE LOST ALBUMS are seven unheard Bruce Springsteen records made
between 1983–2018.

Featuring 82 previously unreleased songs, The Lost Albums fill in chapters of
Springsteen’s expansive career timeline, while offering invaluable insight into his life and
work as an artist. “The Lost Albums were full records, some of them even to the point of
being mixed and not released,” said Springsteen. “I’ve played this music to myself and
often close friends for years now. I’m glad you’ll get a chance to finally hear them. I

Should be a good one! All formats are released on June 27th.


Next up is the brand new album from THE DIVINE COMEDY, ‘Rainy Sunday Afternoon’. Their first album in 5 or 6 years. We all liked their last one ‘Office Politics’ in the shop.

‘Neil says: “My musical output is, for better or worse, a representation of my personality. A good chunk of that personality revels in the rumbumptious; celebrates the silly. And I made ample use of that for the Wonka songs. I have though, like everyone, a darker, more melancholy side. And for one reason or another it has been much in evidence of late. I needed to use this album as an outlet for those feelings. To work through some stuff. Mortality; memories; relationships; political and social upheaval. Everyone should get to make an orchestral pop album once in a while. It should be available on the NHS.“’

That’s out in September. There’ll be a limited dark green vinyl of it and also a 2 CD expanded version.

So Record store day is Saturday the 12th of April…

Opening at 8AM…Closing at 5 pm…online with Leftovers on Monday the 14th of April @ 8PM.

Will be leaving 5 into the shop at a time for 5 minutes like last year … .it makes it a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for all i think. The queue is gone normally after about 40 minutes.

We will have some spots to give out throughout the day as usual … .probably do 10 in the queue and spread out throughout the day if i have stuff…sent the begging letters to the record companies anyway.

Just 4 musical acts this year…

Kicking off at 12 noon with 

Bockety  is a (relatively) new band based in Cork,  and they play a wide range of original music “From classic Rock to Country to Beatles-esque psychedelic tunes, to Reggae vibes”

 The band is made up of front man, singer/songwriter/guitarist Terry Datson. David O’Donovan on guitar ( super guitar player, member of Cork Floyd, who are playing in St Peters church this friday evening) Dave had a solo album out 3 or 4 years which is excellent and so worth a listen…called “ say no more”…excellent it is.

Ralf is on bass and Con Doyle on drums….full band set….excellent musicians.

Bockety released their debut CD earlier in the year “ and we’re rolling!” and will be selling and signing on the day….30 minute set 12 till 12.30.

Next up at 1 pm is Jean Pack … .this is Adams pick, he raves about them … .young, new band … .the boy will tell ye more … .another full band band show:

Ive seen Jean Pack a few times now and Ive been blown away every time.The brainchild of Niamh from I Dreamed I Dream its witty and charming with a great sound. What more could you want!? . 2 PM then we are delighted to welcome Ian Whitty and the Exchange back to the  shop…i think the lads have done RSD 2017 for us … .where does the time go!
I love this band, way better than what they probably receive credit for….great words, great melodies, really well crafted songs.

I saw them in Coughlans there only a few weeks ago and they were so good,,,so tight…fine band, you should really check them out if new to you…excellent.

Ray got me into Sufjan, especially with his enthusiasm for this album. It’s a masterpiece of quiet acoustic songs with brilliant lyrics and melodies. Largely about his late parents.

Hope all is well…weather quite nice lately, makes a big difference.

Got an email there yesterday about Amazon in Ireland and opportunities for retailers with them.

With their Cead mile failte …three words for them…9 letters  Go is the first word and the other two words begin with F and O… … ..opportunities me arse.

With Amazon.ie now live, competition for online sales is surely intensifying, that much is obvious!

Anyone hear a hint of menace in the line…..

Same three words from me with a little bit more bite … .abbreviated for brevity here…with  a bit of  venom though…GFO….do you know what…scrap the abbreviation…Go Fuck right Off with yer opportunities for local retailers.

I really hope folks in general will stop and think a bit more before making a purchase … .give the independent retailer a chance… give them a shot. 

Biased i know, but there is something special about independent shops i feel….record shops, book shops, bric a brack shops….we are communities generally, customers support us, we support customers, local bands/artists etc etc….GFO with yer cead mile failte.

Also the Fred Again releases aren’t going to make it on time so these will be released now later in year…again just passing on the info!

THE CLIFFORDS signed a record deal recently and are with top management , long way to go but the future could be bright, they are starting to get bums in seats around the world…great to see some of our own making waves. 

Even though I laughed when I read this, folks from the rest of the country will laugh harder though…got a mailout from a PR company in the UK about THE CLIFFORDS recently ( sent to a ton of people not just Cork people like) and heres a few lines from it

I watched the documentary film about the poet Pat Ingoldsby last night on RTE. Class. What a unique soul he was. My friend bought me one of his books recently, I’m hooked. I remember him sitting outside the GPO in Dublin selling his work.
But Imelda May was in the doc and she read a couple of his poems. Great watch. I guess it’s on the player now.

First release to mention is a big one, the brand new album from CMAT – Euro-Country. She has been going from strength to strength in recent years. Talented girl. Popular in the siopa.

The album will be released in August, and we’ll be getting it on CD, black Vinyl and indies coloured vinyl.

One that wasn’t announced until after the newsletter went out last week, DIRE STRAITS – Brothers in Arms: 40th Anniversary Edition. Remastered with loads of extras. Out May 16th. Here’s a bit more info:
“One of the world’s best-selling albums, Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms, celebrates its 40th anniversary with an exquisite 5LP deluxe edition.

The aftermath of long weekends are messy so not a whole pile going on this week i think.

Not much more news on the RSD allocations yet….but there is a late edition to the RSD schedule with the announcement of

We had to place our order instantly so the order was placed last Friday … .i hope to get 10 or so copies of it … .just so you know!

Remember RSD is Saturday the 12th of April, trying to organise the music for the day, hit a few dead ends but will update soon!

All of the above i wrote about 9.30 this morning….its now nearly 2pm and a few RSD updates have come in…

Good news or bad news folks?

Good news is Orchard looks good….no real hassle

Bad news from Warner though i’m afraid….just two titles cut…..that sounds like good news…..but two biggies i’m afraid….and one yucky yucky one ( theres always at least one)

So heres the story…i asked for ( wishlisted)  22 copies of the doors release for RSD….14 of ye had wishlisted me for it ( nearly all regular sound heads)….we have been allocated 4 copies and Adam and i were hoping for a copy also….no panic on mine so basically 3 copies for the shelves….disaster i know….now i was straight back to the rep with a begging letter about them….its a massive cut….( backstory, my rep from Warner for the last 15 years,  left there last autumn id say and the new lad has a whole host of shops in the UK as well as now doing the Irish shops….my guess is not only is his plate overflowing, i think he has two plates everyday, he can be slow to respond and doesn’t come back at all some of the time ….just too much going on….the response to my begging letter was “ Hopeful I’ll get more allocation of The Doors Ray, you’ll be the first to know if I do.” I sent a second note to try to get a few more in the hope of covering more regular heads who WILL be in the queue … .fingers crossed big time but for now just 3 on the shelf … .daggers at dawn time….ye have the info.

The second cut from Warner was on the Bowie vinyl….i asked for 25, cut back to 20 ( reasonable) ….17 of ye wishlisted in the end…a few after cut off….so should be ok but just above really….again ye have the info folks ( got cut on Bowie last year also)

A little bit of boring industry news stats here for ye folks….i find it interesting but could bore the liathroidi off ye…

2024 was the greatest ever year for music consumption …ever….( in the UK and Ireland)….don’t get excited, or more importantly i wasn’t getting excited … .Consumption reached the equivalent of 201.4 million albums sold ( UK and Ireland) in 2024 … .excited … .Streaming alone generated the equivalent of 178 m albums, exceeding the record of 172m physical albums sold in 2004 at the tail-end of the CD boom). Not so exciting!!

So physical sales were at a peak of 172 million albums sold 20 years ago to now 20 odd million albums … .crikey, that’s a hit.

Overall spend on music last year was 2.39 billion ( subscriptions and physical ) with physical being 13.8 % of that pie or 330 million in sales , downloads 2% and the  rest streaming services…..2 billion paid to streaming companies ( Universal and Sony  have shares in Spotify , not sure if the other record companies do) 

The Spotify stuff is murky on all levels … .Here is a piece I pulled from a rolling stone article about ownership in spotify…

“ Speaking of industry incestuousness, I suggest you read more about Tencent’s 9.1 percent stakeholding in Spotify, which is awe-inspiring in its spider’s web of vested interests. The short version: Tencent Holdings is about to own 10 percent of Universal, which in turns owns around 3.5 percent in Spotify, which in turn owns around nine percent in Tencent Music Entertainment, which in turn is part-owned by Universal’s two main rivals (Warner and Sony), but remains majority owned by Tencent Holdings, which in turn owns 9.1 percent of Spotify. “

8 different parties  make up over 70% of Spotify’s shares, Uni and Sony included in them…. Thats without the murkiness.

Universal Music Group is the biggest music rights holder in the world and is valued at 33 billion .

All of the above is way way above my pay grade and smarts to be honest … .our simple goal every year is keep the shop open….the industry going well is a really positive thing …thankfully , i do remember 2012 only to well….thank you Mr Bowie 8th Jan 2013…is that a chink of light i see. 

Lots of good news in there though for shops….2024 was double the figures of the worst case scenario of 2012/2013 where everyone ( me included) thought it was game over….physical increased 6% year on year versus 2023 with the cd showing growth for the first time in 20 years as well as vinyl continuing to grow ( albeit slow growth…thats ok though) so overall its good out there i suppose. Challenges off course been the direct selling from the record companies, all the record company websites out there selling , pricing, brexit …and dont forget the SS….storage and spouses…as i suggested to one person recently you could always ask your better half to move in with another family member….that should create a bit of space i said.
 

Main week this week is for releases for the 4th April ( i shall be ordering these in the next few days)

Interesting reading alright, Ray, about the industry stats. Morbidly interesting maybe! Shocking how little artists get paid from streaming but yet it’s nearly 90% of how music is consumed nowadays.
Great that we have our little niche though with vinyl and CD and the community. Long may that last.

First one for down the road from me is the new album by MATT BERNINGER of The National. It’s called ‘Get Sunk’ and we will have it on CD, black vinyl or indies cobalt blue vinyl. Release date is 30/5/25.

ALAN SPARHAWK formerly of Low is releasing his second album in two years also on May 30th. His solo album from last year was very good, vocoder vocals throughout, very different. Great guitarist.

There’s a deluxe reissue of SUEDE – Sci Fi Lullabies coming out on May 23rd. Formats are 3 CD, 3 LP or limited grey 3 LP vinyl.
Here’s a bit of info about the 3 CD: 

  • Originally released in 1997, Sci-Fi Lullabies remains a stunning collection of Suede’s B-sides, showcasing some of the band’s finest work
  • This expanded edition brings together the original set alongside a newly compiled second volume

I’m working on a new video for the next ‘single’.

First, down the line release to mention from me today is  from the Irish band M(h)aol. It’s a brand new album, their second I think, callled ‘Something Soft’. I like their sound. Here’s a new track from it:

That’s to be released on May 16th on both CD and Vinyl.

And another Irish release coming in May is Amble – Reverie. I only discovered this band in the last week after Ray told me about them. Nice sound, folky with a bit of trad in the mix.

This is their debut. Out on CD and Vinyl on May 23rd.

There are two new Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab releases coming soon too. Fleetwood Mac – Mirage and Fleetwood Mac – Tango in the Night. These are high quality pressings from all analogue masters. They are 45rpm for more sound quality and the boxes are numbered. Pricey but on a high end system you will hear the difference.

Last but not least, there’s a new album coming out on May 9th from MARK PRITCHARD & THOM YORKE called ‘Tall Tales’. There’s going to be a special first edition CD and first edition Vinyl of it which incorporate deluxe packaging and a booklet.

Mark Pritchard & Thom Yorke are set to release their debut album as a duo via Warp Records. Following Pritchard’s remixes for Radiohead, the pair struck upon an otherworldly synergy with the track ‘Beautiful People’, a centrepiece of Mark’s 2016 solo album Under The Sun.

Really so looking forward to tomorrow evening folks when we welcome the 5 lads from THE MURDER CAPITAL for an instore here with us in the shop to launch their third long player “ blindness”….and i’m not talking shite here, this is such a good record, i genuinely love it…track after track is quality.

One of my own favourites here…the drumming on this is sensational…bass damn fine also

We are at the cap now really. Might squeeze 4 or 5 more in….buy album from site if you want to go.

There is a little time change …with Doors for the instore now 6 pm … .performance will be 6.15 or 6.20 … .the shop will be closed from 5.15 to Joe public …and doors then at 6 pm.

The lads will perform a stripped back set of songs from the album for 30 minutes and sign every single person’s record or cd after … .if you can’t make it and want a signed copy again buy from the site with note to get signed.

There is a madness release via State 51 for RSD….3 OR 4 of ye after it….it will be 40 quid best i can do….costs circa 35 to 40 euro to get boxes delivered from the UK for  some companies since brexit…generally 15 sterling delivery ….this would have been pre brexit also and fair enough…the kicker is the courier companies are absolutely flaaing it ( cork slang for taken the piss for non Leesiders) charging 20 euros handling fee since brexit…what a load of bollocks…dpd the best of them but the rest of completely flaaaaing it…so delivery plus dog shite handling fees equal 40 euro….4 records…ye get the maths…basically anyone else want the madness one before i go mad myself ?

Will be doing RSD orders for Integral, Proper, Sony, Little Amber Fish, SRD, Shellshock and Plastichead this weekend so still time to wishlist on those.

Warner and Cherry Red are the following week then.

Tomorrow evening should be a great one, will probably see some of ye there.
We’ve all been playing the album in the siopa for the last couple weeks, well worth picking up.
Delighted to have them instore.

First one to mention from me this week is a biggie! PINK FLOYD – At Pompeii is being released on a few formats including on 2 LP vinyl for the first time and it’s remastered by Steven Wilson.
An iconic concert film really. This is essential for Floyd fans I think. I think I might go for it on Blu Ray which includes behind the scenes footage of them working on songs from Dark Side. Looking forward to it. It’s being released on May 2nd.

Also on the PINK FLOYD stuff, there’s a host of reissues of their 1970s albums on CD and Vinyl due out at the end of March.

And before I bate through the list, there’s a brand new album coming out on May 30th by SWANS – Birthing on 2 CD+DVD or 3 LP+DVD. I know there’s a few SWANS fans who frequent the siopa. Here’s a bit of info on it:

First one to mention is a stone cold 90s rock/grunge classic in SMASHING PUMPKINS – Siamese Dream! Brilliant album. I love the alt rock/grunge stuff from around that time. This has been hard to find on vinyl for a good while I think, or if it’s been available it was crazy money.
There will be black vinyl and limited red smoke vinyl of it. It’ll be out on April 11th.

Timeline is short enough … .one record company wants orders back to them by close of play Thursday the 27th of Feb ( NB SEE BELOW….WISHLISTS NEED TO BE BACK BY CLOSE OF DAY SATURDAY the 22nd FEB) … .others then are 3rd of March 5th of March and 6th of March type thing.

NB NB NB….Universal came late to the party with their pricing and NB NB NB they require their RSD orders back by noon Monday the 24th of Feb….so i need wishlists back now by close of play Saturday the 22nd of Feb….this is nb folks…scrap above and wishlists back by close of play Saturday the 22nd of feb so i have time Sunday to put my order up…so just 10 days left to get wishlists back to us…so if interested  spend a little bit of time on it and get us wishlist by sat 22nd Feb

First up to mention from me today is a nice reissue of TRACY CHAPMAN‘s debut self titled album. It hasn’t been out on vinyl in ages I don’t think. Now coming out on transparent orange vinyl and standrard black vinyl too on April 4th. A classic.

OASIS are reissuing their fourth LP, ‘Standing On the Shoulders of Giants’ on limited silver vinyl for its 25th anniversary. Myself and Young Adam were agreeing the other day that it’s an underrated album.
That’s out at the end of the month.

And an Irish release, the new album from MONCRIEFF – Maybe It’s Fine is coming out on March 28th on CD and pink/white marbled vinyl.

Lots of big news tonight….we are a day later than usual for a good reason.

First things first, we are only thrilled to welcome THE MURDER CAPITAL for an instore in the shop.

This will be for the launch of their third long player “ blindness” , available on CD, black vinyl and indies yellow vinyl. The instore will be on Thursday the 27th of Feb at 6 pm.

First up to mention from me of what’s coming down the road is one that came in late last week, it’s a new FLEETWOOD MAC compilation, ‘1975-1987’ It’s going to be out as a 5 CD set and a Clear vinyl 6 LP set on March 28th.

Oh, another one that we didn’t get until late last week, a brand new album from BLACK COUNTRY NEW ROAD, ‘Forever Howlong’! It’ll be released on April 4th and we’ll be getting the indies coloured version of it as well as std vinyl and cd.
