The package includes sleeve notes by Reggae expert Steve Barrow, author of The Rough Guide To Reggae.Originally released in June 1996 on the short-lived Island Jamaica Jazz imprint, ‘Below The Bassline’ was the Jamaican guitarist’s nineteenth solo album – his first ‘Wranglin” was released by Chris Blackwell’s Island Records in 1964. It was recorded in New York with a stellar cast of guest musicians, including Ernest’s Skatalites bandmate saxophonist Roland Alphonso, bass player Ira Coleman (Herbie Hancock, Bradford Marsalis, Pharoah Sanders), drummer Idris Muhammad (George Benson, Lou Donaldson, Grant Green) and pianist Monty Alexander (Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie). ‘Below The Bassline’ is a testament to the skill of the legendary Ernest Ranglin and the other musicians featured here.Original copies of the 1996 black vinyl LP now sell for upwards of £400, while a limited reissue in Japan in 2021 is already attracting three figure prices. Born in Manchester, Jamaica in 1932 Ernest was a pioneer of the early ’60s Ska movement, his percussive and rhythmic guitar sound becoming a defining feature of that genre, as heard on recordings by Prince Buster, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley and The Skatalites. Ernest’s relationship with Island Records dates back to 1962, when he was among the musicians employed to add an ‘authentic’ Jamaican flavour to the first James Bond film Dr. No. Island Records founder Chris Blackwell was employed as a location scout for the film. In 1963 Ernest arranged and played guitar on ‘My Boy Lollipop’ by Millie Small (UK No. 2, May 1964), the first big international Ska / Reggae hit and for many British music fans, their first exposure to this ‘exotic’ genre. Such was his versatility, in 1964 he was hired by Ronnie Scott to join his band at his famous Jazz Club in London; readers of Melody Maker voted Ernest ‘best guitarist’ in that paper’s 1964 Reader’s Jazz Poll.Future projects saw him work with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Ken Boothe, The Congos and John Holt. By the turn of the decade, U.S. Latin music had evolved, often integrating socially conscious lyricism (in both English and Spanish), rock and funk influences, and a heavy dose of psychedelia. Pressed on two limited edition burnt red vinyl, the original album is accompanied by a second LP of previously unreleased ‘The Evolution Demos’, mastered and cut by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios. In line with previous editions, this expanded reissue is packaged in a striking, metallic-printed, gatefold sleeve, within an O-Card. The 4 page insert contains lyrics and brand new liner notes written by Frank, reflecting on the album and his journey over the last 10 years. The artwork features designs by two tattooists – a painting of Frank on the O-Card by Matt Hunt, and gatefold sleeve illustrations by Heather Ann Law. The album was recorded at El Dorado Studios (Burbank, CA) in 2012 with Frank’s band, The Sleeping Souls, and producer Rich Costey. Newly mastered for 180 gm vinyl at Abbey Road Studios, the original CD album has been completely reevaluated by Marc himself to bring fans this new ‘Artist’s Cut’ over this deluxe 2LP version. Despite delivering some of the best-loved Marc Almond songs of the era – ‘Adored & Explored’, ‘The Idol’ and ‘Come In Sweet Assasin’and ‘We Need Jealousy’, for example – ‘Fantastic Star’ had a long and sometimes troubled gestation with recording sessions spanning two record companies and four big-name producers –original Soft Cell / Bronski Beat producer Mike Thorne, the legendary Cure / Banshees / Beautiful South collaborator Mike Hedges, house pioneers The Beatmasters and The Human League / Heaven 17’s Martyn Ware all made sonic contributions. The resulting album was a thrilling, sonically varied ride through all the genres Marc had already made his own – from grimy guitar-based rock ‘n roll to beautifully orchestrated ballads, and from cutting-edge electronica to out-and-out pop music.For this long-overdue vinyl release Marc has revisited the original running order and looked again at some of the tracks from the sessions that didn’t make the album but later appeared as singles B-sides. Conceptualised in downtime while working as the bass player in the cult group Kevin Ayers And The Whole World, the teenage Mike Oldfield recorded his music in a small flat in Tottenham and a bedroom in his parents’ home in Harold Wood, Essex. Working with a tape recorder borrowed from Ayers, Oldfield created tape loops and worked with such advanced studio items as a screwdriver and a piece of card to get the multi-tracking he desired. This was the tape that was rejected by many record companies, and ultimately approved by Simon Draper and Richard Branson at Virgin Records. Re-recorded at The Manor Studio, with additional sections added, Tubular Bells was released on May 25th 1973, launching both Mike Oldfield’s career and Virgin Records. The rest, as they say . . . Unreleased until 2009, Opus One was made available on the 35th Anniversary box set of Tubular Bells. This unique edition’s artwork has been overseen by Siouxsie and Severin and boasts updated features and additional elements to celebrate forty years of this compelling, luminescent and influential recording. Their 1981 LP ‘Juju’ had started a new era of the Siouxsie and the Banshees and after an extensive year of touring and the release of a non LP single “Fireworks” they entered Camden’s Playground Studios to record their new album with a now tried and fully tested line up. The resulting ‘A Kiss In The Dreamhouse’ was released on 5th of November 1982. Pre-dating the subject matter of 1997’s ‘L.A Confidential’, the title ‘A Kiss in the Dreamhouse’ refers to a notorious Hollywood lookalike brothel. Siouxsie described their self produced album at the time as “Opiated visions, sonic pyramids, all seeing eyes, dreamlike soundscapes” their love of psychedelia now given centre stage as strings play backwards on ‘Circle’, the music shimmers through ‘Cascade’ and ‘Painted Bird’ and haunts on “Obsession” all capped off by ‘Slowdive’ a closing track of experimental sleaze tinted with violins, cellos and catchy melodic hooks. The album received unanimous praise on its release. NME’s Richard Cook considered it innovative: “A Kiss in the Dreamhouse is a feat of imagination scarcely ever recorded. It’s breath-taking. Somehow, a bold assurance of intention has met with a hunger for experimenting with sound to expand an already formidable group of songs into pure, open-minded ambiguity. The flesh of the song will balloon out or contort into unimaginable patterns; indecipherable echoes volley between the walls of the recording; glassy, splintered tones pierce the luxuriant sheen of the mix. Repeated listens trick the sense of balance; tremendous risks are taken. “I promise. This music will take your breath away”. Its stature as a classic seems to have only grown since its initial impact and its influence on what came after remains incalculable – from Riot Grrrl to Culture Club, from Massive Attack and Tricky to Hole and Nirvana (Kurt Cobain cited ‘Typical Girls’ as one of his favourite recordings ever) it’s impossible to underestimate its influence on leftfield outsider musicians to this day. For Record Store Day 2023 it’s a first outing on vinyl for pioneering producer Dennis Bovell’s ‘Rough Mixes’* of the album, previously unearthed as part of the research for 2009’s anniversary CD Deluxe Edition of the album. As a standalone vinyl piece ‘Rough Cut’, then, presents an entire alternative version of ‘Cut’, plus the addition of the band’s startling cover of ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’. It also shines a light on Bovell’s superb initial mixes which pack a raw power and punch to rival the final, finessed versions ultimately released as ‘Cut’. Arguably, these mixes could have ended up being the “official” versions and ‘Cut’ would still be able to claim its place alongside PiL’s ‘Metal Box’, and Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ as 1979’s most groundbreaking albums. What they demonstrate are a band and their producer pouring myriad musical influences in search of an entirely new musical language. Amy is of that new generation who are encapsulated by the vinyl revival, and with that comes the importance of having each and every one of her release’s on a physical format. Amy has many ideas of how she can emphasise her music and message through physical formats, and feels it would be a very powerful statement for her first release to be a part of record store day; not only is it an institution which has been the gateway for so many people her age, to be a woman representing RSD through her music would go some way to inspiring more young women to break into the physical music scene, one that has been dominated by male artists for so long.Being a highly visual artist, it is immensely frustrating that the tiny square on a DSP app may be the only way for her early fans to see what she puts so much into to help convey herself as an artist. With Amy, it’s the whole package; every lyric, flourish of colour, choice of pose for artwork, it’s all deliberate and intended. The overarching theme of this EP is Amy coming to terms with her younger-self’s ambition and dreams; Amy is repurposing her old school notebooks to illustrate the track list on this record. The vinyl will be pressed in the exact Pantone of purple used in all her art, the symbolic nature of which will be displayed as she develops as an artist. With ‘is that all there is?’ Amy cycles through a dream-state paralysis delivered with a quiet intensity. She literally leaves nothing in the well, giving all into her songs whilst cleverly using subtle guitar and production to carry the weight of her writing. This raw emotion carries throughout the EP. She truly encapsulates the quietest ones have the loudest minds. | Angelo Badalamenti | Blue Velvet – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Deluxe Edition) | 2xLP | Blue Velvet is David Lynch’s unforgettable 1986 masterwork, starring Kyle MacLachlan as a curious college student, Isabella Rosselini, as a tormented lounge singer, and Dennis Hopper, as an emotional gas-sniffing psychopath. Blue Velvet was Lynch’s first collaboration with his longtime composer and musical partner, Angelo Badalamenti, who channels Lynch’s unique vision with a dark, moody yet melodic score, at turns agitated and violent, soaring with sublime beauty, and hanging cool with ’50s-style jazz. This VERY rare and sought-after 1968 album from the legendary British singer-songwriter was only ever issued in the U.S. and over the years the LP’s reputation amongst collectors has grown with original copies now routinely selling for three figure sums. Although it never came out in England, Decca kept the masters to the intended U.K. pressing which contained two previously unreleased self-penned tracks; the blue-eyed soul bop ‘Goin’ Round in Circles’ and the orchestral ‘Come To My Arms’ which could almost have been a Bond theme. Dana would eventually become known as a blues singer, but at the outset of her recording career, her sound is an excellent barometer of what was happening on the swinging-London music scene, with the breezy psych-pop of ‘You Just Gotta Know My Mind’, a Donovan composition that he himself never recorded, the Marianne Faithfull-esque chamber-folk of ‘Tears in My Eyes’ and the Françoise Hardy sounding ‘Souvenirs of Stefan’. Other highlights are the orchestral sunshine pop of ‘Life Is Short’ and ‘London Social Degree’, both penned by cult British pop/rocker Billy Nicholls; the gothic blues of ‘Dead’, and an eccentric cover of Richard Fariña’s ‘Hard Lovin’ Loser’. Dana’s own compositions also stand out, particularly the psych-folk title track: In the U.K. Dana was at the vanguard of the immerging female singer-songwriter scene, as the only British female artists publishing and singing their own songs at this point were fellow Decca labelmate Twinkle, Sandy Denny and Christine McVie. Arranged by Mike Vickers of Manfred Mann and produced by Wayne Bickerton, the sound of ‘Foolish Seasons’ is luscious and imaginative. The songs are brought to life by an illustrious group of session musicians including Mike Vickers, and fellow Manfred Mann member Mike Hugg. Big Jim Sullivan who played on David Bowie’s first album on Deram, and Blue Mink founder Herbie Flowers on bass. These were joined by John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, who only a few years later would have their own band Led Zeppelin. Originally released in September 1982, ‘The Philip Lynott Album’ was the singer’s second solo venture, following on from ‘Solo In Soho’ two years earlier. It was recorded and released between Thin Lizzy’s eleventh and twelfth studio albums ‘Renegade’ (1981) and ‘Thunder And Lightning’ (1983). This 40th anniversary vinyl release adds the 1981 remix of ‘Yellow Pearl’; a No. 14 hit in January ’82, it was co-written with Midge Ure of Ultravox and used as the theme music for Top of the Pops between 1981 and 1986, but omitted from the original UK LP and cassette versions. Two further singles – ‘Together’ and ‘Old Town’ – were also taken from the album. In addition to Midge, the line-up on ‘The Philip Lynott Album’ includes his Ultravox band mate Rusty Egan, plus Thin Lizzy members Scott Gorham, Snowy White, Gary Moore and Brian Downey. Two of the tracks – ‘Old Town’ and ‘Ode To Liberty (The Protest Song)’ – were co-written by Phil and Jimmy Bain, bass player with Rock bands Dio and Rainbow (and perhaps more surprisingly, on Kate Bush’s 1981 single ‘Sat In Your Lap’). Mark Knopfler adds guitar to ‘King’s Call’ and Huey Lewis plays harmonica on ‘Tattoo (Giving It All Up For Love)’ and ‘Ode To A Black Man’. Phil Lynott was a founding member, singer and bass player with Thin Lizzy, who had fifteen UK Top 40 singles and fourteen Top 40 albums between 1973 and 2020. He had a further four Top 40 solo singles, including the 1985 No. 5 ‘Out In The Fields’, a collaboration with guitarist Gary Moore. He was also the singer on Moore’s 1979 No. 8 single ‘Parisienne Walkways’. Phil featured on the best-selling 1978 concept album ‘Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of War of the Worlds’, playing (and singing) the role of Parson Nathaniel. The following year Phil, along with Thin Lizzy’s Brian Downey and Scott Gorham, collaborated with the Sex Pistols’ Paul Cook and Steve Jones, releasing the No. 28 Christmas single ‘A Merry Jingle’ under the name The Greedies. Rizzle Kicks were Jordan ‘Rizzle’ Stephens and Harley ‘Sylvester’ Alexander-Sule; they met while attending rap and performance workshops with the Brighton-based charity AudioActive, and later both atended the BRITs School. In September 2011, Rizzle Kicks were featured artists on Olly Mur’s No. 1 single ‘Heart Skips A Beat’, which they performed at the 2012 BRIT Awards, whilst ‘Mama do The Hump’ was nominated for British Single of the Year at The BRIT Awards in 2013 (they lost out to ‘Skyfall’ by Adele). | Christy Moore | Ride On | 1-LP, 140g White Vinyl | Ride On is an album by Irish folk singer Christy Moore, originally released in 1984. Its title track remains one of his most popular songs. A number of songs relate the actions of those involved in political struggles, or those affected by those struggles; such as “Viva la Quinte Brigada” which is concerned with the Irish contingent amongst the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War; or “El Salvador” dealing with the civil war in that country in the 1980s. Only the magic password would release them, and thankfully, Lem had scribbled it down and left it inside an old sketch book for us (no, were won’t tell you the password, although it did have the words ’nie nie nie’ in it). There were loads of the dirty, dusty, greasy little buggers gathered, with the likes of Lyon, Liverpool, Hamburg and Chippenham (!!) scrawled in biro on the tiny labels alongside a date…and thus we are delighted to announce that this unique collection of live gems will now be heard by the world, via carefully digitized transfers, in a new series titled The Löst Tapes. Volume two has been hand-picked by the increasingly deaf, but well-meaning (and hydrated!)
